Fedora :: Graphics Chipset Stopped Working - Causes Kernel Crash ?

Jul 13, 2009

My graphics card (00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03))

used to work fine, but yesterday I opened glest and it crashed my computer within 5 seconds. No picture was ever displayed. I downloaded another 3D game called Nogravity (Glest being my only one, I wanted something else to test) and it crashed after a few minutes of play and I had to restart. After all the crashes kerneloops came up with a report.

Here is the most recent one:

Code:

I did recently notice that I have no direct 3D rendering, it comes up with something like: No (LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT SET)

I do not know whether I used to have it, but I do know that 3D apps used to run perfectly well. (In fact the stability of 3D apps was what converted me from Ubuntu where they crashed every 5 minutes)

I ran glxgears for 5 seconds and it gave me 420 FPS.

Debian Hardware :: Crash With Intel Chipset And Newer Kernels?

Aug 31, 2010

What seems like forever ago now I tried to install Linux on this Intel 82855GME chipset laptop I was given. I started off with Fedora because it's what I'm most familiar with, unfortunately the live disk would crash at GDM so I could never get anywhere with it. Even doing a console based install would crash, but it at least pointed me in the right direction, it seemed the kernel was crashing for some reason (see image)Fedora livedisk crashlivedisk-error.jpg (95.96 KiB) Viewed 695 times

Ubuntu :: Get The Graphics Working Correctly - Driver Compatibility And The Kernel

Aug 24, 2010

I am trying to get the graphics working correctly on an old HP Compac d220 mt machine that has an Intel 82845G Graphics Controller.

[Code]...

The latest driver I can find is: Intel(R) Graphics Driver - Linux*[IntelGraphics_060704.tar.gz] dated 12/17/2004 Version 20041217 When I started to install this driver I got a message that said that it was compatible with kernel version 2.4.(+ numbers I don't remember) So I stopped the installation. My question is what will / could happen if I go ahead and try to complete the driver install? Will I hose the entire system? I am fiddling with the kernel if I continue to install the driver.

IF it does break, would it be possible to undo the driver install using the text based root console with networking via the recovery option or will that too be inoperable if I hose the system. Should it break and I can get to the recovery option and open a terminal. How would i uninstall it? I am just getting reacquainted with Linux again after 20 years. I am not using the advanced package management tool to install the driver. The driver has it's own installation script. (have not looked to see if it has an uninstall script in the file list) I won't be able apt-get remove or dpkg purge anything.

When I try to use the automatic bug reporting, it fails to do it.

I have attached a screenshot of what happens when it doesn't report it.

Fedora :: Kernel Module Crash With Sound?

Dec 21, 2009

Sound disappears as soon as I try to use an application e.g. News Video Fox, CNN, BBC or playing a video disk or cd disk, and a kernel module crash is reported (listed below from logs) After this happens no sound, and the desktop freezes (X11 only Linux is fine). Restarting X obviously do not solve the problem.

It seems that Fedora 12 has sever problems with Intel Sound cards.

I guess it is not really a Kernel developers problem but more the authors for the sound module causing the crash. I already reported it through the popup to "kernel-oops" by clicking on the "black screen" popup reporting the crash on FC12.

Here follows the logs containing the crash info.

Fedora :: F14 Kernel Crash And Hard Freeze - Hang

There is nothing in particular that I am doing either, the problem happens when the machine is idol or when I am working in various apps.

The F14 system is completely up to date running kernel version 2.6.35.13-91.fc14.i686. The following error below is from the automatic bug reporting tool and I have reported this using the tool:

Fedora :: Yum Update To 162 - Kernel - Graphics Are Hosed

Dec 9, 2009

I've been away from computers/Linux for a while so I'm not up on the unix wrangling anymore. So what happened is I started yum extender and it wanted to update. Fine. I let it. I then notice a new kernel is going in so I decide to reboot. I notice different graphics behavior, then I go into my KDE and the graphics are hosed -- as they were when I tried Kubuntu 9.10, which made me come back to my old favorite Fedora. I freak, calm down, reboot (I don't get the old grub? screen offering me kernel boot choices, it just goes into its "ribbon run" at the bottom of the screen) and go into Gnome. Okay, Gnome works -- but no network, i.e., no eth0, i.e., no Internet to come whining to y'all. I then grab the live install disk, get Internet back -- but I don't know how to access the drive or make any changes!

I cry, dry my eyes, try rebooting and banging like a monkey on the keyboard during startup to see if I can get some sort of rescue mode or grub kernel choice list. Yes! After fifth reboot a random pawing of the F keys produces a grub list, I choose 2.6.31.6-145.fc12.i686 and get back to my previous functionality: KDE and Internet work. Culprit is no doubt 2.6.31.6-162.fc12.i686. I would therefore like to know how to boot to the grub manager and get a choice list of kernels to boot

Fedora :: YUM Stopped Working In F12

Jan 22, 2010

Installed F12 a while back. Everything was working fine. Then I wanted to install perl-cpan, so when I run "yum install perl-cpan", or "yum update", it hangs on "Loaded plugins: presto, refresh-packagekit".

