Slackware :: Everything Is Working Fine Automount Not Working?
Jan 10, 2011
I have Slackware 13.1 with kernel 2.6.37. Everything is working fine, except that I can't mount any CD/DVD and automount is not working either. If I connect any USb to my laptop it doesn't automount, I need to manually mount it. The same case happens with CD/DVD only that I can't mount any CD/DVD even manually. Here's the output:
Code:
bash-4.1# mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom
mount: block device /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only

I have had my computer set to dual boot Windows 7 for months now with no issue. Now today when I logged on to Slackware (13.1 x86_64) it suddenly stopped recognizing that my Windows 7 drive has anything on it. Fdisk cannot see any partitions anymore. Yet I can reboot the computer and run Windows 7 off it just fine. The windows drive should be /dev/sdb with sdb1 being its system reserved partition and sdb2 being the actual Windows partition.
Dmesg sees that it is there like my other drives, but it appears that the Windows 7 partition is not unaccessable to anything in Linux.
How could this work yesterday yet today it doesn't? I didn't change anything.

today when I inserted my usbpen in the laptop, automount did not work. I tried another pen with same result. I checked with mountmanager and both pens were working and actually mounted them manually, but automount which worked perfectly yesterday now is dead.I found a workaround installing usbmount from standard repository and now automount works again but usbpens are mounted in /MEDIA/usbx instead with their names as before and I have to open a root terminal tu unmount.
Unfortunately I use a pen for backup with unison and changing the mount position I have to modify unison profile every time, which is pretty uncomfortable. The problem May arise from the fact thgat yesterday I tried to manually compile and install the canon driver for my printer and trying to solve dependencies I had to compile and install Glib-2.26 pango-1.28.3 and gtk+2.22 from their sources.I did not manage to get a working canon driver but i may have made a mess with usb automount function.program/service is responsible for usb automount in ubuntu 10.10 so that i can reinstall or reconfigure it.

I don't use a KDE or Gnome, but want to have USB and cdrom media automounted by ivman. That worked fine with OS 11.1 (with the help of a selfmade "mountpolicies.fdi"). I installed and started ivman on a freshly installed and up-to-date OS 11.2 running icewm as WM, but an USB stick or USB disk is only automounted if ivman is restarted after every insertion of the device, or if it is present at boot time.

I recently installed UbuntuStudio. I have five partitions on the harddrive that I like to have automounted, because they contain a lot of virtual links between each other, and if the links are to an unmounted partition they appear to be dead links and do not mount the partition when selected.I have tried every combination of the media mount options in gconf-editor, but nothing works. If I have to edit etc/fstab, what do I need?
Code:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.

I'm running Debian sid and currently have xfce 4.8.0 installed. I have the thunar-volman package and it is configured to automount everything (cdrom & usb). I have hal, udev, gamin and autofs installed as well. For some reason though, automount just isn't working. It's starting to annoy me.I can mount the devices manually.I looked around already but most posts just advise you to install hal or something.

I downloaded the 10.10 desktop version. Everything seems to work fine except Firefox. Sure, I can get on, but getting out is something of a chore. Half the time the page freezes and won't allow me to try anything else.
I tried: Clicking on the red "X" = nothing
Right-clicking on the page and selecting "Back" = nothing
Right-clicking on the task bar and selecting "Close" = nothing
Restarting the computer = nothing
The only way to get out when that happens, is to hold down the "Power" button. I know it's not good for the computer, but being held hostage in Firefox is not good for my patience. Even that is a crap-shoot. Sometimes it boots back up fine, only to resume what happened before the power went out when I log back into Firefox. Sometimes it won't let me out until I scan back to the main page by using the arrows one page at a time. This kind of thing never happened when I had the 9.04.

