CentOS 5 Server :: Cups & Samba -- Printing From WINXP Client As Postscript Fails?

Mar 14, 2009

Apologies if this was asked before -- I have googled the last bytes out of my Firefox but fail to find anything helpful. Here's my problem:I have a foomatic hpijs cups-driver for a HP Inkjet (Non-PS printer) installed. Printing from UNIX-hosts works. I have cups configured not to allow raw-printing (/etc/cups/mime.types: #application/octet-stream, /etc/cups/mime.convs: #application/octet-stream).I have now installed samba-printing, the cups PS-drivers plus the Windows PS-drivers are populated to /etc/samba/drivers/W32X86/ and get pushed to the WIN-Client.Problem is that when I print from a WINXP client, the printer outputs heaps of Postscript-text instead of my page.I have tried to debug this a bit but fail to find anything really useful. My observations so far:

- The samba-pushed HP_Photosmart_3300.ppd (in both /etc/samba/drivers/... and in the resulting dir on the WINXP client) reads:
*cupsFilter: "application/vnd.cups-postscript 0 foomatic-rip"

General :: CUPS Client Configuration For Printing To Windows Print Server

May 24, 2011

Since last few weeks i am struggling to setup printer connected to print server.

Here is the setup that i have:

I have Red Hat Linux machine from which i want to issue print jobs.

I have Windows Print Server having multiple printers connected to it.

I am able to print jobs from Windows client to any of these printers. But i am not able to print from Red Hat Linux. (i have verified that i can print using smbclient utility, but based on my reading, CUPS API could be used from application to discover, print and issue print jobs.)

I am not able to get the correct configuration for setting up CUPS client.

My office is on migrating to UNIX system. I am configuring Centos as our server including some program will be running on it. But one of the problem is we use foxpro for operating some program on server directly. I can run that program on Centos using DOSBox. My question is how can i run that program on winxp client that connected to network through samba to that program on server? so my plan is just give the shortcut and link it to server. I have tried to open it but not work.

Software :: PostScript Fails To Start - Printing Error Messages "Could Not Get GGV Control: Failed To Activate"

I have an older version of ggv on RHEL for viewing PostScript (.ps) files, but the binary I have refuses to open files from AFS. ggv-2.12.0 is able to open these files from AFS just fine on my Mac. I was not able to find packaged binaries for RHEL 5 or 6 for ggv-2.12.0, so I downloaded the source and compiled it. Unfortunately, it fails to start, printing these error messages:

Does anyone know the fix? Or alternatively, is there another good and well-maintained PostScript viewer for Linux?

CentOS 5 Server :: Openvpn Connect To Samba Share From Windows XP Client?

Sep 15, 2009

I'm trying to set up a VPN connection between our CentOS 5.3 server at work and my bosses XP computer at home. At this point, we are kinda locked into Quickbooks. I'm testing the connection from my XP boot at home to see if it works. I can log into our servicemanuals easily enough from XP at home however, the windows takes forever to update. I have the Samba server only listening on port 445 because is seems to work more efficiently at work. I connect to the Samba shares via linux from home and everything works well but, when I try to do anything with the shares from Windows client at home, it's very slow!

I'm thinking that it must have something either to do with the Windows OpenVPN client or the client.conf file. Is there anything I should look at in the .conf file for answers?

Ubuntu :: Server 10.4 Printing - Without Cups

Nov 30, 2010

I'm not looking to setup a print server. I want to print documents TO an existing network printer while I'm logged in via ssh to my Ubuntu Server 10.4 command line shell. Things like admin emails, pdf docs, etc.

All the clients on my LAN are able to print directly to the network printer without any help from the Ubuntu Server. I don't want to setup CUPS on the server unless that's the only way to print from the server itself to a networked printer.

Do I need CUPS or can I print from the command line in some other way?

I also copied the printer files in the /etc/cups/ppd directory over to the new server. But I can't get printing to work. And when I run system-config-printer-tui I don't see any of the printers in the dialog box. What other file(s) am I missing?

Is there an option to choose a certain tray to print from?
Would the command be
Code:

The idea was that all workstations simply get announced this server and use whatever it offers. But I cannot get it to work. I cannot find any way to use any external server other than configuring a local server, which may use the remote queues, but still requires all printer drivers locally. Furthermore, I have to set up each remote queue explicitly, i.e. to me having the remote server makes no sense.

Ubuntu :: CUPS Server Printing Worked On Hardy Not Anymore In Karmic?

I have an ubuntu server with a printer plugged to it through USB. I used to set the server ip on the Printing panel to print remotelly to it, but it doesn't work anymore since I upgraded to karmic. I can see the printer in the printer panel, and I can even print a test page through the panel, but I can't print from any other application. When I come to the printing screen, the printer has the message retrieving information from printer and I can't print. I guess the cups server is working well as I can print the test page, and I used to print with hardy, looks like if the changes made in the printing panel don't have any effect on the system.

Server :: Red Hat 6.1 Server Backup On WinXP Client?

