I am currently trying to compile mpeg4ip on F12 in order to do live broadcasts using Mp4live (a real-time encoding tool which mpeg4ip provides). The idea is to use mpeg4ip as broadcast software for Darwin Streaming Server which i am already running (v. 6.0.3 ) and streaming pre-recorded media. So i use the command

Ubuntu :: Compile Application From Source In Order To Modify?

Sep 1, 2011

I have the source of the application I want to modify, as well as the list of dependencies I need in order to compile. I got the source code for those and compiled/installed them. I'm fairly sure that all of the dependencies are installed. However, when I go to run the compiler it crashes while parsing some of the code.

I had the application installed before, and it ran. After tinkering around trying to get the source to compile, the app no longer runs either. It crashes, and if run from the CLI, spits out something about not finding one of the files from the SDL library.

So obviously I did something wrong to mess everything up, because I'm in a deeper hole than when I started. Anyone know how I would go about fixing this? Or even starting with a clean slate so that I can have another go at it?

Fedora :: YUM Install Vs Compile ... Which Is Better?

Jun 29, 2010

I have been playing around with linux for a bit ... but i am getting to the point where i would like to know what is actually happening to the system .

Scenario ... I would like to install Mozilla Thunderbird On mozilla thunderbird website, current version is 3.1

However, when i run 'yum search thunderbird' i get a version 3.0.5.xxx

Why is repository not up to date?

So is it better to install through YUM or should i download the source and compile it?

If i compile it, will the YUM keep track of it if an update is made?

If compiled, how can i get it so it appears in the menu system (alacarte?)

Is it possible to extract and install source files through YUM (so it can keep track of the package)?

Looking through the FAQ at kernelnewbies, states to extract the kernel to a Linux directory, in usr/src, which also doesn't exist.

Fedora :: Compile From Source - Install Buddi Budget Manager And The ./configure Command Doesn’t Work

Nov 24, 2009

Ive been using linux for a few months now and every now and again i come accross a program that doesnt have a rpm package but says that it can be installed on Fedora using source. I'm familiar with build essentials and the following commands:-

tar xzvf package.tar.gz
cd package
./configure
make
make install

but from what i have read fedora uses a differnet compiler. I'm trying to install Buddi budget manager and the ./configure command doesnt work, which im guessing is because it doesnt have a configure file? Can anyone confirm how to compile from source and whether there are any tutorials specific to fedora.

General :: Win7 - Multiple OS Install Order?

Jan 20, 2011

I am currently running Windows 7. I want to install the latest ubuntu (which I know I can just install right on top of &) but I also want to install FreeBSD and either Windows Server 2003 (maybe 2008 if i can get my hands on it). What would be the best way to go about installing these 3 OSes next to W7? I was also thinking about just upgrading my hard drive to a 2TB internal anyways, so waiting to get that is also an option, then installing everything in the "best" order. I also want to try installing Mac sometime too once I upgrade hardware.

Hardware :: Can't Install After Changing Boot Order

Jul 2, 2010

I may be in the wrong section here (hardware) but I do believe this is a hardware issue. If indeed it is not, I welcome any admins to move this post to the correct section. That said, here's the issue:After years of frustration and problems with Windows XP, my parents finally asked me to install a Linux distro onto their machine. Taking their needs and lack of experience outside Windows in mind, I suggested Ubuntu and Linux Mint to them (as I do to pretty much anyone who wants an easy and beginner-friendly distro). Running first Mint's live session and then Ubuntu's on my own machine to give them an idea of how their new desktop would look, they picked Ubuntu and I grabbed the disk, my external hard drive, and proceeded to back up all their pics, music, docs, etc onto the external.

