Slackware :: Conky With NVidia Support - Libxnvctrl Missing
Jan 8, 2011
Doing some research I found that in conky 1.8.1 there is support for nvidia using libxnvctrl. I am trying to compile it but I am missing libxnvctrl. Does any body know where I can get it?

I own an ASUS N61JV-X2 notebook PC that has an Intel HD IGP, nVIDIA GeForce GT 325M GPU, and nVIDIA Optimus technology. I am running OpenSUSE 11.4 64 bit with GNOME. I used to be a former Ubuntu user. I used Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat 64 bit. In Ubuntu, it was not recommended that I install the proprietary nVIDIA binary drivers because it would cause me to log into a TTY console upon reboot.
nVIDIA states that they have no plans to support Optimus technology in Linux at any time. Would it be recommended that I install the proprietary nVIDIA binary drivers in OpenSUSE 11.4 64 bit with GNOME? Will I get the same problem as in Ubuntu? How do I do this?

It seems that Conky is broken, if I try to do anything with it(even after complete removal and reinstallation) I get this output.
Code:
Conky: missing text block in configuration; exiting
***** Imlib2 Developer Warning ***** :
This program is calling the Imlib call:
imlib_context_free();
With the parameter:
context
Being NULL. Please fix your program.
I don't know what to do?

I run my conky as one bar at the top of the screen (Ratpoison). It is frustrating when % values jump between 0->10% for example and then the entire bar shifts. How can I make it display 000% 010% 100%?

I thought I would try out Eric's KDE 4.5.1 and Robby's new Xorg pacakges. The upgrade went off with out a hitch, but now when I try to launch conky I get
conky: error while loading shared libraries: libmowgli.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
So I rebuilt conky and reinstalled libmowgli ran ldconfig but I still get the error.

I am trying to build conky from SlackBuilds.org using sbopkg, but the build fails every single time. It may be worth noting that I am trying to build with extra options, namely --disable-x11 --disable-xdamage --disable-own-window --disable-xft.
This is so I can have a cli-only conky that I can pipe to my status bar. This has worked in the past, but now the build is failing with a seemingly unrelated error.
It states:
Code:
At the end of the build. I tried removing the option --enable-audacious, but that only resulted in an error which complained that yet another option (--enable-rss=yes) was a "Command not found". This continues as I remove options. I would like to keep many of those options active as I have a need for certain features.
This is a copy of the SlackBuild being used:
Code:
I have a full install of Slackware64 v13.1, so audacious is installed. I don't know what else could be going wrong, and I don't know why this worked in the past.

my Conky needed the Coretemp, and a friend of LQ told me to run modprobe, and it works greate! no every time I start my system, I need to run the modprobe to add the module to Kernel. How can I put the coretemp to start every startup? (I think there is somenthing to do with a file on the rc.module at /etc/rc.d/, but I'm afraid to do something stupid...) I want to make the conky running after start of the system. How can I do this?

I've been doing some looking around on the general issues of ATI vs. NVIDIA for linux. I'm buying a new laptop, and obviously want to maximize linux compatibility.
Here's what I've understood so far. For the people who know: is my understanding right?
ATI has open source drivers, but they're kind of spotty. Also, ATI relies on the vendors to provide drivers, so if the company selling the laptop doesn't provide linux drivers, you're out of luck.
NVIDIA doesn't have open source drivers, but their closed source drivers provide good linux support. They provide drivers directly, rather than relying on the laptop vendor, so chances of linux support are better.
Anybody else have experience/knowledge in this area? I'm looking to do things like 3D gaming, video editing, playing back HD online video, possibly even some graphics rendering if I decide to pick that up...
Most of the laptops I'm looking at either have the NVIDIA GT425M or the ATI HD5730.

This works on my Slackware64 13.1 using KDE 4.4.4, Conky version 1.8.0. This is a simple .conkyrc tweak that doesn't need feh, it doesn't have the distracting faun shadow-border and most importantly, it doesn't disappear when you click your desktop (On my system anyway). These are the relevant sections to edit:
Code:
own_window_colour black
own_window_hints undecorated,below,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager
own_window_transparent yes
own_window_argb_130
own_window_type override
own_window yes
I found that getting rid of the own_window_argb_values yes suggested in other fixes and replacing it with a specific alpha and then changing window type to override solved all my issues. I've noticed no bugs or strange happenings. This seems to be a common problem with a lot of workaround solutions. I think this is a much more elegant way. Edit: Not persistant... After 2 reboots it's back to normal.

Said that all the config i find put all the info in one place of the screen, in this example on the right side:
url
or like conky colors where you can put in either side, or other complex examples that use folders with images..that at least i need one day to study all the variables it has...
What i want is something simple, in my black background i dont want images and effects, only white simple text.
My problem is: i want for instance my specs above, my log info in the middle, my music info bellow (above my clock) and in conky config i'm hitting my head in the wall....
For instance if i use my facebook script to appear in the midle how the hell can i put my music info bellow without ruined the facebook in the midle...do i need 2 conky configs?

it's my understanding, from reading through the forum, that support for older nVidia cards is not included with the official nVidia Kernel Module (kmod-nvidia : RPM Fusion) from what i can tell... it is recommended that users with these cards try the 'nouveau' driver, not used by default in F12 ('nv' is default)... to obtain reasonable functionality.
i'm also under the impression that you need to specify the 'nouveau' driver manually in the xorg.conf... and that an xorg.conf needs to be generated, because F12 does not generate one upon setup. what i'm hoping is to get the nod from experienced users here that my impressions on this are correct.

It would appear Nvidia are to drop support for the 'nv' driver, recommending using the Vesa driver instead until you install their proprietary driver.Read the article here:

I am thinking of buying a Lenovo IdeaPad Z360, it has a GeForce G 310M.
I can't find much info on Linux support but an Ubuntu thread seems to suggest it isn't good. Can someone confirm that this card works with the latest nVidia drivers on Linux (Arch in particular)? It'd be even better if you had the Ideapad Z360 and could report on any other hardware problems I might have?
NVidia seems to say they have support (listed without the G however), but I've heard conflicting reports and so would like to check.
EDIT: I also found these:

[url]
Does the Z360 have optimus and the Z560 not so? I can't detect that either of them have it but occasionaly, someone says that they do. Can anyone confirm this? I thought the only real difference was the screen size.

I have installed Audacious and audacious-plugins-freeworld-mp3 on F15. MP3 support now works (i.e.: mp3 files are being played) but audacious does not show me the scroll bar/widget with which I can move within a track. The horizontal line of said widget is being displayed but it's not showing the button which marks the offset within a track and clicking on the horizontal line has no effect.

I installed slackware 13.1 x86_64 bit with multilib, and its been about a month already, I'm really enjoying slackware but I am being troubled with my nvidia card, and I need to get my 3D acceleration working. And I've been looking around the net for information and kept on trying to make my nvidia card to work but to no avail. I cant get X to start, once I put in a xorg.conf stating to use the nvidia card. After troubleshooting for almost 2 weeks and now at my wits end, I now come humbly looking for help in linuxquestions slackware community forum.I've installed nvidia 64 bit kernel, drivers from slackbuilds (version 256.44). The laptop model I'm trying to get it working is an -ASUS K52J Intel Core i3 2.40Ghz with 2GB RAM and with an Nvidia Geforce 310M with 1GB dedicated VRAM.
