It is playing at a very low volume and when i try to open sound preferences then i am introduced to a dialog box which shows the message as follows "Waiting for sound system to respond.". After this the dialog box closes without showing any preferences options. Now how can i make my sound drivers as they were before ? ..

It seems to be related to some kind of gcc library missing, but I went into YAST and I've installed the kernel sources, headers, devel, and a bunch of other things I found in various forums. I consistently get an error message about GLIBC_2.11 not found, even if I just do gcc -v. Contents of config.log:

We have a 32-bit SLES build server and we compile our 32-bit application on top of it. Our target is 32-bit SLES.Now want to change our target to 64-bit SLSE and keep the application 32-bit, do we need change the build server to 64-bit and recompile the application with some flags? OR can we use the 32-bit binaries compiled on 32-bit SLES build server? We use g++ compiler. It would be great if any Linux Guru can give me the steps to be followed.

Although, I have downloaded, compiled and installed linux drivers from realtek website it did not fix the problem. internet which is simply deleting .pulse folder and restarting it didnt work either. At the moment I am using terminal alsamixer for controlling sound level but even the maximum attainable volume is too low.

I haveing a big problem atm (just after to upgrade to 10.04). I have a simply and easy script that sent a halt command to every KVM virtual machine actually running into the server. this script is/and was) palced as a init-rc script in rc0/rc1 and rc6 lvls. Just after to upgrade, I have noticed that this script is executed but the system ignore the time that it require to finish (giving time to correctly stop a single virtual machine). Aftert 5 second it start sending SIG-TERM and SIGN-KILL to any currect process and then reboot/halt.
I have just done a new script using upstart and I got just the same result. What is happending? why is the waiting the init secuence for a valid/or_not termination of any init script. I am so sorry for this crap english I have never study this language so I try to do my best anytime I speak it (or try ti..).

I was trying to install ubuntu 9.10 as a dual boot system with windows and I recieved this error message: The Grub package failed to install into /target/. Without the Grub boot loader, the installed system will not boot
This Error comes up after 94% of the install. I also cannot seem to get the side by side install option to work (sometimes this option appears sometimes it does not) I am not sure but I beleive seome of the install files have been placed on the hard drive because I only get the option now to install on the hard drive and totally wipe clean or the emptiest hard drive. So how would I get the possible Ubuntu install off the Hard drive. I have used this CD to Install before it has no scratches therefore should work. Also If I have Win Xp on a Raid 0 will the Ubuntu 9.10 install ?

Is there any way to set up my system so that, just before I run out of RAM, and SWAP is utilized, I can get a warning message so that I can kill the memory hog before my computer slows to a crawl?I'm a programmer, and it's happened a few times that my programs have memory leaks and run over into SWAP and effectively freeze my system.

Sometimes when I try to open some chat application i get a strange warning message asking for password. The message is that /usr/libexec/mission-control is trying to gain access of the system, please provide the password. On top of the message box it shows "Unlock Keyring".
This very weird, as I am also unable to do a print-screen when this message box is up.
what this message is all about and what does the executable /usr/libexec/mission-control do?
I am using Empathy as my chat application

Why is it when I run gedit, there are always tonnes of error or warning messages? (Even though my gedit ran successfully)
To name a few:
1. GConf error: failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you ned to enable TCP/IP networking for 0 RBit, or you have stale NFS lockes due to a system crash.
2. Failed to get connection to session: Did not receive a reply among others.
Just to mention again my gedit is running fine though. Is there any configuration that I missed out? or I can disable to avoid these nuisance?

I have been running to a strange problem. For a few days, a few times a day something seems to take over my machine. Suddenly I can't type, or the key shows up about 5 seconds are being pressed, music players halt, etc. In anticipation, I had top and htop running. Sure enough, when this business begins htop reports all 8 cores firing at near 100% for a few minutes. However, top is telling me nothing about who is too blame. The cup%sy on top shows heavy usage, but the top processes are nothing remarkable, mostly just top and htop and conky, all running at around 1 or 2% on average. I am a bit puzzled as to why I can't see the cpu hog so that I figure out what is going on. My question then: Are there some processes (in kernel space?) that don't show up in top, yet which could be hogging the cpu?
