OpenSUSE Wireless :: Configure Wireless From YAST> Network Settings?

Jun 24, 2011

I am trying to configure a wireless connection from YAST under the Network Settings tool.It doesn't seem to do anything. My USB wifi device is detected in YAST > Hardware and I am using the module it says Hardware is using. It doesn't seem to save the module under YAST> Network Settings> Network Card Setup. Is this tool broken or useless? It seems setting up WiFi should be easier than this. YAST should work shouldn't it?

Ubuntu Networking :: Make A Wireless AP And Share Wireless Internet With It?

Mar 12, 2011

I have a Dell Studio 1558 with a Broadcom wireless adapter. It's a brilliant piece of hardware and love everything about it except some of it's overheating problems. When I first bought it with Windows 7 pre-installed, it had an application installed on it called PeerNet, which creates a wireless network for other computers (and wifi-enabled phones) to connect to it. Simultaneously, you could also share your internet connection with these users. The internet connection could be either wired or wireless.

My question is, how do I go about finding the same functionality on Ubuntu since I know my hardware is capable of it. (I believe in Windows 7, it creates a virtual adapter that it uses) I know there are ways to share a WIRED internet connections with some help with the terminal, but I haven't found a way to share a WIRELESS internet connection. The network manager allows you to create a wireless network but I'm unable to connect to another wireless network at the same time.

The reason I mentioned mobile phones is because my mobile (Android 2.2) is unable to find a wireless network created by the network manager, but another laptop is (without internet access that is). I've noticed that mobile devices and iPod's aren't able to find ad-hoc networks on Windows PCs as well.

I hope someone out there will be able to find a solution for me (and surely others as well!) Maybe the final release of 11.04 will help out later if nothing turns up now.

OpenSUSE Install :: 10.3 Network - Configure Ethernet Connection Or Wireless Card

Oct 2, 2010

I installed 10.3 (after buying it a couple of years ago and letting sit on the shelf) and can't get it to configure my ethernet connection or my wireless card. Yast doesn't include a list of available cards, and the error I get in installation-network setup is that the kernel isn't present. The machine I'm installing this on is a Lenovo, in which there isn't a discrete ethernet card (it's in the motherboard), but my wireless card (a Cisco LINKSYS 802.11G) is a discrete card. Because I'm divorcing Microsoft for a number of valid reasons, I don't have Windows available on that box.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: NetworkManager Doesn't Configure Default Route And Nameserve

Nov 15, 2009

yesterday I installed openSUSE 11.2 on my laptop. But I'm having problem getting the wifi configured properly. During the installation I got the message "No network running" (which I also saw after the installation when using the network configuration module of YaST after switching from ifup to NetworkManager). After installation NetworkManager seemed to work fine, it detected my wifi card, found the network, and I could even connect to it. Then the problems began, no Internet connection. The first thing I tried was pinging Google which yielded an "unknown host" message. So I checked /etc/resolv.conf, to look for the DNS servers, which where missing.

I added them manually and tried again. Still no luck, so I started pinging my router, which worked, tried again pinging Google using one of there IP addresses, which failed. So I ran route to find out which routes where being used, this one gave an unexpected result, because it only showed the route to the local network (I'm not sure about the loopback one, because this was also a lot of times missing when testing):

OpenSUSE Wireless :: Sierra Usb Modem - Attach To Ttyusb0 But Cannot Configure In Kppp?

Jun 28, 2010

i have been able to get on line running other linux os using the terminal first i type sudo modprobe -r usbserial & enter followed by sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x1199 product=0x120 & enter the last command is sudo dmesg|grep -i ttyusb. I have done this for years and it always has got me on line after the above i open kppp and select for modem /dev/ttyusb0 and click to verify kppp recognizes my sierra wireless usb modem and that is all i have ever had to do, plug in the usb modem type the three commands it comes back with confirmation the modem is attached to ttyusb0, ttyusb1 & ttyusb2 in kppp i click /dev/ttyusb0 and click quarry and get on line with suse11.1 it is not so the first command sudo modprobe -r usbserial comes back with a fatal error but the second and third command give me the same results saying i have attached the usbmodem to ttyusb0,1 & 2. but i cannot configure it in kppp.

i have tried researching on line but cannot find a similar thread. I believe the way i described above has worked on lindows 5.0, and it is how i do it with Mint which i can get on line with today. so i hope one of the wonderful millions of linux users will direct me as to what i am doing wrong. i am running amd 785 4 gb ram msi mainboard ms-7549 my modem is sierra wierless modem 595u (vendor=0x1199 product=0x120) connecting through Sprint pcs which requires no user name or password.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: 11.2 - Could Not Reach Internet Sites

Mar 4, 2010

I recently upgraded my HP DV7 to 11.2. I did the install with wired network connection, my WiFi is always on as well. Install went fine, ran updates via YAST. I am running KNetworkManager, it loaded, configured eth0 and wlan0, prompted me for WEP keys and showed both connections working OK. I later found that when eth0 was disconnected, wlan0 was still connected but I could not reach internet sites. My router address was set as the gateway address and the DNS server address. Following several items on the forum, I tried 'dig' and 'route' commands.

I found that
Code:
HPDV7-Linux:/etc # dig [URL]
; <<>> DiG 9.6.1-P3 <<>> [URL]
;; global options: +cmd
;; Got answer:
;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 28307
;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 2, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0 .....
;; Query time: 12 msec
;; SERVER: 192.168.10.1#53(192.168.10.1)
;; WHEN: Thu Mar 4 07:01:19 2010
;; MSG SIZE rcvd: 69
returned a valid URL for that server - DNS seemed to me working properly via my router.

