I haul my laptop between two different places and was wondering how I can set up two different configs, being able to load either quickly. I'm running openSUSE 11.2 and use KDE4, but I don't use Knetworkmanager to manage my network, I use ifup (although I don't know too much about that either).

There seem to be a number of people that believe the junk that NetworkManager is buggy.As I believe the opposite, I want to offer more detailed instructions on how to create the initial connection, and how to troubleshoot the process. Once readers of this group have commented on this draft, I plan to ask the moderators to make it a sticky.
This description will be specific to the KDE desktop. The steps will be similar for Gnome, but the details may be different.
Step 1: Do you have a Network Manager applet in the system tray? If not, use YaST =>
Network Devices => Network Settings. Under the "Global Options" tab, click on the "User Controlled with Network Manager" button. If it is already set, you will get a warning box when "Network Settings" starts.
Step 2: Now you should see the NM applet. Click on it and check the popup. If the "Enable Wireless" checkbox is inactive (gray), there are several possibilities: (1) Your wireless device driver is not loaded, (2) the necessary firmware is not available, or (3) an rfkill switch/button is wrong. For (1), check "hwinfo --network" and check the "Driver" line. If it is blank, then you need to run the command "/sbin/lspci -nn" if the device is connected to a PCI bus, or "lsusb" if a USB device. Post the results on the Wireless forum. For (2), look at the output of "dmesg | grep firmware", which will list the name of the file(s) to be loaded.
For Broadcom devices that use either b43 or b43legacy, the firmware is obtained by using the command "/usr/sbin/install_b43xx_firmware". You will need a wired connection to complete this step. For (3), you will also need a wired connection and install the
"rfkill" package using the command "sudo zypper in rfkill". The interrogate the current settings with "/usr/sbin/rfkill list". If any device is "Hard blocked", then wireless will be disabled.
Step 3: Once the "Enable Wireless" checkbox is active, check it and click on "Manage
Connections". Choose the Wireless tab and click on Add. Enter the name for this connection. You will probably want to check the "Connect Automatically" box. Next click on the Scan button. If you do not see your Access Point (AP) in the map, you will not be able to get a connection. Click on the AP you want, and click OK. The (E)SSID should be in the SSID box. The other boxes on this screen should be OK as is. If you have several APs with the same SSID, but you wish to restrict the connection to only one of them, then you should enter its MAC address in the BSSID box.
This usage is rare. Next click on the "Wireless Security" tab and enter any encryption secrets. The correct type should have been selected. For WEP encryption, you will need to use the hex key, not a passphrase. Once this is complete, click OK to close this screen, and the configure screen. During this process, a popup should appear offering to use a
wallet to store the connection secret. If you use a password on this wallet, you will need to enter that password each time you log in. If you set no password on the wallet, the security level is lowered, but entering a password is avoided.
Step 4: At this point, you will need to disconnect the wire. Whenever the computer can make a hard-wired connection, it will supersede any wireless option. The wireless connection should then occur automatically.

However when I try to setup mobile broadband connection the KDE Control Module crashes. Tried many times also after reboots, though KDE Control Module keeps crashing.

I went through the installer and everything looks great so far except I can't for the life of me seem to be able to get the wireless working. It has an Atheros AR5001 wireless network adaptor.I'm getting very bad latency and throughput on with this card. In comparison my Thinkpad with Intel card achieves at least 10 times the throughput from the same location. Also when I boot my wifi will come up authenticate and then a few seconds later disconnect and reconnect. I've tried updating the kernel to 2.6.35 as one of the fixes was to improve the performance of the ath5k driver. I'm using wpa2 authentication.

I have an Atheros AR5007 802.11 b/g WiFi Adapter. I use OpenSuse 11.3, KDE desktop.When I did iwconfig, it displayed the following:

I had the Wireless Broadband working. It stopped working after I closed the laptop (suspend). Also the wifi will not connect until reboot. Now the entry for the Wireless Broadband is gone, and the tab for it is greyed out as well.I would be happy to submit this as a bug and assist with the debugging process.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI got ubuntu working fine on my netbook and wanted to play around with opensuse. I have it installed and everything works fine except my wireless connection. I have updated everything since the installation through a wired connection, that didn't help. I have read the stickies, but to be honest, I'm so new to this stuff I'm kinda lost. So my wireless network has a WEP encryption and I have entered that password as a 64 HEX Key in the Wireless Manager widget. It connects to the network and says is labeled as active, however there is still the yellow exclamation shield next to the connection. Firefox and other apps don't have access to the internet.

