OpenSUSE Install :: Gnome Panel Disappears When Switching To Another Workspace

Jul 16, 2010

Linux 2.6.34-12-desktop x86_64
Gnome desktop

I updated from v11.2. to v11.3.I have 4 workspaces defined. The Gnome panel shows only in the first workspace! When I switch to another one, the panel disappears. As you may imagine, this is rather inconvenient. Once I am in another workspace other than 1, my only option is to reboot since there is no way to navigate anywhere. How do I set up the Gnome panel to show in all workspaces?

I have 2 workspaces and when i switch to the 2nd one (either with Ctrl-Alt-Left or by clicking with the mouse) after loging in, the desktop freezes. I have to do a Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to kill the xserver and log in again. Removing the workspace switcher and adding it again does not solve the problem. And I can't find any message in the logs.

OpenSUSE :: Workspace Switcher Bugged After Gnome 2.32 Upgrade?

Dec 18, 2010

After doing the upgrade per this thread my gnome panel gets bugged when the workspace switcher applet is attached to it. Also the Cairo Dock bugs out with the workspace switcher applet attached to it. I can change desktops with key commands fine. It would just be nice if this could be fixed. I am sticking with gnome 2.32 because of my affinity with Evolution which performs better in 2.32.

Ubuntu :: Prompt Disappears When Switching User?

Sep 6, 2010

My normal prompt looks like: username(at)ubuntu + current directory. (Odd format, it doesn't really look like that, but I was told I needed 15 posts to post an URL).Whenever I change user with "su username" (at least when changing from root to normal user), this prompt completely disappears. All it says on the left in front of the input "$". Also the history doesn't work, and the tab key doesn't complete anything, but rather acts as the normal tab in an editor. do I fix this? It is very annoying. Sorry for the stupid question, but I've searched around for an answer, finding none.

OpenSUSE :: OpenSUSE 11.3 GNOME Workspace Shortcuts

Feb 14, 2011

On the default GNOME installation, I noticed there were no option in Keyboard Shortcuts to bind keys to switch to specific workspaces (I.E. <ctrl>1 to switch to workspace 1, <ctrl>2 for workspace 2, etc).

I tried editing the entries in GNOME Configuration Editor under apps->metacity->global_keybindings, but the bindings weren't working.

how to set these? I'm somewhat new to openSUSE and Linux in general.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Switching Bluetooth On / Off With Gnome Applet

Aug 11, 2010

On my ASUS Eee 1000H with openSUSE 11.3 I'd like to be able to switch bluetooth on and off with the gnome bluetooth applet. However, when I run /usr/bin/bluetooth-applet as a normal user, the applet tells me:

Code:
** (bluetooth-applet:8598): WARNING **: Could not open RFKILL control device, please verify your installation

Okay, so it doesn't have write permissions on /dev/rfkill. When (as root) I change the permissions on /dev/rfkill from crw-r--r-- to crw-rw-rw-, the applet works as expected. Until the next reboot, when the permissions for rfkill are reset to crw-r--r--. How to make the permissions stick? Or if there is a better way to allow the applet to enable and disable the bluetooth adapter?

Ubuntu :: Top Panel Disappears

Jul 25, 2011

My family uses Ubuntu on two separate laptops. What happened on each of those laptops with the last ~10 days was that the top panel disappeared. I don't know what lead up to the disappearance on the first one, but this is what happened on the second one:The user closed the lid while Ubuntu was running. I don't know whether Ubuntu is set to sleep or to hibernate when the lid is closed, but regardless of that doing this never caused problems before. Yesterday when the lid was closed and then opened and the user logged back in, the top panel was missing. Still missing after a reboot. Had to be rebuilt.

Both laptops on which this happened are running 11.04 using the classic interface.Perhaps related is that on the first laptop the sound volume adjustment icon disappeared. I tried to add it back in but it's not in the list of widgets or applets or whatever Gnome calls them. How do I add the volume slider back into the panel? Is this a known problem? Is there a fix or a way of preventing this from happening again?I don't use Ubuntu, but I have direct access to these machines so I can run things and get info if you need such.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 - Gedit Icon Disappears From Panel

Jun 10, 2011

Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit. I tried 11.04 and did not care for it. I like to keep icons to start the browser, terminal, and gedit, on the panel. Up until recently, that has not been a problem. The browser and terminal icons work. But, the gedit icon goes away when I shut down my system, and bring it back up. The icon will stay in the panel for as long as I'm using my system, but once I shut it down, it's gone.

When I attempted to login, Plasma Workspace crashes and nothing loads. I am forced to use another window manager to login into the system, and when I investigated into this problem by typing plasma-desktop in the command terminal, I receive this error:

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.2 Running Slow / Freezes And Icons Disappears

Jul 8, 2010

I'm really new to opensuse, and linux in general. I started using 11.2 in may and I'm still having trouble. I started it on a newly refurbished HP Pavillion. It's always seemed to run slow, freezes up when I plug in my external hard drive, won't play music on amarok or it will lag, things like that. When I run it in windows everything works fine. and it has always ran really hot and loud when in opensuse.

To make things worse, lately if I open mozilla, all the programs/windows I have open will disappear, all my tabs will disappear, all the icons on my desktop disappear and my application launcher, clock, etc, all disappear. when i manually shut it down and restart it works fine for a while. I keep trying to find things online but I've got to the point where I'm afraid to mess it up more.

The last 1 weeks or 2, moving around in the gnome panel has slowed a lot. What was a 1 second delay switching from workspace 1 to workspace 2 now takes 30 seconds. Inside the applications like gnome terminal processing is fast, Thunderbird and Firefox do seem to have slowed but Kate, Kaffeine work fine. Dragging and dropping into workspaces takes 15-30seconds but by using the drop down box the speed is normal. This machine is running OpenSuse 11.2, Gnome Desktop 2.28.2, Amd 64 3000+, 2Gb RAM,

OpenSUSE Install :: Switching From Ubuntu To Suse?

Dec 22, 2009

I was a user of Suse10.0 to 10.3 when my laptop HD got to full and I was forced to remove it and give the whole thing to windows (to cheep to buy a larger HD). I have recently built myself a new computer and decided to give Kubuntu a try. After using it a few times and having multiple problems I am giving up and going back to Suse (I liked the looks and layout much better).

Right now I have a dual boot system with Windows7 and Kubuntu9.10. I would like to not have to reinstall windows and just take over the space that ubuntu was occupying.

Will I run into any problems with grub? Will it install just like a fresh volume and reinstall grub? Do I need to reformat the space ubuntu is using?