I'm having problems installing or removing anything from Debian. The whole problem has kind of looped for me for half a day now.
I installed Debian with the latest release and when I booted into the system, everything was working fine except the screen was blurry. So I spent a few hours looking for a way to install nvidia drivers. Trying to used the nv drivers, (vesa before) caused gdm to stop working with "no screen found" errors and when i finally installed the nvidia drivers, it seems to have reverted my kernel back. I was at 686 before and now I'm on 486, giving me an extra option between 486 and 686 in grub.
This was fine to me but when I boot into the 486 I get notifications about updates close to a gig in download size. I didn't want to download it in fear of breaking the system but did after package manager would refuse to install or uninstall anything without installing/uninstalling the gigs worth of updates.
During the update, my screen kind of malfunctioned and i rebooted going into ctrl+alt+f1. When I came to, the gdm wouldn't start, kind of looping to the login screen and blanking out, never fully drawing it. I tried a few configurations in /etc/X11/xorg.conf to no avail and decided to try the 686 configuration.
Xserver wouldn't boot with noscreens found untill I decided to try to install the same nvidia drivers. While I was still on the 686 kernel, it would not boot but when I rebooted and went into the 486 kernel, it logged back in to what seemed before updating.

I'm probably missing something noobishly obvious here. I recently did a fresh Lucid install on my main desktop box, which had previously been running Karmic. With Lucid I can no longer use fstab in my laptops to automatically mount the desktop's shared media drive. Using the mount command works fine. One laptop is running Karmic, the other is running Hardy. This is the line in fstab on both laptops:
Code:
//192.168.0.123/multimedia /media/multimedia cifs username=x,password=y 0 0
This is unchanged since the desktop was running Karmic, where auto-mounting from the lappys worked just

I thought that setting up the PATH variable was a must if we wanted to use java or javac commands on linux (preferably in the bashrc file), but I am able to use these commands anywhere without setting up the PATH variable.. Similarly, without specifying '.' in the CLASSPATH variable (in fact, not specifying the CLASSPATH variable at all), I am able to access class files in the same directory. How is it possible ?

I'm running ubuntu 10.04 and suddenly when plugging my cameras or usb sticks, they don't automount anymore, but they did before. What changed is last days I tried to build and install nautilus-sendto manually from source, and it required dependencies including GTK+3.0 (unstable), I don't know what happened exactly or if my system is broken, because some of this packages built and installed fine and others failed. If someone wants to help with that to get my installation to its original state it would be awesome.I could mount my usb stick installing usbmount, it worked, but I didn't need this before. What I want now is to mount my cameras: here is the output for:
Code:
lsusb
gvfs-mount -l

I have an old averatec machine (3200 series) Slackware 12.2 is working fine out of the box (13.1 is not even booting after installing, so i decided not to work in this direction) except for the wireless. the wireless is working some seconds after putting the interface up, later stops working, and if you mess around a little with the interface, the computer will hang (caps and num lock will flash and thats all) I tried diffferents kdrivers (right now i downloaded the latest linuxwireless and im using those drivers) same situation. was working fine with kernel 2.24 and old drivers (the iface wass called ra0, right now is wlan0) I know this is not much information, but i will try to get another pc to make a ssh and beeing able to get some traces.

I have searched around a bit for a knetwork manager issue I am having on my opensuse 11.2 32 bit install. My wireless card is an 04:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01) I am currently using the Broadcom wl driver
I am on the Internet with this machine as I am typing using the older "ifup" method. I am having great difficulty connecting to the Internet when I use knetwork manger though. The strange part is when I am connected to my router with knetwork manager, I can log into my Router, but I can not get to any web-page/ping any outside address.
so far the best (I was able to locate) advice I was able to get is located in this post. < Broadcom wireless, partchy internet - openSUSE Forums > following a posted how to to disable IPV6 (I suspect this may be the issue??), I was unable to locate modprobe.conf, or modprobe.conf.local, even after I updated via updatdb. I gave a shot at entering in "disable_ipv6=1" into "menu.lst". However, this did not solve my issue with knetwork manager. If my network information is needed when I am "connected" utilizing knetwork manager

I have a DSL connection attached to a wireless router at home which at the moment working fine on my windows laptop. However I have problems connecting to the internet via my desktop which has fedora on it and TP-Link PCI Wireless card. The connection with the wireless network keeps restarting, disconnecting and reconnecting and when it is connected either no internet or very slow sluggish internet barely loading the webpage title.
I installed Ubuntu and the same problem is happening.Yesterday However everything was working fine even on the desktop.
When I first installed Fedora about 4 days ago I had the same problem but when i restarted the computer everything worked fine. Restarting the machine does not seem to solve the problem now. Please help me diagnose the problem here as it's really hard for me to extend a cable from my desktop to my router. And I need to internet on my Desktop.

