I had to dual boot my computer again with windows unfortunately for school. This is something I've dealt with dozens of times in the past but when I try to recover grub 2 with the ubuntu live cd I get this:
sudo grub
sudo: grub: command not found
I have a laptop with two partitions, dual booting Vista and Ubuntu. laptop was originally furnished with Vista. It's become totally unusable and I want to install XP on the NTFS partition erasing Vista. I know that after installing XP it will overwrite the MBR and GRUB will be lost. how to recover GRUB after the XP install. all data is now on the Ubuntu partition. I need XP just for games for my kids. barbie and harry potter ...

I have tried ubuntu sec 8.4 recover mode and all i get is unreconized command.. i do not know how to set anything.. i have no disks for this not even the orginal windows recover disk.. is their anything i can do to get win to run as it use to??
I installed Ext2fsd from windows XP because I needed access to a text file on my ubuntu install. However, it didn't work because the drive is ext4 and all it listed was the root folders (/home, /var etc..) nothing any deeper.
I closed the app and continued working in windows.
Today I went to start my computer and it loaded the grub-rescue> prompt. I immediately tried to run "help" to find out what happened, however, grub reported the command as unknown.
I then ls and got a partial listing of the partitions.

So what do I do? How do I recover my linux partition? If the partition is bad - then how is the bios able to find the grub-rescue> prompt?
I have a used PC that came pre-installed with suse 11.2.Unfortunately, I do not have the install disk to use in case of whatever.I already know that when configuring a dual boot with Windows and Linux, it is recommended to install Windows first.I do not have that luxury now as 11.2 is installed and GRUB is the boot loader.Question is, if I boot the Windows 98 install disk on boot, how to not mess up GRUB and still add Windows 98 to GRUB menu?
One hard drive only here. 98gb free.It seems that W98 install will overwrite GRUB in this situation - causing problems. Maybe not, I don't really know for sure.I just need to install windows 98 on the same hard drive and if possible, have suse and w98 visible on boot in GRUB.
I let a 'friend' use my laptop over the weekend. Now when I turn it on, it loads the BIOS details, then says no active partition, then no OS cannot be found.
It looks like they have deleted the partition with SuSE with the Grub Loader.
I cannot load up SuSE or Windows 7!
Any ideas on how to recover the boot to load Windows 7?
I have tried using the Windows 7 install disc to repair - but it does not recognise that Windows is installed and wants to do a clean install only.
Is it worth trying to reinstall SuSE and hope it detects Windows on the other partition? (I assume it is still there!)

I gave sda1-2 for windows and sda 3-4-5 on an extended partition for my linux OS. I installed ubuntu on sda 7 (when I go into disk utilities it shows up as sda 7 idk why) alongside another ubuntu on sda 5 ( EXTENDEDPARTITION : sda 5-6-7 ) so I could remove mandriva bootloader.Since I did, I removed ubuntu (sda 7) since it wasn't necessary but after it gave me the grub file not found.Obviously yes, since GRUB was installed from sda 7 but i have another grub.conf on sda 5 and I would like to know how to change the path of the grub reader to sda 5? or must I install all over again de grub loader?

I've been trying change the default OS in GRUB. I changed the value for GRUB_DEFAULT in etc/default/grub. However, when I run update-grub, I get the following error:
/etc/default/grub: 19: e: not found
I just got a new computer that has Windows 7 Ultimate, and I want to install Ubuntu to a partition that I created. I want to be able to re-add my Windows 7 to the GRUB, without erasing either of my operating systems. I have seen people that changed the menu.lst file, but got the BOOTMGR not found error. Will I get this problem? My computer came with one drive split in two partitions, WIN7 and DATA. I took 150GB out of the DATA partition to make a new one called Linux. So, how would I put Windows 7 in GRUB, but not erase eithr operating system, and will I get the BOOTMGR not found error?

Rebuilt an old box of mine and changed up the drives. Did not think it was an issue as I was formatting the drives and reinstalling the systems. I installed XP first. Then PCLOS. After PCLOS was installed XP would not boot and gave me an error saying the BOOTMGR was not found and to restart. I figured that I just had to map the drives as XP was installed on HD1 and not HD0. But no changes I made to the GRUB configuration seemed to work.I have run a script to get all the information you guys will need already. Let me know what I am missing here

Why would this be so?
I've been using Linux for over a decade, so no need to worry about the obvious. I'm positive that I have my partitions/install correct. What has me baffled is that Fedora 14, which uses GRUB 0.97 (GRUB legacy) - boots Windows flawlessly every single time on the same hardware, but Ubuntu's (or the upstream Debian's) GRUB legacy do not - even though they are based on the same upstream code from the GNU Savannah servers.
No matter what I've tried I cannot get the Debian or Ubuntu version of GRUB/GRUB-legacy to boot any recent Windows 64 beyond XP (Vista or 7). All that it does is resets the computer when Windows attempts to boot, without an error. GRUB is notoriously difficult to compile, so before I try to compile code from RedHat's archives - any thoughts,experiences, similar issues - whatever?
I got ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx along with windows (dual boot) and using Grub. On my computer, I have my C:/ (programs) and D:/ (data). I've never used my D:/ before that day that I've lost my windows partition on my grub menu. I usually use my D:/ with windows. The first time I used my D:/ to store data with linux, I lost my windows option in my grub menu. I'm not sure what I did wrong but I do want to restore my windows option in my grub menu.

