Ubuntu :: Gnome 3 Windows Decorations/windows Management?
Apr 9, 2011I just installed Gnome 3 shell on Ubuntu 11.04 natty and everything seems to look fine except my windows decorations. May be something simple I'm missing.

View 9 RepliesI installed today debian wheezy from OpenSUSE system via bootstrap. I have some strange behaviour with kde. At first kde worked fine and the only problem was that if I tried to logout from kde session, instead of kdm shows up, a black screen appear with mouse cursor working. I first ignore this error(because I had some problems with audio) and just reboot from vt console or sometimes restart kdm service. After I solved the audio problem I've searched to find some solution about kdm black screen problem. I found on kde forums a solution about terminate xserver option on kdmrc file, which didn't work in my case, but create another problem.
The problem is that now when I pass the mouse cursor from windows topbars I have glitches on window decorations. So I disable the above option again, reboot but the graphics problems was still there. I tried to uncheck vsync from desktom effects and the resault was all desktop effects to be disabled. Now I cannot re-enable desktop effects any more. But now I can logout and relogin. 3D works fine(glxgears works) but I cannot enable desktop effects. And I think that some effects work, because I see some smooth movements and fade outs when I pass the mouse cursor on kmenu items. My card is ATI radeon HD 4650, and I have the xorg-video-ati driver installed.
I usually have many windows open when I use Ubuntu, and I find it tedious to manage them with the mouse. Is it possible to configure the Windows key so I can call specific, open windows to the screen? Suppose I have Nautilus and a terminal open for example, and suppose Nautilus is "first" (that is: to the far left) on the window bar in the bottom of the screen, and that the terminal is to the right of it. Can I then configure the Windows key so that if I press [WINDOW]+[1], I call the first window to the front (Nautilus), and if I press [WINDOW]+[2] I call the terminal window to the front? It would be very neat if I could do this somehow or in a another intuitive way.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm a photographer and use Windows to run Adobe CS for most of my photography tasks, but sometimes I need to do editing in Ubuntu, the environment I use on a daily basis. However the image editing/manager programs I use just don't seem to work properly in Natty, so even for a quick RAW edit of one image, I end up pulling my hair out whilst in Ubuntu:
RAWTherapy
- Refuses to load folder contents after clicking on them
- Once I got as far as opening a RAW file, and then RT crashed. I've never been able to open up a RAW image since then
Digicam
- Managed to open folder contents and selected a few thumbnails but when trying to upload to flickr, it crashes
Flickr Uploader
- No option to create a new set (OK, maybe not a Unity issue but annoying all the same)
Any Upload Window
- when trying to upload an image to flickr, or to my blog, I cannot view my images in thumbnail view. So if I am searching for a specific image to upload I can only do so by image name. This is ridiculous. I have attempted to flag this up in a past thread and did not receive a response on this. Since this is the one action I do the most, I get constantly frustrated with having to open Nautilus, learn the image name, then locate it when in the upload window.
- When uploading to flickr the upload window increases to about 150% width of my screen, so I have to horizontally scroll to the 'upload' button after selecting my images
Thumbnail View
- Loading up image thumbnails in Nautilus is painfully slow. Windows is much faster.
- Increasing the thumbnail size to 200% is useless. It is not 200% of the original image size, but just 200% of the thumbnail. I can't view any larger than this 200% figure. Useless.
- When viewing thumbnails in Nautilus, it doesn't double up column view as I reduce the size of the thumbnails, they remain in just one column irrespective of the thumbnail size, culminating in loads of white space either side of the thumbnail
The Gimp
- I'm not going to slag The Gimp off because I understand it is an on-going project supported by just two developers and they have done a marvellous effort. It is very different from Photoshop but this is digressing from my main issues.
With these fundamental flaws in Unity/Ubuntu, I end up booting up Windows and working in my Adobe Creative Suite instead, which is a pain when I want to edit just a couple of images.
I was always led to believe that Linux was 'faster' than Windows but from my experience it is not the best environment for image editing. Nautilus is much slower than Windows Explorer and Digicam is a ridiculously complicated file manager on steroids. Adobe Bridge runs far fast in Windows 7 than Digicam does in Natty, which surprises me. I was recommended RawTherapy but this was by a Windows user who clearly doesn't experience the basic problems I have been running into whilst in Ubuntu.
Do any other photographers have these issues, or any others for that matter? More importantly, are there any work-arounds to these problems? I'd be interested to hear from serious photographers (editing and managing up to 1,000 images a month) who spend a lot of hours processing and managing their photographs. I don't know of any other serious photographers who use Linux: they all use Macs or Windows.
After installing opensuse 11.4 (64bit- gnome 2), enabling compiz effects makes windows' decorations disappear.
I can solve this by doing
gtk-window-manager --replace
but I have to do this every log in.
