I am running 6 servers on RHEL4.4 with oracle databases and application on HP ML370 hardware. Since initial installation, I have not applied any patch updates. I would like to start practising Patch Management and would like to know how to start and how to do it. For security reasons, I am not allowed to connect the servers to RHN or RHS hence will appreciate other options of acquiring patch updates in bundled form say on a monthly basis.

Pardon me while I make a comparison to Solaris. I am in no way stating Solaris is better. It just happens to be my baseline of experience.In Solaris, I can download Cluster Patch Updates (CPU). So if I build a Solaris box with a CD that is a year or more old, I can download the latest CPU and get the box patched up to date, and from that point on sneaker-net patches as they appear.

The Host Operating System is Windows 2003 Enterprise, which has VMware Server 2.0.2 installed. Under the VMware Server 2.0.2 I have a Ubuntu 32-bit OS web server running Apache2 Web Services. When I log onto the Ubuntu server (9.10 32-bit) I see the following two lines just above the new mail/last logon lines.

I would like to see at least a summary of each update and its urgency so I can notify the various developers/server owners to get their input regarding whether we should or should not apply that particular update to the server. We apply the patches in our test/dev environment first then once vetted there we roll them out to our production servers. What I am looking for is a way to automate the gathering of the information and once approval has been received automating the actual patching process so that I do not have to manually perform the apt-get process for each separate package needed/approved.
Ideally I would like a recommendation for a GUI based package to manage this process and that is capable of generating the appropriate reports for the 'powers that be' regarding the current security/patch management environment. For proof of concept I would like a free version that is not hamstrung in functionality but is not too costly to procure the production version with no limitations.
In a small network (with <5 PCs) what is the best way to manage users and groups? When I create a new user, Ubuntu automatically assigned a UID unless I specify otherwise. If I were to mount shared drives between PCs (or between a client machine and a server) I'm wondering how it handles different UIDs/GIDs associated with files (usernames almost always match across system but UIDs/GIDs do not)? Or is the best solution to just assign matching UID and GID on every machine when they are created? Or is this just magically handled via the matching usernames? I know there are heavier options but this has come up a number of times in small setups 2-5 machines at most.

View 6 Replies View RelatedWhat could block access from Fedora to just one Windows XP system without blocking access to or from other Windows systems on the network? I have a working Windows network with six computers and one network-attached-storage. Two of the computers (MARTIN and NANCY) are Windows XP, the rest are older. I set up a Fedora laptop with Samba. The Fedora system can access the Internet (I'm using it to post this message). It can see all the Windows systems, and it can open all of them except MARTIN. The firewall on MARTIN is turned off.
I go to Places, Network, and I see nine icons: the Fedora system, seven Windows systems and one for Windows Network. If I double-click on the MARTIN icon I get a message window that says "Unable to mount location" and "Failed to retrieve share list from server". If I double-click on any of the other Windows icons, including NANCY, a new window opens showing the shares on that system. Similar results with smbclient. It shows the shares for all systems except MARTIN. For MARTIN it says "Connection to MARTIN failed (Error NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL)."
The other Windows computers on the network can open the shares on MARTIN with no problem. The network is partly wired and partly wireless. The wireless network is secured with WEP. The Fedora laptop is (as you might expect) wireless. The Fedora laptop is an emachines E520 and both Windows XP machines are custom-built tower systems. I don't think that information is relevant but I mention it anyway. What should I look for?
I need to deploy Windows Server 2008 R2 onto a server that is currently running Linux. Effectively, I want to restore a Windows disk image onto the Linux system hard disk.I don't have physical access to the machine, so I need to find a way to do everything remotely, using SSH (no KVM). And the Linux machine only has one hard disk - the one containing the OS. However, I might be able to create a partition in free space at the end of the hard disk to store the image (I might need some help with the Linux commands). Or perhaps the image file can be pulled via FTP.
I tried Acronis but was disappointed to find that it doesn't seem to allow me to overwrite the system partition (unlike the Windows version of Acronis, which is capable of doing this with a restart).

we are having new printers. At the moment we over 1000 machines on multiple sites but no print server they are manually added on the machine ( I know don't ask).
Anyway there is no way they would let use a windows server so the only option I have is to use linux however I little unsure if it is capable of doing the job I need it to do. Basically I want to add the printers on the linux server either using samba or ipp (I would assume samba would be best).
The reason i want to do this is when we have to do around the machines I just want to go around the machines and just the map the printer and it brings down the driver and config etc as we want them to duplex. The issue is I been trying to gain information on the internet and getting conflicting information apparently I can add the windows driver onto the server so when I map the printer it brings it down. However some guides state you still have through the whole process of adding the printer and then choosing the driver etc. Which kinda of makes it pointless to do the printer server since I would already have to do this anyway if we don't have one.
I just want to go be able to go around the machines and for example click star run and do something like \192.168.1.1printer01 and then it done kind of thing.

I have never done anything like this and I am a Linux newbie, so I would appreciate a "Kernel Patching for Dummies" version if possible. I did do a search on this forum and most of what I read was over my head. I found an FAQ on kernelnewbies.org on "How To Apply A Patch" but when I attempted what they suggested, it said it couldn't find the file to patch at line 5 and asked me which file to patch. Is there a way to reset the yum database so that it can go and re-apply the patches that have already been installed?
I have a Fedora 12 with the latest patches, and I managed to screw up some files or delete some files to the point where all I have now is the Fedora splash screen when I reboot.
I can get to single-user mode, and the thinking is that if I can get yum to ignore the latest patches that are already installed and pull down and re-install the latest patches, then whatever files that are corrupt or missing will be put back.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been running tomcat as a web server for quite a while. One particular application requires OpenOffice to be up a server for document conversion. Under Fedora 14 (and NOT before), I had to add Xvfb to the mix so OpenOffice could run properly headless. I have a script to start/stop/restart tomcat (S99tomcat) which has been working flawlessly until I did the most recent updates to Fedora. The script still works fine (S99tomcat start) at boot time. However when I invoke stop and then start it due to an application change (or just restart) - openoffice fails to come up whining about xrand
Here is the line I use to bring up OpenOffice
/usr/lib64/openoffice.org3/program/soffice -nologo -headless -accept=socket,host=localhost,port=9999,tcpNoDelay= 1;urp;StarOffice.ServiceManager
It took a lot of research to get the above right (open office parameters are sensitive to order on the command line and quotes need to be put around the parameters as there is a semicolon embedde in the accept parameters.
Anyway - here is the new error

If I reboot the machine this same command set will run fine. This just happened when I applied the newest patches for all my software (normally I do this weekly).
Tried out the latest Fedora 13 release for kicks, and seem to be liking it so far I'm an openSUSE user and created some RPMs (on openSUSE) for myself which have the Ubuntu font rendering patches in them. I played around with the Fedora RPMs and managed to patch freetype-freeworld, cairo, fontconfig and Xfto achieve subpixel hinting on par with Ubuntu I wanted to share them with the Fedora community, if interested. Is there any place like an openSUSE Build Service for Fedora where I can host them...or maybe some community site that can host them? A screenshot of my desktop:
