I know there are permissions one can assign to certain files and folders, but this won't come in handy if you need quick access to a file -and as User I often do- and don't want to slow down getting root permissions. You know, just open-close-move on. Is there a way, as user, to assign a password to a file or a folder? It would make the job a lot easier and more efficient.
View 9 RepliesWhat's the easiest way to make a given file/folder (or multiple files) require a password upon opening moving copying etc, without encrypting the file/archive. The password should at least be manually defined upon establishing it, and preferably it could be modified.
I'm aware of the community belief that this is redundant. I don't want to know how to start from scratch a different way, or why I should or shouldn't do this or that. Just how to password lock a file/folder regardless of your feelings on the matter lol.
actually i upload a password protect folder software, but unfortunately it was a trial version which i didn't know . now i am unable to recover my files from that.

In linux if we put the executable file in bin folder, we can run this file with out specifying its path. Could anyone please tell the similar option in Windows OS.

I may have replaced the "pictures" folder tat was already on there, but I'm not sure if it was there in the first place. (Doesn't remember the "Are you sure you want to replace..." warning <.< >.>) I enabled hidden files, and there was a folder called .Trashes, instead of what you'd normally get. I copied my pictures onto my desktop, and then cleared the ones on the USB drive (left the folder). There was a folder named .000Trash-, or whatever it usually is. Only my pictures are in there. I'm confused, and don't tell me the pictures that were originally on the USB are gone forever.There's a tool for Windows, called Glary's Uilities that can get them back, supposedly. I'm trying to give myself access to /dev/ttyS0. This is because I'm developing code that uses a serial port. While I'm developing this code I don't want to be continually working as super user. I have the following information about /dev/ttyS0:

So as root I added myself (username freddy) to the group uucp. This is just temporary, for while I work on this code and try different stuff as user freddy. Once the code is established and I have a single program with a fixed name, I plan to give myself an entry in /etc/sudoers that will allow me to run the finished program.

The problem then is that now if I try to use /dev/ttyS0 I can't.

I thought that if I was a member of group uucp which is associated with /dev/ttyS0 that I would be given rw access to /dev/ttyS0. What am I missing here?

I was installing some stuff and now after the install. The look of my kde is now totally changed and konquerer won't load and vlc also changed but its working.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter upgrading to 11.04, I noticed something strange, being that when I want to drag a file or folder from one Nautilus folder window to another which is not visible, I can no longer hold the item over said folder's taskbar button and wait for it to appear. It just shows the + for copy, and when I let go (which I have no choice but to eventually do), it creates a launcher to that item (I assume it's doing that, and not actually copying there, but the + has me unsure).
I've looked in Nautilus's preferences to see if this is some new behaviour that I can revert back to, but could find nothing there.
I'm of course using the Classic desktop with bottom panel being the taskbar. If you know how I can rectify this, please let me know, as the times I would want to create a file or folder launcher without the usual hassle would be rare, but I am constantly dragging stuff from one folder to another, and it would be a real pain to have to line up source and destination folders each time.
