View 1 RepliesSome month ago i bought a UMTS / HSDPA Stick "HUAWEI Mobile Connect E160". I worried about getting it running with Ubuntu, but it was freaking easy to get it running. Even less complicated than installing the same device with windows.
It worked some month without any problem and then suddenly, didnt work any more. If i plug the device to my laptop (lenovo x61) unter linux now, i still can click to start the mobile broadband, it trys to connect some time, but shows "disonnected" at the end (dont know the exact message in englisch, because i use german language prompts). The same device still works fine with same hardware with windows vista at all 3 usb ports. I deleted the mobile broadband settings couples of times and made a new one, without any effect to the behavior.
I have a weird problem on my laptop. Everything works okey on PC though.
I'm using kNetworkManager on my OpenSuse 11.2 on PC.
Everything works fine there with the following settings:
1. Make a new GSM Connection in kNetworkManager and enter settings there
2. Edit etc/sysconfig/network/config file and set .....DNS_Policy from "auto" to ""
3. Enter openDNS to /etc/resolv.conf (nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx)
It works like that on my PC.
I did the same on my laptop. The modem connects fine, but the DNS'es ain't resolved. So skype etc will work, but no pages will open in Firefox for example.
What else should I need to do to make this work?
It's weird it works the SAME way on my PC, but doesn't on my laptop.
I recently got a HUAWEI E1630 HSDPA USB Modem and it was working fine until recently. Recently it starts to drop the connection and in /var/log/messages I can see a pppd error "Protocol-Reject for unsupported protocol xxxx". The protocol number is random. Only way to resume is to unplug and replug the device. The happens very frequently and hence the device is not usable.
To isolate the service provider end, I use the same SIM on a PROLINK HSDPA USB Modem and it works fine. Also I use a different SIM from another service provider in this device and the issue still exists.
I am on Kubuntu 10.10 with all the updates to date. Should I report a bug?
I'm trying to make a Huawei K3715 HSDPA modem work in Ubuntu 10.04.1. I plug it in, and it loads two mass storage devices (one CDRom containing the Windows software, and one 2GB drive that appears empty), but I don't really know where to go from here.
Note that I replaced the stock network manager with Wicd, as I find it more reliable in picking up wifi connections. I'm not sure if it's suitable for connecting the HSPA modem though.
10.04. Updated frequently (nothing unsupported but official). Last time NM couldn't connect to internet. It was just animating for 20-30 sec. and stopped after. Modem is detected (as always). The only way I am able to get connection is wvdial. Which I'm using now.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have Slackware 13+current as of Jan 31, 2010. Except that kernel is 2.6.29.6_smp. I brought yesterday a new Globe Tattoo prepaid kit (a wireless broadband kit -- mobile broadband service here in the Philippines) which uses Huawei E1552 HSDPA USB stick (usb modem).
I understand that they don't natively support linux but from what I've learned, they are the most linux friendly wireless broadband provider. There are few success stories about installing them on Ubuntu, Xandros, Linux Mint and OpenSuSE.
I do searched the net and found: [url]
Which says I need to compile to create a huaweiAktBbo but when run, it says 'dev' failed. (Compile succeed though).
I tried kppp but my Huawei USB stick is detected as USB storage and not as a modem, so i need to use usb_modeswitch.
I grab it from [url] and tried to download the source but it seems that SlackBuilds has not updated yet its link (and the slackbuild package). I tried to make and make install the latest source from [url] but I think I forget that switch-data and conf, anyway I have to re-download again.
Do I need libusb? Or slackware 13 already have it? (I just learn while typing this that I forgot to download the switch-data and the conf file)
Another thing, I found this: [url]
But it says I need the qt compat lib from /extra? Is it this: [url] ?
My machine is running on a dual-boot Windows Vista/openSUSE 11.2 scenario. I have been trying to get my Huawei E1550 to work on Linux for the past few days trying numerous methods suggested in other forums from people with the same problem, but I have not produced any fruitful results.
Plugging in the USB modem results in Linux detecting it as a CD-ROM. I have installed usb_modeswitch in attempt to switch it to a modem, but Linux still fails to recognize it. Windows Device Manager and lsusb both give ProductID=1001 and VendorID=12d1 connected to USB1. I'm guessing since Windows detects the correct IDs, the Linux versions should also be correct. In any case, I ran usb_modeswitch with the Default IDs for /etc/usb_modeswitch.conf, which gave 0x1446 as the ProductID, not 0x1001. Upon running usb_modeswitch, the product ID could not be found so the program fails and quits asking if it's connected (and it is).
Just to test, I also ran wvdial which unsurprisingly did not detect the modem and could not send the init strings. All commands were done using root privileges. Also note that when after usb_modeswitch is run and upon plugging in the USB, NetworkManager pops up near the tray saying "attached" but still shows the device as a CD-ROM.
I am running OpenSUSE 11.4 on an HP 625 laptop and uses a Huawei EC1260 USB modem to connect to the internet. The configuration on NetworkManager worked prefect and the there is no problem connecting. The problem is when I disconnect the modem manually, I am unable to reconnect it via NetworkManager. I have to physically unplug the modem and insert it again, then only I can connect to the internet again

