I am looking for a server solution that would allow me to deploy Windows Desktops and software to clients on the network. Ideally I am looking for a Linux server solution but would consider a Windows Open Source alternative.
In the past I have used Symantec Altiris Deployment Server.
I would like to know how to deploy an ACL (ACCESS CONTROL LIST) on Ubuntu 9.10 server, because "apt-get install acl" is not responding.

Therefore, I am looking for something to replace Active Directory. I know there are software for eacho prupose (BIND for DNS, But I would like to have a central tool with integration between services as Active Directory can provide.
The services I need are:
- DHCP
- DNS
- Directory for central authentication (workstations are not on stand alone)
- File shares
- Binary repository for upgrade (as WSUS on Windows)
- NTP
We have to install centos 5.5 in approx 60 servers and we want to have a server in which we can create an image of 1 server and deploy it on all other severs through pxe. Mainly all servers will be having raid 5 or raid 1 configured. So the utility should be having the raid support.

I need to deploy Windows Server 2008 R2 onto a server that is currently running Linux. Effectively, I want to restore a Windows disk image onto the Linux system hard disk.I don't have physical access to the machine, so I need to find a way to do everything remotely, using SSH (no KVM). And the Linux machine only has one hard disk - the one containing the OS. However, I might be able to create a partition in free space at the end of the hard disk to store the image (I might need some help with the Linux commands). Or perhaps the image file can be pulled via FTP.
I tried Acronis but was disappointed to find that it doesn't seem to allow me to overwrite the system partition (unlike the Windows version of Acronis, which is capable of doing this with a restart).

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to mount the home directories of the users on the server to the respective desktops. I would like to use the libpam-mount module. do you guys know, how make it run? I am using 9.10 both server and desktop and the most recent pam-mount module. I know that the /etc/security/pam_mount.conf.xml needs to be edited. I added the following to it:

I now have 2 desktops running debian. I have virtual servers running in desktop 1, and I am hosting my photos using Gallery2. I have copied Gallery2 and the mysql over to desktop 2. I have entered port forward to desktop 1 using port 80 (using my router), and desktop 2 using port 1000. I can only access Gallery2 in desktop1. If I tried to access Gallery2 in desktop 2, I got re-directed to desktop1.
Questions:
1. Are home routers capable of port forward to more than one computers in a home network behind the firewall of the router? It is Belkin N+ router.
2. Can multiple virtual servers be setup in 2 desktops?
Does anyone know of any decent enterprise level backup solutions for Linux? I need to backup a few servers and a bunch of desktops onto one backup server. Using rsync/tar.gz won't cut it. I need like bi-monthly full HDD backups, and things such as that, with a nice GUI interface to add/remove systems from the backup list. I need basically something similar to CommVault or Veritas. Veritas I've used before but it has its issues, such as leaving 30GB cache files. CommVault, I have no idea how much it is, and if it supports backing up to a hard drive rather than tape.

I basically want to ape OSX and have an expose-like button, the screen edge works fine for now, but I would love a keyboard shortcut also. Is it possible? Also, when I set up a custom keyboard shortcut to run yast, I initially tried using the same command from the KDE menu: /usr/bin/xdg-su -c /sbin/yast2
However, when I use the keyboard shortcut to launch this command, I get problems when trying to use zypper after the initial launch using the keyboard shortcut(from yast GUI or CLI). The error basically states another instance of yast2 already exists. The problem is only with the app/repo management modules though; for instance I can launch yast (using keyboard shortcut or start menu) and access hardware info, sudo users etc, I just can't access software/repo management stuff. Even when I kill the offending PID from the CLI I still get the error and have to restart the box to rectify it proper. So I changed the keyboard shortcut command to : /usr/bin/kdesu /sbin/yast2
and this seems to have resolved the problem. My second question is what is the difference between the two in this particular instance and why does one cause problems (xdg-su) and the other does not (kdesu).

I work for an independent school where most of our computers run Windows 7 and Mac OS X. I've started installing Ubuntu (11.04) on some of our older machines, thus introducing Linux to our environment and recycling computers which would otherwise be candidates for the garbage truck. While I am familiar with imaging and deploying Windows and Mac OS, I am lost when it comes to Linux. I have set up a computer with all of the settings and applications that I would like the other computers to have. how can I image that reference machine and then transfer that image onto another PC?

created a myapps folder inside the tomcat directory, and copied the WAR file there.
These are the questions:
1. I did not touch anything inside the Tomcat folder, anything need to be changed?.
2.How to start the Tomcat so that it can deploy th e WAR file?
I've created a live cd with wubuntu.iso on it and am having trouble getting it to deploy on another laptop. Is there another file in the remastersys folder that needs to be added so it will auto deploy? This is part of remastersys creation for cloning your system to deploy on another laptop/pc.

The idea ls command that would find *.gz files in the current dir,then it outputs the errors to ./tmp.txt, if there were no errors = a tar.gz archive found,tmp.txt will be blank,hence the cat command that checks the file. The wrong - I couldn`t succeed with the "cat 'tmp.txt' == '' ;" ,as cat command searches == as a file and it fails.
