I am trying to install 11.2 on a Dell Poweredge 2550 - two processors,all scsi, raid disabled, ATI grahpics. Fails at "failure to mount clich file system" - reboot.
View 9 RepliesToshiba notebook is set up to triple boot win7, mepis 8.5 and os 11.3.Recent update of os11.3 left system with boot failure, "file not found".I booted mepis and used utility to reinstall grub, but no joy.
Appeared to install ok but on reboot, sda5 identified as 'mepis' not os11.3 and would not boot. Win7 & mepis boot ok.
Next, booted live Parted Magic and repaired as per another thread here, but again, no joy.NONE of the systems will boot.Rebooted mepis live cd and reinstalled grub again. Sda5 still identified as mepis and will not boot. Win7 & mepis boot ok.
On a Linux CD/DVD, there are compressed filesystem images for the live version for KDE or Gnome for example, but they have no extension, but they are clearly an image file ( compressed filesystem images for the live version before installation ) !!
I was wondering, How do I mount these compressed filesystem images, after I copy the ISO content of the CD/DVD on my system .... I want to edit some files or packages and make some changes, like if I want to customize a live version of gnome for example ! ... ( I know you might be tempted to tell me to use KIWI etc to customize etc ..... ) ... but I want to be able to mount the compressed file system image, then edit it for reading and writing while it is in a subdirectory on its own ... i want to open it ! ... is there a way to do this ??? ... these type of files have no extension ...
i can open this compressed filesystem image then to edit for read & write ... before I roll it back again ..... If and when I succeed .... what should I watch out for ? ... will the same compressed file image but slightly modified work again ?
PS. that same question could be kind of translated or be extended like : how do I use unionfs/squashfs programs on the command line to mount these image files with no extension for read & write mode ???
I have one hard disk for my root partition and a disk array on a separate mount point. I rebuilt my disk array, but I didn't delete my original mount points beforehand because I was hoping it would just "pick up". So now when I boot up, the OS tells me that the filesytem check fails because it can't find the array to map to the mount point. I know that I need to edit my /etc/fstab and remove the line that defines my mount point on the disk array. But it appears to be read only filesystem when I am in repair mode. I can't force the write with vi.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was running openSUSE 11.2 on a Dell Studio with a mirrored disk. The upgrade to 11.3 went well it seemed until it got to the point of installing the new bootloader. Then it couldn't mount /boot. Otherwise it seemed to go OK though.It completed and rebooted. I see a very brief flash of the word GRUB on the reboot, but then the screen blanks and I get the BIOS messages again.How can I now install GRUB so that I can boot. I had a similar issue with 11.2 in the past, and was able to repair GRUB using 11.2's DVD's "Repair Installation" which had tools to reinstall GRUB.11.3's DVD is missing this option.I'd prefer not to do a fresh install as then I will have a lot of OS setup to repeat (Samba, Apache, Trac, etc.....)

I shut it down and rebooted again, also tried the failsafe mode, but it keeps going to the command line. Looked in the BIOS and it didn't see my hard drive settings. But I can see the HD fine when I booted using the live CD (that's how I am able to post here
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a mounting rack in which I try to plug in various HDDs. Now, all of them have vfat. Blkid returns something like:
/dev/sda7: UUID="4B16-F1E8" TYPE="vfat" The UUID looks abnormally short to me. I found no way to obtain a longer, typical UUID, and when I set Yast2 partitioner to mount by UUID, it sees and it successfully uses the short UUID. Yast2 even adds it to /etc/fstab like this: UUID=4B16-F1E8 /windows/C vfat users,gid=users,umask=0002,utf8=true 0 0 However, this short UUID is useless in /etc/fstab. It doesn't work at boot time and it doesn't work when I try to mount manually. xxxxx:~ # mount /windows/C mount: special device UUID=4B16-F1E8 does not exist. Also, one cannot find these short UUIDs in /dev/disk/by-id/.
For a billion reasons, I really want to mount these FAT32 partitions by UUID. Do I have any way to do it?
I got three times fsck failure during system booting, fixed issue by reinstall whole suse last two times, this time I really do not want reinstall.
View 4 Replies View RelatedUbuntu has been reporting a System error problem but when it try's send a report to your servers, it fails due to it's failure of identifying the packet id, i honestly have no idea of how to go about fixing this problem or even identifying the packet that's broken, please do help, as now my Apache server's not working properly, and a couple of other programs are getting affected by this, event installing and updating s an issue.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to update my OS from Opensuse 11.2 to 11.3 using the installation DVD (checked OK). Everything is OK during the installation process until the message "System is going to reboot" is displayed with a countdown : when the countdown is finished, the screen becomes black and the screensaver starts, but the system does not reboot. When I reboot manually, after selecting "Opensuse 11.3 desktop" on the first menu, the screen becomes black and the screensaver starts.
So the installation seems incomplete and I do not know how to finalize it. When I select the failsafe option on the first menu, it seems to work but some behaviours are quite "strange"... When I choose update instead of installation at the beginning, the behaviour is the same.
I do not know if it is linked but the firmware tests started from the installation DVD show the following errors :
Memory tests are OK.
I have a problem that I can't login to SUSE in graphical mode. I get to the login prompt; enter my username and password; SUSE starts to do the login but then crashes back to the login prompt. Looking in /var/log/messages doesn't tell me anything useful. However, I noticed that my SUSE system partition is full (at 20 GB). So I think this is the culprit that is stopping my login.
Unfortunately, I can't extend my system partition as it is ext4 (SUSE default) but parted (from SUSE 11.2 live cd) complains that it can't do anything with ext4.

