OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Use Remote Connections Like RDP And VNC To Both Windows Machines?

Aug 12, 2010

The geek-in-me won and I bought a spiffy little Acer Aspire One netbook, windows 7 starter installed. Now I take it to clients' workplaces instead of my 19" laptop (that I also bought because the geek-in-me won that time too).

So what do I install in the Suse/openSUSE range? I want a lightweight Linux, like Meego or openSUSE with a light Desktop. I need to be able to use remote connections like RDP and VNC to both Linux and windows machines, so maybe Meego can't do that? But maybe openSUSE with a very light Desktop will. I'll use gmail from the netbook, no need for Thunderbird etc. I like to have multimedia.

OpenSUSE :: Remote Desktop Connections & 11.2?

May 3, 2010

I have been playing with Linux and XWindows for a long time, but this is the first time I have ever needed to post a question to find out how to configure things. Please do not tell me that this TightVNC (VNC Xvnc) on openSUSE as Client or Server (Remote Desktop Connections) is how it is done.

I have a Headless SuSE server on an internal netework, my only access to it is remotely, I need remote desktop as a service for all the accounts. Is this possible in KDE4??

OpenSUSE Network :: Can't Figure Out Why It Is Working With Machines And Not With Windows?

Mar 27, 2010

I used to have my print server with cups in openSUSE 11.1 and it used to work perfect. I was able to print from both linux machines and windows. But since I Installed openSUSE 11.2, I'm only able to print from linux machines. In windows XP I'am able to find the printer and install the drivers, and everything seems to work, but when I send the print command, it creates an error. I have three XP pcs that were running perfectly, and now neither one of them print, so I know is a problem with the server itself. I have all the samba and cups services activated, and the firewall is set correctly, but can't figure out why it is working with linux machines and not with windows.

Fedora :: Configure Multiple Remote Machines To Be Exactly The Same?

utility to let me automatically apply shell commands I type to a list of given remote machines? I'm configuring and maintaining multiple servers all running Fedora 12 and I want them to have exactly the same configuration. I also need to check out code from subversion onto these machines; the same code from the same location into the same directory. I know I could use ssh to run each command individually for each machine, but is there a tool that will make this much easier?

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Re-load Grub Following Windows 7 SP1 Upgrade On Dual-Boot?

Apr 28, 2011

A few days ago I went to perform the Service Pack 1 Upgrade for Win 7. This crashed out with an error. On researching the problem I found a solution to fix the problem by marking the Windows partition as active. I did this (via Computer Mgmt -> Disk Mgmt). This allowed the SP1 upgrade to work, however on reboot I got an error BOOTMGR missing. This I rather rashly resolved by using the Windows 7 install DVD in Recovery mode to reinstall the Windows Boot manager via bootrec /Fixboot I thought I would then be able to use the Opensuse 11.2 install disk to fix grub.

I use the Opensuse install disk and select Repair system -> Expert Mode -> Install New Boot Loader then select Other -> Reread Configuration from Disk. This adds Win 7 back into the grub menu. I then select OK and get the message "the bootloader was installed successfully". The problem then comes when I click my way through OK and Next to finish the install. At the end of the process I get the message "An error occurred during the installation" and I'm no further forward.

FYI the PC has a single SATA disk installed partitioned as follows:

dev/sda1 100Mb Win System Parkition
dev/sda2 Windows NTFS
dev/sda3 Windows FAT

Networking :: Remote Desktop Connections ?

Jan 29, 2010

I recently started playing w/ remote desktop connections. W/ a lil persistence I have established connections over my network. Only thing is when connecting from my windows machine via (tightvnc viewer), to my linux desktop,(vncserver) I can only seem to get a remote "virtual login". I do not see and have access to the current login. I can however reverse the connection (starting vnc server) on the windows machine adding a client connect and have control of open over the windows system. Any idea's why I can only get a remote login to my linuz box?

Ubuntu Networking :: Making Mounted File Systems Available On Remote Machines Using SSH?

Dec 19, 2010

if this a simple question I apologise, I'm using a SSH connection to a remote machine which also has ubuntu installed, my remote machine is connected to a windows server, using <places> <Network> and clicking on the server, doing this mounts the server into my remote file systemWhen i look around the file system of the remote machine i'm unable to make the windows server resource available to me.I Assume it has a service file in the /dev directory, but would not know what its called or what i would have to do with it.In the mean time i've managed to connect directily to the server from my local machine, (which is probbialy a better solution) but is it possible to see the server via my remate machine?

Ubuntu Networking :: Use Of The TSC For Remote Desktop Connections?

Jun 17, 2010

Alrighty, I have a couple of questions regarding use of the TSC for remote desktop connections. I'm connecting from my Ubuntu Desktop (Lucid) and i'm connecting to my Laptop (Windows 7) i'm running PC Tools Firewall Plus on the windows machine. The window's machine has remote assistance allowed. At the moment i'm just trying to get the TSC to work on my home network. I filled it out as follows:

Computer: Lappy's IP
Protocol: RDPv5
Username: ZachAdmin
Password: *My password*
Domain: Blank
Client Hostname: Blank

Now the first time I tried to connect, about 20ish seconds passed and "The connection has timed out" appears. So I went into my Firewall and sure enough it was blocking the UDP/TCP packets that my desktop was sending. So I temporarily allowed all UDP/TCP packets. Now when I connect "Connection Refused" immediately pops up. I go into my firewall and it's allowed both inbound and outbound packets from my laptop to my desktop and vis versa. So now i'm really stumped.

Ubuntu Installation :: 11.04: Remote Desktop Only Allows Connections As 'localhost'

May 3, 2011

Under 10.10 the settings dialogue for Remote Desktop said that other machines can connect to this one as kubuntu.local or 192.168.1.85 but after u/g to 11.04 instead of hostname or IP it now just says 'localhost' - which won't work for obvious reasons. I use RD a lot.

Also, despite 'Always display an icon' being checked no icon is displayed in the panel. I tried checking 'Never display an icon' closing the dialogue, re-opening it and re-selecting 'Always display' it still doesn't appear.

OpenSUSE Network :: Remote Desktop To SUSE From Windows

Feb 26, 2010

I have been reading up around the internet that although it is possible to use MSTSC.exe under Windows XP to connect back to a Suse machine running XRDP (I believe).I had been working fine with Suse 11.0 until today. I had not made any changes to my local network but now whenever I try to connect in, I am told that I can not start the session as the sesman logon fails!

I tail'ed /var/log/messages but there is nothing written to that log when I try (interestingly enough, I do get the logon prompt that requests username, password and session type - I usually select KDE3 but have tried all options - and get the error after clicking OK).

My questions:-
1. Is XRDP under 11.1 any better (more stable as when it worked, I use to get kicked out a lot under 11.0)
2. What log file should I be trying to tail so I can see what is happening?

I must use Linux as the back end, I don't want to use a hacked copy of XP anymore and don't want to pay for a real version when Linux is free and should by now be able to grant me access to my network from a remote location!VNC is not an option as I will be wanting to log on more than one user at the same time.
