Ive been searching half the internet for a solution for a strange problem im having with a server (CentOS 5.2 Final). For no apparent reason, the server will just be powered off.I've looked in the dmesg log and /var/log/messages file, but that doesnt show anything, except the "syslogd 1.4.1: restart." message after booting it up again, and hours in advance of the crash a "suhosin" alert message.
View 9 RepliesI have just installed (after a series of crashes during the install) Fedora 15. I also have Ubuntu Natty installed and use it primarily but I wanted to reach out and try new distros.I've wanted to try Fedora and finally got enough nerve to try. Installing it crashed for no apparent reason several times.ehow it installed and booted right to Fedora.However, when finally figuring out how to run the updates, I began to have the same problem.(Someone elsewhere suggested trying to update through command line--which I did finally though I had a few crashes doing this).
Now I am logging in and then it will just inadvertently crash. I could be in firefox, or using terminal, etc. There doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to why this is happening and I feel frustrated. I really want to test out Fedora (it looks so nice!) but can't manage to stay afloat more than a few minutes. I might also mention that this does not happen in Ubuntu at all so I can't account for the issues. I have much to learn but I feel a bit intimidated by Fedora because it's so new to me.
I was struggling frantically this morning for about 5 minutes after I booted up my computer, and wondering why it couldn't connect to the internet. After I figured out that the automatic wired network "Auto eth0" was gone from the network manager, it was easy to manually add it back. But why did it disappear in the first place?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI woke up this morning to a message saying I have low disk space in /home. My /home partition is 150 GB, but I had only 4 kB left. I promptly rebooted, which helped, but I still only have 40 GB available. Now, I use only 26 GB, so where the rest is, I don't know. In the disk usage analyzer, a lot of the space was not accounted for, as shown in the image.

I've been an Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit user for one year. My Ubuntu distro is installed on an ext2 file system. Occasionally, I experience disk checks during boot without any system freeze or power loss.Sometimes, once reboot, the system works fine but Evolution Mail requests a new account, as if it was used for the very first time.Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
View 1 Replies View RelatedNetwork stopped working about a month ago. I installed ubuntu again, and network worked fine, and I turned off updates to keep things stable. Now network stopped working again. No changes had been made to it.I put in the ubuntu install cd, and network works fine off of it. I did not reinstall again. ifconfig shows eth0 with correct ip address, but 0 RX/TX packets.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just want to see if anyone else is having problems connecting to networks, wifi or wired. For some reason, I can see both wired and wireless networks available but when I try to connect, it times out. I updated a couple of days ago and suddenly started having problems today. Anyone else having the same problem?I have only tried the router and repeater I have to connect to. My other computers are working just fine. One is actually running as a Debian server with no GUI (which I do not update as often). The other is a Mac.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI experience X crashes on a frequent level. First it happened with the current stable nvidia 180 driver, and the nonfree flash player (....., vimeo, etc). I replaced the stable nvidia driver with the 180-dev driver which fixed the flash problem. However it still happens that the X chashes without any reason or pattern. One time it crashed the moment I wanted to save a PDF file to my HDD downloading it with Firefox, another time it crashed while idling. I use an Alienware M15x with a nvidia 260M. Compiz is installed and active. Which other data or logs do you need?

