Jun 26, 2010Whether it is possible to install GRUB in windows to boot. Because I have installed one of the linux distro on USB. Now without the USB i am not able to boot windows.

Unfortunately i have executed below shell cmd. grub-install /dev/sda windows drive is not visible But /dev/sda3 is a windows vista file system, now sda3 file system is not in visible for both in linux and also vista OS. How can i retrieve my data back in vista sda3. Here is the info of system

Apr 27, 2010I have a used PC that came pre-installed with suse 11.2.Unfortunately, I do not have the install disk to use in case of whatever.I already know that when configuring a dual boot with Windows and Linux, it is recommended to install Windows first.I do not have that luxury now as 11.2 is installed and GRUB is the boot loader.Question is, if I boot the Windows 98 install disk on boot, how to not mess up GRUB and still add Windows 98 to GRUB menu?
One hard drive only here. 98gb free.It seems that W98 install will overwrite GRUB in this situation - causing problems. Maybe not, I don't really know for sure.I just need to install windows 98 on the same hard drive and if possible, have suse and w98 visible on boot in GRUB.

Aug 24, 2010I had to dual boot my computer again with windows unfortunately for school. This is something I've dealt with dozens of times in the past but when I try to recover grub 2 with the ubuntu live cd I get this:

Jul 2, 2011i am having some issues with dual booting my SL6.1 and Windows. The situation is that i recently acquired an old hard drive from a non-working computer of mine with Windows already installed (i know the windows is functional, as i tested it on my new PC with SL6.1 currently installed & everything runs fine)
The problem is that after editing the grub.config to include windows, windows will no longer boot after an attempt to install a legit version of McAffee anti-virus software which coincidently was only after the first attempt at running both OS's in a dual-boot fashion. Except past the windows start up screen before the dreaded blue-screen.
Which is weird because SL6.1 OS will still boot & works perfectly fine like always, so it doesn't really make sense.
My current setup is:
Disk 1: Solid-State:
Boot Partition
SL6 LVM1: Root Partition
Disk 2: Hard Drive:
SL6 LVM2: User, Temp & Swap Space Partitions (Different LVM to Root)
Disk 3: Hard Drive:
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit
My guess is its windows MBR. The reason i say this is because the Hard Drive contents of the Windows software still appears intact when accessing the drive from the Linux OS. I don't won't to go through the rigmarole of re-installing both OS's. So hopefully their is a relatively simple solution.

Mar 10, 2010I virus got my XP installation this morning. I have to install it. When I install windows it will write over the GRUB and I will no longer be able to re-boot my openSusie OS. My question is After XP is installed is there a way to re-install GRUB without having to re-install openSusie 11.2?

Mar 17, 2011Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen....nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete....system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. It says to install GRUB to the bootsector of the partition that Linux is being installed to and not the MBR of your hard drive.
I am trying to install Linux Mint Debian to the second partition. When the installer gets to where you are asked to install GRUB the only option is to install GRUB to /dev/sda which I believe is the MBR.
I decided just not to install GRUB and proceeded with the installation.
How can I install GRUB to the bootsector of my Linux partition?

Jan 11, 2010So, I converted a Vista user by enticing her with WUBI. She's a computer idiot, and she thinks Linux is great.
HOWEVER, she recently had Ubuntu muck up for her, so she uninstalled WUBI/Ubuntu and reinstalled it (9.10). Upon restart, GRUB presented no boot menu and went straight into Ubuntu. The funny thing is, under the GRUB configuration files, the timeout for the boot menu is set to 10. I tried the following (made sure to change the boot device to hda1,0 since fdisk shows her NTFS as /dev/sdb1):

No luck. No boot menu, no Windows option. I also tried the following:

Nov 21, 2010I re-installed Windows over an old Windows partition. The hard-drive used to have Windows and Ubuntu on it. I am now in usb live ubuntu because grub doesn't appear anymore when I boot the computer (it boots in the new windows automatically). The ubuntu partition is still there, as I can access my files from this live usb. I'd just like to know how to re-install grub.

Jan 29, 2010My problem is that I have installed openSUSE 11.2 on a laptop with Windows 7 already installed. Yast resized my Windows partitions, which seemed to upset Windows as I had to go to my Windows Recovery Disc to restore it. When Windows was restored it did something so that GRUB no longer appeared. So I did a system recovery for openSUSE 11.2 which then removed Windows 7 from GRUB! Now I'm trying to restore Windows 7 and configure GRUB so that Windows and openSUSE will stop fight for boot supremacy and play nice with each other. Here are my Yast2 Boot Loader settings:

I have been carrying out updates of both Vista & SuSE whenever i operate in them.
One (Not So) Fine Day, when i Choose from the Grub loader "Microsoft Windows Vista SP2" option it just din't boot into Vista. I have Tried many a time.
My First doubt was towards Vista only, so i choose the "Windows Recovery Mode" option from Grub. It went into the Recovery mode. I ran Memory Tests on Windows Partition, took its own sweet time, whatever missing indexes and all it carried out and finally gave the Thumbs Up result. After that, i carried out Startup Repairs, all came out well. So, Yet again i restarted and tried to get in Vista. Nope, dint work.
