OpenSUSE Network :: Move Files After N Days?

Sep 24, 2010

I have a script that moves files after 60 days from the FTP folder over to a trash folder which is not accessible by the FTP. From there I can delete the files whenever the drive get's full. That works fine so far.
The only thing that bothers me is that files moved to ".Trash" are not in any folder structure anymore (one big directory with the deleted files in it).

When I do a "ls -la" on the array {} I see the file names including the folders. I'm not sure if the find command or the mv command forgets about the directories.

This is the script: bash -c 'date;find /Volumes/data1/test/ -mtime +60 -type f -exec mv {} /Volumes/data1/.Trash/ ;;date' >> ~/mylog

Fedora Servers :: Can't Login Remotely To Client Machines?

Jun 14, 2009

I am running NFS and NIS servers in my FC8. Clients are also running FC8. Everything was working fine. I could login remotely to server as well as clients. Suddenly (few days ago) a problem started. I can not login remotely to client machines. I did not do anything. I can login to server remotely, but not the client. When I try to login, it accept password and nothing happens. Also, when I try to login from server to client same thing happens. We share the home directory of the server with client. Another question: there two type of nfs server nfs-user-server and nfs-kernel-server. I just use gui to set up the NFS. I don't know which one I am running. Is there any way to find out which nfs I am running?

Ubuntu Servers :: Random Freezing On NIS/NFS Client Machines?

Aug 25, 2011

We administer a small lab of Ubuntu 11.04 machines. Users authenticate via NIS to the fileserver, which then uses NFS to mount their /home directory.

From time to time, seemingly at random, the machines will lock up. After about 15 minutes, they will go back to normal.

Switching the machine to the console with/ Ctrl+Alt+F1 doesn't help either - credentials get entered, but there's still a 15 minute wait before any commands can be entered. Some error messages show up at this point about processes that were running timing out. However, the root user can log in immediately (which makes us think that this is only affecting NIS accounts).

Logging in with the root account, we can ping our NIS server, and it responds normally. We can restart the networking and NIS daemons but neither of these help.

We checked the NIS error log in /var/yp/ypserv.log and it is empty.

We used to be running a different version of Ubuntu on the client machines (10.04 LTS), but not on the server.

Programming :: Encryption / Implementing AIDE On Client Machines?

Aug 22, 2010

I need to implement AIDE on my client machines. The builds on these machine are different, so each workstation will have its own specific db generated through running AIDE initially. It is not good practice to just leave the db on the machine, since an "attacker" would be able to view this information. However, at the same time I do not want to pull back over 100 different aide db's to the ftp server and have an update pull each specifically every time I need to run the check. The plan is to leave the db on the client machine, but encrypt it (using public/private keys). I need to be able to encrypt the file on the client machine. I will use a cron on the client to pull an update (from my ftp server) that runs AIDE. This update needs to be able to decrypt the file, use it running AIDE, then re-encrypt the file on the client.

Ubuntu Servers :: RAID5 Setup To Serve 10 Client Machines?

May 22, 2011

I am trying to build a file server with RAID 5 over a couple of 1TB HDDs, to serve about 10 client machines using Ubuntu Server. I already own a 22-port switch: HP ProCurve v1810G-24 Switch (J9450A), which I am assuming will do the job. And for the actual server I am thinking of buying: HP ProLiant DL120 1U. Will this hardware suffice, or am I missing something important to get the whole thing running?

OpenSUSE Network :: Don't Have The Right Permissions With The Client To Rename Files

Jan 30, 2011

I just performed a fresh installation of openSUSE 11.3 and ISPConfig 3 on my server. I read through the article "The Perfect Server - openSUSE 11.3 x86_64 [ISPConfig 3]" and followed the instructions closely. Everything went smoothly.

I went into ISPConfig 3 and set up a DNS zone, email mailbox, FTP client, and website all for a client I created, hoping to use the client as the main account for a web site I want to host on my server. After I finished with this, I logged onto the server through FileZilla using my newly created client's information. It took me to the "main directory" with the folders cgi-bin, log, ssl, tmp, and web. When I open "web" I see an html file named "index.html."

I tried loading a mock website into the folder, also with an index.html file, and the files transferred over properly except the mock index.html file. The program changed the name to index.html.1. I tried to delete the original index.html file but was not allowed to. I then tried to rename it to something other than index.html and kept receiving a 550 Rename/move failure message. Can anyone point me in the right direction or help me resolve this issue?

I'm thinking perhaps I don't have the right permissions with the client to rename files, but since that's the account I want as the "owner" of this web site, I need to change the permissions so I can. I tried changing the ISPConfig 3 "Limits" for the account to SSH-Chroot Options "NONE" thinking that might be the issue.

