General :: Diagnosing Heavy Cpu System Usage?

Jul 26, 2011

I have been encountering lots of heavy system cpu usage. It is sporadic, last for about 10 minutes, and brings everything else to crawl (latency of even typing characters into an editor or a terminal is painfully slow). My computer is an i7 quad, and all 8 logical cores fire at near 100% during these periods. I can see the usage clearly with htop. The red bars in htop indicate system use (I have attached a screen shot for an example). However, as there is no process per se, I have no clue what is causing it.

It is something I have to fix as the computer becomes unusable periodically throughout the day.I One thing to add, I am using the computer as a ltsp server on ubuntu, attaching to it using two thin clients. There is always heavy ethernet traffic through the second ethernet card. I don't know if this is related. However, I do think all this problem began when I installed the ltsp and switched to using a thin client.

General :: Big Cpu Usage But Top Shows No Heavy Use Process

May 6, 2011

I have been running to a strange problem. For a few days, a few times a day something seems to take over my machine. Suddenly I can't type, or the key shows up about 5 seconds are being pressed, music players halt, etc. In anticipation, I had top and htop running. Sure enough, when this business begins htop reports all 8 cores firing at near 100% for a few minutes. However, top is telling me nothing about who is too blame. The cup%sy on top shows heavy usage, but the top processes are nothing remarkable, mostly just top and htop and conky, all running at around 1 or 2% on average. I am a bit puzzled as to why I can't see the cpu hog so that I figure out what is going on. My question then: Are there some processes (in kernel space?) that don't show up in top, yet which could be hogging the cpu?

Fedora :: PulseAudio Update - Heavy CPU Usage

I have Seamonkey set to play a .wav file when mail arrives. Since the latest update to pulseaudio, whenever mail arrives part of the sound plays, then one of my processor cores goes to 100% running pulseaudio. When I kill that process, the system returns to normal. This happens every time a sound is played.

Debian :: System Remains Sluggish After Heavy CPU Use

Jun 11, 2011

I have a problem with my Debian squeeze system. After I have run some CPU-intensive application for a while the system becomes sluggish. Ok, maybe one would expect that. But. The system remains sluggish even after that process has been killed and then top shows high cpu usage from unrelated processes and a high %sy percentage as well. I don't really know where to begin solving this problem except I've checked that this is specifically related to (at least) CPU use as opposed to heavy memory use or IO (by running an application with low mem/no io but high cpu use). I am running the latest standard kernel from squeeze, 2.6.32-5-686. Also, thing is, I remember having similar problems with other Linux distros before, where for example gzipping a large file would cause the same. I did not have similar problems on {Net,Open}BSD, so a hardware fault seems an unlikely reason to me.

Fedora :: Heavy Software Raid I/o Causes System Lockup

May 9, 2011

Here is the scenario: I load hundreds of h264/ac3 video clips from my HD video camera onto a four disk software raid stripe under Fedora 14 running the 2.6.38.3-15.rc1.fc15.x86_64 kernel. I then run a python script I've written to do batch process transcoding on the clips so that I can then edit them in cinelerra. FWIW, the transcode command is: nice ffmpeg -i infile.MTS -y -deinterlace -s hd720 -r 29.97 -acodec pcm_s16be -ar 48000 -ac 2 -vcodec mjpeg -qscale 2 out.mov. The python script batches these commands until they are all completed.

The system is capable of 16 concurrent threads and I set up 8 concurrent run queues to do the processing. Occasionally (about one in every 7 runs), the system will hard lockup during the batch. The X screens are still visible, but the mouse and keyboard are dead and the onscreen clocks freeze. The network io led still flashes but the hard disk io led is on solid at that point, leading me to theorize a kernel bug in the software raid handling. I am not able to remote log in and the system must be then hard rest with the reset button. After the reset there is no useful information in the system logs. this is a pretty uber SMP machine: two westmere quad core cpus, 24GB of ram and a four WD disk software stripe array running under the Intel ICH10 controller. I also have a RocketRaid controller installed but no disks are currently attached to it, and I disabled its bios in the setup. Additional disks under the ICH10 are an SSD system disk, and a sata insertion caddy that I usually have occupied with a disk I do backups to. So, all 6 channels on the ICH are usuallt occupied. General output from hdparm -i is:

Ubuntu :: System Stutter Running Heavy Load Through Wine?

Oct 26, 2010

I have recently begun contributing to the Folding@Home distributed computing project. Due to oversights in the application's design and to process the most advantageous work units, I need to run this command line app through wine. The application is very CPU/RAM intensive, but it does not put much load on the hard drive. It is multi-threaded and uses up to 100% of all 6 cores in my machine. I run it with a "nice" level of 19 with hopes that it won't slow down my normal desktop use.

Here is the problem... when running this setup, my system will frequently freeze for a fraction of a second and then resume. With the more complicated work units, this can happen 1-2 times per minute. During the freeze, the mouse will stop moving, videos stop playing, music pauses, etc. The system is completely unresponsive. However, each instance only lasts for a very short time. Since this happens so often, my productivity is negatively impacted (and it's very annoying).