I checked in /boot/grub and there is no menu.lst to modify. how I can get back my windows option in my grub menu ?
installed windows 7..then tried restoring grub using live cd....mounted partition somewhere else....then installed ubuntu again where it was installed previously and now grub is not detecting windows 7 but i am able use my windows files

I had my Laptop, a Dell Inspiron 1520, running Windows 7 and Windows XP - I had a few gigs of unallocated space, so I decided to install Kubuntu alongside it, worked fine no problem, with the exception of running out of space very quickly - I got fed up with it, and installed Kubuntu over the Windows XP partition (around 80gigs, and the first OS to be installed on the computer). After I installed it.
All was working perfectly until I rebooted to discover I am missing my Windows 7 boot option in GRUB, before I had to press Windows XP Embedded and it opened the boot dialog, but here I dont get the option, is there a GRUB 2 option I can change to allow it to show Windows 7? The Computer works perfectly, it's just the GRUB doesn't show Windows 7, and I'm hesitant to format its old partition and reinstall it due to the fact that it may over ride the grub and leave me without Kubuntu access?
I do not know what to do, i cannot load windows partition. it just loads grub again. this must have been something that happened when i upgraded to the 10.04 or w/e. can someoen help me out with what i can do to stop this or fix it. maybe i can reinstall but i want to know what will work first, i do not have a lot of time to fool with my computer like this again. i spent a week getting ubuntu on my computer the first time so i do not ever want to spend that much time again especially in finals week. !
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running Karmic Server with GRUB2 on a Dell XPS 420. Everything was running fine until I changed 2 BIOS settings in an attempt to make my Virtual Box guests run faster. I turned on SpeedStep and Virtualization, rebooted, and I was slapped in the face with a grub error 15. I can't, in my wildest dreams, imagine how these two settings could cause a problem for GRUB, but they have. To make matters worse, I've set my server up to use Luks encrypted LVMs on soft-RAID. From what I can gather, it seems my only hope is to reinstall GRUB. So, I've tried to follow the Live CD instructions outlined in the following article (adding the necessary steps to mount my RAID volumes and LVMs). [URL]
If I try mounting the root lvm as 'dev/vg-root' on /mnt and the boot partition as 'dev/md0' on /mnt/boot, when I try to run the command $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0, I get an errors: grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea. grub-setup: error: Embedding is not possible, but this is required when the root device is on a RAID array or LVM volume.
Somewhere in my troubleshooting, I also tried mounting the root lvm as 'dev/mapper/vg-root'. This results in the grub-install error: $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0 Invalid device 'dev/md0'
Obviously, neither case fixes the problem. I've been searching and troubleshooting for several hours this evening, and I must have my system operational by Monday morning. That means if I don't have a solution by pretty early tomorrow morning...I'm screwed. A full rebuild will by my only option.
I just installed debian from debian-live-8.2.0-amd64-standard+nonfree.iso and after installation, which finished without problems, I cannot boot the system. I get the error:

I would like to know if there is any differences on how to install and to configure GRUB 2 in the different architectures (BIOS/IBM PC-Compatibles, EFI/MacIntel and Corebbot)? Does the Ubuntu installer automatically recognize the different architectures and install the appropriate GRUB 2 package ('grub-pc', 'grub-efi' or 'grub-coreboot' according to the arch)? Or does it just install 'grub-pc'? Is the location of GRUB 2's configuration files different depending on the arch of the computer? Or are they all located in '/boot/grub/', '/etc/grub/default' and '/etc/grub.d/', no matter the arch of the computer? Are the files' structure and options to configure GRUB 2 ('/etc/grub/default' and the scripts in '/etc/grub.d/') different depending on the arch of the computer?

I'm trying to restore the grub using a ubuntu 9.10 live cd. I have two partitions in my computer, and i used the partition that contained Vista to install windows 7. Now, i'm trying to restore the grub so that i can also boot ubuntu.

View 2 Replies View Relatedmy Setup is Fedora 14 x64 + radeon hd 4830 i've downloaded .run package from ati site with latest driver for x64 systems. installed it, but didn't edited grub.conf becouse i didn't understood anything there (probably didn't spent enough time to get things understand) Now i've lost possibility to enter my Fedora system. during boot it lost it's modern blue boot screen (with filling drop), it was replaced by standard old boot screen with triple-color stripe. after this boot screen monitor start blinking going on and off. and on last step i'm getting "Fedora 14 boot bla bla bla something" on screen. nothing works except Ctrl+Alt+Delete. system reboots showing successful daemons shutting sequence. How can i edit grub menu from initial grub screen is it possible to it's own 'e' option or 'c' from grub command line?

I searched all over and didn't see a similar issue anywhere, I did an install of CentOS as a server (no GUI) with only the base. Partition is /boot ext3, size of 100MB. The rest of the drive is partitioned as / with ext3. This is being done on a CompactFlash card of 32GB in size. The BIOS sees it as an IDE drive.
When the install completes and the system reboots, the grub stops at the grub> prompt. There is no menu for OS options. If I do the following commands:
grub>root (hd0,0)
grub>kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.el5 root=LABEL=/
grub>initrd /initrd-2.6.18-194.el5.img
grub>boot
