General :: Can't Boot From My Hard Disk / Unable To Restore GRUB - Fix It?
Feb 4, 2010After completing the installation of Fedora-FEL edition, I cant boot from my hard disk. "No bootable device found " error appears.
I have one Windows XP & 2 Linux installation in my disk.
I tried to restore grub using "setup (...)" command.but same error repeats.
Even I cant restore Windows XP using "fxmbr" command in... recovery console .
But I can boot from that drive by "chainloader" command in grub. code...
Running above command in grub terminal boots my hard disk ("hd1" is my "unbootable disk")

Aug 18, 2010Dual Booting my laptop and unable to change the Boot Records on the drive. Not because I dont know how, but my primary OS will fail to boot(win7).
I have drive partitioned as follows...
sda1 = Win7 system (default install)
sda2 = Win7 Main (default install)
sda3 = swap
sda4 = Extension (I think thats what its called)
sda5 = / (ext4)
What I need is a boot cd or perferably Grub installed on a 256MB Thumb drive with the options to load the installed system from sda5.

Jun 11, 2010I have installed latest kubuntu (10.04) on sda7, ext4 , and i selected the advanced feature of the installer to install kubuntu bootloader on sda7. 11.1 is on sda5 .First , it destroyed my 11.1 grub bootloader on mbr . I managed to restore it with the 11.1 installation DVD. Now i try to boot kubuntu from the sda7 bootloader, without success . I searched the forums and tried some hints i found but found no similar problems. Here are the different entries i tried on grub (mbr) , content of the /boot/grub/menu.lst :

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Boot Into The OS - Error 25 GRUB Stage 1.5 ?
Jul 31, 2009A few days ago I decided to ditch Windows for good. I read for hours about a Linux distro and settled on OpenSUSE.
I just need to say one thing. Linux is not for the feint of heart, and everywhere I turn (forums), I see computers riddled with error messages, frustrated people, and the list goes on.
I'm willing to work through this though since I feel that the benefits will outweigh anything that Microsoft can offer, so here goes.
Upon installing the new build of OpenSUSE, I encountered an error message that was fixed by hitting retry (I forgot the name, but I remember it being something like Etk3 or something of the sort).
My issue now is not being able to boot into the OS. I'm getting Error 25 from GRUB on stage 1.5
I've installed 11.1 over my Windows XP partition. I want XP no more. Additionally, I read the sticky and followed all the instructions. I also selected the KDE desktop (I still don't know the difference between that and GNOME despite Googling it several times).

I guess the chainloader boots 1st ufs slice and ignores the other. I've installed GrUB in FreeBSD and when I try to boot with different menu 'configfile /boot/grub/menu.lst' it returns error 17. This is probably due to inability reading ufs.
OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Re-load Grub Following Windows 7 SP1 Upgrade On Dual-Boot?
Apr 28, 2011A few days ago I went to perform the Service Pack 1 Upgrade for Win 7. This crashed out with an error. On researching the problem I found a solution to fix the problem by marking the Windows partition as active. I did this (via Computer Mgmt -> Disk Mgmt). This allowed the SP1 upgrade to work, however on reboot I got an error BOOTMGR missing. This I rather rashly resolved by using the Windows 7 install DVD in Recovery mode to reinstall the Windows Boot manager via bootrec /Fixboot I thought I would then be able to use the Opensuse 11.2 install disk to fix grub.
I use the Opensuse install disk and select Repair system -> Expert Mode -> Install New Boot Loader then select Other -> Reread Configuration from Disk. This adds Win 7 back into the grub menu. I then select OK and get the message "the bootloader was installed successfully". The problem then comes when I click my way through OK and Next to finish the install. At the end of the process I get the message "An error occurred during the installation" and I'm no further forward.
FYI the PC has a single SATA disk installed partitioned as follows:
dev/sda1 100Mb Win System Parkition
dev/sda2 Windows NTFS
dev/sda3 Windows FAT
OpenSUSE Install :: Backup / Restore And GRUB 11.3 X86-64?
Nov 5, 2010I do regular full and incremental backups using dar. All disk volumes are labeled and mounted by label. There is no other operating system installed. I built a new system but due to having to RMA a disk, I built the openSUSE system on a disk from the backup cycle. This Maxstor disk has problems which is why it was moved into an external box and the backup system. I now have a replacement disk and wish to replace the Maxstor before it dies. I initially tried a disk to disk clone with clonezilla but this died complaining that a small target partition was smaller than the source partition. It had created the partition and the start and end sectors were identical. There are no problems with the new disk.
I decided that it would be a good opportunity to test a full system disk restore from the backups. I have in the past restored individual files and partitions but have never restored onto a bare boot disk. I have restored and labeled all 6 partitions. The partition containing / has been marked as active. /boot is included in the partition containing /. fstab is valid, menu.lst is valid, device.map needs editing but this is not a problem.
What do I need to do to make this disk bootable. I have looked through the GRUB documentation but if you try some standard GRUB commands in 11.3 you get messages saying don't do this use YAST. I have seen other suggestions ranging from trying to start the not supported system repair option to using dd to copy the MBR which seemed to trash the partitions in the users extended partition.
The YAST bootloader displays "boot from the root partition". I assume that this is currently what is happening rather than what YAST thinks might be a good idea for next time. I suspect that all I have to do is dd the first 512 bytes of the root partition. If this is the case I can add this to the backup process. While I automate backups I do not automate restores. Each restore tends to be different and I am not sure of the best way getting grub to work on a bare disk restore.