I found that
Code:
route
returned:
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
192.168.10.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 2 0 0 wlan0
loopback * 255.0.0.0 U 0 0 0 lo
No default route showing.

I then opened the Network Manager connection editor, went to edit for the wireless connection and found under the IP_Address tab, Routes option box that both
Code:
Ignore automatically obtained routes
and Use only for resources on this connection were enabled, I believe by the install process.

Unchecking these yielded
Code:
HPDV7-Linux:/etc # route
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
192.168.10.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 2 0 0 wlan0
loopback * 255.0.0.0 U 0 0 0 lo
default DD-WRT.capenet 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 wlan0
and internet connectivity now working.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: 11.4 - Internet Very Slow On Firefox

May 17, 2011

When I had OpenSuSE 11.3 installed originally, I never had any slow internet connection until I erased the hard drive and went to 11.4. This is what my configuration looks like on /usr/sbin/iwconfig:

Cell 01 - Address: AA:AA:BA:BA:AB:BB
Channel:11
Frequency:2.462 GHz (Channel 11)
Quality=70/70 Signal level=-37 dBm
Encryption key: on
ESSID:"housewifiZZZZ" .....

The device I am using is a D-Link DWA-160 which is running the ar9170usb driver (and did on the previous version)

These are the steps I did:
Disable IPv6 from the global tab on Network Settings.
Set DHCP version 4 only in dynamic address in address tab.
Used the anti-IPv6 switches in firefox making these changes
Network.dns.disableIPv6 change from false to true
Network.http.pipelining change from false to true
Network.http.pipelining.maxrequests change from 4 to 8
Added ipv6.disable=1 in DEFAULT_APPEND in Bootloader
(I couldn't find bootloader _APPENDS that was stated in another forum)

Switched from ifup to NetworkManager for Network Setup Method. Reinstalled OpenSuSE 11.4 with Ubuntu 11.04 (to see if it was OS issue) and it still didn't work, so I switched back to OpenSuSE 11.4. Is there anything I did wrong or do I need to do anything additional?

What struck me is that apparently both drivers rt2500usb AND rt73usb are loaded. Is that necessary ? What struck me as well is that I can't get my encryption key when issueing the command iwconfig as root: it seems to be off ?

Then when I studied the hardware-info (via YAST), I got also this :

OpenSUSE Wireless :: How To Get The WLAN To Connect To The Internet

Jun 3, 2011

Linux is what i'd like to learn, so Howdy to all and i hope to speak to you all regularly
in short, I started with Ubuntu Linux about 6 months ago, Didn't like it, i researched various distro's and came across, PC Linux OS, it was really cool, But i couldn't get it to connect Wirelessly, so i tried something else... the bottom line is i finally settled on SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11, i seem to like it a lot.Ok.. now that introductions are out of the way

Background info: I've installed SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 on my Sony Vaio Laptop (VGN-NW15G) with no major issues, after a bit of mucking around, i got the LAN to Connect to the internet, after some more mucking around, i figured out how to get the WLAN to connect to the internet.MY Goal: To be able to Wirelessly Network my Laptop with My PC.so that i can access the files on the PC, From my laptop, and Vice Versa, but the important thing is to first be able to access the PC files from the Laptop.

NOTE: My PC has 4 Hard Drives (1 for the O/s, 3 Backups) they are all configured and Shared correctly for Networking and Wireless networking, and all the permissions are set correctly.Hardware and Software Environments:My Laptop : Sony Vaio VGN-NW15GOperating System : SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 11Wireless Capable, and has no issues Wireless Networking when running of a Hard Drive Loaded with Win 7 Ultimate 32bit, Therefore all Hardware is Compatible

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.1 On Eee PC 1005HA - Configure Function Keys Support For Volume Controls And Wireless?

Oct 26, 2009

I put together a step-by-step guide of how I installed openSUSE 11.1 on my ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005HA Netbook. I planned on going back and re-installing using my own guide to check for mistakes, etc. but I never seem to get around to it, so I'll just post what I have and let you guys comment if you run into issues. Side notes: This guide assumes you want to wipe out Windows XP and run only openSUSE. Sorry, I'm a Gates hater.

I still haven't figured out how to configure the function keys support for volume controls and wireless. I'm hoping the "eeepc kernel module" mentioned by malcolmlewis here: Suse on my Asus 1005HA - openSUSE Forums will do the trick.

OpenSUSE Network :: Working Wireless Connection But No Internet / What To Do?

Jan 15, 2010

I've installed opensuse 11.2 on an old IBM thinkpad. The install went without a hitch and when I got to the desktop I inserted my Dlink DWL-G132 wireless USB adapter. Opensuse immediately recognised that a wireless device was attached and I could see my wireless network listed. I entered my WPA password and was able to connect to my routers configuration page by entering 192.168.0.1 in the URL bar of firefox. For some reason I am unable to navigate to any webpage. When I enter a URL firefox acts as though there is no internet connection. The only way I can get the internet on my laptop is to connect it to my router with a cable. I used a wired connection and ran the update utility thinking that perhaps an update would fix the issue but it did not. I know the adapter works because the laptop used to have windows xp installed and I could connect fine with that.

Does anyone here have any idea why I would be able to connect wirelessly to the routers configuration page but not to the internet? I appreciate any advice anyone may have.