I've let it hang there for hours, nothing ever happens.

For the first week or so, Yum worked fine, I could manually update as I've done on other Fedora versions without any issue.

In the Gnome gui I have automatic updating disabled. As far as I can tell, yum-updatesd isn't running and isn't enabled. I wanted to update things manually for a while until I got this new box "settled in".

I know I can install cpan via other methods, but this strange behavior with Yum has me worried.

I ran all the "yum clean" commands, and now yum actually displays errors:

Trying other mirror.

I get these errors over and over.

I read up on how to edit the /etc/yum/fedora.repo and fedora-update.repo files to fix this, BUT, I have no such files...

This is what I have:

The other interesting thing is that my /var/log/yum.log is 0 bytes.
Yet the yum.log-20100101 is 209709 bytes and shows all the updates I did just a month ago...

Where can I download the repo files from? How can I fix the repository?

When I try "yum repolist" I get the same errors.

Programming :: Netlink Sockets In Kernel And Ethernet Driver - Kernel Crash

Aug 31, 2010

I write the network driver. Transmission of packets in user space I do through netlink socket`s. In user space there is a handling of packets and their transmission on other device (however, it isn't important).

Problem in that any time, packets through the driver in system, and is reverse, are transferred normally. But then there comes the moment when the kernel crash. If to look in syslog it seems to me that comes deadlock. Also I think that it is related with netlink socket`s.

I can't find the information on that anywhere how correctly to use netlink socket`s in kernel space. Can at you will any a reason into the account of synchronization of sockets and the driver in kernel space?

I can give the driver code if it is necessary.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Kernel Not Recognizing Firewire 1394 Chipset?

Feb 7, 2011

I want to enable Firewire for my audio interface. I'm using ubuntu 10.10 (64 bit version).

lspci returns that I have a Texas instruments chipset. But when I search the kernal log file with grep, there are no references to this. I've searched for 1394, found nothing. I've read the whole thing and found references to Firewire_core, but looking online, this appears to be something else? I may be wrong, but my device is not recognised anywhere, as far as I can tell.

I have checked in Synaptic that I have the 1394 libraries installed, I do. And checked their dependencies are present.

I know that the device and the mobo are fine, as windows identifies the device with no trouble.

Can anyone tell me, what universe and multiverse means in relation to Synaptic packages, and how to enable these settings?

Also, should I expect my Firewire device to appear in the Places menu when it is recognised? It hasn't as yet, and I don't seem to be able to select for use as an audio interface in Ardour, the linux studio-recording program.

Maybe I've missed it completely, but I think the key problem is thers no reference to 1394 in my Kernel log.

lspci returns
03:0e.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Texas Instruments TSB43AB23 IEEE-1394a-2000 Controller (PHY/Link)

Fedora :: Kernel Changed After Installing Nvidia Graphics Drivers

Jan 14, 2010

im having an intel E2180 processor with 2 gb RAM and an nvidia 8400gs graphics card. Lately i installed Fedora 12 on my system and found that with default settings the desktop 3d is not working. so installed the kmod-nvidia using yum after following the instruction.i also edited the grub.conf file to rdblacklist=nouveau to blacklist nouveau drivers.

Then once i rebooted i found two kernels in grub ie the old one and the one with PAE extension. when i booted into the old kernel its Xwindows failed to load showing a black screen and when i tried the new PAE kernel it booted in 640 x 480 resolution. {earlier i was getting a resolution of 1440 x 900 on my 17" widescreen monitor}. it also showed that the nvidia drivers failed to load. I also read in some forums that the PAE kernels are for systems with 4gb+ of ram. So i thought it better to reinstall the whole thing.
then i reinstalled the whole operating system using my fedora 12 dvd and performed the 'upgrade or replace the existing linux distribution'. interestingly now my older kernel has disappeared and the PAE kernel is the one that is remaining.

Fedora :: Skype Is Stopped Working

I am still struggling to get skype running on that platform, but it hardly works. I could make calls, the microphone was recognized and everything worked as it should be.

Until today. For reasons beyond my scope skype stopped working, and after I have looged in with my skype-name I got the above Aborted-message again. Even after the reboot of my Dell Laptop skype refused to work.I even installed all the recommended yum packages I found in this skype forum topic. Can anyone please advise me how to properly install a stable version of skype with Fedora 12? Hardware :: FC13 Graphics Crash During Boot-up?

Nov 4, 2010

I've got a Dell Latitude E6510. I've got FC13 and Windows 7 dual booting on the machine. Both were living in harmony with one another, no problem. Only issue I was having, was that when I plugged my external 19" dell monitor, my linux would do 1 of 2 things..

1) if plugged up prior to boot, it would black screen after the fedora boot screen that shows the blue heart

2) if plugged up post boot, it would freeze the computer

The last thing I did to troubleshoot the issues was install system-display-config, maximized the screen resolution in the settings of that app, and set the resolution to 1650 x 900 (i think it was 900, not sure). After reboot, I now get the screen below after the fc blue heart screen loads.
