i'm running openSUSE 11.3 32b and i have an issue. i'm running a webapp for my business that displays a lot of photos (~20MB/webpage) after 15-20 minutes of browsing the pages the ?display? adapter goes nuts ImageShack® - Online Photo and Video Hosting and when i'm switching from one page to another ff freeze for about 30-60seconds. i also test the app on fedora,ubuntu,windows but with none of those behaviours
View 9 RepliesI just bought an Asus TS mini server. It has an Atom CPU (N280), and an Intel 945 chipset.
I installed Ubuntu Server Edition 10.04, that went smooth.
But on first boot, I see it hanging just after it mounts the swap. Now I don't think it has anything to do with that, the problem seems to me that at that point, it also switches the video mode. I guess that's where the problem is caused. It just freezes, no kernel panic, no reaction to the keyboard.
The system is dual boot, and the other OS is Windows Home Server. I put an ext fs driver there, and tried to read the logs, but don't get a clue from there. In particular, syslog doesn't even exist. Also no X log.
I'm a long time user of CentOS 5 w/KDE 3.5. I have always had this problem to various degrees no matter what installation of CentOS 5 I'm currently on. This same hardware does not exhibit the same symptoms with another OS.The problem is I regularly have many konsole instances open. I alt-tab between them frequently. Inevitably a random alt-tab will freeze the keyboard and the mouse won't be able to click anything although I can move the mouse cursor around. I can't type anything. It seems to have some sort of timeout and it always come back to responsiveness.
I alleviated this problem (I think) by switching keyboards, installing the nvidia driver instead of the nv driver, shutting down all non-essential services.I have seen these symptoms on every system I have installed CentOS 5 where KDE 3.5 was also installed. Very different hardware setups each time.Has anyone else run into similar symptoms?I'm surprised that it's just CentOS 5 w/KDE 3.5 that exhibits this behaviour on the same hardware where other operating systems (gentoo, suse, etc.) did not exhibit these symptoms.
on a newly installed opensuse 11.4 x86_64 I am unable to find the settings to switch keyboard layout from english to german to french or any other language .it used to be in the system settings Keyboard-->Keyboard layouts -->> activate german btw french etc...
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm experiencing random lockups. There are 2 types.1st time this happened when I enabled Kwin compositing effects. The screen turned black and it froze, the mouse pointer froze. Nothing would move. 5 Minutes later I just hard reset the Laptop. I was afraid something could be corrupted as it was shutdown in a bad way. On boot up Kwin's compositing effects were in place.Randomly working on the laptop, everything will freeze except the mouse pointer. This happens like once in a while though.I have a feeling this has something to do with my Dell Studio 1555 Intel GM4500 MHD graphics.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI installed KDE 4.3.5 on my existing Gnome desktop and i have two users using the computer. Now from Gnome I am accustomed to switch between session very easy and the sessions continue to run. If I use the Switch option from KDE it just looks my screen and does not switch. Is it possible that I miss some programs? I installed it with Yast and used the group option. I am pretty sure that I missed something during the installation.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI boot into gnome just fine, but as soon as I switch to console 1 or 2 or N (insert number here) it distorts my video across all of them. It seems like it's changing the refresh rate either horizontal or vertical and I just don't know how to solve the problem. If it distorts I can't get it back to decent readable graphics without a reboot. Was doing the same thing in ubuntu, and that's part of the reason I installed suse. I am running 1600X1200 with 50 refresh rate in gnome and have swapped the console resolution around, trying different options but still have the same problem.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been using SuSE Linux in text mode for the longest time (since 8.0) and I'm often more comfortable working in that mode. I have just installed 11.3 with GNOME as a fresh install on my dual-boot laptop and I am pretty happy with the way things work. But I still languish for my text mode from time to time.
So: I know about right clicking on the desktop and selecting "Open in Terminal" and that should really solve my needs, but I read here in an older thread about using Ctrl + Alt + F2 (as it happens, it can be F1, F2, F3, etc.) so I decided to try it out. Well, when I do that, I get exactly what I expected --- a black text screen with a login: prompt and I can do all my little texty things just as sweet as can be. Except for one thing: I can't get back! The only way I've been able to get back to a GUI is to use "shutdown -r now" as user: root. Also, Ctrl + Alt + F1 removes the GUI completely for all four terminals. Can someone tell me more about this function where I might read an "info" or "man" about it? I don't even know what it is called, so it is hard to know how to search. I've been using fglrx since 11.3 came out, and I just upgraded to 11.4 today and noticed that my graphics card is now supported by the open-source radeon driver. I was trying to switch, but was never able to properly switch the driver and get radeon running. I've read many of the help pages, but still am unable to actually get radeon working.
Perhaps I'm missing something, such as not properly removing fglrx, but I'm not too sure.
I've installed OpenSUSE 11.4 / KDE on a self assembled PC based on the ASRock P4i945GC motherboard that hosts the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 which is inside the 945G Express Chipset. The graphics performance seems not so good, in fact:
- at KDE start, a message appears saying that desktop effects are slow and are being switched off;
- switching from a window to another is not fast;
- nexuiz (3D game) at 800x600 resolution with all effects turned off is orribly slow;
- glxgears runs at 50 FPS;
I made a comparison with OpenSUSE 11.2 Live KDE where:
- desktop effects are active and smooth;
- tab switching is faster;
- glxgears runs at 200 FPS;
I'm not so skilled in linux to understand which video driver is used in the two cases. find the best video driver and eventually install it in place of the current one in 11.4. Here follows an excerpt from lspci on 11.4:

