May 22, 2011I'm trying to get a TP-Link TL-WN821N WiFi USB dongle to work. I bought it because I thought it was based on the Atheros ar9170 chip (which is supported in Squeeze), but I've since learnt that it was based on the ar9271, which is only supported from kernel v2.6.36 on. I've read several threads on the subject, but I'm still confused about what I should exactly do. Since it is stuff that can potentially make the partition unbootable, I prefer to ask rather than to tinker.
I've read that upgrading the kernel would do the trick. The Liquorix kernel is especially recommended in one of those threads. However Liquorix only supports Sid and Testing. Apparently, you still can install it by fetching gcc 4.5 from the Sid repository, then install it... I'm a bit wary of screwing things up though... Another route appears to be the compat-wireless tool. I've downloaded the latest 2.6.32 release of compat-wireless (see here), but there's no reference to the ar9271 in the README. Is it appropriate nevertheless (they refer to an online list of supported drivers that was updated after the release... not sure what to make of it)? Otherwise, can I install the so-called "bleeding-edge compat-wireless" with a 2.6.32 kernel? BTW, I know that I'll also need the ath9k_htc firmware to be installed.

Nov 10, 2010I am using an HP G60 laptop with a built in wireless NIC but am unable to get the wireless connection working. I have followed the advice in the sticky messages above and have included the information below. I know the wireless modem is working as I have got a spare USB wireless dongle running on the desktop (ironically - I can only get it working where it is not needed!!!). The same dongle will not work on the laptop. So it is a config thing and not a hardware issue On a trivial level, left clicking on the Network Manager icon shows the "enable wireless" greyed out. Desktop and laptop are running SuSE 11.3 and KDE4.4.4. I have tried the traditional method as well as knetwork manager and have no success with either. Here are the technical details. OpenSUSE Wireless :: RTL8191SE Driver On Compaq Presario CQ62 Doesn't Work With XP Driver
Oct 23, 2010No wireless networking. The ethernet works fine, and the wireless interface itself works well in Windows 7 (dual boot). Tried: Ndiswrapper, notoriously quirky, does not seem to work with the XP driver (the oldest driver available for the RTL8191SE). The linux driver offered on the manufacturer's website lacks any installation instructions. I have no clue how to install a linux driver. SUSE seems to have two network managers that are constantly complaining about control: Network Manager and Yast. Neither are great and I am left missing my Ubuntu.
However, my audio only seems to work on SUSE. I have tried almost every distro on this machine. Ubuntu lacked sound and wireless, Fedora played startup sounds, but would not play an mp3 or wav file (fiddling with the mixer did not help). And Fedora also lacked wireless support. PCLinuxOS, my favorite, lacked sound and wireless. Tried some oldies too. ELE, DSL, Puppy, Ubuntu Netbook remix, Vector, Browserpuppy, Crunchbang, Cruncheee (just for experimental sakes) and probably others I am not remembering. So far, installing a free linux distro has cost me 14 dvd-R's and countless hours of installing, reformatting and reinstalling. Part of me really wanted crunchbang to work, as I love the minimalism and blacked-out theme.
I need wireless network access. The wireless light remains red in Linux and pressing the key does nothing to start the device. In Windows 7 it always lights white and works perfectly. Why hasn't SUSE adopted a gui for ndiswrapper? Other distros have it. Why is my brand new laptop, which is by no means abnormal in make or configuration, not 100% supported natively by any Linux distro? I just updated to the new kernel yesterday. So I should be running the most modern operating system available. Yet good-ol Windows 7 is my only fully functional environment.
OpenSUSE Hardware :: Radeon Driver Opengl Support ( Lack Of )?
Sep 20, 2010I'm an owner of a ATI mobility radeon X1300 card. Since ATI tagged my card as legacy, i'm stuck with the open source radeon drivers. Wich doesn't bother me, as i know they are slower and openGL support doesn't equal fglrx. What does bother me is that the current version 7.9 dev. claims to have full opengl support up to 2.1. I'm trying to use a extention that is part of the openGL version 1.3 and it's failing. This is a known issue for a long time now and it really disappoints me. "Compressed textures" is what i'm talking about.
Is there any way to make sure that drivers aren't tagged with something they support if they obviously don't? I guess the KDE4 kwin vs drivers thing is the same as i'm trying to say now. Drivers should be documented with what they effectively support and not what they should support. What can I do to make this public to xorg developers? I could only think about posting this here as i have no idea where to put it elsewere. Could someone please point me in the right direction to where i should send this complaint?

Jul 10, 2011I'm trying to find out when QME2572 (Qlogic) card became support by the kernel. We have a RHEL 5.1 system that is moving to new hardware, however the kernel at this release doesn't support the new hardware, due to the Qlogic card change. I tired the Redhat KB and Bugzilla. Is there a Kernel change list etc I can search. Never really played around with the kernel too much so I'm just after some pointers for looking up this information. Offically its not supported until Redhat 5.3, I'm trying trying to research kernel info so I can tell the customer they have to upgrade.