Once finished, I popped Ubuntu (10.04 LTS) into their machine for a reboot. Realizing when the Windows XP logo came up that the boot order is set to boot from the hard drive first, I went into BIOS and changed the boot order to check the appropriate DVD drive first (they have two DVD drives, both can and have burned onto DVDs without issue), and then the hard drive. Saving my changes and exiting, I did another reboot.I got as far as the splash screen where the dots under the Ubuntu logo lit up as normal, and then after a bit of a wait on my part, suddenly exits to a screen with a prompt telling me a boot device could not be found. Trying again with Linux Mint proved similar.Next I tried simply letting it boot into Windows as normal where I could then use Wubi to install Ubuntu beside Windows but again, the screen got as far as the Windows logo with the blue "loading bar" underneath and then would simply reboot. Having to focus my attention elsewhere for a couple minutes I found out upon return that the system was stuck in an endless loop of rebooting, asking to select between a safe mode, normal boot and last known configuration for Windows, then to the logo and starting over again.I went back into the BIOS and returned the settings to booting from the hard drive first as before (nothing else had been changed), and attempted another reboot. Same loop.I had made a boot "stick" for Ubuntu some time ago, and I've used it once when installing Ubuntu on a friend's laptop which had a broken CD drive. After it wouldn't boot from the USB device I looked in BIOS and selected "look for other devices to boot from" as there was not option to boot from USB in the standard option list (just hard drive, DC/DVD, and disabled). Still no luck.

Calling up my self-proclaimed computer expert uncle, he assured me that returning the BIOS to its default settings would allow it to boot normally back into Windows, probably after performing a disk check.Taking his advice I returned the BIOS to its default settings and reboot. No change, same loop! Frustrated I called him up again, and he said he'd have a look at it when he next gets a chance. heh. That may not be for a while as he is known for taking on projects he can't (or won't) finish.Anyway, tired and now uncertain, I thought perhaps it's something to do with a live disk. I tried an openSUSE installation disk and ended up with "please insert disk 1 into drive" prompt after selecting "install" from the first menu on the disk.

OpenSUSE Install :: Install A Recent Kernel And Then Compile Some Variations?

Jan 25, 2011

I'm running 11.2 with standard repositories (plus packman). I want to install a recent kernel and then compile some variations of it (to investigate a hardware problem).

So I took these steps:

(1) add the 11.2 Kernel:/HEAD repository
(2) enable multiversion in zypp.conf
(3) use YaST software management to select the kernel development pattern

Note that at the moment, the standard 11.2 kernel ( 2.6.31.14-0.6-desktop) is in use and I have not selected any packages from HEAD. But it has installed 2.6.37-41.1 versions of all the kernel packages I didn't already have (source & docs etc) instead of the 2.6.31 versions. /usr/src/linux symlinks to linux-2.6.37-41 instead of to a directory for the running kernel!

(1) it should have loaded the packages corresponding to the running kernel
(2) it's not supposed to switch repositories

I just moved from openSUSE 11.0 to 11.2.

While I like to new login screen (I was using a face based theme previously), I am stumped on how to control the order that the user names are presented.

As best I can tell, they are presented in the order who logs in most frequently. While that makes a certain amount of sense, I would like to be able to force the list to remain alphabetical.

Is there any way to control this, and if so, where?

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Compiling GTK+ 1.2 On Suse 11.3 X64 In Order To Install Xmms 1?

Jul 17, 2010

I Currently have the problem of not being able to install xmms on suse 11.3, apparently since there's no way to install it from the packman repos because xmms claims it's missing glib 1.22 -oh yeah that one. But since it worked like a charm on 11.2 i'm just wondering if the glib, gtk, and gdk rpms will be present in the future or have i just missed something. I've tried to compile gtk 1.2 and above on 11.3 but since it is a 64bit system it do not comply with my request.Output from glib-1.2.2 and 1.2.10

Code:
checking host system type... Invalid configuration `x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu': machine `x86_64-unknown' not recognized
checking build system type... Invalid configuration `x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu': machine `x86_64-unknown' not recognized
and what's missing for xmms

[Code]...

If anyone could give me a tip on how to compile the old 32bit gtk libs on a brand new 64bit system would be much appreciated. Or if there is an even simpler way please tell i.e if there is any repos hosting what i need. Greets