Debian Configuration :: Reboot Both The Server And The Client Machines Every Time Change The SAMBA Configuration?

Apr 5, 2010

I am *finally* getting around to rebuilding my file-sharing computer. I'll be sharing files with both Linux and Windoze machines. It's a home network, so there's nothing fancy needed. I know I have to tweak my smb.conf file until I'm satisfied with the features and security. I'm using SWAT and I'm starting with a bare-bones conf file. It's not secure but I can see the server and selected files/directories from my other Linux box.

My really dumb question is, do I have to reboot both the server and the client machines every time I change the SAMBA configuration? I thought I just had to stop and restart the SAMBA service in the SWAT software - but then the server disappears from my client. It looks like I need to reboot both machines for the client to see the server.

Ubuntu :: Sharing Files Between Two Machines On Network?

Nov 4, 2010

I have a problem sharing files between two machines on my network, one, my main one running 10.10 and the other running Lubuntu. I've used the share files option on my main computer, and they show up on the Lubuntu machine, but when I try accessing the files, I get a message telling me that they'failed to mount'. It's frustrating in that I can see that the files are there, and obviously the Lubuntu machine can 'see' them too. I'm sure that I must have missed out something, and I've tried searching, but so far have only come accross some very old tutorials that just confuse me more. Surely there must be a fool proof way of getting this all working? (I've tried Giver, but the Lubuntu machine refuses to run Giver!)

Ubuntu Networking :: Sending Files By Network Between Two Machines

Feb 13, 2011

My two machines are both running Ubuntu 10.10. I want to transfer program files between them using a local area network.

My Ubuntu machines can both see the Window machines on the network, and get files from them. But my Ubuntu machines do not detect each other as being on the network. Nor can my Windows machines detect my Ubuntu machines.

From what I can tell, that's normal, and I've become resigned to using a pendrive to transfer files between the two machines. Or even sending files as email attachments.

there is a clean and easy way to transfer files between two Ubuntu machines on the same local area network.

Networking :: Get Ubuntu Mini To Access The Files On Vista Machines?

May 5, 2009

My new HP mini running Ubuntu sees my HP notebook running Vista,my Compaq desktop running Vista, and my HP desktop running XP as computers belonging to my workgroup, but I can only access my files on the XP machine. The mini and the notebook are wireless and the desktops connect to the router by cable.

All of the computers connect through the router to the DSL modem, and each of them connect to the HP wireless printer. None of the other computers see my mini as belonging to my workgroup, specifically including my XP computer. Figure that it is likely normal that I cannot with my mini open files that I find on my XP, but have to copy and paste them to my mini or one of the flash drives I use with it before I can open them.

I understand I have described a "well known problem" caused by a non standard sequence in Vista, that can be obviated by a fix to the login sequence that can be made to the linux code in my mini so that it will recognize and perform the login (user name and password) that is required when a Vista machine is encountered.

But I'm in over my head, unable to even find the command line on my mini.

General :: Files Uploaded By OSX Machines To Vsftp Server Can't Be Deleted By Other Users?

We never have this problem with files uploaded by PCs. Anyone ever heard of this or know what I should check? The users uploading the files all belong to the same group. Also, I think if you log in to the FTP server with another OSX machine, it will let you delete them. I'm looking at the folders now, they have drwxrwxr-x. When i try to delete them from a PC, it gives me a 550 Remove directory operation failed.

Debian :: Move Files From Old Partition?

Aug 21, 2010

Had a bit of a partition nightmare during an install, involving my home directory.

My partitioning looks like this and my install is still completing:

sda1=/boot
sda2=/
sda3=swap
sda4=/home

My old home partition and data is located in a partition that I preserved, called /homebak and is on sdb.

Once my install is complete, what is the best way to move the data from /sdb1 (homebak) to my newly created /home?

For the record, I tried to copy the partition during set-up, but something wasn't happy.

I've got my important files backed-up, but would prefer not to lose about 5 gigs of music and video.

Apple :: How Best To Move Files From An Old Mac To A New Ubuntu Box

Jun 10, 2010

Last fall I got a new Linux desktop computer from System76. Before that, I had a 1997-era beige G3 Mac. (This Mac is pre-USB plugs.)

I still have files on that old Mac that I need to move to the new machine. Some are text files and various other kinds of files, but mostly, they're image files, and there's a lot of them.

The Mac has a SCSI port and an Ethernet port. No Firewire, no USB.

My question: What's the best way to move the files from the old to the new machine?

(I think it would be a hassle to try to e-mail them, as I have quite a lot of image files on the Mac.)

Also, if some of the files (like text-files?) that are in Mac format can't be read once on a Linux OS, how would I make the necessary conversions?