Is there any computer management software like Cafe123 for Windows? Some friends of mine tried to reduce the cost for setting up computers by making one of the counter/server using Linux, instead of using Windows. And another reason that he want to avoid the counter server from being infected by malware such as those malware spread using usb drive. EDIT: Oh, I forgot to mention that, the server intended to use will be powered with Ubuntu, and the client computers will using Windows XP instead.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhenever i click on an icon in the Places pull down menu (except Computer, Network, Connect To Server and Search For Files) nothing happens except I get Ktorrent popping up and claiming it cant open the selected Drive or Folder because it is not a valid torrent file. Which is fair enough, 'cos its not a torrent. Its the entry for my Desktop in a pull down menu in my O/S, and it does this even when I haven't been near Ktorrent in the previous hundred clicks of the mouse, or if Ktorrent is not running. If i un-install Ktorrent, the error message changed, but the correct windows did not open when asked from the Places pull down, and the error returns when its re installed- well, tried it once, in a very basic fashion through the software center.
I think the problem has been caused by two containing folders of torrent data files that have become stuck as entrys in the Pllaces menu- cack handed off me folks, was playing with new mouse settings as I was playing with new mouse settings. Problem may also be something to do with the problems I have been having with Ktorrent- it refuses to accept torrent files unless through a magnet link, bringing up the same "parse error- not valid torrent file" error message as comes up from the Places menu, only of course citing the torrent i just tried, when I know for sure the file is valid and operational because Transmission has no problem with it.I really hope someone can help me fix this, as formatting and re-installing will be a real ball ache, as I'm a new user who's spent the last week learning and starting the customization process, and I was just getting to think about backing it all up.System is Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit, Pentium quad core, one 250Gb system drive and another larger drive called storage that appears under Media path both SATA2, no DVD drive as connector is in the post.
I have a 2 TB disk in an external SATA dock, formatted with a single ext3 (Linux) partition, which doesn't show up in the Windows 7 Computer Management->Disk Management utility, even as a raw/blank disk. I've verified that there's nothing wrong with the disk by connecting it to my Linux machine and mounting it, and I've verified that the dock is functioning properly by connecting a different FAT32-formatted disk, which mounts flawlessly as expected.I realize that I can't actually read the ext3 partition without additional software (e.g., Ext3IFS), but why doesn't the disk show up at all? Is there some sort of stupid anti-Linux filter built in? Is there any way to force Windows to recognize the disk, so that I can at the very least use direct block access with it?
Background: I want to clone an identical 2 TB disk onto this one. Due to my hardware layout, it's much easier to have the source disk attached to one machine and the destination disk connected to another, and do the clone over the network (the network is not a bottleneck with switched gigabit ethernet), than it is to hook them both up to one machine.(1) I did this once before when both machines were running Linux, but I've since upgraded the destination machine and decided to switch back to Windows for regular desktop use. I've got Cygwin installed, and have verified that the same basic method (dd + nc) will work, but I can't do anything if Windows doesn't even consider the destination disk to exist.I only have one eSATA port on each machine. Opening them up just to do this clone is a rather large annoyance. Also, since this is my backup disk, I'd like to eventually automate the cloning from the active disk to another one that I regularly swap with a third disk that I store off-site.
I just installed gnome-do on Kubuntu because I could not get launchy to function, but I can't get gnome-do to consistently appear above other windows even after applying the workaround on the gnome-do wiki for kde users.

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 in Virtual Box and while using Normal visual effects I get an odd problem with the windows. When a window touches the top or bottom Gnome panels it gets stuck there and I cannot move it away from the panel. Trying to drag the window causes the window to slowly slide to the right along the panel till it goes off the screen and finally pops free.If I turn visual effects to none the problem goes away leading me to conclude it is a problem with Compiz. Any ideas what is going wrong for me? It should be easily reproducible with the current Virtual Box software, Ubuntu 10.10 64bit desktop, and the repository versions of the Virtual Box guest additions.
View 5 Replies View RelatedSo I'm having a weird issue with Gnome 3 in Ubuntu 11.04 64-bit (daily-live 4.25.2011). Anyways here's the issue, some windows File Menu bar is like the classic GTK style and doesn't look anything like the other windows, even though its an updated version. For example this happens on Gnome Terminal (3.0) and Empathy (3.0) and Nautilus (3.0) and a few others, but Firefox is fine, etc.
View 4 Replies View RelatedUpgraded to 11.04, tried Unity for a month but hated it, reverted back to Gnome today, now I have no wobbly windows.
I've enabled WW in CCSM and all the settings are defaulted. I've tried removing all traces of Unity using synaptic, but it just doesn't seem to have made a difference.
I've read a few threads about this, but so far haven't seen a fix other than "it just started working", so any pointers or ideas would be great as it hasn't just started working for me.
Dell Latitude D620 with current nVidia proprietary driver installed.
I've just rolled out about 60 ubuntu 10.04 desktops. All of them are joined to our windows domain using likewiseopen.
At the gnome login screen, the users have to click "other" and type in their windows username and password.
Is there any way to bypass this and just have the username displayed?
I'm running Kubuntu 10.04 and GNOME-Do that I installed through KPackage. Why won't it open when there are windows visible? I hate having to minimize windows to use GNOME-Do.

