Fedora :: When Do "start > Computer > System Settings > About Me" And Try To Type In Password Get The Following Error?
Jul 17, 2009
I just installed Fedora 11 (KDE) off of the Live boot CD. I made a really simple password when I was installing, but later I decided to make up a much tougher version of it. When I do "start > computer > system settings > about me" and try to type in my password I get the following error:"BAD PASSWORD: is too similar to the old one BAD PASSWORD: is too similar to the old one BAD PASSWORD: is too similar to the old one passwd:Have exhausted maximum number of retries for service"This is weird because it seems like the system thinks I made three attempts, while I only tried once. Does anyone know what is going on? By the way I don't know why it thinks my password is too similar, It only has 3 of the same letters out of 8 Also, this is my home computer, why does fedora restrict me from a similar password? It should just warn me about it but then let me do it.

It happens like 50% of my Suse 11.2 startups, when I type in my password at login screen and hit enter, Gnome do not start, i can only see the green blank screen,or sometimes it start to show only my custom wallpaper and nothing more, when i try ctrl+alt+backspacex2 and login again everything seems to work fine, but what could be wrong ? is it a hardware issue ? Moreover, sometimes when I want to shutdown my laptop and click the shutdown button, suse do logout, but instead of turning off the laptop , it brings me to login screen, clicking the shutdown button at login screen makes my hdd lamp blink and thats all.

I am using OpenSUSE 11.4 on my office desktop computer. I would like to prevent users tinkering my computer, since there are personal and important files. How can I ask a username and password? I have one of course, but it is asked only if I log out and then log in. In the first boot, everyone can reach the KDE desktop.I am pretty sure it is an easy task.

I'm trying to use Kubuntu 10.04 in a corporate environment. Our environment uses an internet proxy that requires a username and password.Under Ubuntu 10.04, I can use the GUI to set the proxy host, port, username and password. When I do this, all the web browsers work, Snyaptic works, etc.However, under Kubuntu 10.04, the GUI lets me specify a proxy host and port, but doesn't appear to save the username and password. Because of this, I have to manually set the proxy information on my web browser, but the package managers don't work because they can't access the internet. Apparently the ability to specify proxy username and password is either broken or unfinished.

My wifes computor crashed during an update with a message to fill in a report. It would not respond to any key presses. The computor has been running 11.3 since it was realeased without problems other than jerky video. The computor will not boot it asks for the password but does not accept it, Although I can see the Home folder it does not mount. I have tried testdisk but although it sees the partions it cannot acess them.

I am using a dual system computer. When the computer start, I can not find the entry for Ubuntu.
My computer has the Windows Xp installed first, then I installed the Ubuntu system under Xp. The Ubuntu system files were put in a different partition. There was no problem. When the computer start, I can select to enter Xp or Ubuntu.
But after I update the XP to Windows 7, I can not find the entry for Ubuntu when the computer start. How can I solve this problem. The partition for the Ubuntu is untouched.

1. I am currently using a basic fedora 14. I had a fedora 8 DVD that contained many packages including its installation (I mean it was bootable and had its iso image. Now my question is that is there any way by which I can install the packages(like OpenOffice.org) from that DVD to fedora 14? I have a slow internet connection and its not possible for me to download large files.
2. I installed some packages via yum. My friend also has fedora 14 but unfortunately he doesnt have a internet connection to download the files via yum and install them. Are the .rpm files downloaded via yum stored in some specific folder, so that I can transfer those files via a flash drive to his computer and install them directly there?
3. Is there a way to autologin my account so that I dont have to type my password everytime I switch on my PC?
4. Everytime and every session I try to access a ntfs partition, it asks for my root password. Any tricks to bypass this?

In my system around 73gb(pc-desktop) i have,1 primary partition(windows)-25gb, 1-extended partition(remaining gb) 3 logical partitions were there in (under) extended partition in one of the logical partition is d:drive. in my hard disk d: drive is -/dev/sda5
previosly i was fat -file system , (d:drive-/dev/sda5), i remember i changed the d: drive(d:drive-/dev/sda5) file system to ext4file system ,with following command using terminal
After doing(changing the file system)this one ,i couldnt see the d:drive data
By doing that
1q) Did i reformatted the partition? i think the new filesystem(ext4) has no knowledge of the data that was on it when it had a FAT filesystem.
2q) How to do undo operation,i tried to change the filesystem type to fat/ntfs in terminal using command --sudo mkfs -t FAT /dev/sda5.
Result:its showing text message-'mkfs.FAT: No such file or directory'(not in single quote)
I had very imp data in d:drive

The system asked me to reboot and I just shut down the computer.Some hours ago, I wanted to start the computer and the system halted after the first logo showed of Ubuntu, after 15 minutes waiting, nothing happened. I tried to push keys on the keyboard, nothing helped (I even couldn't put on CAPS or num lock on the keyboard).After a secoind reboot I didn't even saw the Ubuntu logo. When there's a black screen, it just sits there.I have no idea if there was a kernel update (I assume there was, because the system wanted me to reboot)

I just loaded octave. I ran through a few examples of how to implement a script file. Everything works until I get to "plot". When I run the "plot" command I get the following.
octave:2> test1.m
error: can't perform indexing operations for <unknown type> type
sh: gnuplot: not found
Just to double check my work, I ran the following code:
y=[1 2 3];
plot(y);

for christmas my parents got both my younger sister and i acer mini computers, model d250-1958. my sister was trying to change her password that lets herself as a particular user log in. somehpw she messed up the password and its not what she thought it was and now she doesn't have any way of accessing anything. i thought that there might be an ovveride system or a reseting trick. i've looked in the manual but cant find anything of the sort for either of the two options.

I am using Ubuntu after a BSOD error. Ubuntu is awesome, I can access all my windows files, however, I need to access my programs on windows. Here's what happened- I accidentally changed permissions after getting a virus. I then tried to do a system restore and during that process the computer crashed. When I try to boot to windows in every possible mode, I am always left with the dreaded blue screen of death.

Is there a way I can save system settings and have yast revert to a config file in case I ever need to reinstall the system again? I hate having to configure the firewall, runlevels, samba shares, samba workgroup, apparmor, and all the other junk after every install. It's not like I install often, but should suse 11.5 or 12 roll out, I'd like it to be a snappy upgrade.