Jan 29, 2010My problem is that I have installed openSUSE 11.2 on a laptop with Windows 7 already installed. Yast resized my Windows partitions, which seemed to upset Windows as I had to go to my Windows Recovery Disc to restore it. When Windows was restored it did something so that GRUB no longer appeared. So I did a system recovery for openSUSE 11.2 which then removed Windows 7 from GRUB! Now I'm trying to restore Windows 7 and configure GRUB so that Windows and openSUSE will stop fight for boot supremacy and play nice with each other. Here are my Yast2 Boot Loader settings:

Apr 13, 2011I installed Gnome 3 on a free partition of my netbook but I lost the boot to my suse kde...(MBR). I launched a live CD on USB but cannot restore Grub; the only way is to reinstall the KDE. Then it boots but does not show Gnome 3. Why the installer does not take into account both OS?

I wanted to work with KDE and SUSE so I bought the Linux Format magazine with the DVD 126 which had SUSE 11.1 with the KDE desk top. I have a Toshiba L455 laptop and had windows 7 on 110 gb and had ubuntu 8.04 on 50 gb and ubuntu 9.10 ob 48 gb. I had ran the installer and it identified both linux systems and I selected to install SUSE in the space allocated to 8.04. It only boots to suse with the option to select windows. It showes 9.10 mixed with suse. I have not used suse. Is there an uninstall that will allow me to start over with the installation after creating a partition first. How can I get 9.10 to boot or how can I recover data from it.

Apr 17, 2010I started another thread about this to get help booting into openSUSE after Fedora rewrote my bootloader and deleted all other entries. I managed to fix it but I never did find out why the following commands caused my system to boot to the grub shell instead of the grub menu.

Can anyone explain to me why these commands caused my system to boot directly to a grub shell? It's as if there were no /boot/grub/menu.lst files for it to use, but after I got everything back to normal, the files were still there.
If it helps, this is how the drive was setup before and now, except Fedora was on /dev/sda4 and has since been deleted.

General :: Grub Unable To Install Xp (or Boot Any Cd/dvd)?
Mar 30, 2010i had installed linux on my 40 IDE hard disk drive now i want to install xp on then linux, but i am not able to boot any cd now, that grub problem is coming again and again.THIS IS WHAT I DID BUT COULD NOT FIND THE SOLUTION1.I formatted entire hard disk by connecting it to second computer fully formatted took me almost 1.20 minutes to format still nothing happend to that grub problemthe only way i could install xp on that 40 gb ide hd was to connect it to 2nd pc and install xp on it,but then when i connected this hd to first one i could install linux on it but xp was giving some popups windows as now the motherboard had changed on this 1st pc

When i googled this message it came out that this has got to do with linux (i have never used linux and i formated my disc once or twice since i bought it so i found it very strange that this problem is related to linux).Anyway,i found out that grub is the problem and that it isnt a big deal to solve it.I downloaded Ubuntu,booted it from the cd and followed the instructions...I typed in grub (in the terminal) and it told me to download it so i typed in "get-apt grub install" or something like that and it all went well,i was now in the grub directory.Then i typed " find /boot/grub/stage1" and it told me that the file was not found.
I have tried everything,i have downloaded the super rescue cd the fix the problem but i have still the same problem.

Dec 12, 2009i have Windows 2000, ubuntu 9.10 and openSUSE 11.2 on my system. I am using GRUB that came with openSUSE to boot all three. It used to work fine, but my Ubuntu started messing up, so i re-installed Ubuntu. I then changed using Kwrite what i think i needed to change in order to boot Ubuntu but it will not run.

Mar 11, 2011A few days ago I installed my first Linux product, which is Debian 6.0, and I installed the GRUB booting device on my main boot record, as it was suggested that it was a harmless step to take. Unfortunately, some quirk in my system made GRUB believe that I had XP when in fact I have Vista, so the options I have now are to boot Debian or to boot XP which is not on my computer. In other words, I have to get rid of GRUB now, but I'm realizing that he's not such an easy customer to kick out. I have moved my Linux installation to another drive, but the old GRUB always stays in place, and my Vista is stuck there frozen for eternity. So after considering all kinds of possibilities, I have come to the conclusion that the easiest way to restore my original boot record would probably be to find its backup copy that I assume the installation program made, and to copy it back into the right address at the beginning of the disk. I don't have the Vista recovery CD, so I really have to do this manually. So now my questions are these: did the installation program make a copy of the boot track, and if so, where did he put it and under what name, and finally, what command can I use from within the Debian terminal, which is now my only tool left, to copy the content of thesaid file into the first 512 bytes of the hard drive? I know that would be a simple matter for any serious geek, I guess I must be a little rusty. Anybody feel up to it?

160 GB (Contained Windows 7)
500 GB
I copied entire 160 gb as an mirrored image to 500GB HDD using Acronis Disk Director. I deleted entire 160 GB HDD.. Removed the 500 GB HDD and kept it seperate.. Installed ClearOS Enterprise 5.2 Worked a little bit... The i wanted to delete ClearOS.. So i connected 500GB HDD and booted again in Acronis Disk director Formated the entire 160GB HDD.. Copied back the entire 160 from 500GB HDD.. Now my sytem refuses to boot... Just 4 letters "GRUB" appears on the screen... I tried booting using XP CD.. It gives a blue screen.. I tried Windows 7 CD.. It says unable to fix due to MBR problem..

Mar 11, 2010I have an old Dell Dimension 4500 that, until recently, had 2 hard drives. One drive is running Xubuntu Koala and the other was running XP. I had set up Xubuntu to run LVM.
After needing XP again for a small project I tried reinstalling XP, got disk errors, took the drive out to just have Xubuntu, and now when I boot I get "Error loading operating system".
I have tried restoring GRUB from a Live CD with no help. Everyplace I look on the net talks about restoring GRUB after installing Windows on another drive. I'm trying to get GRUB working again after removing the XP drive.

But when I want to use XP (yeah, sometimes I do that...), in about 40% of all cases it won't be loaded when chosen in GRUB. Just a black screen without anything else.Then I need to restart and in the 2nd trial it works!

OpenSUSE Install :: Grub Cannot Install Boot Loader On HP ProBook With 500 GB HD
Aug 20, 2011I got an HP ProBook 4520s that comes with 500 GB with Windows 7.
It comes with 4 partitions: SYSTEM, the main Windows partition, HP Recovery and HT Tools.
I tried to have OpenSuse installation to resize the Windows larger partition but it said that it couldn't with this message:
"The partition on disk /dev/sda is not readable by the partitioning tool parted, which is used to change the partition table.
You can use the partitions on disk /dev/sda as they are. You can format them and assign mount points to them, but you cannot add, edit, resize, or remove partitions from that disk with this tool."
So I resized the Windows partition from Windows 7 and added 3 partitions on the empty space for Linux: /, swap and /home. Still OpenSuSE installation has shown this warning message:
"The bootloader is installed on a partition that does not lie entirely below 128 GB. The system might not boot if BIOS support only lba24 (result is error 18 during grub MBR)."
I configured OpenSuSE installation to install on those partitions but Grub could not install the boot loader with this message: "grub> setup --stage=/boot/grub/stage2 --force-lba (hd0,2) (hd0,2)
Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition grub> quit"
I already tried this in OpenSuSE 11.4 but I suspected it needed newer parted and grub versions, so I also tried OpenSuSE 12.1 milestone 3 with the same results.
The installation finishes but no Grub boot menu appears, it goes to Windows as if no Linux was installed, although the installed version is there in the 3 partitions that were created on Windows, I just cannot make them boot.