I got connecting to our NAS over NFS working perfectly. Direct NAS Reading & Writing - How? But on Saturday I found out it had stopped working. For no apparent reason, not straight after an update either I don't think. When I manually try to mount --verbose:
mount 192.168.100.14:/IHL /mnt/IHL --verbose
mount: no type was given - I'll assume nfs because of the colon
mount.nfs: timeout set for Tue Jul 6 14:48:32 2010
mount.nfs: text-based options: 'addr=192.168.100.14'
mount.nfs: Unable to connect to 192.168.100.14:111, errno 111 (Connection refused)
mount.nfs: mount to NFS server '192.168.100.14:/IHL' failed: System Error: Connection refused
Corresponding fstab line that used to work just fine. 192.168.100.14:/IHL /mnt/IHL nfs auto 0 0 For now, I can drop back to Samba but this is a PITA as I can't open OpenOffice documents and write to them directly on the NAS. The fact smb://192.168.100.14/IHL works proves networking wise we're cool too. There is no firewall between this PC and the NAS, the NAS is instructed to allow my PC's LAN IP full access. OpenSuse's software firewall has been told to allow NFS Client too. Why would this setup break out of nowhere? How can I debug this best? I see nothing relevant in /var/log/messages How can I get it to work again? A hopeful reboot didn't do its usual wonders...

I have a dual boot config with
sda1 /boot
sda2 Win7
sda3 /
sda4 Truecrypt Partition
i have grub1 working and chaonloading truecrypt loader if i choose "win7" in grub1 menu I want to install a new kubuntu (no upgrade) I have read that that there are problems with grub2 and truecrypt actually a bug that grub2 dont chainloads truecrypt boot loader many ppl seem to have problems with grub2 then i read somewhere that ubuntu install is not asking for grub2 to be installed and just installing it. is this right?
i think at least for the alternative install cd its wrong. i installed it on another pc and it asked me! it works for win7 and Ubuntu and i guess its grub2 but there is no truecrypt installed anyway, i wanted to ask is the live cd installer asks me for grub2 and what is the best and easiest way to stay with my grub and just change the menu.lst to the new kernel (i guess there will be one)

This is my startup routine:
I log on and Network Manager shows no wireless adapter.
I go to System > Administration > Network:
There are two entries in the Devices tab: Wireless and Ethernet
As soon as I double click the Wireless device and the configuration pops up, the device starts working (no changes to the settings are made)
I have the following set to ON:
- Controlled by Network Manager
- Activate device when computer starts
- Allow all users to enable and disable this device

I just started having a problem with my 10.04 laptop a few days ago, maybe Thursday, last week. When the computer is plugged into my home network (standard 192.168.1.1 sort of IPs) it works fine, but when I try to connect to my work network (130.15.90.XX) I am unable to pick up an IP. The router in my office is working fine, all the windows boxes can connect.
I've also noticed that when the computer is plugged in at work the notification icon for the networking indicates it is looking for a wireless connection (rather than the normal up/down arrows), even if wireless is deactivated
I can set a static IP in /etc/network/interfaces and everything works, so it seems to be a DHCP problem?

I recently installed KDE in my ubuntu 10.10. To access KDE, I want to use
startx /usr/bin/startkdeBut using it disables sound in KDE (Sound is working fine in GNOME). It doesn't sound for anything like login sound, totem, mplayer or any other playerBut when I press Alt+Ctrl+F1 to change to virtual console, the playback resumes from where it was in time and when coming back Alt+Ctrl+F7 and the time in totem (or any other player) doesn't move. While log out also it doesn't play logout sound and doesn't logout, so I have to press Ctrl+Alt+F1 so that logout sound play then it exits. When starting KDE by kdm or gdm, the sound works normally. But I don't want to login again using kdm or gdm and not to use root user to start kdm or gdm.I don't know what is the difference between when KDE is started by startx or by kdm/gdm where the same user login in kdm/gdm as that for startx
