I can call this routine and it works fine when I enter a valid name for $PROJ. If I enter an invalid name it goes to the else block and prints the statement. However, it does not call itself. Instead the script just exits.I've googled 'perl recursive subroutines' and the example don't appear to be doing anything different.

Nov 5, 2010i am trying to do something very simple like a header and a footer for my first perl programs, what iam trying to do is that when i create a file in vim: lets say hello.pl , i would like that file to have already this in its header:

and this on the footer:

so that i dont have to type everytime #!/usr etc i tried to do it this way but i get weird vim errors: header is a file that contains the header and footer $ vim hello.pl;header > is there another way to do it as a function in bash or some other one liner command?

Mar 10, 2010I have this daemon I'm writing in Python, but I still a Python n00b. I've coded the part of the daemon that does the work, but not the part that receives messages. I need a simple system so that other processes on the same (Linux) computer can occasionally send text-string messages to the daemon (without needing to stay running all the time themselves). Once in the past we did something similar by (mis)using pyliblo to listen for OSC messages coming in on a certain port. That option isn't as workable here because the pyliblo interface (as near as I can tell) requires you to know in advance specifically what messages you are expecting, and forward them to specified functions, rather than just allowing you to generically process incoming messages as you see fit.

Dec 28, 2010Why is it when I run gedit, there are always tonnes of error or warning messages? (Even though my gedit ran successfully)
To name a few:
1. GConf error: failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you ned to enable TCP/IP networking for 0 RBit, or you have stale NFS lockes due to a system crash.
2. Failed to get connection to session: Did not receive a reply among others.
Just to mention again my gedit is running fine though. Is there any configuration that I missed out? or I can disable to avoid these nuisance?

Aug 8, 2010I've been trying to get the ol' hello world script to run in a browser. From the hours of reading of various pages about this, I cant work out Basically I get nothing at all displayed.
the perl (test.pl):

The output: Nothing. no error message either in the browser window or in the servers error log. If I change the path or the file name I get "invalid CGI ref" in the Cpanel error log.
I did get this to work for a brief time, then changed the Perl script and it stopped working. So I went back to hello world and havn't seen it work since. What is going on?

Programming :: Perl: Determine Error Origin / Meaning In Code Call
Jan 20, 2010I've been requested to modify a perl backup script we use which mounts a networked NAS machine. The actual mount command is called inside a system() command. In testing, I can do a test of the return value, so I'm able to tell whether or not I've mounted properly, but I can't make heads or tails out of the return on deliberate errors. (Such as mounting a non-existent box.) I'm displaying the returned value, which is 256 in my tests. The man page for mount listed error messages with values from 1 to 64, but no higher. Am I drawing this error value from the system command somehow? And what would be the best way to determine what this error means?

Feb 4, 2010I've installed openMPI-1.4.1 on my laptop and I'm trying to compile some fortran code I've written using MPI. I downloaded the openMPI-1.4.1 file from the openMPI website and used the shell script they provide to install it. This is the shell script:

shell$ ./configure --prefix=/usr/local
shell$ make all install
There was an additional line extracting the tar file, but I did this by hand. The first time I ran this script there was an error on the final stage saying that a directory couldn't be created because of lack of permission. I decided to run the script again this time as a sudo.
Having run the script again everything appeared to install properly, however when I went to compile some fairly simple code I got a message saying that the compiler couldn't find MPI. I was using this command: gfortran messages.f90 -o messages I looked on the openMPI website where it recommends compiling with a compiler called mpif. However when I type mpif messages.f90 -o messages I get an error message saying mpif isn't a recognized command......

This always results in an "Could not open /u00/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/rdbms/dbs for reading: No such file or directory" (that directory is the one ending with the $spfile_dir variable) message, although that directory exists and the executing user has writing rights on it.
The same behaviour if I create the directory array like this:

The problem does not occur when one of the directories is the only element in the array though. Of course I could copy and paste that part of the script for the second directory, but I don't like that workaround.