Apr 26, 2010This is just to report that I've got 3D support successfully enabled on my Mobility Radeon HD3200 chip with the open source driver on openSUSE 11.2. I did this to replace the proprietary fglrx driver that has already been installed for quite some time on my system.
Uninstalled fglrx, and here we go... Basically what I did was to get the latest X.Org server (1.8) and Mesa from Index of /repositories/X11:/XOrg/openSUSE_11.2 I changed all the corresponding system packages to the versions in that repository. I noticed that I cannot get any 3D support when pairing the last X server with the updated openSUSE 11.2 kernel (2.6.31.12_0.2). With RadeonHD driver it gives me no acceleration at all (No DRI), perhaps it is still intentionally disabled to prevent lockups in r600 cards. With Radeon KDE wouldn't start.
So to get usable driver support I have to update the stock kernel to the one in Index of /repositories/Kernel:/HEAD/openSUSE_11.2 I installed the 2.6.34-rc5-22 kernel and reboot. Immediately I notice that KMS is working, but I could not get DRI to work, presumably caused by the drm being unable to locate two related firmware files (it is there in the kernel, just doesn't know why it is not being loaded). Other than that I do not know why I can't get any acceleration with KMS on. To workaround I passed the 'nomodeset' parameter to the kernel to run in UMS mode instead, and voila! with UMS 2D + 3D accelerations are working. I can enable kwin effects just fine.
Since this is a laptop I need suspend & resume and power management working. Good news is s2ram works perfectly with extra parameter. And all the new Radeon power management options: DynamicPM, ClockGating and ForceLowPowerMode can be enabled just fine! (For UMS you need to generate a xorg.conf and put those options in)Performance is good. So far it's faster than fglrx in some areas and slower in some other area. Now this is truly amazing!

The problem might be derived from the fact I had to install openSUSE in Kernel (F6) > Safe Mode. If I need to install more things, please let me know ASAP! I am wired to my ethernet until then, which means I can't move from this spot until my wireless is working!

Mar 20, 2011I recently upgraded to OpenSUSE 11.4 GNOME on my ancient Compaq Armada E500 (Pentium II processor w/512MB of RAM) and now I'm trying to install my wireless driver with ndiswrapper. I've done this a couple of times before, but I'm having trouble getting ndiswrapper to find my driver. The driver is located in a folder on my desktop, but when I type the command 'ndiswrapper -i home/edwin/Desktop/WPC54G_40826/LSTINDS.INF' I get a message that there is no such file or directory at ndiswrapper's location, which is usr/sbin/ndiswrapper. So how do I get ndiswrapper either to look in the directory where the file is located or get a copy of LSTINDS.INF into the usr/sbin/ directory, which must be accessed as root?

Apr 29, 2011I know WEP is frowned upon and enverone should be using WPA. And my hostapd AP is working with WPA clients. However, I would like to alow some older clients that can only "talk" WEP to connect. All my attempts so far have failed! Can anyone point me in the right direction? The hostapd.conf file comments suggests that hostapd can support WEP. There are no contraindications or flags that I can find in the defconfig file that suggest that a WEP module needs to be complied-in to the final make.

Nov 8, 2010I have only just got my first netbook and when I first installed 11.2 on it it would detect local networks and ask if I wanted to use any of them. Since they belonged to other people and I use a wired connection at home, I declined. I then took my netbook on travels and tried to connect to freely available networks there, but to my surprise it no longer detected them. I tried to go through YAsT and see what needs to be changed but no matter what I tried the wireless option was never offered again.
I have now come back and decided to get to the bottom of this. Here is what I get from iwlist scan:lo Interface doesn't support scanning eth0 Interface doesn't support scanning.It is as if there has never been a wireless capability. Can anyone advise on what to do to fix this?

Feb 2, 2010I had a problem with using ndiswrapper to install Windows driver on Netgear WN511TA wireless adapter card. Problem solved by replacing Netgear WN511TA with Airlink101 AWLC6080 PCMCIA wireless adapter to work in my triple-boot XP Pro/Ubuntu Karmic/openSUSE 11.2 Toshiba laptop and using the latest Linux driver version 2.3.0.0 dated January 29, 2010 from Ralinktech site. I followed driver instruction in a Ubuntuforums tutorial (Howto: Ralink RT2860(m) PCI(e) RT2860...on Intrepid).
I am wondering if I can use the same Linux driver (RT2860sta) for openSUSE 11.2 on my triple-boot XP Pro/Karmic/openSUSE laptop, ie. copying over instead of building and compiling driver from source again, because I don't quite understand the build instruction given in the README file of Ralink's Linux driver file. Specifically, I don't know how to "define the GCC and LD (?) of the target machine, and define the compiler flags CFLAGS(?), modify your need (?)", etc. I already have gcc, cpp and make installed on the Ubuntu and openSUSE parts of my machine. I did try ndiswrapper in openSUSE but it doesn't work for the Windows version of the latest Ralink driver (error: invalid driver rt2860.inf).

Oct 26, 2009I put together a step-by-step guide of how I installed openSUSE 11.1 on my ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005HA Netbook. I planned on going back and re-installing using my own guide to check for mistakes, etc. but I never seem to get around to it, so I'll just post what I have and let you guys comment if you run into issues. Side notes: This guide assumes you want to wipe out Windows XP and run only openSUSE. Sorry, I'm a Gates hater.
I still haven't figured out how to configure the function keys support for volume controls and wireless. I'm hoping the "eeepc kernel module" mentioned by malcolmlewis here: Suse on my Asus 1005HA - openSUSE Forums will do the trick.

I'm not familiar with a procedure that doesn't require some level of device recognition.
