Ubuntu :: Unity Alternatives - Can't Use Alt-Tab To Switch To Apps As VirtualBox Captures The Keys For Windows
May 3, 2011
When working in an XP VirtualBox I can't use Alt-Tab to switch to my Linux Apps as VirtualBox captures the keys for Windows. So I tended to make a lot of use on the Application list on the old System Tray/Taskbar. I could click on the application's entry in the taskbar and that application would come up. When I needed to return to the Windows App, I clicked again and the application would then minimise so I can see the Windows app. Also I have been using the SUPER button in conjunction with 'E' to raise the Home Directory (just to keep it consistent with Windows).

I recently installed Ubuntu desktop, since I had been running my server as Ubuntu Server on a guest OS on Windows 7 and never really used the Windows part of the computer. Since then, I've been unable to use the mouse in a graphical environment for longer than a few minutes without it starting to act crazy. The mouse moves around normally, but won't respond to clicks (left, middle, or right) but the keyboard shortcuts still work. I'm not sure if things have changed since I last used Gnome though, but Alt+Tab is not working for me either when this happens. Sometimes, the active window is even behind another window, and isn't pulled to the foreground.
After a bit of frustrated clicking and jamming of buttons on the keyboard, sometimes the mouse kind of starts working because I'll notice a right click menu open. But, I am still unable to move windows or click on them to bring them to the foreground, and my mouse presses only work on the current window. And then, eventually, after about a minute or so, it'll stop respond again too.
I saw in one thread that someone had dead spaces where he couldn't click, so he installed and ran Gnome and that fixed it, but I tried using Ubuntu Classic and it is still giving me the same behavior. I'm actually posting this message now in links, because I can't use Firefox or Chrome well enough when it's hidden behind other windows.

Much as I enjoy having openjdk available, some things just don't work with it. So for those things, I need to use the sun version of java. I currently have openjdk installed from F11 yum. I'd like to install the sun java rpm and be able to tell the alternatives(8) system to switch between the two as I need to. How to configure alternatives(8) to do that?

I'll come out and say I actually quite like unity, but it still needs a whole load of development. So I'm just wondering if anyone else knows how or why you can't bind Compiz keyboard shortcuts wile running unity. I'm trying to bind a shortcut (any) to Initiate a Window Picker for Window Group. If Unity is moving toward the Mac way of treating groups of windows that belong to the same program as an application it needs to have more options to manage those windows, being able to at least expose those windows would be a start. However I cant seem to put a keyboard binding for this function. I've tried <super>+<shift>+W and on a hunch that it was unity's Super that was messing it up <control>+<alt>+ and <super>+ and <alt>+W and <alt>+<shift>+W.

I've tried setting short cut keys to switch workspaces with no luck. I've tried a couple of different combination of keys and none have worked. The workspace switcher works but it's sometimes a bit anoying to reach for the mouse and a lot easier to just kit a couple of keys.

Loading up gedit (as an example) I am unable to navigate reliably using keyboard navigation controls with the new Unity interface. There are times when left/right will work within a document but up/down will not. After a reboot left/top/right will work but down will not unless you physically click on the position you would like the cursor. I'm guessing unity unity is stealing these keys but not releasing them back to the applications?

Using more than one instance of the same app is a real pita in Unity. If I have 3 (or more) pdf documents open in evince then there isn't a way to shift from one to the other using the mouse. Previously I had the windows on the taskbar and could click on the one I wanted. In Unity clicking on the evince icon on the launcher just brings ALL the instances of evince to the top - I still then have to shuffle the windows around to get the one I want.I've been trying to get used to Unity over the last few days, so maybe I am just doing it wrong, but if not then maybe I should file a bug report?

I just installed 11.04 32 bit (downloaded today) in Virtualbox (4.0.6), with host 64 bit Win7. I'm trying to get Unity working. I've searched and found references to the fact that the Host graphics card must support 3D, which I believe mine does (nVidia GeForce 7900 GTX). Also found some references to try the following:
After the OS install, I did this:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose-guest-utils
Then rebooted and did this:
killall -9 gnome-settings-daemon && gnome-settings-daemon
I also installed the latest Guest Additions. In the VM settings I have the "3D" tick checked, and have 32M RAM allocated to video. But no Unity shows up, just normal desktop.
Any ideas?

I'm currently running Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity. I have a recurring and irritating problem- sometimes when I switch windows using alt+tab, normally when the window that I have switched to is maximised, the window does not get re-painted until it has been resized. The window doesn't "freeze" as such as it still responds to keyboard and mouse events, but it doesn't appear to respond until it is resized.

Having just upgraded to 10.10, I've discovered Unity, and I'm afraid its not for me. I absolutely loved the previous interface, and was quite shocked and saddened to see it disappear. But I'd like to keep all the other new software that comes with 10.10. So my question is, can I install the old 10.04 beautiful interface to run on the 10.10 edition? Re-installation is a MS solution, that turned me on to linux in the first place!

Is there any way I can switch my desktop shell from unity to, say, gnome-shell? I can switch using other console shell I like (bash, csh, fish, etc.). Assume that there is a stable alternative desktop shell, I should be able to choose, too.
(For console shell, we goes to /etc/passwd. But for desktop, I can't find the way to config.)

