I'm running a java app when my specific user (not root) login. It's running fine. The problem is that profile.local are calling my app twice ... The first call, it's blocking Linux environment until I close java app. After that, occurs the second call, then it's free Linux for usage.I tried to change my java app for gedit, and I can see the problem too.I tried with profile.local and /home/<my user>/.profile, the result is the same.
I am having Opensuse 11.0. Recently I upgraded my system including kernel. Now I am unable to login in X as user. However I can login as root and working perfectly. I can login as user in failsafe as well as after pressing ctrl-alt-f1 when login screen appears.I have tried following---1. Emptied /temp folder and 2. deleting and adding user.
I have just bought a PC with SUSE 10.1-0. The first time I started the PC an installation menu appeared. I didn't define a user name, thinking that it should log in automatically (as in Windows occurs), but now I can't go farther from the Welcome screen, due to the system is asking me de user and password, but I didn't introduce nothing! Leaving username and password in blank didn't solve the matter.
I can see the admin screen (pressing F10) but I am not able to find any user to log (logically) and I can't include new users from there.
I have also tried to install Windows XP modifying the BIOS but the system returns a message (once in the WinXP installation program) about an error called 4096, about the file i386halaacpi.dll, which is unable to find (something about the HAL), so I am afraid that my (new) RAM memory is damaged.
What could I do? The system is for an old person, so I would like to install finally WinXP and delete Suse.
My desktop is running 'buntu 9.10 and I have recently aquired a couple of half decent servers running Windows server 2003. I have a few windows app's that I use regularly for work that I have had limited success in running with wine or in vm's. I stumbled upon a how to to call apps in a vm to run seamlessly on the host desktop and did some playing and have succeeded in calling app's on my servers from my 'buntu desktop, the command I have set in my launcher for one of them (DIALux)
My question is, can I change the default application/file association in 'buntu with a custom command so I can double click on a file and have it open in one of these remote app's??If I can, what is the correct custom command to be using as using the above doesn't work at all, it just tries to open the file with rdesktop not the remote app.
I need to execute a SQL via shell script and i am connecting to Oracle DB by this way $USERNAME1/$PASSWORD1@$STRING1 and i need to get username, password and string from someother file stored in the Unix Directory. $Username, $Password and $String is stored in File A in Path A and i want to call it in the test.sh in Path B.
Format of File A.txt Username=test_db Password=***** Instance=ORACLEDB
I'm trying to call a specific variable based on a user selection. For example:
Code: Select a file:
[1] foo.tar [2] bar.tar
Enter a selection: I have already coded each possible selection to have its own variable. If the user selects 2 I need to select $SELECTED_TAR2, or if they select 1 I need to select $SELECTED_TAR1 and then do something like this behind the scenes:
I am new to Linux and wow, it did not take me long to run into a huge snag. I am running Suse Linux Enterprise 10 on a laptop and by some strange reason the computer froze from overheating and I was forced to shutdown improperly. Once I restarted it booted right to the command prompt when it usually instead boots to the default user. I managed to get gnome running using the "startx gnome" command. But when gnome loads, none of my normal extentions load like my wireless driver, the sound driver, etc. how to restore gnome to automatically load the default user on start up or fix any other damage I might have done? lol
Whenever i'm trying to install apps via one click install or any other way, it later demands i insert the OpenSuse 11.4 CD into the drive, otherwise it won't install.
created a user but i forgot to change the home directory permission.so after user created when i go to the user and group mangement i cant see that permission filed related to the home permission directory.my purpose is to stop accessing other user to my home directory, how it can be possible??
Im running suse 11.2 on a gateway lt3103u during boot i noticed the screen goes dim. i thought nothing of it untill i tried to watch *ahem* educational video *ahem*. ive found that no matter what program i use xine vlc or anything else that video sets the screen to dim as if it were in power saving mode. this problem also occurs when i close the lid. it locks the screen into dim mode. in both cases i can use both Fn keys and the power management widget to reset it to bright, but this problem is annoying having to keep turning it back u to see.
I'm trying to install kweather in 11.2. I have downloaded and installed. I can find it in usr/bin and usr/lib but I can't add an application as in 11 or 11.1. It doesn't show up in the list of apps. It's there but I can't get it on the desktop.
I am writing device driver in which i have to call callback function from kernel space, which are saving my data. But the callback functions are in userspace. While accessing them i am getting segmentation fault.
and got the same error as before.Has either or both dbus-launch or gksudo changed their behavior os is this a bug. Note that the command does not work with any applications being run as the user gdm.
I've just installed Debian 5.0.1 (i386; network install) and I've run into a bizarre issue that I have no idea how to troubleshoot. If I log on as (e.g.) User1, log off, and then try to log on again as User2, X-based (i.e. not terminal) software will fail to load until I reboot. After logging on as User2, all X software (including the Gnome interface) will display its interface for a fraction of a second before vanishing from the screen and the task bar. One time the Gnome interface wouldn't load after log-on: the taskbar and menubar repeatedly flashed on and off the screen as Gnome repeatedly tried and failed to load.
Using opensuse 11.1 64 bit with kde 4.1.3, apps like k3b, or any multimedia apps can not see the optical drives unless I run the apps as root. I also found that to run bladeenc, I have to do it in a root terminal. Is there a way to set permissions for the normal user? Firefox or any text editor work fine as normal user.
I have just downloaded and installed the 32 bit server version on a couple of machines. These machines are remote displays, no keyboards or mice, requiring a kick of from ssh to start the app. Its just bare sever install with TWM, X, and XDM.Problem is they don't seem to read my /etc/X0.hosts file until theres been a keyboard login. After that locally xhost returns the names from the file.I removed the exec /usr/bin/X -nolisten tcp "$@" linefrom /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc but this also isIn the user .profile I have these 2 lines, DISPLAY='0.0'xhost +This is a real chicken and egg thing, no auto login, no keyboard for login and no ssh X access before a local login. And no easy way to make it auto login with out installing GWM.
I am using the sudo command to log on locally as another user by the following command:
sudo -u theotheruser -s or sudo -u theotheruser sh
As I see it, this initiates a new shell with the mentioned other user. However, this doesn't load that users profile from his home directory. Is there a way to automatically read the users profile when login in with selected command? I am mostely interested in getting a working prompt when logged in.
yesterday I updated my fedora 13 to fedora 14 (on laptop) and today i cannot log in on user. It just go blank for a sec and is back to login.
At text console (alt+ctr+f2/f3) i enter my username and pass it give this for a sec and resets (clean) console username: Name password: last used: [date] login: no shell permission denied
i used unetbootin (fedora 14 netinstall to update) and later i updated 1,5G before reboot (did update that fix, forgot its name tho :s)
I would most likely reinstall everything, but i have some work at laptop and as death-line is near, i would prefer to fix it if possible.
edited: i have installed F13 on unused space, is there a way for me to access and fix it? or at least get some files from there?
I have two internal partitions that I auto-mount at startup using fstab. This works fine & I can unmount/mount as a normal user no problem in the terminal (umount /dev/sdb1) but using thunar (or nautilus) I receive a message saying "not authorised to perform operation" (I use the DWM window manager, in gnome it pops up with a password prompt).
If I open thunar as root then I can mount/unmount.
The strange thing is I can mount/unmount usb sticks or mtp devices as a normal user no probs from thunar! So, I'm assuming it must be my fstab that's the problem?
I'm seeing really bad user login format under a standard installation and am wondering why ubuntu does this as default. I have noticed that the graphical login for gnome sizes itself to accommodate a user's exact password length. This indicates to me that somewhere on the unencrypted part of a standard installation with user encryption contains at least some indication of the content of the password length which seems a security flaw even if not a complete hole, it majorly reduces the number of attempts a cracker would have to cycle through.
