OpenSUSE :: Samba Password File Fails
Oct 18, 2010
I run:
Linux 2.6.27.48-0.3-pae i686
openSUSE 11.1
KDE 3.5.10
When I attempt to determine who's in the samba database or enter a new member in the file I get the following: No builtin nor plugin backend for tbdsam found PANIC (pid 8201): pdb_get_methods_reload: failed to get pdb methods for backend tbdsam
[Code]....
I attempted to upgrade from the software.opensuse.org website with samba-3.60-10.1.i586.rpm. I get a message: Nothing provides cifs-utils needed by samba-client-3.60-10.1.i586.rpm. So I could not upgrade. There are other upgrades on the site but they are not available for some reason. What is an appropriate upgrade? Is upgrading the solution? If not then what?

I set up a samba file sharing system but my workgroup asks for a username and password see this-This is the text in /etc/samba/smb.conf:
# smb.conf is the main Samba configuration file. You find a full commented
# version at /usr/share/doc/packages/samba/examples/smb.conf.SUSE if the
# samba-doc package is installed.

I want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.
My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.

I remember that some time ago I found a guide on the Ubuntu website about adding samba shares to mount at boot via /etc/fstab. The guide also mentioned using a credentials file to store the username and password.
However, the password was encrypted (in md5 I think) and it could not be read directly, but it still worked with fstab mount. If I remember correctly, the file contents were similar to this:
Code:
useraname = user
password = --md5
where was replaced by the encoded password. All was done in terminal. Recently I changed computers, and re-installed Ubuntu, but I forgot to save that file so I am not sure about the contents. I would like to know how to do this again, but I can't find the guide anymore. Does anyone know how to do this? Storing the password in plain text in file readable only by root is not acceptable because it can be read by someone mounting the drive from other operating system, and the share cannot be mounted/unmounted by regular users (which is possible with the md5 encrypted password).

I am attempting a simple two computer office network using Samba. When attempting to access the shared director, a screen pops in Linux and Windows requesting a user name and password. I haven't established a user name or password. Is there a way to allow any computer on the network to access the shared file without a user name and password? The following is the result of:
cat /etc/samba/smb.conf
[global]
add machine script = /usr/sbin/useradd -c Machine -d /var/lib/nobody -s /bin/false %m$

I installed SLES 10.2 with SAMBA 3.5.5.43 to retire our old Microsoft Windows 2000 Server and save some money. All was fine until last week when our chief asked to me to set password expiration for all clients. This morning, all users cannot logon because, when they logon, windows asks to change password and then it gives error error "Access Denied".

I have NIS setup to manage all my users, and I have samba set up to share out a directory to the users windows computers - which are part of a corporate domain. I have a requirement to synchronise the NIS password to the Samba password so that when a user changes their password in the Linux environment it automatically updates the Samba password so that the user can simply update the password stored by Windows Explorer.

Have just installed 11.4 Linux 2.6.37.6-0.5-default. I find that saving data does not enter the folder. Attempting to file once more, the folder selected shows that data is already there and gives the option to overwrite. Closing the folder and reopening again, data has still not transferred. Only after rebooting does the data appear. I am wondering whether I have insufficient RAM (512K)

Maybe this is the wrong place to ask, but I'm trying to install opensuse 11.4 (64-bit) in virtual box, the installation went smoothly (no visible error messages). But the boot seem to get stuck. If anyone has got an idea what it could be, it would mean a lot. These are the last prints in the log before it gets stuck:
INIT: version 2.88 booting
System Boot Control: Running /etc/init.d/boot

I had set up a Samba server on SuSE linux a few years ago with a single shared directory. It has been running fine ever since, surviving various system upgrades and hardware migrations without ever needing to change the configuration (well, maybe once or twice). However, since a few weeks ago, it refuses write access to the share. It just returns NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED when I try to create or write to a file. That's also what /var/log/samba/log.smbd says (nothing more AFAICT). It's the same for all clients, i.e. remote Win XP PCs or local smbclient.
The funny thing is that it allows write access immediately after rebooting the server, but after a while (the next day or so) it refuses again. Restarting smbd or nmbd doesn't change anything here. I suspect that this started after installing the latest security updates for OpenSuSE 11.2 on May 17th. The new packages were (according to /var/log/zypper.log):
xorg-x11-libXext-2379.noarch
libmysqlclient-devel-2315.noarch
openSUSE-build-key-2398.noarch
libpython2_6-1_0-2213.noarch
libpng-devel-2159.noarch
Somehow I can't see which of these might have an influence on samba. But I am absolutely and positively sure that I didn't change anything else. I logged into the server only once in months, and all I did was doing the updates using the updater applet.

