Debian :: USB-adapter With The Chipset Atheros AR9271?
Mar 29, 2011I am preparing to install Debian. I use an USB-adapter for wireless network access, the chipset of the network card in the adapter is "Atheros AR9271". Using this adapter is my only means of accessing the internet.
For some reason I had a hunch that my adapter might not be supported in Debian. I started searching around and found that quite a few people have been having some difficulties installing it to work in Debian. So, when I will have installed Debian there seems to be a significant risk I won't be able to go online.
Since I don't have any other way of connecting to the internet, thus no other network card and no parallel computer to use, I will get in trouble when I have to try to get my adapter to work with Debian. That is to say, it will be impossible to search for solutions on Google, ask for help online etc. I want to forestall such a situation. Hence a few questions:
1) What exactly will I have to do in order to be able to use the adapter with Debian?
2) Is there any way of doing it without going online after I have finished installing Debian? I'm thinking about if it would, for example, be possible to include any required files in the installation package I will use to install Debian?

Mar 3, 2011I have a Toshiba MX35 laptop it's a little old but does the job. I'm have a problem getting the wireless to work. I can boot a live CD either Ubuntu 10.10 or Fedora 14 and they will see the wireless card. The card is Atheros Communications Inc. Atheros AR5001X+ Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01).
I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed and that is the OS that is having the problem seeing the wireless. The computer will not handle Ubuntu 10.10 (at least it won't handle the desktop effects under Ubuntu 10.10) but handles them just fine under 9.10 and that's why I have 9.10 installed. I really need the Wifi to work because I'm going to travel in a few days.

May 22, 2011I'm trying to get a TP-Link TL-WN821N WiFi USB dongle to work. I bought it because I thought it was based on the Atheros ar9170 chip (which is supported in Squeeze), but I've since learnt that it was based on the ar9271, which is only supported from kernel v2.6.36 on. I've read several threads on the subject, but I'm still confused about what I should exactly do. Since it is stuff that can potentially make the partition unbootable, I prefer to ask rather than to tinker.
I've read that upgrading the kernel would do the trick. The Liquorix kernel is especially recommended in one of those threads. However Liquorix only supports Sid and Testing. Apparently, you still can install it by fetching gcc 4.5 from the Sid repository, then install it... I'm a bit wary of screwing things up though... Another route appears to be the compat-wireless tool. I've downloaded the latest 2.6.32 release of compat-wireless (see here), but there's no reference to the ar9271 in the README. Is it appropriate nevertheless (they refer to an online list of supported drivers that was updated after the release... not sure what to make of it)? Otherwise, can I install the so-called "bleeding-edge compat-wireless" with a 2.6.32 kernel? BTW, I know that I'll also need the ath9k_htc firmware to be installed.

Can I download the latest and greatest madwifi drivers, compile them and use them while running from the LiveCD image?

Feb 26, 2010I recently switched from Windows XP to a clean install Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10 but it seems to be quite a problem to get the wifi up and running. In Windows the nearby network all appeared in network connections but the same section in Ubuntu is empty. So I decided to go with the ndiswrapper guide to solve the problem with an unclaimed driver. After an entire day messing with my computer I'm still not close... Below follows excerpts taken from the Ndiswrapper guide with posted results from my computer. "ndiswrapper won't work until it thinks that your Windows drivers have been properly installed and that they are the appropriate ones for your wireless card. You can run the command: ndiswrapper -l"

It seems like the network is disabled or unclaimed or both. What to do? I'm stuck after spending an entire day trying to install the wifi. I had no problems in Windows XP but it seems to be quite impossible in Ubuntu.

But now I have nuked that installation and replaced it with FC10. Network Manager is nice, and I would like to use it. And it kind-of works. Network Manager recognizes my router and all my neighbor's routers, but I can't connect.

Jan 11, 2010I spent days trying to figure out how to get my atheros AR928x 802.11n wireless card to work in Ubuntu. The card worked perfect in Windows 7 but the connection kept dropping in Ubuntu. It would find my router and connect with 60% signal for about 5 seconds, then fall down to about 25% signal and then cut out altogether. After searching for days to find a solution, I finally figured it out and figured Id post it here to let everyone else in the same boat have a working wireless too!
I found this solution from:[URL].. This solution is for JAUNTY (Ubuntu 9.04), so if you are running Jaunty, you can just follow that post. If you are using Karmic (Ubuntu 9.1), you can follow this tutorial I'm posting. It's pretty simple: First, make sure you got all your files up to date. Type in a terminal:
sudo apt-get update Let that run, and once its done, type into terminal:
sudo apt-get upgrade
Once that finished, restart your computer. Again open up terminal and type:
sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-karmic
If you are using Jaunty, instead of karmic type in jaunty, if you use another version of ubuntu, you can find a list of versions and their names here:[URL].. Restart your computer one more time, and you should be good to go! This has been tested and confirmed to work on: -Ubuntu 9.1(karmic) with an Atheros 928x 802.11n wireless card, using the Ubuntu installed network software, in a Gateway NV53 laptop connected to a belkin 802.11n wireless router.-HP base station / 802.11g airport express
This has been tested and does not work/has issues with:
-airport extreme I hope this works for you too, and if it does, please let me know with your hardware and Ubuntu version so I can post here what other setups have been confirmed to let this work.