View 2 Replies View RelatedTitle says it all.Ubuntu 9.10 on HP Pavilion dv4 laptop crashes all the time absolutely for no reason.
Everything is working very fine and suddenly bang ubuntu drops to black screen and cursor blinking on top right corner requiring a reboot to get it back to normal and again happens the same at any random time.
Having VLC crash upon opening? I would think that they would have it fixed by now & just trying to follow up. I tried to do a bug report but couldn't get it to go for whatever reason (at least I don't THINK it took).
View 12 Replies View Relatedon my Netbook i run Opensuse 11.4, it works fine until a couple Days. Since there more and more Apps wont start anymore. For example Dolphin, Yast, Ocular and so on... so better say´d, only Thunderbird and Firefox still running. I dont get any Error Messages or something like this, when i start a Application there just pop´s the Program Bar in the Start Menu and then after that (normally the Window of the Program would be shown) it just disappears. Dumb on that is, that i even cant backup my Data, because Dolphin dont show up anymore.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy tomboy always ran very fluently until one day I tried the tomboy-image patch. When I tried to resize a big image in my note, tomboy crashed. This was the first time I experienced tomboy crashed. I felt bothered. As a result, I removed the tomboy-image. Later on, sometimes I clicked on a link to another note or when I clicked on a note and then tomboy crashed. It is not very often but bothered me a lot. Especially after I kill the process, I can't reopen it right away. I have to wait a while. I don't know if it relates to the installation of tomboy-image or not? Since I already remove it, how can it still in effect? Or tomboy normally acts not that fluent when the amount of notes become larger? (I have 6xx notes so far).

Software center, update manager, Synaptic package manager crashes for no reason. I have not done any recent changes or downloads. I'm running a fresh install of ubuntu 11.04

My X crashes when I...
1) ssh to a remote centos server using X11 forwarding
2) open the virt-manager remote application (the virtualization management app)
3) Open the remote console
Just to be clear, my local X11 crashes. I get back to the log in screen.

I am using Centos 5.3, and when I try to copy a batch of files, it just slows down and stops, the files are not that big, few megs. first I realized it when I used secure ftp, I thought maybe my internet is slow, but now it does even from an external USB drive,.
I use Krusader for copying.
When I reboot my laptop compaq nc4400, HAL daemon fails to start.

The server was working fine since November �09 until a month or 2 ago.Sometimes (almost daily now) the machine hangs and shows the front "health led" blinking red.The services do not respond,locally i can see the login screen but when attempt to logon it freezes (the same happens with ssh).2 weeks ago i open a case in HP and the support sugest that the problem is in the X server (??), since then the system starts in runlevel 3 but the problem continues. A week ago open another case, on Tuesday make a BIOS upgrade but today in the morning the server hangs again.
There�s no strange messages in log files but... after the Tuesday hungs (before the upgrade) i can see the error msg below (thanks to the change to console mode):

I have a wordpress blogging server up and running and i've also got nagios monitoring the speed of webpage download etc.The thing is a couple of weeks ago nagios alerted me that the blog was returning pages really slow loading, when i went to the blog homepage for me also it was very slow. After about 30mins of http connections some finally loading and some not nagios stopped reporting issues, but thats not the end of the story, the graphing of speed i've got set-up on nagios shows quite clearly that ever since that big slow down the pages take avg of extra 2-3 seconds to load. However nothing drastic has changed and the datasize of the page hasn't really changed at all (also monitored).
During that weird period I carried out checks on the server itself like top, free -m, netstat (looking for maybe DOS attack number of connections), looked at mysql see if that was running slow and what processes it was running, checked on number of http processes see if they had ramped up, checked on php and web server errors see if they had increased some what as well. None of these things turned up anything noticeable to be causing such slow blog response.Now its still that average amount high and i'm lost at why this could be? Its niggling at me that something may have got in but i've taken several security steps to try and lock down the wordpress install etc.
we have 22 servers Dell (20 Poweredge R210 + 2 Poweredge R310) with CentOS 5.5 x86_64 (kernel 2.6.18-194.26.1.el5). Half of these are on different rack. During the day, some server reboot without any reason and the messages log file had no evidence of what happened.

Is it possible that 20% (circa) of 60 memory bank are broken? By the way, memory bank have Lifetime warranty from Kingston. If I reboot again the server affected by this error, the error disappear from messages log file and from OpenManage Web interface.
Is it possible that is a CentOS bug? I had search some relative bugs on Bugzilla but without any results.

