Fedora :: Reset Yum To Re-install Patches?

Jan 29, 2010

Is there a way to reset the yum database so that it can go and re-apply the patches that have already been installed?

I have a Fedora 12 with the latest patches, and I managed to screw up some files or delete some files to the point where all I have now is the Fedora splash screen when I reboot.

I can get to single-user mode, and the thinking is that if I can get yum to ignore the latest patches that are already installed and pull down and re-install the latest patches, then whatever files that are corrupt or missing will be put back.

Fedora :: Unable To Reset Using Either The Reset Option In Gnome Shell Or The Command Using A Terminal?

Jun 3, 2011

I'm unable to reset using either the reset option in gnome shell or the command using a terminal. When I select it the shell exits and displays the graphic "exploding" and then it just sits there. Shutdown works fine; just no reset. Any ideas? I've installed from the DVD. I booted the live CD and it resets just fine so I know it's no my hardware

OpenSUSE Install :: How To Select Relevant Patches

Oct 2, 2010

Near the end of the install, a panel lists dozens of patches, some categorized as "Security", others as "Recommended", each preceded by a checkbox. I started to check all of the patches, but then noticed that the checks were bringing in software I had not requested -- e.g., checking an emacs patch brought in emacs. Rather than bring in all of this additional software, I left all patches unchecked. Now I need to know how I can go back and apply only the patches that pertain to software that I have actually installed.

I'd also like to know whether there is some way to limit the install program panel to relevant patches only.

OpenSUSE Install :: KDE Login On 11.4 Fails (after Installing Patches)

May 22, 2011

I m try to explain the structure I tried to use here:Symptoms: Describes what is happening right now What happened: Describes the history leading to the problem My tries so far: Describes, what I did (so far in vain) to clean up the problem Questions: I already searched the forum (see "My tries so far") but missed to write down the URLs for the threads. (So they aren't mentioned under "My tries so far")

Symptoms: The system boots up ok, I get to the KDE login, but for both my user account and the root account, the login fails. After entering username and password a progressbar comes up. This gets to 3/4 (if I counted the steps correctly) then stops. If I wait for several minutes, the screen will finally just turn black. (It is *not* switched to suspend or somesuch by DPMS; I didn't wait for that turning black in all tries described below) I can login on a console into the system.

System Intel CPU Core2, E6750 Suse 11.4, 64 Bit (both original and backup system) Kernel: Linux 2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop x86_64 (backup system) / vmlinuz-2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop (original system) KDE: 4.6.00 (4.6.0) "release 6" (on the the backup system, because I don't know how it get the info as long as I can't login to KDE)

After just over 3 hours the build exhausted the 5.2GB I had available and fell over. The .config file used was nearly twice the size of the one I supplied. Why was it changed?I don't need an rpm.Are the patches supplied with the 2.6.38 sources required or nice to have?

Fedora X86/64bit :: Unable To Use 14 (64) Newest Patches With RANDR?

Jun 13, 2011

I have been running tomcat as a web server for quite a while. One particular application requires OpenOffice to be up a server for document conversion. Under Fedora 14 (and NOT before), I had to add Xvfb to the mix so OpenOffice could run properly headless. I have a script to start/stop/restart tomcat (S99tomcat) which has been working flawlessly until I did the most recent updates to Fedora. The script still works fine (S99tomcat start) at boot time. However when I invoke stop and then start it due to an application change (or just restart) - openoffice fails to come up whining about xrand

Here is the line I use to bring up OpenOffice
/usr/lib64/openoffice.org3/program/soffice -nologo -headless -accept=socket,host=localhost,port=9999,tcpNoDelay= 1;urp;StarOffice.ServiceManager

It took a lot of research to get the above right (open office parameters are sensitive to order on the command line and quotes need to be put around the parameters as there is a semicolon embedde in the accept parameters.

Anyway - here is the new error

Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":1.0".
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":1.0".
Xvfb is running on Display ":1"

If I reboot the machine this same command set will run fine. This just happened when I applied the newest patches for all my software (normally I do this weekly).

Fedora :: Subpixel Font Rendering For FC13 (Ubuntu Patches)?

May 27, 2010

Tried out the latest Fedora 13 release for kicks, and seem to be liking it so far I'm an openSUSE user and created some RPMs (on openSUSE) for myself which have the Ubuntu font rendering patches in them. I played around with the Fedora RPMs and managed to patch freetype-freeworld, cairo, fontconfig and Xfto achieve subpixel hinting on par with Ubuntu I wanted to share them with the Fedora community, if interested. Is there any place like an openSUSE Build Service for Fedora where I can host them...or maybe some community site that can host them? A screenshot of my desktop:

How do I set my centos system to the configuration it had directly after the installation? Because there are so many messed up tings on here right now, firefox will only work with my proxy server if I put its IP directly into firefox but not if I put its IP into the system proxy settings and then point firefox at that. httpd refuses to serve up any kind of documen apart from the test page randomly and even then I sometimes get a 403 error. Seriously is this the normal practice for setting up a LAMP server???

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.1 - Boot System Forces Hard Reset

May 6, 2009

I'm new to Linux, tried Ubuntu, had slow boot problems, tried openSUSE 11.1, still have slow boot problems. The issue seems to be that the ata.0 device is slow to respond (ERROR= -16), the boot system forces a hard reset, then a soft reset, configures for UDMA 133, says the drive is ready, then does it again, three times, and then configures the drive for UDMA 100. It's a brand new Western Digital Caviar drive, and windowsXP likes it just fine. Once SUSE boots, everything seems to work just fine. I thought the problem might be with the drive jumpers, so I reset them from cable detect to master/single. No change in the problem.

After each update, I have to go into Configure Desktop->Login manager and set my background picture again. Why is this happening? Is there a way to fix this?

I am running Suse 11.3, KDE v4.4.4.

Fedora :: How To Reset Gnome Desktop

Oct 24, 2009

I created a separate /home partition to share between F10 and F11. And, of course, the gnome settings conflict. I really don't need to go back to F10 and when I install F12 over it I will omit including the separate /home directory during the install set up and that will force F12 to create the /home Dir on the same file system. So, to clear up gnome settings for now, is the only way mean deleting the .gconf, .gnome* directories? This was recommended in another post back a few years ago.

I suspect there is another file somewhere making it think its ready to upgrade when it really isn't Any help locating it or know what the problem is appreciated.I tried to upgrade off of DVD, but that resulted in the very first RPM saying it is corrupt, even though media check and imgburn/verify said if was OK.

Fedora Servers :: Reset SQL Root Password

I am trying to set up a webserver with apache, mysql and php on a old pentrium 4 computer. When I tried to setup my MySQL password, I created a password with punctuation in it. MySQL didn't want the password and gave some error about BASH. I tried changing my password again but now I constantly get the error that I am unable to login. I tried all the possibilities with the password I entered before but i just can't login to MySQL anymore. I found some help sites on how to reset your password by running MySQL in the safe mode but that didn't work for me. Can anyone help me resetting my password? Next time i'll use a pass without punctuation Every help is much appreciated! BTW, I also tried uninstalling MySQL with yum (yum remove mysql) and it uninstalled, but when I installed it again the password was still there