And that's assuming that *only* the length is contained. Furthermore it seems that it would be MUCH better to simply display the number of characters entered into the pw field and allowing the gui to expand itself from an fixed size as the field is filled out so the the user still receives visual feedback for entering characters. Either a simple character count display should be entered into the field or a 10 dot to new line so that one can visually quickly count the number enter by multiplying from a 10base graphical observation.
I have a network set up that has been working for around a year with no problems but has now developed a login problem. The system was set up with a main server with all users on it and another PC located elsewhere that people could log onto using there personal login and password that then gained access to the account on the main server. This remote PC has now got the problem. When you try to log onto an account it comes up with the message "your session has lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself this could mean there is a installation problem or that you are out of disk space."
Error message says that no profile for the user can be found and it couldnt create per-user gnome configuration directory. I can log on as root onto the remote PC as it is obviously a local account but all the account on the main server are not accessible. From the root account I can see that the connection to the server is OK and I can actually log into the accounts on the server using the failsafe session so the physical network is OK.
I never built or designed this set up and to be honest I normally work with windows so its all a bit strange to me. Both PC's run Centos 5. I have checked the messages log and there doesnt seem to be any indication of a problem. Just that it stopped connecting from the remote PC. The accounts are all active on the main server itself and have no problems being accessed.
Is it possible "reset" all (X, GDM related) permissions/settings of one user? What would cause one specific user not to be able to log into anything via gdm/the login screen? After providing the proper password, the screen goes black and then jumps back to the login screen. No session alternative works, not even xterm or gnome failsafe. I can however log in via the console (Ctrl+Alt+F6, recovery etc). With another user I can log in via GDM just fine, and deleting and re-adding the "broken" user doesn't make any difference.

I recently installed Suse Linux enterprise Desktop 11 on my box. I created an user and logged in first time into a GNOME session without any problems. Last time I logged in I selected the session as TWM and that got me into the T windows manager just fine. Now when I log out and try to log back into a GNOME session, it will still log me into the TVM sessionI have tried restarting the boxHowever, when I remote log in to the machine it will let me get on the GNOME session just fine. I'm guessing this is probably a really simple fix, however I am a Linux newbie and doing a google search isn't yielding me what I'm looking for.
I've been trying to figure out how to set up vsftpd on a test machine to emulate the ftp setup on our current ftp server. I was able to track down part of what I needed with the gracious help of poster AlucardZero on this forum, who pointed out that the vsftpd process likely being run via xinetd.
I've managed (or so I thought) to set everything up correctly - but I cannot connect to my test box as the user the ftp client program we're using expects. I can see in the vsftpd log that I'm making contact, but the client program is automatically failing, and attempts to get in from the Windows command line (ftp <ip>) request user and password, then fail out with '530 Login incorrect'.
Everything I've seen online so far indicates that the ftp login for a local user (with vsftpd configuration settings including anonymous_enable=NO and local_enable=YES) should be the same as the 'normal' login for that user, and that the passwords should be the same as well. This is the case on the current FTP server, where a Windows command line login uses the same password as attempting to su into the user in question. On my test machine, I can su into the user in question with the password as well. I simply cannot seem to connect with this user via ftp.
Below are the things I've found so far during my search on the two servers:
Code:
I'm obviously missing something simple, because I've read many posts on this site and others concerning successful setups - I simply haven't managed one on my own. Most of these eventually boiled back down to this howto page, and I've tried to follow the 'add and change user' instructions shown there to no avail.
I can't seem to boot to windows xp after installation and then update from the openSUSE 11.1 live cd. This is my /boot/grub/menu.lst
Code:

/dev/sda1 boots fine to the system restore from Acer. when selecting Windows option on boot menu it simply flickers and returns to the menu. /dev/sda3 is non bootable, symply filesystem. When using boot loader settings from YasT I go to other and press "Propose new configuration" it changes the menu but when pressing OK it asks for a floppy disk and doesn't save the configuration (so on new boot I return to the same).
I have problem in installation suse linux9.3 in my computer. I finish the setup steps and remove cd from cdrom and configure my network and my graphic card. The linux don't open suse linux desktop. It give to me black window and don't enter.
