OpenSUSE :: Dell's KACE Patch Management Agent (kboxagent)
Mar 24, 2011
I have received a task to install Dell's KACE patch management agents (kboxagent) on a large number of 11.2 and 11.4 openSuSE systems in our organization A search of the forum did not find any references for KACE. Has anyone had any expierence with the KACE product on openSuSE?Google searches only find ver 5.1 of KACE for RH systems. Is this version compatible with all Linux's?

I'm at ES5. Anyone have a method for roll out or backing a single RPM or set of RPMs. In other words, I install the security errata (several packages) and it breaks something. I need to back it out, and restore the original. Also, anyone have experience using Red Hat provisioning for patch management?

How do we perform offline patch management with Debian? This isn't a question about which tools to use on Debian to load the patch once it is on a CD and transferred to said offline computer via sneaker net. More, how do I keep said offline (or strictly firewalled) computer in synch?
Pardon me while I make a comparison to Solaris. I am in no way stating Solaris is better. It just happens to be my baseline of experience. In Solaris, I can download Cluster Patch Updates (CPU). So if I build a Solaris box with a CD that is a year or more old, I can download the latest CPU and get the box patched up to date, and from that point on sneaker-net patches as they appear.

I've inherited the following Virtual Machine scenario and am new to Linux Administration and Patch Management. The Host Operating System is Windows 2003 Enterprise, which has VMware Server 2.0.2 installed. Under the VMware Server 2.0.2 I have a Ubuntu 32-bit OS web server running Apache2 Web Services. When I log onto the Ubuntu server (9.10 32-bit) I see the following two lines just above the new mail/last logon lines.
85 packages can be updated
55 updates are security updates
I would like to see at least a summary of each update and its urgency so I can notify the various developers/server owners to get their input regarding whether we should or should not apply that particular update to the server. We apply the patches in our test/dev environment first then once vetted there we roll them out to our production servers. What I am looking for is a way to automate the gathering of the information and once approval has been received automating the actual patching process so that I do not have to manually perform the apt-get process for each separate package needed/approved.
Ideally I would like a recommendation for a GUI based package to manage this process and that is capable of generating the appropriate reports for the 'powers that be' regarding the current security/patch management environment. For proof of concept I would like a free version that is not hamstrung in functionality but is not too costly to procure the production version with no limitations.

I am running 6 servers on RHEL4.4 with oracle databases and application on HP ML370 hardware. Since initial installation, I have not applied any patch updates. I would like to start practising Patch Management and would like to know how to start and how to do it. For security reasons, I am not allowed to connect the servers to RHN or RHS hence will appreciate other options of acquiring patch updates in bundled form say on a monthly basis.

I'm running Karmic on a Dell Mini 10v (Intel Atom) netbook, generally with very few problems and I've been happy with it. Recently I've had problems with suspend and wake when I close / open the lid - wicd no longer finding any networks, password prompt no longer appears, that sort of thing. A few days ago an icon popped up in the panel which appeared to do nothing, but mousing over it provided the following message:
"Session active, not inhibited, screen idle. If you can see this text, your display server is broken and you should notify your distributor. [URL]..Following the link, the blog of Richard Hughes appears to quite carefully describe the issue and then provides a patch (or two). However, being rather a n00b I have no idea what to do with either of the blocks of code he supplies - "man patch" in my terminal brings up "no manual entry for patch".

Has anyone had this issue? Tonight, when I started KMail I got a crash of the Akonadi maildir resource agent. Everything was fine in the morning, I didn't change anything or mess about, just a normal session. The crash report will go away if I close it 5 times or so. I have seen the problem in a couple of fora, apparently the best workaround is to rename the relevant file in /usr/bin (the file named akonadi_maildir_resource). Kmail is now functioning properly (I gather it is not yet fully integrated with Akonadi, so it shouldn't matter too much). I would like to know if anyone else has had this problem, and any solutions you might have.
I tried submitting a bug report via the automated process; unfortunately, when I tried downloading the debug tools I got stuck on an error in downloading the repo data from the update repository:
PackageKit Error repo-not-available: Failed to download ./repodata/cefcc9d56264aa169f70a53c560ffc39cb6af575-deltainfo.xml.gz from Index of /update/11.3
I assume the repo update issue is a temporary mistake in the update process? Send me any thoughts on the akonadi issue, please!

I have seen a lot of threads here and on others forums about problems with these models. I have a regular seagate portable that works great. The threads are all 2009 and older, so I was wondering if anyone could confirm that the free agent go portable models work before I buy one. Especially with 11.3. I can get a 640GB for $99.