I have no wireless WIFI-router at home, so I have to use the laptop as a router to the internet. I know I have to enter a static IP adres and my router's address, but where ? My network is:
- non-broadcast
- WPA2 Personal
- G
The netbook is fairly recent from Asus and wireless works perfectly with Fedora 11 and Windows XP.

i'm running 11.3 kde 4.4, with a Broadcom 4318. since installing 11.3 a few days ago, whenever i'm connected via wireless, one of two things always happen: when trying to play video (hulu, ....., etc.) in firefox, within a minute or so i will get the BSOD--that is, my screen will go black, and my cap/num lock lights will flash on and off. also, when regularly browsing the internet...not long after opening firefox, it will stop working like i have no connection, and then i will get a frozen screen and system within a minute or two after seeing a variation of this communication message:

strangely, i have no problems running streaming audio through smplayer. and i have no problems playing saved video files through smplayer. and i have absolutely no problems whatsoever browsing or playing online video while connected via ethernet.

Sorry for repeating the same old complaint but there doesn't seem to be a common fix: Wireless does not work on my Presario R3000 although SUSE 11.x lists the hardware in the Hardware Information list and the hardware is turned on. Network Manager doesn't display any wireless networks in SUSE while Win 7 can see 4 of them on the same machine. Ubuntu has no problem either

I am currently using NDISWrapper to load the bcmwl15 driver and when it's active it works beautifully.Problem is sometimes at boot, the card doesn't "turn on" and I don't know how else to describe it. The OS does not even detect that the hardware is present. I have disabled wireless hotkey in BIOS. The only way to make the wireless card "active" is to reboot with the wiredconnection to the router. After doing that the wireless card "wakes up" and works awesome.Is there anything I can do to make sure the driver load at boot?mes I get the error that NDISWrapper is not modprobbed when I go to network configuration and if I wish to do i now? View 9 Replies View RelatedJust installed 11.3 on a older Dell Dimension 8200 with a D-Link DWA-160 N dual band USB card. The install went ok and the card works (seems a little slow right now but that is next on the list). However, when I run YOU I get the following conflict:

when the system wants to install patch:Kernel-3038.noarch and patch:Kernel-3709.noarch. I cannot seem to find a suitable provider for the default:drivers_usb_core. Is this something to address here or do I need to go to [URL]?
I am running openSUSE 11.3 updated with all the latest patches and I cannot connect to my wireless router. I am running Linux Mint 10 on the same type of notebook HP Compaq 6910p and it worked right after the install. If I take off the security WPA & WPA2 Personal I can connect. lspci -v | less shows this for my wireless card.

I am using the same settings for both notebooks just can't figure out why openSUSE 11.3 won't connect. I get the prompt to key in my password, I've even checked the box to show password to make sure I was keying it in correctly. Everything was good but it just goes right back to the password prompt after it fails trying to connect.
when it comes to openSUSE but I am earnestly trying. I installed the openSUSE OS on my HP dv6000 laptop, but it does not seem to recognize my wireless card (which is a Broadcom 4311).

My wireless device is an integrated Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card, I am unsure about the driver I have in use. I am sure I have a driver installed because the configuration screen shows my network. I currently have the computer plugged into my network via CAT 5 but I would like to be able to use the wireless (obviously.) I am using Open SuSE version 11.2 and I have run the updater. I could not see my wireless network before running the updater and I can now so I know that the updates have helped but I am again stuck. I have read and taken to heart the advice given for receiving help and if any more is needed I will gladly give it. I have a small amount of experience with SuSE Enterprise edition so I can understand some technical stuff but I am best at following specific instructions.
I clicked "Network Settings", and I found that the ip address was wrong, which is "192.168.1.10/24", and netmask field is empty, so I modifed the configuration file located in /etc/sysconfig/network, named ifcfg-wlan0, added one line(NETMASK= '255.255.255.0'), saved it and reboot the system. After rebooting the system, I still found the ip address is wrong and netmask field is empty, so I have to use ifup command to activate my card manually every time the system starts.

I've followed the steps in the stickied post and found the WLAN hardware info, a screenshot of which is below:Uploaded with ImageShack.usNext it says to do this - you need to look at the logs, in particular the info in /var/log/boot.msg. To see this, you need YaST => Miscellaneous => System Logs and select boot.msg.In YaST there is no such option for system logs under miscellaneous, so I can't do that. My wireless connection work just fine but it gives me wrong connection status, like 10% even when I'm seating near the wireless router or disconnect status while I steal manege to use the internet at full speed.