I was a user of Suse10.0 to 10.3 when my laptop HD got to full and I was forced to remove it and give the whole thing to windows (to cheep to buy a larger HD). I have recently built myself a new computer and decided to give Kubuntu a try. After using it a few times and having multiple problems I am giving up and going back to Suse (I liked the looks and layout much better).
Right now I have a dual boot system with Windows7 and Kubuntu9.10. I would like to not have to reinstall windows and just take over the space that ubuntu was occupying.
Will I run into any problems with grub? Will it install just like a fresh volume and reinstall grub? Do I need to reformat the space ubuntu is using?
I have the following problem: I installed 11.2 on a laptop with the hardware clock said to run on local time (CE(S)T), expecting to do a dual-boot Windows setup later. That plan got scrapped, and the to-DST switchover lately failed, so I'd like to switch the hwclock to UTC.

On my ASUS Eee 1000H with openSUSE 11.3 I'd like to be able to switch bluetooth on and off with the gnome bluetooth applet. However, when I run /usr/bin/bluetooth-applet as a normal user, the applet tells me:

Okay, so it doesn't have write permissions on /dev/rfkill. When (as root) I change the permissions on /dev/rfkill from crw-r--r-- to crw-rw-rw-, the applet works as expected. Until the next reboot, when the permissions for rfkill are reset to crw-r--r--. How to make the permissions stick? Or if there is a better way to allow the applet to enable and disable the bluetooth adapter?
How can I change my audio output (and input) from one device to another?

Changing settings in Phonon is a hassle, and it still won't change the sound immediately for the apps... Is there a quick way to just disable one device and enable the other, without having to restart the apps that use them? (For instance, right now Skype and my browser are outputting to headphones and amarok to my speakers - one enabled device that receives everything, bang! output for everything to another device and the first device is having a nap)
I can't see any settings in KMix to facilitate such a change...
what I can do to change sound cards quickly and easily?
I recall doing this in seconds in Ubuntu via their mixer, so would it be similar if I ditched KDE in favor of Gnome??

Since I use this for work, I don't want the DE to get unstable with updates, but want to do other updates like security updates. Should I disable the KDE Factory Desktop repos? How can I work this so everything updates without taking my KDE into 4.4.1 beta? I ask because I'm not sure yet what comes down through OSS, NON OSS, and Updates repos....or, if I can only do those. I'm just trying to make it dummy proof..I don't tend to break things in linux
i've had a problema with opensuse 11.3. Sometimes (3 times) the O.S. is freeze. STOP everything. And i had that shutdown with button. I think that the problem is with KDE, but i dont know.
View 9 Replies View RelatedFirefox 4 freeze in openSUSE-11.4? Mine freezes randomly, it seems, on opening links in new tabs. I don't think it's Flash as it happens on any web site, even without flash (e.g. like this forum). I've updated to the latest version from the Mozilla repo but it still freezes. The only option is to kill it and restart it. So I use Chromium at the moment. But I prefer Firefox.
PS I don't have any Firefox 4 problems in WinXP at work. And I think I haven't yet had a freeze on my Intel laptop or Atom netbook (maybe I haven't used them long enough), looks like it may be something to do with 64-bits (AMD)? But I may be wrong.

I updated from v11.2. to v11.3.I have 4 workspaces defined. The Gnome panel shows only in the first workspace! When I switch to another one, the panel disappears. As you may imagine, this is rather inconvenient. Once I am in another workspace other than 1, my only option is to reboot since there is no way to navigate anywhere. How do I set up the Gnome panel to show in all workspaces?
On FC11 64 bit with Adobe flash plugin for Linux installed, I see segfault errors from "npviewer" in /var/log/messages. The only browser I have tried yet, Firefox, has glitches every now and then. Sometimes it shows the title of a page in a tab, but the page is blank. This can even happen when I try the Google main page. Is it true that npviewer has something to do with Adobe flash? Is there a way to fix the problem? If it is caused by Adobe flash, is there a different plugin that will replace Adobe flash player?
View 1 Replies View Relatedi am able to try ubuntu and everything works fine until i try to install. the menu comes up to the first page where it tells you to plug in your machine and make sure there is enough disk space and network connectivity. when i hit next on this page the mouse icon changes but the next page never loads. the longest i let it hang there was 2 hours. ive tried multiple times with the same result.

What is my problem? I have a page (one page - text an graphic) to print. When I sent it to my printer it prints OK. When I sent it agian, the output is totally garbled. When I sent it again (a third time) it is OK. Sent it again (4th time) it is garbled. Sent it again ... you get the picture ;-). Alternating good and bad pages.
What is my setup? I run Fedora 14 with Cups 1.4.6. The printer is a HP Deskjet 940C. It is connected to a linksys wireless print server. It is configured in CUPS to use ipp printing. The driver I use in Cups is 'CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.6 Simplified (color, 2-sided printing)'.
