Debian :: The Server Will "freeze" On Occasion For No Known Reason?

For some reason, the server will "freeze" on occasion for no known reason. The processes keep running, but commands take a long time to complete. for example, I can open up two SSH windows. I can use the "top" command in one, and it will continue to show me the information, updating regularly. The memory and CPU useage both stay within acceptable norms. In the second SSH window, I can issue even simple commands like "ls" and it will freeze for about two minutes before completing the command. This is intermittent, but it's affecting the loading of websites on the server. It affects updates and upgrades, too.Everything freezes, but "top" just keeps happily running along.I'm suspecting a hard drive issue, although the hard drive checks clean when I check it.

Debian Hardware :: HP P410 Controller On Wheezy (server Freeze)

I have a very weird problem with a HP DL180 G6 server that uses this controller.

The server has 4 SSDs configured as separate logical devices (no hardware RAID). I can install Wheezy just fine (creating a software RAID1 from sda and sdb). I installed zfs on it and installed a Windows 2008 VM on kvm with the disk image stored on zfs. The entire server froze when Windows was installing updates.

I rebooted and everything worked again, this time I launched iostat -x 2 on a separate ssh session, here's whet I saw after the server froze again:

Thinking that zfs might be causing this, I destroyed the zpool, configured software raid on sdc and sdd, created a volume group and stored the image on a logical volume. The problem happened again.

I opened a ticket with the support of the company that provides the server and they updates the firmware of the controller. Now the server no longer froze while installing Windows updates, with lvm or zfs, so I went back to zfs.

Wanting to be sure, I launched iometer on the windows VM and set it to "4KB, 75% read 100% random" access pattern over 5GB of the Windows drive. The server froze after 7 hours.

I told the company that, and they replaced the SSDs with ones of a different model. I ran the test again and the server froze again, this time after 9 hours. I asked the company to replace the whole server. They did it (but kept the SSDs), I ran the test again and the server froze again, this time after 20 hours.

Now, this is starting to look like some kind of incompatibility between the HP controller and Debian rather than a problem with the controller. The settings are all default. It looks like the entire controller freezes because the system drives (sda, sdb) also show 100% busy despite not being under test from iometer.

Server :: WordPress Blogging Server Running Slow For What Reason?

I have a wordpress blogging server up and running and i've also got nagios monitoring the speed of webpage download etc.The thing is a couple of weeks ago nagios alerted me that the blog was returning pages really slow loading, when i went to the blog homepage for me also it was very slow. After about 30mins of http connections some finally loading and some not nagios stopped reporting issues, but thats not the end of the story, the graphing of speed i've got set-up on nagios shows quite clearly that ever since that big slow down the pages take avg of extra 2-3 seconds to load. However nothing drastic has changed and the datasize of the page hasn't really changed at all (also monitored).

During that weird period I carried out checks on the server itself like top, free -m, netstat (looking for maybe DOS attack number of connections), looked at mysql see if that was running slow and what processes it was running, checked on number of http processes see if they had ramped up, checked on php and web server errors see if they had increased some what as well. None of these things turned up anything noticeable to be causing such slow blog response.Now its still that average amount high and i'm lost at why this could be? Its niggling at me that something may have got in but i've taken several security steps to try and lock down the wordpress install etc.

Debian :: Can't Install New Kernel For Some Reason

i was compiling and installing the new linux kernel for my debian box, i ran the commands

# make oldconfig
# make clean
# make DEB_PKGVERSION=custom.3.0 deb-pkg
# cd ..
# dpkg -i *.deb

i tried to install the new kernel which was made into debian packages ready to be installed and after i ran that last command this is what came up

Security :: Diagnosing Reason Of Server Shut Down

There is a server which was installed 3 days back. It got Cent OS 5.4 64 Bit with 4 GB RAM. Apache, MySQL, PHP and vsFTPd were installed using yum.Server was on the network and approx 100 visitors were on the website. All of sudden server got down. It stopping responding ping. Server guys told that server got down and after a request submission, they restarted server. However reason of the problem is still unknown. I logged in to shell via SSH and checked /var/log/messages file, but didn't find any record which indicate cause of system shutdown. However dates in this file aren't in chronological order.

Is there any way or log file to check for the exact reason, why system got down. One reason could be hardware fault (for that I am going to ask hosting company to run diagnostics). Other reason could be a software/os bug. Is there any tool / log file to check and diagnose the cause.

Ive been searching half the internet for a solution for a strange problem im having with a server (CentOS 5.2 Final). For no apparent reason, the server will just be powered off.I've looked in the dmesg log and /var/log/messages file, but that doesnt show anything, except the "syslogd 1.4.1: restart." message after booting it up again, and hours in advance of the crash a "suhosin" alert message.

I experience X crashes on a frequent level. First it happened with the current stable nvidia 180 driver, and the nonfree flash player (....., vimeo, etc). I replaced the stable nvidia driver with the 180-dev driver which fixed the flash problem. However it still happens that the X chashes without any reason or pattern. One time it crashed the moment I wanted to save a PDF file to my HDD downloading it with Firefox, another time it crashed while idling. I use an Alienware M15x with a nvidia 260M. Compiz is installed and active. Which other data or logs do you need?

Debian :: Updating Grub And For Some Reason The System Hanged?

I was updating grub and for some reason the system hanged. Going to a tty did not solve any problems. At the end I had to do a hard reboot and came up with the following on the grub boot

While I'm going to try the later part, is there anything else I need to know about ?

