OpenSUSE :: Firefox Is Slow Opening New Tabs/switching Between Tabs
Mar 25, 2010Firefox is sometimes slow opening new tabs/switching between tabs. If I click on the kickoff application launcher button, it takes a few seconds to open, and typing something in the search makes it hang up for about 20 seconds before it does the search. Clicking on an app takes 16 seconds before the menu window closes and the program begins to start. Then it takes another 30sec-1min before the app is usable. smplayer plays video with tearing.
Like right now I tried taking a screenshot, and it tells me
Error launching /usr/share/applications/kde4/ksnapshot.desktop. Either KLauncher is not running anymore, or it failed to start the application.
while the app worked fine.
I also tried running glxgears right now, and it runs but the gears don't move, and terminal states
15 frames in 19.0 seconds = 0.789 FPS
XIO: fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server ":0.0"
after 48 requests (48 known processed) with 15 events remaining.
If I'm on dolphin, and I click a video to start smplayer, it takes about 1 minute for it to start.
Memory is using 1.4GB out of 3.6GB, with 0.08GB/2GB swap
Top shows an average usage of less than 10% average. Xorg is always 25%, kwin is always 10% and then rest of the apps are less than that.
CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 620 Processor
Integrated VIdeo: HD4200 with fglrx driver
When I ssh into the computer with x tunneling, the programs start up faster than being on the desktop

Mar 2, 2011Switching to and from insert mode in Vim is no longer instantaneous since I use tmux. After pressing Esc in insert mode, it takes a noticeable amount of time to actually get out of insert mode. After pressing Esc and any other key afterwards the switch is immediate, and the command for the key pressed after Esc is executed. Any idea what might cause this?The Vim configuration is not the problem as the delay does not occur when I run Vim outside tmux, so this is probably related to tmux somehow. I use gnome-terminal btw.
Also worth noting, it seems I can not define key bindings in tmux for Esc, my plan was to bind Esc to:bind Escape send-keys.Alas, it seems binding anything to Esc for tmux does not work. The same problem occurs in screen as well.
Ubuntu Installation :: Post-GRUB 2 Delay - Troubleshoot This And Determine What Is Causing The Delay
May 11, 2011After GRUB 2 comes up (I'm running Ubuntu 10.10) and I choose the OS to boot, there is about a 5 second delay where nothing appears to happen after I make the selection -- no disk activity. It happens consistently every time I boot. Again, this is after I choose the OS to boot, so it shouldn't have anything to do with the standard delay to allow me to choose the appropriate OS.Is there a good way to troubleshoot this and determine what is causing the delay?

Jul 16, 2010I've performed a new installation of openSUSE 11.3 and I see a lag while starting Opera - close to 10 - 15 seconds.... I didn't have a similar issue with 11.2.... I notice this not only in KDE but in Gnome as well.... This happens only with Opera and not any other application.... These are the details about my Opera installation:

OpenSUSE :: 11.3 KDE 4 - Hiding Notifications After Short Delay?
Sep 13, 2010I don't like the 'hide' array on the system tray. I never hide my icons there. There is an icon-by-icon setting to hide/show but this is a little laborious. However, there currently doesn't seem to be an easy way to show all icons, but, at the same, hide pop-up notifications after a short delay. How to implement this?

OpenSUSE Install :: Long Delay During Boot - 11.2
Feb 21, 2010I'm trying to track down a longggg delay during OpenSUSE 11.2 boot. It's 1 to 2 minutes long.
1. I upgraded the kernel to "vmlinux-2.6.31.12-0.1-desktop.gz" a while back, and I'm "kind of" thinking this is when it began. It seems in previous versions (I came from 10.3) that the grub menu always contained the previous version. That doesn't seem to be true in 11.2. Is there any way to tell OpenSUSE YaST/zypper to keep the previous version and leave the entry in grub?
2. What does this message mean: "BIOS EDD facility v0.16 2004-Jun-25, 2 devices found"?
I haven't pinpointed the error, and there is nothing really obvious in /var/log/messages. The drives are there, and the network is up. I'm sort of leaning towards the new kernel. What processes wait 60 seconds? If I watch the console closely for the message before the delay, it can vary.

