All I really want it to do is play Netflix online, and movies I have stored to an external hard drive. Maybe some torrenting and VERY light document work. I want it to be fast, and stable. Not bloated with all kinds of stuff I don't need like Ubuntu and mint, or crash like fedora every 20 mins.

Aug 25, 2010I run an ISP with various servers such as mail servers.Once something works I let it run forever. Thus I have a mail server running FC5 on a Mach Speed pm400 via chip set motherboard.Recently the motherboard died, and I had to use a back up board to get it going again.I am now out of back up boards and need to purchase a new set for the future.However the mail server software will not activate the IDE DMA on these newer boards because the chip set drivers are not in the last kernel package that yum would download for FC5.
1.) Is there an easy fix to this problem to get the DMA working?
2.) Do I have to download and compile a latest kernel (2.6.x) to get the right drivers?
3.) Since FC5 is fully modularized, is there an easy way to create a similar kernel from a download without having to manually turn all the modules on?
4.) CAn I simply use the original .config from my existing kernel in the new one?
Slackware :: Installing Newer Software From Source When Older Version Installed From A Slackbuild
Jan 4, 2011I have HandBrake 0.9.4 installed from Slackbuilds.org, but a new version came out yesterday that I want to install, but it isn't up on slackbuilds yet. Can I install it from source without doing anything to the old install?
When I installed it from slackbuilds, the slackbuild script also installed all the external multimedia libraries that I need. If I use removepkg (or whatever the command is) to remove the old HandBrake before installing the new one, will that also remove the multimedia packages that were installed along with handbrake? They were all built into the same .tgz
On my work computer so I can't do anything with it right now anyway, so maybe a slackbuild will be up when I get home.
Ubuntu Installation :: Which Distro And Version For Older Computer?
Jan 20, 2010this is my first time actually asking for help here, so forgive me if I make any mistakes. The other day I was trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on my mom's old system (not too old, has vista on it) and even from the live cd it wouldn't boot. Then I tried 8.04 because I know that works on my XP system. However it would freeze during boot but at least showed that it was booting (the bar was starting to fill).
The system is an eMachine T5226:
CPU : Intel Pentium D Processor 925 (Dual-Core)
64-bit processor with Intel EM64T Technology
(Each core operates at 3.0GHz | 2 x 2MB L2 Cache | 800MHz FSB)
Operating System : Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium
Chipset : Intel 945G

Since we bought it it's been upgraded to 2 GB of ram and has a nVidia 8400gs video card and a belkin wireless adapter now. I can't understand why the live cds won't fully boot since my single core 2.2Ghz boots just fine with 8.04.
I was thinking of trying 6.06 to see of that might work. However I was unsure if the system is capable of running Ubuntu and might need Kubuntu or another distro.

I have a second free partition ext2 available, sda2, and GRUB is working fine for me on boot.
(machine also doesn't have boot from USB option, yes, it's old, a project I am working on, I have Nimblex in CD now, I think it's a live cd, I would like to try a few different ones by installing to sda2 and wiping if ng.)

We need a command line version of Linux like ttylinux. Any command line will do with the latest kernel. It should be around 50 megs.
But the problem is, all these small Linux versions are LiveCD or have a compressed file system.
We need a SMALL linux distro, that we can install UNCOMPRESSED (no squashfs etc) on a hard disk.
This is so simple I'm sure I'm missing something..

Feb 18, 2010I think the title says it all really - I've installed Mint onto a Acer aspire 5315 laptop. Its a dual boot system using Vista Basic. Grub works perfectly and to be honest Mint is great. really enjoying playing and learning. My problem is that the laptop overheats when using Mint - the cpu fan doesn't cut in and the laptop shuts down to protect the system. According to a swift google this seems to occur with mint (possibly particularly with Acer's) and maybe with other distro's too. However I'd like to keep trying to see if i can find one that works.
So my rather obvious newbie question is can I just get another distro dvd and install this onto the partition containing mint thus deleting the previous install? If I did this would Grub show the new distro ok or would it keep searching for Mint. I have a back up so if all else fails I can reinstall everything but that will have to wait till I get home

Nov 26, 2010I have Ubuntu 10.4 on one system and I like it very well for having it just a short time. I have installed Kubuntu 10.4 last night on a older system and so far I am having problems learning the OS. I think its just learning the KDE. Anyway my system has a 850 mhz processor, 765 ram and 128 mb GeForce 5200 graphics card. Just would like to confirm my system would run it suffecient or I should go with something lighter. So far I seem to like Ubuntus Gnome much better but am willing to give KDE some time.

Jul 26, 2010I've been having a problem on my AMD based machine, 4cpu, gigabyte ga-ma78gm-s2h Mobo, 8GB mem, two 2 terabyte Sata HDs.One thing I've found is that any kernel after 2.6.32-17 has a randomness at boot time whether the system will completely boot or not.
For instance just today I downloaded and installed 2.6.32-24
It fails to boot (I've tried cold boot, warm boot).Running its repair also fails to completely boot.My experience is that if I keep trying it "may" eventually boot but I believe there was some change after 2.6.32-17-generic that's causing the problem.Because as with 2.6.32.23... which also fails to complete bootup many times... eventually my guess is that 2.6.32.24 will also boot "sometimes".But why does 2.6.32.17 always boot for me? Something changed and its not my setup.

I do not have admin rights nor can I get them so using aptitude is out of the question. I was told I should compile the old version with the current one. I am very new to this sort of thing and haven't a clue what to do or how to go about compiling my program once I have gotten the older version.

Nov 12, 2010I've recently bought a Toshiba Satellite C650 with the following system configuration: 3 GB DDR3 Memory, a DualCore Intel Core i3 at 2266 MHz, 320 GB, 5400 RPM, SATA-II Hard Disk and an integrated Intel(R) HD Graphics video card.
I tried at first to install Ubuntu 10.10 through Wubi. That didn't seem to work, as my laptop froze at the moment where all the numbers and letters appear and my hardware is checked (I'm kind of new to this, sorry). A restart was needed. Next, I tried to boot the same distro with a USB Live stick. The same thing happened again.
At first I thought that the iso file was guilty for this, but then I tried a bunch of other Linux distros such as Fedora, Mandriva, EasyPeasy, Puppy, Sugar on a Stick and Slax. I even burnt a Slax Live CD. Nothing changed. I read somewhere that there are video cards that aren't compatible with Linux. Someone recommended me to update my drivers. After I did that, I tried again but without any luck. Another tip was to mess a bit in bios at my hard disk in order to change something from ahci to compatibility. That didn't work either.
I really don't know what to do.

Mar 18, 2011If you really want to learn C/C++, get set up on a Linux box with a full gcc dev system. I fixed up an old P4 Machine with 2gig ram and 80gig HD to install Linux on. Don't know anything about Linux yet but installing several distros for evaluation, but a thought occured to me. Is there a particular distro that has this "full gcc dev system" in the initial install or is this something that I will have to install after the OS is up and running on the machine? Is one distro better suited for programming than another?