Didn't have to do much, took the the Squeeze 6.10.a DVD, asked it to run into rescue mode and then did grub-install giving the MBR (hd0) as the place to be. Things worked nice after that.

Upon booting had to run
dpkg --configure -a

and it updated grub to 1.99-5 among other updates. Did not know that Squeeze had a rescue method as well (just like Ubuntu live CDs have). Now just have to wait for Debian to get Live CD/DVD as default

I use Sysv-rc-conf to turn on/off services. I initially turned off cups (I'm pretty sure it was on by default) using this method, but now I have turned it back on again, it won't start at boot. I have to start it manually each session. I've probably missed something but here goes anyway,

Sendmail isn't sending mail for some reason and keeping it in the Queue. I attemped to flush them but it deferres the connection to the server in which it is trying to relay the message to. I have checked to see if there is a DNS error or anything like that. I attemped to flush the messages through webmin.

I am not finding anything in the logs to let me know their is an error. I can ping the mail servers that it is trying to send to. Now it has started delaying when ping MX servers. So I knew something was starting to mess with it. I have checked the /etc/hosts. It is correct. The server isn't black listed. Mail to root just gives me.

I just want to see if anyone else is having problems connecting to networks, wifi or wired. For some reason, I can see both wired and wireless networks available but when I try to connect, it times out. I updated a couple of days ago and suddenly started having problems today. Anyone else having the same problem?I have only tried the router and repeater I have to connect to. My other computers are working just fine. I'm running several Ubuntu servers with LTSP thin clients in our classrooms. It's been a royal pain trying to get them to synchronize time properly.Currently I'm looking at 7 client's login screen and each one has different time. It's frustrating and I've done all the reading I could in regard to NTP and LTSP with time, etc.I'm trying to even set NTP to point to an external server, but my thin clients don't get that setting for some reason. They still pick whatever time they want to present to the end user. Once the user logs in, the time seems to be fine. It's just at the login screen.Since I'm no expert on NTP I figured I'd ask to see what users here thought.

EDIT - I was told that the GUI version of Ubuntu handles NTP at System-Administration-TimeAndDate. Is this true? I was told my /etc/ntp.conf file is empty because that file is only used in the server edition of Ubuntu.

Is there any way to get libmp3lame to work with ffmpeg without me having to completely recompile ffmpeg? I have debian squeeze server at work, acting as gateway, and home computer with debian sid (amd64). OpenVPN is working on server ecure connections from internet. So my home computer is connected to work server via openvpn almost 24/7. Some days ago i faced strange problem - when i make ssh session from home to work, via openvpn connection, i can login to work server, but after any command on remote console i have blank screen and nothing happening on it. Only exit is pressing Enter ~ . In server's auth log are messages about session opening and closing only.When i ssh to server from local network at workplace - via putty or native ssh - it works without any problems. I can do anything.But from home I can only login.

I'm experiencing some weird short freezing issues in Squeeze and / or unstable. Everything works as usual, then the system will freeze for some seconds if I don't do anything, or resume faster if I move the mouse or hit a key on the keyboard. I thought it was a wifi related problem, as I have an intel iwl4965 , here is what I often see in dmesg:

Debian :: Testing Version Going Into Freeze

I have been searching the forum regarding info about the debian testing going into freeze, but cannot find specific info regarding some of the facts. I understand that after some time the testing version (squeeze currently) goes into "freeze" before it becomes the new stable. Now, what does freeze actually mean? Currently I'm running Squeeze, and updating as the update software suggests, and since first install, I got a new kernel image, some updates to applications I use etc etc. So, when testing goes into freeze, all updates are stopped and only bugfixes are released, am I right? But I'm curious about one thing, for example I have gnome DE with let's say network manager applet 0.8.

So when testing is done with freeze and becomes the new stable - does it include current versions of kernel and programs that were actual during freeze? Will I have network manager applet 0.8 after freeze is gone to stable, or will it revert to... dunnno 0.7.6 version? At this time I have kernel version 2.6.32-5-686 , when I first installed it was 2.6.32-3-686 , so when going into freeze then stable kernel won't be downgraded, right? Btw I'm not using Sid's repositories. Well I least I think I'm not, the sources.list doesn't include sid's repos... Well sid non-free is there.

i'm running debian on a custom-built (no brand) box, which has been up and running for, maybe, 3-4 years with no issues whatsoever. all good parts... asus mbo, athlon, wd hd, etc. lately, every once in a while - like, say, every couple of days - i hear a "beep" from the box and the system freezes... lose the keyboard and mouse, and the display stays up but also freezes (for example, if a videos vid was playing, it would just freeze). have to physically reboot to get the system back. i assume this has nothing to do with the os or any app (although i'm usually browsing with chrome or ff when it happens). not being a hardware guy... can anybody clue me in as to how to figure out what's causing the problem?

Software :: Debian Freeze 2-3 Times A Day / Fix It?

Since I've installed Debian Squeeze, it freezes 2-3 times a day.
Usually the mouse pointer stops working and the screen remains unchanged, but sometimes it become white or distorted and the system halts.

Video is an older Ati 200m chipset (x300) with radeon driver and shared memory.
OS is Debian Squeeze x64

I've tried to modify xorg's settings. I've tried with and without KMS and compositing, different kernel, UXA/EXA/XAA acceleration, etc.
Maybe it was better with XAA, so the freezes reduced to an average of one per a day.

The version number of xserver-radeon-video-ati is 1:6.13.1-2-squeeze1.

The experimental repository has a little bit newer version of the radeon driver, but it depends on other xorg components, so it isn't simple to install and I don't know how to revert to testing/squeeze if I try to install it.