I previously ran the native Linux version of F@H without this problem, but that was also processing much less complicated calculations. I have tried with wine 1.2.1 and 1.3.5 with the same results. The application does not have problems running on Windows. It has been suggested that the current Linux CPU scheduler is to blame, but is there anything I can do to resolve this now or work around it?

Ubuntu :: System Would Use Futura's Heavy Weight Option Instead Of Bold

Feb 27, 2011

I use the Futura font as my application/desktop/titlebars font, and I think it looks beautiful. However, its bold version is much too dark for my liking and it really spoils the look of my desktop when it's used in applications (Nautilus' sidebar and Libre Office's menubar are the main offenders), and what I would much rather is if the system would use Futura's heavy weight option instead of bold, but after searching gconf and for configuration files I can't work out where or how I would do this.

Security :: Diagnosing Reason Of Server Shut Down

Apr 3, 2010

There is a server which was installed 3 days back. It got Cent OS 5.4 64 Bit with 4 GB RAM. Apache, MySQL, PHP and vsFTPd were installed using yum.Server was on the network and approx 100 visitors were on the website. All of sudden server got down. It stopping responding ping. Server guys told that server got down and after a request submission, they restarted server. However reason of the problem is still unknown. I logged in to shell via SSH and checked /var/log/messages file, but didn't find any record which indicate cause of system shutdown. However dates in this file aren't in chronological order.

Is there any way or log file to check for the exact reason, why system got down. One reason could be hardware fault (for that I am going to ask hosting company to run diagnostics). Other reason could be a software/os bug. Is there any tool / log file to check and diagnose the cause.

Networking :: Diagnosing Connections: Slow Initial Connection?

Mar 28, 2010

I want to identify why my ISP is sometimes slow, and wonder how and what tools to use. The problem is as follows: While the lines are very fast, I experience that at times of day where there are presumably high traffic, a new initial connection is very slow and unstable. For example getting response from DNS is slow. And after getting the answer, getting response from a web server is also slow. Or sometimes there is no response at all, and I have to retry. Running a speed test will show high data rates. So it is only initial connection that is slow/unstable.

What is the explanation for these symptoms? Are there some tools and tests I can use to pinpoint the problem from home, without/before contacting the ISP?

Ubuntu :: 10.10 - CPU Usage In System Monitor

Jan 6, 2011

I am having a slight issue with my netbook (toshiba nb305) Just fully switched to Ubuntu 10.10 from Windows 7 starter so still a little new. I first installed the 32 bit version and everything was all sorts of peachy. But while reading some documentation on my model I ran across a cryptic line that hinted at my cpu being 64 bit. Did a little research on these forums and ran a command in terminal (honestly cant remember it) that listed the specs on my hardware. Sure enough my "width" was listed as 64 bit.

Well just to give it a shot I Downloaded the 64 bit version of 10.10 and Installed it on another partition. Up and running checked over everything. Appears to be normal. But on a whim I went into the System Monitor and noticed not one cpu but 2? Confirmed same situation on 32 bit.
Processor 0: Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU N455 @ 1.66 GHz
Processor 1: Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU N455 @ 1.66 GHz

Ok I was a tad bit confused so I was about to do a lil research on it. But then I noticed on the Resources tab that under 64 bit my CPU History graph showed both processors Pegged at 100% With nothing running except for the basics. Under the 32 bit it was reliantly low? I checked the Processes tab in both to confirm there wasnt a unusual process out there jamming up cpu usage but the highest cup listed was the gnome-system-monitor at like 40 est %. Nothing showing up using the CPU that vigorously.

Debian :: Memory Usage On A Squeeze System?

Mar 16, 2011

I use a Debian Squeeze system running off a flash drive, i.e. based on a custom Live image running in persistent mode. It runs great and I am grateful for the existence of Debian . However, I have a question. A lot of the machines I use this pen drive on are quite old, often with 512 MB RAM and old processors. I specifically built my system using XFCE and lightweight apps off an initial live image using the standard-x11 package list (basically just Xorg with drivers and the base system). At first things ran very well, blazing fast even on the oldest systems and could comfortably run Firefox along with LibreOffice side by side (I need LO as all of my colleagues use Word docs, often with track changes, which Abiword can't handle properly). However, over time, I've found that memory usage has risen, tot he point where Firefox is now automatically killed on the older systems every time I start LibreOffice.how does one figure out why memory usage is going up? I've checked for inessential services and turned them off with "insserv -r". I've used only lightweight apps, as mentioned before. Are there other general tips on reducing memory usage?

Ubuntu :: CPU Usage In System Monitor - Not Hardware

Nov 2, 2010

I had been running Folding@Home as a distinct process when I was running Windows - I'd manually start and stop it. (This was intentional.) I just installed it on my Ubuntu 10.04 install, and it's running just fine.

The only thing that's strange is that while top and the System Monitor report the CPU usage correctly, the Hardware Monitor applet (1.4.2) isn't reporting the usage at all.

As I said, it's an annoyance, nothing more - the applet reports other CPU usage accurately, and Folding@Home runs smoothly and perfectly.

Gnome's Hardware Monitor applet (1.4.2), the one with "curves" and "flames", apparently displays both "user" and "system" processes. Processes marked "nice" (that is, only running when the machine is idle) do not appear as CPU usage. They do appear as CPU usage in the System Monitor applet.
