i currently have a Macbook and would like to install it there as a duel boot with OSX.
Tried to get it going using bootcamp but its just annoying me now, do i have to install windows first before installing Linux or is there another way around this since i need a authentic version of windows, to which i will never use i just want the linux and OSX running.
I've found tons of tutorials on how to duel boot Ubuntu with Windows already being installed but not the other way around,

I need to format the part of the harddrive to good old ntfs (or what ever it may be called ) So I went system > administration > disk utility. of course I then choose the hard drive deleted the uber student partition of 100 gigs and turned it in to ntfs.Ramed windows disk in. But the windows screen didnt show up this partion and only gave me the option to use my swap space my 140 for ubuntu or my 110 for logical partitions.

It booted several times. but it did not recognize my wireless network adapter. so we followed the instructions to install and use the windows driver for it.cold not get it to work and decided to reboot. now the machine boots to the dual boot screen and will not go any further. nor will the keyboard work to select which os to boot. the machine just completly hangs up i cant even get in to bios.

I've just installed linux on my Acer Aspire One netbook, (10.10 netbook edition) I've done it as a duel boot with Windows 7 Starter as i want to use Linux, family want to use windows. But ideally i would want the pc to boot up as Windows then say if i hit a certain key on bootup it would swap it over to Linux from windows before it starts to load?

Every tutorial I find says put the ubuntu cd in, and press install, but my computer isn't detecting the cd at start up, so is there any other ways I can remove windows without (or another way to load the cd)? I can't access Windows at all, so.. I won't be able to do anything about that.
I choose the drive to boot to from the computer Bios. When i boot into Windows my clock time changes, about 5 hours.I have another computer with Ubuntu 10.10 installed, but it will not install on this computer, Debian Did. Ubuntu gave me a command to fix this and it worked. However the Debian computer will not accept that command, Which is open a terminal from the menu applications accessories and type gksudo gedit /ect/defaults/rcs in this configuration change the row UTC set it as:UTC=no save and reboot and then set the clock. I have installed Grub and Grub2 both program pick up ubuntu just fine, but they will not even find the windows install. I have tried a few fixes and none seem to have worked. "Something" happened to my friend's computer, and now he somehow expects me to know how to fix it. Sigh.The symptoms: There are two partitions - a Windows XP partition and a larger partition for SuSE 10.3 it seems. He can boot into the Windows, but not into the SuSE anymore. However, he can boot using the Fail-safe method.

How do I get CentOS to boot from openSUSE 11.2-11.3 grub.
I am having trouble booting off a cdrom using isolinux. I see the isolinux prompt and it seems to boot but I run into:

I can't seem to get much debug information either other than the two lines. What do you think I have a problem with?

I am seeing a udev error message on booting that I have not seen before with LInux and which I cannot interpret. My Suse 11.4-KDE installation is fairly new. My system is a System 76 PanP4 Pangolin that originally ran Ubuntu.Uname -a returns: Linux linux-zcga 2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-04-25 21:48:33 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux. My video is a Geforce 9300M with an nVidia driver.A Google search turns up the fact that similar error messages have been reported with Fedora, Ubuntu, Meego and Gentoo. These frequently have had something to do with sound and in at least one case the advised correction was to reinstall udev. I can see where bugs were filed but with no clear response. Some of these go back several years, the most recent is within the last few months. I did not see a posting that involved Suse.
1.Can someone tell me what these error messages mean?
2.Does this pose a problem?Everything seems to work normally on my system once I am through the boot process.
3.If this is a problem how does one fix it?

View 1 Replies View RelatedThe suse 10.0 64 bit partition on my box stops booting when it is setting up the cmos clock. The suse 10.0 32 bit partition boots up without a problem. I never had a problem with the suse 10.0 64 bit partition up until now. Is it possible to fix the problem using puppy linux and editing a configuration file? I do not think it is a hardware issue if the other partition on the drive boots up. Would puppy linux be a good way to backup files from this partition or can I mount the partition using the 32 bit os?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm new to linux, and I'm just trying to learn OpenSUSE. I just installed it and I have a few quick questions. #1 I accidentally installed the "OpenSUSE Installer (LOCAL)" on Windows 7, so now I get the option to choose windows or the installer at the windows boot screen. I ended up just installing OpenSUSE on a completely different HD (my original intent) from a burned DVD, so this installer is useless and I don't know how to remove it.
#2 After installing opensuse on my second HD, the boot screen is now SUSE's instead of Windows, and I can choose suse's desktop, the suse failsafe, windows 1, and windows 2. Windows 1 brings me to the windows boot screen with the choice i mentioned above (windows or the local installer i accidentally installed), and windows 2 i assume is my second windows partition which is just my SWAP file, and selecting it does nothing (which would make sense if thats all it is).
My question here is how do I make it so my default boot screen is the windows one with an option between windows 7 or suse? Or would this require reinstalling the system? If it does and its simple enough to explain please do I wouldnt mind removing it and reinstalling at this point, I would just wipe my whole second HD from windows.
#3 I have a netgear adapter. unfortunitly i'm not at home right now and I don't remember the model, so I'll provide that this evening if necessary. What I do know is they do not have a driver for linux. I've found ACX100, but I didn't find my netgear adapter listed on their website. I also found NDISWrapper, but thats for XP and I still don't know if that'll work. I will of course try both unless someone here has a better solution. If anyone knows anything that will work on any netgear adapter for linux please let me know, if not then I'll provide the model later on.
i am having some issues with dual booting my SL6.1 and Windows. The situation is that i recently acquired an old hard drive from a non-working computer of mine with Windows already installed (i know the windows is functional, as i tested it on my new PC with SL6.1 currently installed & everything runs fine)
The problem is that after editing the grub.config to include windows, windows will no longer boot after an attempt to install a legit version of McAffee anti-virus software which coincidently was only after the first attempt at running both OS's in a dual-boot fashion. Except past the windows start up screen before the dreaded blue-screen.
Which is weird because SL6.1 OS will still boot & works perfectly fine like always, so it doesn't really make sense.
My current setup is:
Disk 1: Solid-State:
Boot Partition
SL6 LVM1: Root Partition
Disk 2: Hard Drive:
SL6 LVM2: User, Temp & Swap Space Partitions (Different LVM to Root)
Disk 3: Hard Drive:
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
My guess is its windows MBR. The reason i say this is because the Hard Drive contents of the Windows software still appears intact when accessing the drive from the Linux OS. I don't won't to go through the rigmarole of re-installing both OS's. So hopefully their is a relatively simple solution.
I've read that, when configuring a dual-boot system, you should install Windows first to avoid any issues.Some questions: I'm assuming this has to do with the boot loader so: How is Windows boot loader so different that this matters? If I'm totally off, please explain.Is this the same case with Windows 7 and Windows XP? Depending on question 1 of course: Will installing Windows later on mean that it will definitely not work or just that you might encounter issues later on? Some tutorials are kind of ambiguous about that point.

I can select 1024x768 resolution in system,preferences, display. HOWEVER I cannot select APPLY to this resolution because the apply button is not visable on the bottom of the screen because the display is SOOOO big.
