OpenSUSE Install :: Format Windows Partitions Sda2 / Sda3?

May 20, 2010

I have been dual-booting Vista and openSUSE 11.2 until my SUSE install is fully functional and now and I want rid of Vista and to reclaim the space for Linux.

Code:
fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 320.1 GB, 320072933376 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x28000000
[Code].....

sda2 and sda3 are the Vista partitions. sda2 is a recovery partition and sda3 is the main partition. All data is safely copied from sda3 and now I want to reformat them for SUSE. I not bothered about partition resizing i.e. I am happy to just have the sda2/sda3 space available to SUSE and mount them somewhere.

1) Do I need to do anything about the boot table first or can I just reformat sda2 & sda3?

2) How should I format sda2/sda3? I'm guessing I need to unmount them and then format. Should I use ext4 or something else? Which command/tool should I use?

General :: Copy Whole Drive Sdb To Sda3?

Dec 2, 2010

I installed Debian squeeze to 40Gig pata hdd on my AMD 1090T desktop, with1Tb sata hdd.
Now that I'm quite comfortable with dual-booting, I'd like to transfer 40Gig Hd(sdb) to sda3. I viewed this thread, which is similar to my situation, but not quite the formula.

I intend on reading more on this 1 to see if what I'm looking for is include.

I've never done the dd command, so it's not like I'm going to do it today, but would like a little bit more documentation to get a further understanding of the dd command.

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows 7 Install On 2nd Hard Drive Not Seen By Grub In Maverick / Show That?

Jan 23, 2011

I've just installed a second hard drive in my laptop with windows 7 on one drive and Ubuntu on the other. I selected the side-by-side install in the Ubuntu install and let Ubuntu do the rest. Unfortunately Grub isn't seeing the windows install even after reconfiguring grub. However, the windows 7 drive is visible in Ubuntu and all the windows files are there intact.

Does anyone know how I can make grub see Windows 7 so I can boot into it?

Ubuntu :: First Time Install - Hard Drive Not Visible?

Feb 22, 2011

I used unetbootin to put ubuntu 10.10 on a 2 gb usb key. I started up using the "try before installing" option and when I try to install in full it says I do not have 2.5 free gb's for the install. So I open up gparted only to find that only drive there is my 2bg usb key and I have no idea how to find my main hard drive.

I tried searching and tried the following; I checked the sata setting in the boot menu and it is IDE. The computer has also never been used in a raid setup.

OpenSUSE Install :: Not Mess Up GRUB And Still Add Windows 98 To GRUB Menu?

Apr 27, 2010

I have a used PC that came pre-installed with suse 11.2.Unfortunately, I do not have the install disk to use in case of whatever.I already know that when configuring a dual boot with Windows and Linux, it is recommended to install Windows first.I do not have that luxury now as 11.2 is installed and GRUB is the boot loader.Question is, if I boot the Windows 98 install disk on boot, how to not mess up GRUB and still add Windows 98 to GRUB menu?

One hard drive only here. 98gb free.It seems that W98 install will overwrite GRUB in this situation - causing problems. Maybe not, I don't really know for sure.I just need to install windows 98 on the same hard drive and if possible, have suse and w98 visible on boot in GRUB.

Installation :: GRUB On USB Drive - Boot Into Windows

May 6, 2010

I installed Ubuntu on a portable usb drive using a live CD. But now my computer NEEDS the USB plugged in in order to access the GRUB on it so I can boot into Windows from my hard drive. If I boot up my computer without the USB drive plugged in my computer gives me the prompt "Rescue grub" with the ability to type stuff in. I tried to use F12 on startup of my computer in order to tell it to boot using my hard drive (where my Windows 7 is installed) but still no luck.

If the USB drive is plugged in at start up, I get a neat little menu giving me a choice of booting into either Ubuntu, Windows 7, or the memory test. And all of that works fine. Basically, the problem is, I want to boot into Windows without needing that darn USB drive having to be plugged in when I start my computer.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Dual Booting SL6.1 And Windows - After Editing The Grub.config To Include Windows

Jul 2, 2011

i am having some issues with dual booting my SL6.1 and Windows. The situation is that i recently acquired an old hard drive from a non-working computer of mine with Windows already installed (i know the windows is functional, as i tested it on my new PC with SL6.1 currently installed & everything runs fine)

The problem is that after editing the grub.config to include windows, windows will no longer boot after an attempt to install a legit version of McAffee anti-virus software which coincidently was only after the first attempt at running both OS's in a dual-boot fashion. Except past the windows start up screen before the dreaded blue-screen.
Which is weird because SL6.1 OS will still boot & works perfectly fine like always, so it doesn't really make sense.

My current setup is:
Disk 1: Solid-State:
Boot Partition
SL6 LVM1: Root Partition
Disk 2: Hard Drive:
SL6 LVM2: User, Temp & Swap Space Partitions (Different LVM to Root)
Disk 3: Hard Drive:
Windows 7 Professional 64-bit

My guess is its windows MBR. The reason i say this is because the Hard Drive contents of the Windows software still appears intact when accessing the drive from the Linux OS. I don't won't to go through the rigmarole of re-installing both OS's. So hopefully their is a relatively simple solution.

Debian :: How To Get Persistence - No Grub On Install Drive

Apr 5, 2010

I am using this image of Debian: [URL]. But it doesn't matter what I do I fail to make it persistent.
I have tried this: [URL] But there is no "grub" on my "install" drive, apparently is an outdated notion.
I have tried this: [URL] (with conflicting info regarding the previous link). By booting with a knoppix USB with gparted. Doesn't matter if I leave the NTFS partition unnamed or call it home_rw, I get no persistence, even writing persistent while booting.
I have tried also changing this (while in knoppix): [URL]. Basically adding the word "persistent" after "live" but it does not work. All changes I make disappear. What it the current way of getting persistence with this package?

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Won't Install On Right Drive Not Going Onto (hd1)

Feb 4, 2010

I'm trying to install ubuntu on a portable 30 gig hard drive. My BIOS does support USB booting. I've tried installing it a few times now. I clean the drive out so its all unallocated space. Then I boot from the disk and choose the second hard drive in the advanced tab.

I tried everything. It says sda for my internal drive and sdb for my external. When I choose sdb it is definitely not on the internal drive...but it won't boot.

This is the latest ubuntu I'm trying to install.

When I am finished it says USB contains no boot file or something like that and skips to windows 7.