Background: I'm a 20+ year Mac user, switched four years ago to Linux.I have NO experience with Windows to speak of. Whenever I've gotten a new box, it's either been home-built or a Mac.Now I have a new Acer Aspire AS7551 laptop, and although I have not yet booted into Windows, it comes with a Windows 7 Home Premium license. I've been running it with Ubuntu 10.04 off a flash drive and everything works perfectly.
What I want to do: I want to wipe the disk, install Lucid, and run Windows in Virtualbox (for the sole purpose of watching some Netflix and learning a little bit about Windows 7). For the purpose of this question, please accept that I DO NOT want to dual boot. The problem: From what I can find, I can't use the "recovery discs" that came with my laptop to create a virtual machine. This is confusing, because it seems like I paid for a legitimate Windows license for use with this laptop.
Questions:
1. Would MS exchange my recovery discs for a regular install disc to go with my license code if I explained this to them?
2. If not, is there a source for Windows ISOs that I can safely use with my license? (I am aware that the legitimacy of that approach is questionable, but I am quite comfortable with the ethics since I paid for Windows 7, own the license, and only want to use it on the same computer.
3.If not,is there any way in heck I can use my recovery disc to create something Virtualbox can work with?
4. If not, how are all of you people getting your Windows virtual machines going??
(I have read that Acer is a major hassle to get a refund from for the "Windows tax" so I might as well be able to use it--this is MS' chance to win over a fan if only they will let me!)

I've run into a sort of catch 22.I installed wireshark via apt-get on my Eee 1008HA, but when it is launched, it does not allow any capture interfaces. I think this is because the shortcut created in my applications paneldoes not start it as root.So I went into terminal, typed in "sudo wireshark" and it popped up, as root. I was then able to capture on my wireless interface. However, if I try and specify my home folder as the location for the capture to be saved, I get an error that permission was denied, which seems odd since the process is running as root and should be able to do pretty much whatever it wants. How can I get wireshark set up so I can both capture _and_ save the .pcap files I generate? I'm running karmic koala, the full output of uname -a is: Linux ruckus-laptop 2.6.31-14-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 16 14:04:26 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux.

I need to use bluetooth, but for some yet unknown reason I don't seem to be able to switch on the bluetooth-card (it should be as simple as to press the Fn+F6 buttons on the keyboard to switch it on though and then the bluetooth indicator should light up, which is not happening, but I don't know if this is because of (X)ubuntu) and Ubuntu says it can't find the bluetooth card. That's not what I wanted to discuss now, but I think some history is always welcome when trying to do fault-finding I thought I maybe might be able to do it from Win7 . So after months of not having booted Win7 I thought to give it a try, but I get stuck right after the grub boot-screen. All I get is a blinking cursor for minutes and there's no HD activity. Then I booted Xubuntu again and it needed to do some check, which I passed and Xubuntu started as normal. This check was done by "Keys". I don't really know what this Keys is, but since a couple of days I always get this word below the word Xubuntu in the boot-splash-screen. This is only after I installed WinFF or DVD::RIP. There was some error during install telling me that it needed something with 'keys', so I entered the command quoted, something was installed and then the rest of the installation went okay. I've been looking in the bash_history files (user and root) but I can't find the command which I entered to install this keys-thing anymore, which is of course strange on itself.
Now I've got the idea (I'm not sure though) that I can't boot Windows because of this keys thing, but I have no clue how to get rid of it. Or could there be other problems causing Windows not to boot?
I really hope someone can help me getting back in Windows again, because losing the Windows partition really is not fun, even though I hardly use it. I can enter the Windows partition from Linux with a file manager though, so it's not vanished. Just wish to be able to boot Win7 when I need it.

Should I use XEN or VirtualBox to host linux on windows 7 or windows 7 on linux? Since I've read about the problems of reading/writing NTFS disks with linux usnig the Linux NTFS driver, I thought it would be better to host windows on linux. I think the problem is that you never can be sure if the linux NTFS driver is going to corrupt your disk because Microsoft does not publish the format for linux developers.
By running windows on linux, I could read and write EXT3 from windows. I think there are EXT3 drivers for windows. Then I got to thinking: If I am running Linux on Windows, am I going to be using SAMBA or the linux NTFS driver? I think I'm going to be using SAMBA to read and write the linux partitions -- correct? Are there other considerations when deciding to host linux on windows or windows on linux? I'm going to using both the linux and windows partitions for software development with java/eclipse and various databases including oracle.

I just install fedora 15 (64bit) on my Toshiba Satellite L550 laptop.I realise a problem with my fan. It is ON almost allways (90% of the time my laptop is on).My processors are not active and there is no an obvious process that captures my cpu.I had the same problem on fedora 13 and 14 too. I hoped that they solved it in 15.... but... this was not true . When I run it from inside Windows 7 (from a Virtual Machine) it works fine! I was searching to the internet to find a solution (for days) with no luck!Is it a compatibility problem between my CPU and Linux kernel? The problem is very annoying indeed and prevents me for using fedora as my default OS with or w/o A/C.I must say that the same problem exists in ubuntu 10 too

I want to switch from Windows 7 (32-bit) to Ubuntu 10.10 (32-bit), but I can't install it on my PC for some reason. I've tried burning the .iso onto 2 or 3 different DVD+ROM discs now, I keep getting the following message when I try to install it.
Message:
BusyBox v1.15.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.15.3-1ubuntu5) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.
(initramfs) mount: mounting /dev/loop0 on //filesystem.squashfs failed: Input/output error
Can not mount /dev/loop0 (/cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs) on //filesystem.squashfs
Edit: I got it to work, I'm not sure if this actually made any difference, but I formatted my hard drive using my Windows 7 installation DVD before trying to install Ubuntu 10.10. But it worked fine after that and I'm now running it on my PC without any problems (at the moment).
