OpenSUSE Install :: System Will Automatically Shut Down In 60 Seconds

Mar 31, 2010

If I click on the shutdown bottom (in my lower panel) I get an new window to choose if I really want to shut down or restart or suspend or hibernate. Under that alternatives there is an text that says: "[...] The system will automatically shut down in 60 seconds." Why is the text "60" not running down like a countdown? Can I set another (shorter) time for the automatic shutdown (10 seconds)? If so, where? Or shut I just make another bottom to shut down immediately?

I use (normally) OpenSuse/SUSE Linux
Release 11.1
Kernel Linux 2.6.27.45-0.1-pae
Gnome 2.24.1

Fedora X86/64bit :: Running F11 I586 On Laptop / System Shut Off (not A Normal OS Shut Down, But A Sudden Power Off Without Warning)?

Oct 13, 2009

Offlate I installed F11 i586 on my laptop. F11 shares the hard disk with Vista Home Premium 32-bit. The problem is that when running F11 (or even Ubuntu), my system shut off suddenly(not a normal OS shut down, but a sudden power off without any warning). This could have been a hardware trouble(heating) but it doesn't happen with Vista.
Machine specifications:
Maker: Toshiba
Model: Satellite L305D-S5881
AMD Turion X2 Dual Core Mobile Processor RM-70
3072 MB 800 MHz SDRAM
I don't want to open up my machine unnecessarily, if it isn't a hardware issue.
I am not sure how to verify the bit length of the machine and the OS and does it create a compatibility issue ?
Your advise would be highly appreciated.

Software :: Clean Way To Shut Down X Server

Apr 14, 2010

I like to end my X session in Arch on a regular basis. I always use'killall xinit'..This gives a lot of WARNING's and ERROR's. Among the messages are some lines about syntax errors in my config files, I think. But mostly it's about a "Fatal IO error" and gnome-settings-daemon not knowing what session it is in.Is there a gentler way to put X down? Or is this how it should be?I tried killing some of the processes that claim to be interrupted, before killing X, to no avail.

Ubuntu Servers :: Shut Off LCD On Laptop Server

Jul 20, 2010

I've just installed Ubuntu Server 10.04 on an old laptop. I would like the screen to automatically shut off after, say, a minute of inactivity.

- After some time, the monitor blanks but the backlight does not power down.

- I do not have a gui installed, and do not want to install one since this is a server. Most of the solutions I've found involve running X or KDE.

- It's an old laptop and the lid switch is broken, so closing the lid won't work.

Security :: Diagnosing Reason Of Server Shut Down

Apr 3, 2010

There is a server which was installed 3 days back. It got Cent OS 5.4 64 Bit with 4 GB RAM. Apache, MySQL, PHP and vsFTPd were installed using yum.Server was on the network and approx 100 visitors were on the website. All of sudden server got down. It stopping responding ping. Server guys told that server got down and after a request submission, they restarted server. However reason of the problem is still unknown. I logged in to shell via SSH and checked /var/log/messages file, but didn't find any record which indicate cause of system shutdown. However dates in this file aren't in chronological order.

Is there any way or log file to check for the exact reason, why system got down. One reason could be hardware fault (for that I am going to ask hosting company to run diagnostics). Other reason could be a software/os bug. Is there any tool / log file to check and diagnose the cause.

Ubuntu Servers :: Cannot Shut Down Remote Machine / Server?

Mar 21, 2010

I am running a local webserver mainly for development. I have everything set up. The issue I currently have is that I cannot shut down the machine from the command line. I can issue the command but the machine remains on. I also cannot get to the desktop via VNC.The reason for this, is that there is no monitor attached so Ubuntu says that it is trying to run in Low Graphics Mode. I found this out as I plugged the monitor in to my server. So question is, how do I get around this? How can I set up Ubuntu to get past this, or do I need to install Ubuntu Server?

Because I use DHCP, I can not hard code the ip addresses in the hosts file. How do I configure DNSMASQ so that i can use hostnames for computers who get their IP addresses from DHCP.

Server :: Fstab - NFS Share To Mount Automatically

Apr 13, 2011

On a production server, I want an NFS share to mount automatically. What is the best practice to use?

[Code]...

My understanding is that it is always best practice to use IP addresses in the fstab because the server will fail to mount the share upon booting if DNS is unavailable. I've also been told that if one MUST use names in the fstab, there should be a hosts file entry for it so that the server doesn't depend on DNS on boot.

Server :: Sendmail - Automatically Forwarding To Another Machine In LAN

Jan 26, 2010

How do I automatically forward mail to a different user on a different machine in my LAN? I have been beating my head for several hours trying to accomplish this. I have sendmail configured as an MTA solely to receive system mail from daemons. For my personal mail I just use KMail and POP. I want all mail on any system in my LAN to forward mail to my office system, where my normal account can receive the messages. Although my office machine is powered on the most often, the box is not available 24/7.

So any other system that can't immediately forward mail should keep that mail queued as long as necessary. I have no problem forwarding root's mail on each local machine to a local user account on that same machine. I have been able to forward the mails but not the way I want. The mails get forwarded to the local /var/mail/me location rather than into the remote office machine /var/mail/me. Adding another alias in the local /etc/mail/aliases has no effect.

Creating ~/.forward in the local user's home directory also has no effect. Both efforts always result in the mails being forwarded to the local location rather than remote. I can send user-to-user email to and from any machine on my LAN. There are no network problems between any machine. Basic forwarding does work, just not to a remote machine at a different account. I won't pretend to know much about mail systems, let alone sendmail.

Server :: Trying To Get Radius To Start After Reboot Automatically

Sep 30, 2010

I have installed FreeRadius to a Debian Linux server.I have configured an account called Support to run the Radius as I didn't want Root to be the user to run this.I want Radius to start up automatically after the system is rebooted but I don't know how to do this. I am new to Linux so please bare with me. If the system is rebooted, is it possible for the Support account to be logged in automatically? Is there a script I can create to automatically login the Support account? This may not be secure but it has been requested. Also the main question is after a reboot can the Radius be configured to automatically start without the need for someone to login? So if the system is rebooted and then goes back to login prompt, can the Radius then be running?

I have had a good search about scripts but with my limited knowledge it isn't too easy.

After reading it also said something about using rc.radiusd which will automatically start Radius after a reboot, but again I cannot understand exactly what I need to do.Please can someone help out with this and let me know if I am on the right track? Will the start-my-radius.sh script work after the system is rebooted without someone actually login and how do I get it to work? Please explain clearly as this is all a bit technical for my liking and not understanding it well!