Here are some information about my settings:
I have used usb_modeswitch to make the device a modem. Am I right if I say that usb_modeswitch is a one time command, or does it swap the setting each time it is called? Anyhow lsusb states that the device is a modem. (All the time.) code...
I have a little bit of a prediciment with my Mobile Broadband dongle, even though I know I'm in a 3G area (Dongle Supports 3G connection) my internet still loads at the normal GPRS speeds max of 5kb/s. Is there anyway to change the speed of it or do I have to keep with GPRS at the moment?

A few days ago I ordered a UMTS USB-stick from Fonic and I received a Huawei model E1550. Win and Mac install files are on the stick, but nothing for Linux. I found for the USB Modeswitch "drivers" at www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitsch/ (nothing about the program source on the producers web page - strange), but the install gave me a lot of errors, and after a while, I decide to find another "approach". I think you might find this useful. This is my approach for Ubuntu 10.4 LTS. Open your terminal and type:
# sudo apt-get install udev-extras
and add a new udev rule:
# gksu gedit /etc/udev/rules.d/15-huawei-e1550.rules
In the pop-up window make the rule like this:
SUBSYSTEM=="usb",
SYSFS{idProduct}=="1446",
SYSFS{idVendor}=="12d1",
RUN+="/lib/udev/modem-modeswitch --vendor 0x12d1 --product 0x1446 --type option-zerocd"
Save and close. To setup you mobile broadband connection go to System / Preferences / Network Connections, (or type in terminal ~$ nm-connection-editor) select the Mobile Broadband Tab, Add new and follow the assistent. The only changes I made, are the country of the provider, and the provider. (In my case Germany, Fonic) If you have to type in the settings yourself for Fonic, visit [URL] If the device is plugged, it will connect after a few seconds.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI moved from Debian to Ubuntu a few months ago, with everything working fine, except my 3G modem (which worked with wvdial and umtsmon in Debian).
The packaging claims that it is a Huawei E160, but lsusb says different: E220 (12d1:1003).
I've followed various instructions from these forums and the wiki, and it seems to be being recognised as a modem (I can set up an O2 prepaid (UK) connection), but it refuses to connect.

View 2 Replies View RelatedOn google there is no information. Opensuse does not know anything about this chip. On that stick is a driver for Win 7 64 and a linux driver for debian. I shall " dial up" with an analog modem to get into the internet. All at the console over ppp and comands like pon and poff. there is no networkmanager. The web `n walk stick and its label is Fusion II. Perhaps anybody has similar problems.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI want to configure the Huawei E220 modem I recently bought in Fedora 10. I read lot of detail documents in the internet. All were interesting and explaining the wvdial.conf file. The problem I have is that, the file asks for the phone # to dial, username & a password. I don't have these information since my ISP didn't provide those. It works perfectly in Windows, in which above information are not needed, because when plugged in Windows, a software installation launches, which does the job to connect to the internet. So, is there a way to configure the modem to connect to the internet without those information. Because my ISP refuses to provide those, when I called there customer services.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to get a Vodafone USB modem to work - Huawei K3765 (which is a rebranded E169). It's supposed to be recognized by the kernel and just added through Network Manager, but - no luck. I also installed vodafone-mobile connect from here: [URL] (as well as the other packages). What happens when I start it - it doesn't see the modem. It's seen as a CD drive, and clicking "eject", "unmount" or "remove safely" on it doesn't help - it disappears, then several seconds later appears as a CD drive again.
View 14 Replies View RelatedThis is really weird, and I would like just this question answered: I've spent like 2 hours by plugging, unplugging, rebooting, and doing everything I could, but the modem wasn't working. When I did ls /dev/ttyU* it was showing up a list of 6 usb devices.
Code:
/dev/ttyUSB0 /dev/ttyUSB1 /dev/ttyUSB2
/dev/ttyUSB3 /dev/ttyUSB4 /dev/ttyUSB5
And when I sent the command wvdialconf after looking into all the devices, it didn't recognize any modem.
The thing is, that by the time I was writing here for a solution, I disconnected the modem, and when I reconnected it I did a ls /dev/ttyU* just to copypaste the info, and Voil! there were just 2 devices, and wvdialconf worked out just fine! I would like to know what I was doing wrong, so I make sure it won't happen again.
Oh, and I forgot to say: I use Ubuntu 8.04