View 9 Replies View RelatedThere is a server which was installed 3 days back. It got Cent OS 5.4 64 Bit with 4 GB RAM. Apache, MySQL, PHP and vsFTPd were installed using yum.Server was on the network and approx 100 visitors were on the website. All of sudden server got down. It stopping responding ping. Server guys told that server got down and after a request submission, they restarted server. However reason of the problem is still unknown. I logged in to shell via SSH and checked /var/log/messages file, but didn't find any record which indicate cause of system shutdown. However dates in this file aren't in chronological order.
Is there any way or log file to check for the exact reason, why system got down. One reason could be hardware fault (for that I am going to ask hosting company to run diagnostics). Other reason could be a software/os bug. Is there any tool / log file to check and diagnose the cause.
I have high load average on the servers with no identified reason (From my point of view)
View 2 Replies View RelatedI replaced an old server (Fedora 3) with a new machine running CentOS 5.4. Unfortunately, I'm having some problems with "named".
Once in a while the "named" daemon crashes so hard, that I can't even restart it using
/etc/init.d/named restart
because the console freezes at "Shutting down named ...". I already waited for about 20 mins, but nothing happened. I cancelled the process using CTRL+C and typed "reboot" to restart the machine. After rebooting the "named" service works fine, but sooner or later it crashes again.
I also don't think it's a config problem, because I applied the "named.conf" from the former server where the whole "named" service worked fine and never crashed before. I'm a little confused, I also googled a lot nad could not find anything that exactly matches my problem. Is this a known problem?
Sendmail isn't sending mail for some reason and keeping it in the Queue. I attemped to flush them but it deferres the connection to the server in which it is trying to relay the message to. I have checked to see if there is a DNS error or anything like that. I attemped to flush the messages through webmin.

I am not finding anything in the logs to let me know their is an error. I can ping the mail servers that it is trying to send to. Now it has started delaying when ping MX servers. So I knew something was starting to mess with it. I have checked the /etc/hosts. It is correct. The server isn't black listed. Mail to root just gives me.

I'm running several Ubuntu servers with LTSP thin clients in our classrooms. It's been a royal pain trying to get them to synchronize time properly.Currently I'm looking at 7 client's login screen and each one has different time. It's frustrating and I've done all the reading I could in regard to NTP and LTSP with time, etc.I'm trying to even set NTP to point to an external server, but my thin clients don't get that setting for some reason. They still pick whatever time they want to present to the end user. Once the user logs in, the time seems to be fine. It's just at the login screen.Since I'm no expert on NTP I figured I'd ask to see what users here thought.
EDIT - I was told that the GUI version of Ubuntu handles NTP at System-Administration-TimeAndDate. Is this true? I was told my /etc/ntp.conf file is empty because that file is only used in the server edition of Ubuntu.
I am using CentOS 5 with a couple extra repos; KDE, RPMforge, adobe and a repo provided by Mike A. Harris which has very new Firefox(3.6.3) and other packages. Understandably I am using an, at press time, unsupported version of Firefox. (I use updated packages at Adobe, KDE, and of Firefox for bleeding edge media support and website testing)
Most sites are working fine, including all sites that I have tried at the www.centos.org domain. Wikipedia, Pandora, AOL Mail, Dell, Facebook, Hulu, Google, Linksys, all of the other sites I have built and many more seem to work fine. When directing Firefox to anything on the CentOS wiki X seems to crash (the screen goes blank for a second, it flashes a Console login such as found at ctrl+alt+F1 and the gives me the X login screen) running services are un-interrupted, but all GUI programs close (Firefox and OpenOffice do recover data). I was running yum from a console and it was not interrupted.
Has anyone else had this issue with a newer version of Firefox? Again it is only seeming to affect the CentOS wiki. Not a worry since I only use the wiki for reference configuring my machine, and Konqueror browses it just fine. Anything I should do to help developers and other users? Bug reports? Ideas on how to fix it?