I can select Ubuntu 10.10 OS from the grub menu, but it no longer loads? It scrolls through some lines, including mount failure and "No such file or directory." before halting below :

The same happens when recovery is selected.
Have just assembled a new computer and thought I would install the 64 bit version of openSUSE 11.2 in a "Windows free zone". After a hiccup or two I have managed to get a system of sorts running but on trying to copy files from my old computer(via a memory stick) it tells me that Vfat is an unknown file system.On my old computer I am running 32 bit openSUSE 11.2 as a dual boot system with Windows XP and have no problems moving files between the two different file systems.Is it possible to get a 64 bit file system to read 32 bit file system drives and if so how do I do it?
View 7 Replies View RelatedMaybe this is the wrong place to ask, but I'm trying to install opensuse 11.4 (64-bit) in virtual box, the installation went smoothly (no visible error messages). But the boot seem to get stuck. If anyone has got an idea what it could be, it would mean a lot. These are the last prints in the log before it gets stuck:

My SD card is recognised by OS 11.3 if it is inserted at boot up. If I remove it and reinsert it, the devise monitor states 'no devices plugged in'. This is a problem that I have also had (and reported in these forums) with 11.0, 11.1, 11.2.Now I notice that there is a section for 'removable devices' in the system configuration. But even if I click the box 'enable automatic mounting of removable media' and the sub-box 'automatically mount removable media when attached' the SD card is not remounted, there remain 'no devices plugged in'.

So I booted it up with the install disc and got into the rescue mode but I am not sure how or which system to mount to change the root password I tried sda and sda1 but it errored out with unknown system type
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Lynx 10.04 amd64. Twice now, my entire file system has become unusable -- each time after a short power outage (2 seconds).
In the first setup, I had two primary partitions: 1) / that was ext4; 2) /home that was ext4.
In the second setup, I changed the /home to ext3.
Both times, after booting up following the power outage, I received a message saying that "serious errors" were found in /home. But, after several reboots, I was able to login and use the system. Then, some time later, I would started getting "Read Only" messages when trying to write to the file system.
fsck gave the following message: "/home terminated with status 4". I received numerous "I/O error" on sda messages.
My question: Is this vulnerability due to using ext4 or is it related more to something else in Lynx 10.04? Further, what can I do (other than buying a power backup device) to avoid my file system becoming unusable after a power outage?
Why do I keep getting .gvfs (gnome virtual file system) file appearing as corrupt in /~/usr directory, I can get rid of it by unmounting, but it re-appears later on. It is causing problems as it interrupts my backups (which are automated) with an error message,ListError .gtk-bookmarks/.gvfs [Errno 13] Permission denied: '/home/jimt/.gvfs'

I've just upgraded to 11.3 (64 bit) and the nfs client does not quite work. I have 3 mounts I try to make, and 2 out of 3 work. The third seems to mount, but shows an empty directory. There are no errors in /var/log/messages on the 11.3 client or the server. The only difference between the 3 mounts that I can see is that the failing mount is of an xfs system. The other two happen to be ext3. Is that visible to the nfs client? Or is that a red herring? I can still mount all 3 just fine from my other opensuse 11.2 systems.
For info, the server is running opensuse 10.3...