Aug 12, 2010I get some errors in dmesg and a delay as libata probes and tries to negotiate with my eSATA enclosure.
Some backstory to this adventure:My mainboard is an MSI K9AGM2-L with the AMD SB600 chipset providing the AHCI SATA controller for four ports, two of which (#s 3 and 4) are available.
A Rosewill RCR-AK-IM5002 internal card reader (manufacturer page missing) provides a SATA-to-eSATA adaptor port.
I wish to use a SAMSUNG Spinpoint M7E HM641JI 640GB 2.5" SATA hard disk drive externally. First, I had a Vantec NST-260SU-BK 2.5" SATA to USB 2.0 and eSATA enclosure. As explained in this forum post, all seemed well at first. But even though I got absolutely no visible errors, I could see (through hash checking and byte-by-byte comparisons) that writing (copying) to the external disk was not happening correctly. After exchanging the enclosure several times, I finally noticed that the retailer had a different (generic) brand, so I got one of those instead. (The particular unit I got was missing its screws; had a protrusion in its casing that obstructed the circuit board's seating; and caused even my mainboard's firmware to lock up when it was probed, twice, on each boot. A replacement with the same model remedied those three issues.)
Now we come to the present. The Comkia MM-G3BK-SUE MobiMe G3 2.5" SATA to USB 2.0 and eSATA enclosure (manufacturer page missing) doesn't seem to exhibit the writing issue (yet) -- hurray! However, it causes libata to struggle for fifteen seconds or so trying to connect when it is plugged in. (It also causes openSUSE to stall while booting for that reason.) Mar 28, 2011After I boot up into 11.4, the desktop/icons appear but then there is a delay of about 20 - 30 seconds before the bottom-right task bar items appear. During that time, I can't start any applications. This happens on both desktop PC's, very frustrating and not present with 11.3.

Aug 4, 2010Every time I boot up OpenSUSE 11.3 it hangs at the same "position" for approximately 3 minutes and then continues to boot. Unfortunately I see no corresponding error log e.g. in dmesg output. Hence, I don't know what is the reason for that. Here is my dmesg output. The delay occurs at 20 seconds after beginning of boot process (line 1085). I also analyzed the boot process with bootchart.
My computer: Notebook Lenovo ThinkPad R400.

Mar 2, 2010Using gnome I love the desktop effects, except the 'maximize window' effect. There is an annoying delay when I maximize a window. Is there a way to turn this particular effect off, while leaving all the others on. I looked in control center>desktop effects, but the option is not there. The only way I could turn off the maximize effect was unchecking the "enable desktop effects" checkbox. But this turns all effects off. All other effects run smooth and snappy.

Jul 10, 2010I installed KDE 4.3.5 on my existing Gnome desktop and i have two users using the computer. Now from Gnome I am accustomed to switch between session very easy and the sessions continue to run. If I use the Switch option from KDE it just looks my screen and does not switch. Is it possible that I miss some programs? I installed it with Yast and used the group option. I am pretty sure that I missed something during the installation.

Mar 11, 2010I boot into gnome just fine, but as soon as I switch to console 1 or 2 or N (insert number here) it distorts my video across all of them. It seems like it's changing the refresh rate either horizontal or vertical and I just don't know how to solve the problem. If it distorts I can't get it back to decent readable graphics without a reboot. Was doing the same thing in ubuntu, and that's part of the reason I installed suse. I am running 1600X1200 with 50 refresh rate in gnome and have swapped the console resolution around, trying different options but still have the same problem.