I just want to upgrade my Slackware 13.1 kernel (2.6.33.4) to the latest stable kernel from kernel.org (2.6.38.2). I have never done anything like this and I am a Linux newbie, so I would appreciate a "Kernel Patching for Dummies" version if possible. I did do a search on this forum and most of what I read was over my head. I found an FAQ on kernelnewbies.org on "How To Apply A Patch" but when I attempted what they suggested, it said it couldn't find the file to patch at line 5 and asked me which file to patch. So I CTRL-Z'd out of there and came here. Here's what I tried:

This card has been the bane of my existence for a while. In the old days I could get it to work with Fedora using a generic video driver. A friend recommended OpenSuse because of my love for KDE.
The good news is that install went greeeeat. But after that, I once again got a black screen with a line randomly done it. Is there a way to change? I tried changing those resolution options but it didn't work. I have the Windoze driver from Dell's site. Its Dell Inspiron 5160.

I've a friend who would like to install openSUSE 11.3. But due to a bad Internet connectivity he cannot download the updates and the extra softwares. So I was thinking if it was possible to create a patch and a software cd for him which could then be used as a repository in YaST ?

I have SuSE 11.2. There is a security patch for Mozilla NSS Library. However, I get told by YaST that the libfreebl3-3241.noarch conflicts with mozilla-nspr.i586. (There's also a patch for glibc but apparently, it is not "willing" to install this without installing the other patch first). Anyway, I did the following: zypper lp and then rpm -qi libfreebl3 and then zypper lr -d.
Here are the results:
Code:
zypper lp
Repository 'Updates for openSUSE 11.2-0' is out-of-date. You can run 'zypper refresh' as root to update it.
Loading repository data...
Reading installed packages.....
Code:
zypper refresh
Repository '11.2' is up to date.
Repository 'Education' is up to date.
Repository 'Printing' is up to date.
Retrieving repository 'games' metadata [done]
Building repository 'games' cache [done]
Retrieving repository 'Updates for openSUSE 11.2-0' metadata [done]
Building repository 'Updates for openSUSE 11.2-0' cache [done]
Repository 'mozilla/openSUSE_11.2' is up to date.
Repository 'openSUSE-11.2-Non-Oss' is up to date.
Repository 'openSUSE-11.2-Oss' is up to date.
All repositories have been refreshed. I don't know what to do. In order to update FireFox, (on Aug 1, 2010) I had to do as posted in this thread: (instructions by caf4926) Updating firefox. So, I followed these directions: ImageBam - Fast, Free Image Hosting and Photo Sharing. Now what do I do?

I get following error during automatic patch upgrade of my SuSE 11.2 to latest path revision. I assume it is due to the KDE 4.3.5 Update part of the patch set: compiz-kde4-0.7.8-9.14.x86_64 requires libkdecorations.so.4()(64 bit) but there are no providers. The package manager suggest to replace compiz-kde4-0.7.8-9.14.x86_64 with kwin-4.3.5-0.2.1.x86_64 but I don't want to loose compiz-kde. which repository I must add to resolve the dependency.

I am impressed with 11.4 and am happy that for the first time ever I don't need to install a kernel patch to support my on-board nVidia graphics. However, the on-board sound no longer works now. I don't know how to set it up in phonon. My device number 0 in phonon is MCP72XE/MCP72P/MCP78U/MCP78S high definition audio, and I assume this is my nVidia on-board sound card. The driver information states snd-hda-intel.
How can I check what is wrong with it? It did work fine on 11.2 right up to the 11.4 installation. I do get system sounds (like the start-up and shut-down sounds), but nothing from any application, e.g., firefox playing a video. Based on the advice from another thread I tried: speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twav This does not produce any sound, but gives the following information: speaker-test 1.0.24.2
Playback device is default
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 2 channels
WAV file(s)
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 96 to 1048576
Period size range from 32 to 349526

now VLC is back again in Packman repos, but ... now I've got this issue:
Code:
#### YaST2 conflicts list - generated 2011-05-13 07:58:10 ####
patch:gstreamer-0_10-plugin-hal-4496.noarch conflicts with gstreamer-0_10-plugins-good-lang.noarch < 0.10.28-1.2.1 provided by gstreamer-0_10-plugins-good-lang-0.10.28-1.pm.40.3.noarch
[code]....
is it safe to apply this patch through "vendor change", but immediately after redo "switch system packages to packman"?