I know there are permissions one can assign to certain files and folders, but this won't come in handy if you need quick access to a file -and as User I often do- and don't want to slow down getting root permissions. You know, just open-close-move on. Is there a way, as user, to assign a password to a file or a folder? It would make the job a lot easier and more efficient.

I have a samba share that was previously hosted by and accessed by Windows operating systems. As a result the filenames of all the files are not very command-line/linux friendly. I need to get a script or app that can go through the samba share recursively and change all file names to lowercase and replace spaces in the names with a ".", "_" or something.

I have a security camera (Mobotix M12) which can save video to a Samba share, but it's unable to mount the share. So from another system I am trying to mount that share and it's failing.
The problem is not firewall, as no problem messages, and the Samba log is vacant.
When using this command, and I give the password:
In dmesg on the client I get:
And on the server I get nothing in dmesg or samba logs. And no logfile is created for the client machine in /var/log/samba. I can ssh over to driveway on the server just fine.
I used to use Samba, although it's been a long time, since I discovered sshfs.

I've installed a Ubuntu Server 10.04, LAMP configuration,,, nothing extra beside that.
Then I followed this instruction [URL] to set up Samba.
When trying to access the "share" from my windows 7 client, it keeps asking for user and password.
I've been googling around and have found a lot of people having simular problems, but I cant(I think) find any solution relevant for me.

How to create a smb share without prompting win users for a password?
Following is my smb.conf.
I have added a user called ux_share in the system and created the /home/ux_share/share with the right permission. And created the smbuser ux_share too.
Now when I try to access the share from a winbox it prompts for the passw. This share is likely to access by several winusers and i have no idea about thier workgroup names whatsoever. This is just a simple share im trying to publish just like an annonymous vsftpd account.

I am trying to install Ubuntu as a secondary operating system on my Windows 7 PC.
System specs as follows:
AMD Athlon II X4 620 Processor 2.6 Ghz
4.00 GB RAM
ATI Radeon 4600 series video card
I downloaded the 32-bit ISO image from ubuntu.com and burned it to a CD. When I try to boot, I get a purple splash screen with a couple of icons on the bottom. Shortly thereafter, I get another screen that says Ubuntu and has 5 dots on it that change color from red to white in sequence. During this time, my CD drive is active. After a very long time, the drive goes quiet and I get an error that the installer can't find the username or password. I don't remember the exact text of the error message. The system was hung and required a hard boot to recover.
Reading these forums, I rebooted the computer and this time pressed the escape key once the display had changed to the Ubuntu with the dots. The username/password error came up quickly and was followed by several "Bus error" messages. I ejected the CD and restarted the computer in order to come here for enlightenment. I'm reasonably good with Windows but a total neophyte when it comes to Linux. I'm going to try it again and this time record the exact error message (which is what I should've done initially).

Apologies if this was asked before -- I have googled the last bytes out of my Firefox but fail to find anything helpful. Here's my problem:I have a foomatic hpijs cups-driver for a HP Inkjet (Non-PS printer) installed. Printing from UNIX-hosts works. I have cups configured not to allow raw-printing (/etc/cups/mime.types: #application/octet-stream, /etc/cups/mime.convs: #application/octet-stream).I have now installed samba-printing, the cups PS-drivers plus the Windows PS-drivers are populated to /etc/samba/drivers/W32X86/ and get pushed to the WIN-Client.Problem is that when I print from a WINXP client, the printer outputs heaps of Postscript-text instead of my page.I have tried to debug this a bit but fail to find anything really useful. My observations so far:
- The samba-pushed HP_Photosmart_3300.ppd (in both /etc/samba/drivers/... and in the resulting dir on the WINXP client) reads:
*cupsFilter: "application/vnd.cups-postscript 0 foomatic-rip"