Aug 7, 2010I have been using SuSE Linux in text mode for the longest time (since 8.0) and I'm often more comfortable working in that mode. I have just installed 11.3 with GNOME as a fresh install on my dual-boot laptop and I am pretty happy with the way things work. But I still languish for my text mode from time to time.
So: I know about right clicking on the desktop and selecting "Open in Terminal" and that should really solve my needs, but I read here in an older thread about using Ctrl + Alt + F2 (as it happens, it can be F1, F2, F3, etc.) so I decided to try it out. Well, when I do that, I get exactly what I expected --- a black text screen with a login: prompt and I can do all my little texty things just as sweet as can be. Except for one thing: I can't get back! The only way I've been able to get back to a GUI is to use "shutdown -r now" as user: root. Also, Ctrl + Alt + F1 removes the GUI completely for all four terminals. Can someone tell me more about this function where I might read an "info" or "man" about it? I don't even know what it is called, so it is hard to know how to search. Mar 12, 2011I've been using fglrx since 11.3 came out, and I just upgraded to 11.4 today and noticed that my graphics card is now supported by the open-source radeon driver. I was trying to switch, but was never able to properly switch the driver and get radeon running. I've read many of the help pages, but still am unable to actually get radeon working.
Perhaps I'm missing something, such as not properly removing fglrx, but I'm not too sure.

Mar 31, 2011I've installed OpenSUSE 11.4 / KDE on a self assembled PC based on the ASRock P4i945GC motherboard that hosts the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 which is inside the 945G Express Chipset. The graphics performance seems not so good, in fact:
- at KDE start, a message appears saying that desktop effects are slow and are being switched off;
- switching from a window to another is not fast;
- nexuiz (3D game) at 800x600 resolution with all effects turned off is orribly slow;
- glxgears runs at 50 FPS;
I made a comparison with OpenSUSE 11.2 Live KDE where:
- desktop effects are active and smooth;
- tab switching is faster;
- glxgears runs at 200 FPS;
I'm not so skilled in linux to understand which video driver is used in the two cases. find the best video driver and eventually install it in place of the current one in 11.4. Here follows an excerpt from lspci on 11.4:

Dec 22, 2009I was a user of Suse10.0 to 10.3 when my laptop HD got to full and I was forced to remove it and give the whole thing to windows (to cheep to buy a larger HD). I have recently built myself a new computer and decided to give Kubuntu a try. After using it a few times and having multiple problems I am giving up and going back to Suse (I liked the looks and layout much better).
Right now I have a dual boot system with Windows7 and Kubuntu9.10. I would like to not have to reinstall windows and just take over the space that ubuntu was occupying.
Will I run into any problems with grub? Will it install just like a fresh volume and reinstall grub? Do I need to reformat the space ubuntu is using?

Apr 29, 2010I have the following problem: I installed 11.2 on a laptop with the hardware clock said to run on local time (CE(S)T), expecting to do a dual-boot Windows setup later. That plan got scrapped, and the to-DST switchover lately failed, so I'd like to switch the hwclock to UTC.
By now, I have (coming to work at 08:53 CEST = 06:53 UTC today):

Okay, so it doesn't have write permissions on /dev/rfkill. When (as root) I change the permissions on /dev/rfkill from crw-r--r-- to crw-rw-rw-, the applet works as expected. Until the next reboot, when the permissions for rfkill are reset to crw-r--r--. How to make the permissions stick? Or if there is a better way to allow the applet to enable and disable the bluetooth adapter?

Changing settings in Phonon is a hassle, and it still won't change the sound immediately for the apps... Is there a quick way to just disable one device and enable the other, without having to restart the apps that use them? (For instance, right now Skype and my browser are outputting to headphones and amarok to my speakers - one enabled device that receives everything, bang! output for everything to another device and the first device is having a nap)
I can't see any settings in KMix to facilitate such a change...
what I can do to change sound cards quickly and easily?
I recall doing this in seconds in Ubuntu via their mixer, so would it be similar if I ditched KDE in favor of Gnome??

I updated from v11.2. to v11.3.I have 4 workspaces defined. The Gnome panel shows only in the first workspace! When I switch to another one, the panel disappears. As you may imagine, this is rather inconvenient. Once I am in another workspace other than 1, my only option is to reboot since there is no way to navigate anywhere. How do I set up the Gnome panel to show in all workspaces?