However, I could not get Ubuntu 10.04 to even see the Etheros AR2427 card (iwconfig). Am I doing something wrong or is there no driver to support the card? I have tried installing "linux-backports-modules-wireless-2.6.32-22-preempt" but I receive a notification that it failed to install properly upon rebooting... I have also tried installing compat-wireless but it fails to make because it can't find the linux kernel header directory...(I do have the headers, but how do I get the makefile to see a non-default header dir?) sudo modprobe ath9k runs, but running sudo ifconfig wlan0 up returns this error:

All the past versions of ubuntu had no problems. bug?

Now, if I ping the router the response times sometimes are okay but often fluctuate into the range of many hundreds or thousands of milliseconds. Sep 17, 2010So I decided to wipe out Windows and try Slitaz. It's an awesome well featured distro for it's size. One huge problem tho: I can't get wireless to work for the life of me. I actually went as far as to manually load the ath5k module but It just refuses to recognize my wireless router, much less any nearby routers. It simply doesn't see anything when it scans for wireless networks. I have no problem with that in Puppy Lucid. But I'd really like to use Slitaz, just for it's small size and quick bootup. Can anyone PLEASE help me with that?
PS: It happened here before that I had to plea and beg for any response, so PLEASE(!!) don't let me hang like that this time.

Apr 24, 2009After several hours of frustration to point of almost scrapping linux alltogether I was finally able to get my wireless networking to work in Linux Mint 6. I searched for hours and came up with several different suggestions that were supposed to fix my problem - NONE OF THEM WORKED! As a new linux user, I can completely understand why so many people try linux and then give up on it. It should not be so hard to get a wireless internet connection working.
Said another way - the people making distros should read these forums and see what difficulties are experienced and work on fixing them. In any event - I want to post my solution to the problem for my COMPAQ CQ60-211DX so that anyone else who wants to try linux on this model laptop will save a great amount of time. Here are the steps I took to get linux mint 6 to work on my laptop:
1. Open terminal window
2. Type - lspci | grep Atheros
3. Hit the enter key
If you see: Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01)
then these instructions WILL get your AR242x (AR5007) wireless card to work for you. Be warned - I tried everything I read including ndiswrapper, etc. - none of it worked! You will need to click the menu button go to all applications and then administration. From there, select hardware drivers and look for anything that has Atheros in it. CLICK DEACTIVATE! Now you will have to restart your computer. When it starts back up....
Debian Installation :: Atheros AR8151 Not Working?
May 26, 2011I installed Debian awhile ago, but then replaced the mobo. Now my system doesn't detect the onboard LAN card, installing the windows driver fixed that problem on windows but I can't seem to find the appropriate driver for Linux.
The card is an Atheros 8151.
The problem is that my install of linux (64bit) does not recognize any adapter on the system. I went and downloaded a driver, after a make, make install, and reboot it still wasn't fixed.
I can find on this recommends downloading from some partner.atheros.com which seems defunct.

Dec 7, 2010This may seem like a simple question but I have been searching for quite a while now. I am trying to get a TP-Link TL-WN422G v2 to work. It uses the Atheros AR9271 chipset which needs the ath9k_htc driver. To accommodate that I have installed 2.6.35-02063509-generic and confirmed that the driver is now present and the USB device is recognized. Now all I need is the firmware which I cannot find. The Linuxwireless.org site gives me a 0 byte file so how to get around that.

Aug 7, 2010So I bought a linksys wireless-g usb adapter for my desktop because I don't want an ethernet cable running halfway around my house to the router (the router can't move from that location).
it comes with a windows setup disc which i obviously can't use in linux so i just plugged it in and hoped for the best. It seems to turn on, the little light flashes, and I tried connecting to my wireless network in the network manager (using 10.04, gnome), but it just seems to be retrying to connect and every 5 minutes it asks me for the password which I've given it already.

The software that ships with this product is indeed Ralink-branded, but again there's no mention of a specific make/model. So I assume it's just a driver issue, however I've no idea where to begin in my search for one as I can't identify its model number.

Jul 26, 2011Yesterday I installed many updates on my compaq presario cq60-214dx running ubuntu 11.04.
This morning my 2 year old son was pressing buttons, generally playing with the notebook. When he was done the wireless stopped working. I cannot get it to come back on. What could he have possibly done without entering the password.
I have restarted several times. ifconfig does not show the wireless adapter. iwconfig says its not active. i turned on txpower using iwconfig but still nothing.
