Ubuntu Servers :: Cannot Shut Down Remote Machine / Server?

Mar 21, 2010

I am running a local webserver mainly for development. I have everything set up. The issue I currently have is that I cannot shut down the machine from the command line. I can issue the command but the machine remains on. I also cannot get to the desktop via VNC.The reason for this, is that there is no monitor attached so Ubuntu says that it is trying to run in Low Graphics Mode. I found this out as I plugged the monitor in to my server. So question is, how do I get around this? How can I set up Ubuntu to get past this, or do I need to install Ubuntu Server?

Ubuntu Servers :: Add A Printer On Remote Windows Machine?

Sep 12, 2010

I set up a print server with a USB printer attached. I can remotely bring up CUPS and print a test page, but I would like to be able to add a printer in windows like I normally would. Add printer, network work printer and so on, but I am not sure how to implement this on Ubuntu server. Do I need to use IPP or do I have to share it out using Samba? Oh, my server does not have a graphical desktop, it is strictly console based.

Ubuntu Servers :: Shut Off LCD On Laptop Server

Jul 20, 2010

I've just installed Ubuntu Server 10.04 on an old laptop. I would like the screen to automatically shut off after, say, a minute of inactivity.

- After some time, the monitor blanks but the backlight does not power down.

- I do not have a gui installed, and do not want to install one since this is a server. Most of the solutions I've found involve running X or KDE.

- It's an old laptop and the lid switch is broken, so closing the lid won't work.

Ubuntu Servers :: Remote Desktop To Manage File Downloads From Windows 7 Machine(s) Big List?

Feb 17, 2010

I've got an old p3 with 11 ide hard drives strapped to it for storage and I decided to throw Ubuntu server on it because it's more lightweight than a standard ubuntu install, and given it's a pentium 3 with 128mb of ram, lightweight is good. I installed, through putty (ssh), the gnome gui - then learned that putty only does cli (i was thrilled), so I've spend the last hour trying to figure out how to enable remote desktop.

I don't mind reinstalling to do what is necessary. remote desktop to manage file downloads from my windows 7 machine(s) big list, i know. history: this thing is/was my media server. I had xp on it, sharing all drives and watching hd movies off it, but then xp decided it did't want to boot anymore so here we are. I'm thinking of just putting ubuntu 8.04/8.10 on it and through its wonderful gui enabling remote desktop and using realvnc/tightvnc to access it

Ubuntu Servers :: FTP From Server To Remote File Server?

Jul 6, 2010

I support a small business which runs a headless Ubuntu Server (10.04 32bit) as a file server which is accessed by Windows machines.Although the company has it's own back-up procedure they have decided to back-up some (none sensitive) files online. The have chosen FileFactory (http://www.filefactory.com/) as the host for this. FileFactory allows files to be uploaded to their server by FTP however I do not know how to set this up on the server.

The idea, if it is possible, is to connect to FileFactory through FTP and then synchronise the data using an Rsync command.I normally access the server through Webmin and it has vsFTP installed. I can access the company's server by FTP from inside and outside of the network so I know that vsFTP is working for incomming connections however I cannot work out how to configure it to connect to the FileFactory server.

General :: Script To Shut Down The Virtual Machine?

Sep 2, 2010

I have installed the guest OS on the redhat 5 with XEN. I found the guest OS can be started on host boot UP, but it cannot be shutdown on host shutdown. so,I need to creat the script to shut down the virtual machine

The script as following:
# Get the VM list
VMLIST=`xm list`
for VM in $VMLIST
do
xm shutdown $VM
# delay a bit the next sequence
sleep 3
done

run the script, the virtual machine can be shutdown, bu at the same time the error info will appear:
Error: Domain 'Name' does not exist.

[Code]...

So,all the strings in the line of the output regard as the Name of VM The script will run the command like "xm shutdown Time(s)" ,"xm shutdown State",and so on. How Can I get the guest OS name in the output of "xm list" I just nend to get the virtual machine name, the script to run the command "xm shutdown windows2003" and "xm shutdown windowsXP" how to find the strings "windows2003" and "windowsXP" when input the command "xm list"

Ubuntu Servers :: Tunnel To Remote NFS Server?

Jan 11, 2011

Does anyone know the best and simplest way to do this? I'd like the share to be mounted over the tunnel on boot with as little scripting as possible and be as secure as possible without exposing more than one port to the outside. I will be trying this method: [URL]... once the tunnel is established and 'always on' NFS would take care of the file system mount obviously. Lots of the information I have been reading is not up to date it seems. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Ubuntu Servers :: Remote GUI Server/Client With Sound

Sep 28, 2010

I am looking for a client/server application that can allow me to have remote GUI access (eg: VNC) but with the ability to use sound.

I see that TeamViewer has a linux application out now but for my company, it would compromise security protocol because it reaches out to the TeamViewer servers to do any work.

Basically, we have applications that require a GUI and we need to hear sounds from them if they throw an alert (the app is a monitoring tool).

We are running a VNC server on it currently and when our monitoring machine was on Windows, TightVNC was able to get the sound...that is not the case with any Linux client so I am wondering if there is actually one that exists.

Ubuntu Servers :: Php Only Works On Server Machine?

Feb 22, 2010

I'm trying to setup a server at home so i can work in a LAMP based web app from a Windows 7 laptop. I downloaded Ubuntu Server 9.10 and installed it on one of my desktop PCs. I also installed phpmyadmin and everything seemed fine (tested with lynx) I started noticing the problem when I tried to connect from the laptop to the server in the same LAN. when i tried to access [URL] the browser kept loading forever and nothing appeared. The default [URL] it works" page display just fine I then created a testing.php file containing just <?php phpinfo() ?> in the /var/www directory and it works on the server, but from the laptop it displays the same hanging behaviour, any php code doesnt seem to be properly executed when apache serves other machines.Im guessing its some sort of php configuration causing this, and it might be obvious for ppl with more experience with server setups, but i've never setup a server before and Im having a hard time solving this.

Ubuntu Servers :: Remote Backup Ftp Server With Confidential Data?

Feb 15, 2011

I already have an ubuntu backup server in my location and need this one server to be backed up remotely in another state. this other location is a helpdesk so there's a danger that they can gain access to confidential data. I'll be setting up this new server as an ftp server but need to set the ftp folder to only allow access to the backup server and me. Because its remote on the helpdesk side, they'll need some access to the file system but need to be completely blocked off from the ftp folder where all the data is at. How can I make sure I can keep them away from my data and still be able to retrieve or copy files over without permission issues between both servers?

Ubuntu Servers :: Freezing When Running A Script On A Remote Server

Mar 1, 2011

I discovered in running a script on a remote server. Take this little demonstration script:

[Code]...

This runs as expected (it does nothing) on both my local desktop and the remote server. However if I log in via ssh to the remote server and run this script everything on the server freezes. I do mean everything ftp/ssh/nfs/login-requests/... even if I go and physically plug in monitor and keyboard there is no response. It basically needs a full restart to clear. I have repeated this several times. Now something is clearly wrong here but does anyone know what. I didn't think a non-admin user should be able to actually lock up system processes.
