If I am using SME server as a gateway/firewall/private server can I turn off Vista Firewall? At the moment there is only one computer hooked up. Soon there will be two. Main computer is running Vista, Absolute and Xubuntu, the other one when I hook it up will have XP and Xubuntu.

And same with firewall like ZoneAlarm and Comodo ?
Some people say you do not need a anti-virus program like Norton or Kaspersky or any firewall.Other people say you do and some say that Unix and Mac OSX have built in firewall.
And if on uses windows use ZoneAlarm or Comodo has it does alot more than windows firewall and router firewall. Note the admin saying the other thread was why windows get more malware and not very much the subject of the thread to post there.

View 2 Replies View Relatedi have recently started my masters degree program and i have to install fedora 11 for one of my courses. The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a single hard-drive on a spare computer and I decided to try out Ubuntu on recommendation from a friend. I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

I have squid as a proxy on the Suse box, and with the default firewall I have to enable masquerading to allow clients on the eth3:1-3 to send and receive mail through the Suse box. I found the Suse firewall completely inadequate (all P2P software/connections are allowed once you enable masquerading) and had to install ConfigServer Security & Firewall. In die configuration of csf I could get my way around getting smtp to work for the eth3:1-3 clients, but pop3 connections does not go through the box. I know I need to allow port 110 and 995 to masquerade of NAT (or something) and then the same for port 22
I tried installing F-prot's linux scanner but it doesn't seem to want to install and I am tired of messing with it.
So I am wondering if I even need it or if there is something else.
I am behind a firewall already with my router if that helps any.
I guess I am having trouble understanding why virus protection is less necessary.
Do people not write viruses for linux systems?
Is there a handy program that wipes my RAM at each shut down to prevent RAM attacks and recovering passphrases? Is this even possible? I have a truecrypt volume and have read that it is vulnerable to these RAM attacks.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThere is a server which was installed 3 days back. It got Cent OS 5.4 64 Bit with 4 GB RAM. Apache, MySQL, PHP and vsFTPd were installed using yum.Server was on the network and approx 100 visitors were on the website. All of sudden server got down. It stopping responding ping. Server guys told that server got down and after a request submission, they restarted server. However reason of the problem is still unknown. I logged in to shell via SSH and checked /var/log/messages file, but didn't find any record which indicate cause of system shutdown. However dates in this file aren't in chronological order.
Is there any way or log file to check for the exact reason, why system got down. One reason could be hardware fault (for that I am going to ask hosting company to run diagnostics). Other reason could be a software/os bug. Is there any tool / log file to check and diagnose the cause.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu running on an old PE server. It is running Virtualbox with an instance of Ubuntu inside. The instance is there to run my honeypot.
The server box IP is192.168.1.10. The Virtualbox is bridged with it's own IP of 192.168.1.200. The honeypot daemon is listening to 192.168.1.201 with arpd.
I set up the UFW with DENY. And then enabled only the ports leading to the honeypot scripts which are abound to IP .201. I then forwarded the ports necessary to run VNC to .200.
Here is the UFW status:

I believe i no longer have Vista. I had installed 10.04 side by side with Vista. Now that we have 10.10 i wanted to do a fresh installation on my laptop. I wanted to do the same thing, install it side by side so what i did is i installed gparted and tried to erase/delete ubuntu 10.04 and leave windows on it. From what i remember, i did just that. I restarted my laptop and windows didnt come up...i got a grub error...i decided then to install ubuntu 10.10. i selected to install ubuntu side by side again with vista. During the installation, i received an error about a partition...i made a few clicks...after it was installing and it went smoothly.
Now when i restart my laptop...it does not give me the option for windows....how do i know if i still have windows on my laptop? According to Gparted i dont have it anymore...

View 3 Replies View RelatedI could be wrong, but I swear that when I first considered switching to Linux a few years back the gnome windows manager's main menu had an option to exit said windows manager. There is obviously no such option now. Looking at some other forums, it seems that you can START gnome properly... but to exit the windows manager you have to kill processes? If I want to close down the Gnome WM without rebooting the computer - say, to just try TWM alone, or some other WM - there must be a 'legal' way to do it.

I have a VPS (Ubuntu 8.04 server eition) and as such am stuck with using a software firewall.
i currently have UFW installed.
I would ideally like to have my firewall be a little rude, or rather just not polite. I know what i am asking will break the RFC, but i consider this ok due to the security benefits.
I would like to have my firewall
1) ignore (eg drop without responding)all packets that dont start with a syn flag
2)for all other traffic that is currently blocked, have it dropped (again drop it without responding)
If there are any other rules you can think of i would like to know them. I already have only the services i want open and the rest blocked.
I've been using Windows for quite a few years now. I loved the way how I used to set incoming/outgoing rules for my applications. But I'm having hard time doing that in Ubuntu. I tried searching for a good GUI for iptables but I need your help selecting the best. I might learn iptables someday but for the time being I will be using a nice GUI. I'm currently using GUFW, I've tried Firestarter. All I need is a firewall that would allow me to configure rules for my applications.

I am trying to make this server as secure as posible so I enabled ufw. I allowed SSH and HTTP traffic in and denied everything else. But when I do that I can not use SSH -D because when I try to visit a webpage it does not load and I get the following.

What do I have to do to allow ufw to allow ssh tunnels through?
I am a Linux newbie so please bear with me if I sound stupid. I was checking out how to set up a firewall for my system and landed on this webpage: [URL]. But I am so confused with how this ufw application works. What I understand is that once I set it to "default deny" it prevents unauthorized incoming connection but what does it mean when the author says to add exceptions for services I need? When do I need to do that? Also what's an SSH server?

I will connect this lap to my providers modem with the on board port and connect my wlan router to the second port,on the pcmcia card,which shall serve as the second hop. I have read about smoothwall as os for my lap and it sounds good.But i would like to have a monitoring of each packet, whether in or out. So i will have to install an x ui. I prefer fvwm.2. Does anyone have such a paranoid setting?