I want to make gnome shell my default window manager. I have it installed, and can get it to run from the terminal with gnome-shell --replace.
the effects aren't permanent though. I tried setting gnome-shell to be a start up application but this hasn't worked. I dont want to remove compiz or metacity before knowing if I can get gnome-shell to run by default somehow.
So, how can I get gnome-shell to be my default windows manager?
I know Metacity has a flag which enables compositing, and draws shadows under windows. Thing is, I prefer shadows because it helps me distinguish stuff on the desktop - a sort of usability an readability feature for me. However, I don't know if my older Thinkpad is too slow to do compositing in X or Metacity code is not optimized enough (yet), but turning compositing on makes my desktop experience too sluggish for my tastes.
I know Windows XP did shadows without compositing big portions of the screen, and it worked fast enough even for the desktop computers of its day. Anyone knows what are my options here? I like GNOME and/or GTK (haven't though much about the important details here) and would like to keep it. Do I need to switch to Openbox or Fluxbox or something like that? I am on Ubuntu 10.04, Thinkpad T43 with Pentium-M 2.0Ghz, 1GB RAM.
ive recently switched from kde to gnome and am now using fedora 13. i really like some of the desktop features in kde where it had highlighted windows, transparent windows etc
with the latest versions of kde it was very easy as i just clicked "add themes" or "add splash screens" etc and it was all automated. im having a little more difficulty now that im a linux gnome noob.
I am trying to run X windows on CentOS with GNOME. When I first enter startx i get the message:
Fatal server error: Server is already active for display 0 If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start again.
Then I removed the .X0-lock file ran startx again and I got this message:
_XSERVTransSocketINETCreateListener: ...SocketCreateListener() failed _XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: server already running Fatal server error: Cannot establish any listening sockets - Make sure an X server isn't already running
Finally, I ran startx -- :1 and then it flashed a black screen with the X mouse cursor but a second later it just went right back to the desktop.
Is there a Gnome keyboard shortcut to show all open windows?I'm shamefully running the Macbuntu skin and this will finally give me UI nirvana.
View 9 Replies View RelatedThough I am Linux user for sometime I only recently started using Ubuntu (starting from 10.10). So far so good. Last week I was suggested by the update manager to upgrade to 11.04. I went for it. After the upgrade it worked nicely; I was so happy. It provided Mac like menus and stuffs. An auto hiding side bar. With overwhelming interest, I started paying around with it. In that process, I turned on the Compiz cube. It warned me that it was going to disable the compiz wall; I confirmed that. And that was it. I lost everything.
Now no keyboard shortcuts (like Ctrl+f4, Alt+f4, Alt+f1, Alt+f2, Alt+tab) work. No Window borders; no task bar. There was a blank desktop. All I could do was right click and get a context menu. With that I created a shortcut to run gnome-terminal, started the terminal, typed google-chrome and then typing this in the forum. As I said earlier, I do not have any short cut keys. I f I want to go back to the terminal, I have to close this browser. I can't move/resize windows.
I upgraded to 11.04 and now I get these occasional blank windows. Anyone have an idea on what is going on?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu desktop, since I had been running my server as Ubuntu Server on a guest OS on Windows 7 and never really used the Windows part of the computer. Since then, I've been unable to use the mouse in a graphical environment for longer than a few minutes without it starting to act crazy. The mouse moves around normally, but won't respond to clicks (left, middle, or right) but the keyboard shortcuts still work. I'm not sure if things have changed since I last used Gnome though, but Alt+Tab is not working for me either when this happens. Sometimes, the active window is even behind another window, and isn't pulled to the foreground.
After a bit of frustrated clicking and jamming of buttons on the keyboard, sometimes the mouse kind of starts working because I'll notice a right click menu open. But, I am still unable to move windows or click on them to bring them to the foreground, and my mouse presses only work on the current window. And then, eventually, after about a minute or so, it'll stop respond again too.
I saw in one thread that someone had dead spaces where he couldn't click, so he installed and ran Gnome and that fixed it, but I tried using Ubuntu Classic and it is still giving me the same behavior. I'm actually posting this message now in links, because I can't use Firefox or Chrome well enough when it's hidden behind other windows.
I installed Debian lenny 5.04 and facing an annoying problem in GNOME. When new window/applications are opened, it opens behind currently active window. I have to manually click task bar to open it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed Fedora 15 on a new laptop and I am using the Genome desktop. There are some applications that will not the allow you to resize the window. Some examples of this are Libre Calc, gnome-tweak-tool and a window in the package installer. In all these cases when you right mouse click on the top of the active window the "Resize ALT-F8" is grayed out and is not selectable. This is real problem when I'm trying to install the Perl-IDE-for-vim package because the list of dependencies is so long the confirm button is off the bottom of the screen and I cannot resize the window to get to it. There is also a similar issue with the tweak tool where some of the field are chopped off because the window is too small. As for Libre Calc I just don't like a window taking up the whole desktop.