I've tried to get an opensuse box I have to share a directory via NFS. I've failed each time, but I thought that the third time, I'd enlist some help from the forums, if I could. how do I know that the nfs server and not the client is the problem? Short answer is: I don't! That's why nfs (and many netwrk problems) are laborious, you're troubleshooting needs to take place at both source and desitination. Next question, what do I have set up so far? Well, I did download the nfs server kernel stuff (two months back) and /etc/init.d/nfsserver start seems to get set up OK. No errors and the daemons nfsd, idmapd, mountd area all running. So, I *think* that part is OK. I have the share set up properly in /etc/exportfs and have "exportfs -r" it.
OK, now onto the trickier stuff: the client and iptables. On the client pinging to the nfserver box is perfect, and I have rpcbind running. the reported error is "mount.nfs: mount system call failed" though from experience nfs errors don't mean a whole lot.However, I will go off and check now and see if I need a mountd running on client-side too.Then there's iptables .... ouch, that could be a long and painful trek. I don't see any specific ports being blocked, and it's the iptables that the default v11.2 opensuse came with. I did turn them off and the problem was the same, so whether wishfl thinking or not, I'm hoping it's not an iptables issue.
I'm using OpenSuse 11.4 (x86_64) with KDE 4.
It's not possible to mount external USB (ntfs) disks with a non-root user using the Device Notifier or Dolphin. The error is:
Could not mount the following device: MyBook 2
org.freedesktop.UDisks.Error.PermissionDenied: Authentication is required
It is a permission problem; running Dolphin under root and clicking the USB disk mounts it without problems. The same should be possible to an ordinary user. The Update Applet does not work for the same reason (I can only install updates using yast).
Of course, I googled the error and there were a number of possible solutions, which I all tried. That includes allowing the action in the policy and adding the user in AdminIdentities local-authority. The file /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/org.freedesktop.udisks.policy contains "yes" for every option. Needless to say it doesn't make sense and I'm out of options.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI am saddened that I can't install any Linux distro with ease on my HP m8530f computer which runs on a m2n78-la motherboard. It has a Phenom CPU, 6 SATA ports and probably a fakeRaid (at least that's what I guess is causing problem). The Fedora 14 Desktop install goes all the way to the end and then I get a fail message due to not being able to mount /dev/mapper/xxxxx.
P.S. the motherboard only has SATA mode or disabled for HardDrive mode and no any other options. Seems like this is an HP custom made motherboard from Asus hence the limited options in Bios setup.

We have a four socket amd machine, running barcelona processors, with 64gb ram.The system runs for extended periods just fine when the system is running up to or below the 64gb memory limit. A typical load on the machine has short periods where the machine uses heavy amounts of swap space (30+ Gb). We have a swap partition of around 96Gb. When we push the machine into heavy swapping, the machine will fail within 24hrs. Has anyone experienced this problem and is there a solution other than buying more physical memory? Or am I wrong and maybe the physical memory is the issue? I thought maybe it was the memory itself, and after stripping the memory down, I get the same problem...failure upon heavy swapping
View 7 Replies View RelatedBeen running Fedora for a while now, iterating up through versions to 12. Decided to to a clean install upgrade to 14. Apparently, bug mistake. Everything seems to be progressing fine, but after 'transferring install image to harddrive', the 'Starting Install Process' fails withsystem-config-lvm-1.1.15-1.fc14.narach.rpm cannot be opened.I have no idea what to do with this. I've reburned the install disk a couple of times (and checked the HASH) -- no apparent problems with the install media.Tech details: x86_64 install on a multi-pro box with a 3ware raid 5 controller (5 disk). I've never run LVMs. Two simple hard partitions (/ and /home). Fedora 12 installed with no problems (as did every other version of Fedora <=12).---------- Post added at 12:29 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:54 AM ----------Some additional information:1 tried Fedora 13 -- wouldn't even recognize my disks. Installer hung at trying to find basic storage. Not a good sign2 tried my old Fedora 12 install DVD -- again, worked like a charm. Expect that F12 repos are now closed.
So, it seems as if some 'change' between F12 and F13/14 has made some part of the install process choke on my 'hardware' (I'm guessing something related to 3ware RAID card). ---------- Post added at 01:51 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:29 PM ----------I just tried CentOS 5.5 (x86_64). Also installed fine. For some reason, Fedora >= 13 absolutely won't let me get past the problem noted in the OP. I suppose I could go with CentOS (for long EOL support), but I need some of the newer compiler/dev libs in Fedora 14 for some projects I'm working on.
I am so confused! I changed my security profile to 'paranoid' (i'm a linux noob' and accidentally locked my self out of everything! Including su, sudo, YaST, etc. (openSUSE 11.1)

But suddenly I found that file system is corrupted after every reboot (It does not depend on what I use and what the way I use - reboot, shutdown -r now or even just poweroff - everything follow to:

I just got openSUSE 11.2 set up on my home server. The machine has two 2TB HDDs, the first (/dev/sda1) is partitioned thusly:
10GB /
1GB swap
1.82TB /home (/dev/md1 in RAID1 array)

I'm trying to install Ubuntu alongside windows 7 on my machine, and currently I am having difficulty doing so.Upon initial boot of the LiveCD,it says the installer has encountered an unrecognized error and just goes straight to desktop environment. From there, I can restart the installer just fine but here is where the trouble starts.
Currently, I have a 2TB RAID 0 array utilizing 4 500GB Seagate barracuda SATA II drives. The controller is an nForce 780a NVRaid. I currently have two NTFS partitions for windows. One 150GB primary partition for C:, and another 781GB D: for the storage of games, music and movies.When I try to manually setup the partitions in the Ubuntu installer, I do it like this.
- 200MB ext2 primary partition for /boot
- 150GB xfs logical partition for /
- approx 750GB xfs logical partition for /home (You've probably figured out I'm following the same C: and D: scheme as in windows)
- 8192 MB partition for swap
I then proceed with the install. I see the progress bar complete for the boot partition, but then at about 7% for / it stops and gives a message saying partition creation has failed. I even tried using different filesystems like ReiserFS and Ext4. Same thing every time. I am running a 64bit quadcore system BTW if that is of any importance.
