Security :: Diagnosing Reason Of Server Shut Down

Apr 3, 2010

There is a server which was installed 3 days back. It got Cent OS 5.4 64 Bit with 4 GB RAM. Apache, MySQL, PHP and vsFTPd were installed using yum.Server was on the network and approx 100 visitors were on the website. All of sudden server got down. It stopping responding ping. Server guys told that server got down and after a request submission, they restarted server. However reason of the problem is still unknown. I logged in to shell via SSH and checked /var/log/messages file, but didn't find any record which indicate cause of system shutdown. However dates in this file aren't in chronological order.

Is there any way or log file to check for the exact reason, why system got down. One reason could be hardware fault (for that I am going to ask hosting company to run diagnostics). Other reason could be a software/os bug. Is there any tool / log file to check and diagnose the cause.

Server :: WordPress Blogging Server Running Slow For What Reason?

May 16, 2009

I have a wordpress blogging server up and running and i've also got nagios monitoring the speed of webpage download etc.The thing is a couple of weeks ago nagios alerted me that the blog was returning pages really slow loading, when i went to the blog homepage for me also it was very slow. After about 30mins of http connections some finally loading and some not nagios stopped reporting issues, but thats not the end of the story, the graphing of speed i've got set-up on nagios shows quite clearly that ever since that big slow down the pages take avg of extra 2-3 seconds to load. However nothing drastic has changed and the datasize of the page hasn't really changed at all (also monitored).

During that weird period I carried out checks on the server itself like top, free -m, netstat (looking for maybe DOS attack number of connections), looked at mysql see if that was running slow and what processes it was running, checked on number of http processes see if they had ramped up, checked on php and web server errors see if they had increased some what as well. None of these things turned up anything noticeable to be causing such slow blog response. Now its still that average amount high and i'm lost at why this could be? Its niggling at me that something may have got in but i've taken several security steps to try and lock down the wordpress install etc.

General :: Diagnosing Heavy Cpu System Usage?

Jul 26, 2011

I have been encountering lots of heavy system cpu usage. It is sporadic, last for about 10 minutes, and brings everything else to crawl (latency of even typing characters into an editor or a terminal is painfully slow). My computer is an i7 quad, and all 8 logical cores fire at near 100% during these periods. I can see the usage clearly with htop. The red bars in htop indicate system use (I have attached a screen shot for an example). However, as there is no process per se, I have no clue what is causing it.

It is something I have to fix as the computer becomes unusable periodically throughout the day.I One thing to add, I am using the computer as a ltsp server on ubuntu, attaching to it using two thin clients. There is always heavy ethernet traffic through the second ethernet card. I don't know if this is related. However, I do think all this problem began when I installed the ltsp and switched to using a thin client.

Networking :: Diagnosing Connections: Slow Initial Connection?

Mar 28, 2010

I want to identify why my ISP is sometimes slow, and wonder how and what tools to use. The problem is as follows: While the lines are very fast, I experience that at times of day where there are presumably high traffic, a new initial connection is very slow and unstable. For example getting response from DNS is slow. And after getting the answer, getting response from a web server is also slow. Or sometimes there is no response at all, and I have to retry. Running a speed test will show high data rates. So it is only initial connection that is slow/unstable.

What is the explanation for these symptoms? Are there some tools and tests I can use to pinpoint the problem from home, without/before contacting the ISP?

Ubuntu Installation :: Distro For Diagnosing / Checking Hardware Components?

Jun 26, 2011

I have an old desktop I've been working to put back together and get working. When I took it apart I was under the assumption there was a problem with the mobo. Now I've begun to question that (the information that led to that belief was very slim).

I'm looking online right now but if anyone knows of a Linux distro I can use to diagnose/ check hardware in that machine. Something that runs live would be preferable. I'm thinking knoppix and am reading about it right now.

Fedora X86/64bit :: Running F11 I586 On Laptop / System Shut Off (not A Normal OS Shut Down, But A Sudden Power Off Without Warning)?

Oct 13, 2009

Offlate I installed F11 i586 on my laptop. F11 shares the hard disk with Vista Home Premium 32-bit. The problem is that when running F11 (or even Ubuntu), my system shut off suddenly(not a normal OS shut down, but a sudden power off without any warning). This could have been a hardware trouble(heating) but it doesn't happen with Vista.
Machine specifications:
Maker: Toshiba
Model: Satellite L305D-S5881
AMD Turion X2 Dual Core Mobile Processor RM-70
3072 MB 800 MHz SDRAM
I don't want to open up my machine unnecessarily, if it isn't a hardware issue.
I am not sure how to verify the bit length of the machine and the OS and does it create a compatibility issue ?
Your advise would be highly appreciated.

Server :: Sendmail Isn't Sending Mail For Some Reason And Keeping It In The Queue

May 14, 2011

Sendmail isn't sending mail for some reason and keeping it in the Queue. I attemped to flush them but it deferres the connection to the server in which it is trying to relay the message to. I have checked to see if there is a DNS error or anything like that. I attemped to flush the messages through webmin.

This is the result.

Code:

I am not finding anything in the logs to let me know their is an error. I can ping the mail servers that it is trying to send to. Now it has started delaying when ping MX servers. So I knew something was starting to mess with it. I have checked the /etc/hosts. It is correct. The server isn't black listed. Mail to root just gives me.

Ubuntu :: Set NTP To Point To An External Server, But My Thin Clients Don't Get That Setting For Some Reason?

Apr 8, 2011

I'm running several Ubuntu servers with LTSP thin clients in our classrooms. It's been a royal pain trying to get them to synchronize time properly.Currently I'm looking at 7 client's login screen and each one has different time. It's frustrating and I've done all the reading I could in regard to NTP and LTSP with time, etc.I'm trying to even set NTP to point to an external server, but my thin clients don't get that setting for some reason. They still pick whatever time they want to present to the end user. Once the user logs in, the time seems to be fine. It's just at the login screen.Since I'm no expert on NTP I figured I'd ask to see what users here thought.

EDIT - I was told that the GUI version of Ubuntu handles NTP at System-Administration-TimeAndDate. Is this true? I was told my /etc/ntp.conf file is empty because that file is only used in the server edition of Ubuntu.

- It's an old laptop and the lid switch is broken, so closing the lid won't work.

I am running a local webserver mainly for development. I have everything set up. The issue I currently have is that I cannot shut down the machine from the command line. I can issue the command but the machine remains on. I also cannot get to the desktop via VNC.The reason for this, is that there is no monitor attached so Ubuntu says that it is trying to run in Low Graphics Mode. I found this out as I plugged the monitor in to my server. So question is, how do I get around this? How can I set up Ubuntu to get past this, or do I need to install Ubuntu Server?

Debian :: The Server Will "freeze" On Occasion For No Known Reason?

Jul 29, 2011

For some reason, the server will "freeze" on occasion for no known reason. The processes keep running, but commands take a long time to complete. for example, I can open up two SSH windows. I can use the "top" command in one, and it will continue to show me the information, updating regularly. The memory and CPU useage both stay within acceptable norms. In the second SSH window, I can issue even simple commands like "ls" and it will freeze for about two minutes before completing the command. This is intermittent, but it's affecting the loading of websites on the server. It affects updates and upgrades, too.Everything freezes, but "top" just keeps happily running along.I'm suspecting a hard drive issue, although the hard drive checks clean when I check it.