Sep 6, 2010

My office uses a local Linux server running Red Hat 6.1 for an ancient text-based accounting program. The client computers (about 5 or so) run WinXP pro and use Tinyterm emulator to log in to the server. One of the client computers (we'll call it client1) had a user in Windows configured to do scheduled backups of the Linux server. The office worker for client1 was instructed to log in to xp as the backup user and leave the pc on all night and it would backup the linux server, then it would copy that backup to an external hard drive, attached to client1.

The c: hard drive on client1 died and no backups were available. I have restored the computer with a fresh xp install, but I have no idea what method was used to back the server up. I'm sure samba was used but I cannot find any documentation or instructions left behind by whoever set the system up. I have the ip address of the server and have restored tinyterm to be able to log in from client1. I also have access to the command line on the server. I just need help with being able to back the linux server up from a windows xp client.

Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Printing - Serve As Printer Server Have An Error Message In Cups/error_log

Dec 28, 2010

I have been able (with some hair pulling and gnashing of teeth) to print from outside the LAN to the printer connected via USB to the desktop computer at home, until the last upgrade. The laptop will forst say the printer may not be connected, but eventually (usually) after a while says the job was sent to the printer. The log files on the desktop - serving as the printer server have an error message in cups/error_log that I am not familiar with, and don't believe I have seen before. I am sure if I could decipher that error and figure out how to change the behavior to get rid of it, it would once again work. Printing from within the LAN is a no-brainer as it has been for the last several releases. The error that I get when trying to print outside the LAN (via the internet) is:

cupsdAcceptClient: 12 from <WAN IP>:631 (IPv4) Unable to encrypt connection from <WAN IP> - GnuTLS internal error. I am missing something as far as authentication from the laptop to the desktop. how to fix it.

Server :: Ubuntu 10.10 Samba 3.3 And Windows 98 DOS Printing Works?

Apr 4, 2011

a customer is running an old DOS application to run their business using windows 98/XP workstations that run the DOS app. I configured a Redhat 7.1 samba server (with fault tolerant backup server) for them back in the early 2000s & its version of Samba 2.2, I eventually made it work with all of their systems for printing & secure file sharing ("secure" for them anyway). Fast forward to 2011 & they would like to replace the aging Redhat servers with Ubuntu 10.10. So I set that up & got the following components working with the default install + patches of Ubuntu (using apt-get install samba): Windows XP: 1.) Password protected share access. 2.) Can browse Samba from Network Neighborhood.

3.) Print from XP Windows to HP network printer through Samba. 4.) Print from XP DOS terminal to HP network printer through Samba. XP is pretty much ready to go. Now, Windows 98: 1.) Password protected share access. 2.) Can browse Samba from Network Neighborhood. (this was tough!). 3.) Print from XP Windows to HP network printer through Samba. Note: CANNOT Print from Windows 98 DOS terminal to HP network printer through Samba! When I setup the LPT1 from net use on DOS to point to the Samba share, I then test by running DOS Edit, typing test, & then File->Print. It states that it can't print to LPT1 and asks to Retry, Cancel or Exit. No errors are given on the Samba side & Windows 98 doesn't seem to have an Event Viewer to tell me what's wrong. The whole thing works with Redhat 7.1 Samba though. Good old Samba 2.2. SIGH. So what I did was use my VMware Workstation & built an Ubuntu 10.10 workstation with Samba, built an XP workstation & Windows 98 vm image. I didn't have network printing, so I setup CUPS-PDF to print to PDF files in Samba. As with the "production" installs of their business, I got everything working just fine except DOS LPT1 on Windows 98. So I can get the same error in a test environment basically & it's still puzzling....

CentOS 5 Server :: Setting Up CUPS (command Line) On New Server?

Mar 29, 2009

I was using Red Hat 7.3 forever and decided it was time for a change. I went to Fedora 10 but it was really buggy. CentOS 5.2 is VERY stable. Here is my problem. The server is command line only -- I tend to hate GUI"S.I setup Samba no problem disabling the ports needed through the firewall and that was straightforward.CUPS is a nightmare for me since CentOS locks down the cupsd.conf and then the firewall does its thing. I allowed port 631 through the firewall but then got lost on the cupsd.conf. It's been too long and the old redhat one won't work with CentOS (not surprising since it's a VERY old system) straight-forward CUPS tutorial for a command line interface. I just need it to be:

a) do this

b) do that

Fedora :: 5 Second Delay Printing From Cups?

Aug 26, 2010

Not sure if this is hardware or software so I am raising the question here. I have an Ithaca 280 printer that worked great on fedora 8 with cups 1.3.3. When I upgraded my server and installed Fedora 12 with cups 1.4.2 i noticed a 5 second delay between sending a print job to the printer and it actually printing. This issue doesnt happen with laser printers, just the ithaca thermal printer. I have tested this with 10 other ithaca 280 printers and all of them have the same result. I am using a raw driver, and it is an IP based printer setup for Jetdirect in cups. The setup is identical on a Fedora 8 server as it is on this Fedora 12 server. I have even taken the steps to upgrade to cups 1.4.4 just to see if it was corrected in a newer version, but the issue is still there. I have a utility that writes the raw text directly to the printer which i used to test that it wasnt an issue with the printer or its internal print server. That utility allows the document to print immediately.

what is causing this delay and how to correct it? If not, does anyone know how to print directly to the printer using cups instead of letting it go to the queue first like cups normally does for print jobs?
