Ubuntu Networking :: Make A Wireless AP And Share Wireless Internet With It?

I have a Dell Studio 1558 with a Broadcom wireless adapter. It's a brilliant piece of hardware and love everything about it except some of it's overheating problems. When I first bought it with Windows 7 pre-installed, it had an application installed on it called PeerNet, which creates a wireless network for other computers (and wifi-enabled phones) to connect to it. Simultaneously, you could also share your internet connection with these users. The internet connection could be either wired or wireless.
My question is, how do I go about finding the same functionality on Ubuntu since I know my hardware is capable of it. (I believe in Windows 7, it creates a virtual adapter that it uses) I know there are ways to share a WIRED internet connections with some help with the terminal, but I haven't found a way to share a WIRELESS internet connection. The network manager allows you to create a wireless network but I'm unable to connect to another wireless network at the same time.
The reason I mentioned mobile phones is because my mobile (Android 2.2) is unable to find a wireless network created by the network manager, but another laptop is (without internet access that is). I've noticed that mobile devices and iPod's aren't able to find ad-hoc networks on Windows PCs as well.
I hope someone out there will be able to find a solution for me (and surely others as well!) Maybe the final release of 11.04 will help out later if nothing turns up now.
I have wired internet connection and want to share it over a secured wireless network ... when i tried to create a secured ad-hoc network .. system doesn't connect and creates a new network with the same name but unsecured one ... i have read somewhere this method ..

I started using Arch just a few days ago. forward traffic to the Wireless access point I created on arch. i am using cable internet (ppp0) which I want to share via a usb wifi adapter running as a WAP. I followed the instructions in this link to enable the AP mode. Afterwards I followed the instructions provided in the Arch Wiki to forward the traffic but because of my inexperience I am still unable to connect to the internet. My PC is connected directly to the cable modem. I would like to use my PC's WiFi card to share my internet connection with my Android phone and laptop so I can avoid buying a wireless router.
I've decided I want to cross over to Ubuntu from Win vista but there's one thing i cant get working. My wireless card. My wireless card is a Xterasys xn 2523g I can't make this switch until i have the internet working.

i installed ubuntu along side of xp, and i cannot get my wireless to work. the drivers that are installed in xp work great, and i can access the internet, but do not work in ubuntu.
I have two linux laptops. Currently, I'm using both of them at work, side-by-side. Now the problem is, I'm connected to a wireless router, but the wireless only works on one of the laptops. So I'm stuck with one laptop that has no access to the internet. Both machines do, however, have working ethernet nic cards. So, I was wondering if I could use the laptop with the wireless connection to share the internet connection with my other linux machine and access the internet on both of them. Or as an alternative, just use the internet on the machine without wireless and be able to switch back and forth, that would increase my productivity like 30 fold.
if i set up an older computer as a local DNS server for my home network, can i plug my wireless router into one of the ethernet ports to share the internet connection to my wireless devices?
There is a new feature in Windows 7 that make u able to create a virtual WiFi and share ur internet access with many others.
I know there is ad-hoc but sometimes it has problems, for example I couldn't connect to my friend's ad-hoc network (he is using Windows 7) but I _could_ connect to the virtual WiFi he created, it appeared just like any other wireless network unlike ad-hoc
so is there any way to create a virtual WiFi and not ad-hoc in Linux?
I use the icon in the top right to try to connect but there does not seem to be a utility that searches for connections, or if there is it is not doing anything. Instead it seems that I need to set up the connection manually. I put in the SSID from the router, though I was never asked for this info in windows, but it wants my MAC address, which I can't find on the router. It also doesn't automatically ask for my wireless key which seems very strange; it only asks for it if I select WPA2 from a drop down menu.
The ubuntu official guide on this told be to go into hardware drivers and enable proprietary drivers. There's no such thing but there is "additional drivers" and when I go into this it says there aren't any.
As an aside I've had a funny experienc with Ubuntu. I installed it on my laptop and thought it was great. Everything worked fine, connecting to the internet seemed to happen almost instantly just by putting in the wireless key, and I was thoroughly impressed. However, since I've installed 10.10 on my desktop through Wubi I've had nothing but problems. I can't even play media from my external hard drive.
I use openSUSE 11.3 with KDE 4.4 and I have a Belkin Share Wireless USB Adapter (F7D2101 v1) , I attached the adapter and rebooted the system, it does not work. Can someone help me configure?

A friend who switched ISP's gave me his old Linksys WRT54-G wireless router. I went through the installation procedure and had a wireless connection up and running - smiley face. I had security set up for WPA, and decided to upgrade it to WPA2. Another smiley face. When I went to connect (had already done so successfully), I noticed it referred to my wireless as Linksys - I was expecting to see the SSID. So I started playing around in Network Manager and now I have things all effed up.
Don't know exactly what I did, but now I have no wireless. So I ran a few commands (lshw -C network, iwconfig, ifconfig, and iwlist scan), and looking at the results I see what appear to be inconsistencies in the output. I've posted them below, and make the following observations:
1. Under the lshw it refers to my wireless connection logical name as wmaster0, and has the correct MAC address, etc.
2. Under the iwconfig it says, 'wmaster0 no wireless extensions', but then refers to wlan0 as the wireless connection (although it does not seem to be running).
3. Under ifconfig I see both a wlan0 and a wlan0:avahi. The wlan0 has no IP, the wlan0:avahi does, but it is incorrect.
I use a wireless 3G card via wvdial and was wondering how could i possibly share it via my laptops wireless with WPA2. I want to be able to connect a second laptop I have and my iPhone via wifi.
I am trying to connect my desktop to my laptop over a non-internet connected LAN, but when i enable the LAN connection on my desktop (the one with the wireless) its internet stops working.
it is a very similar problem to this except that i am using ubuntu for the machine with the two connections.
right now i have my wireless on the 192.168.1.* address space, while the LAN is to be on 192.168.5.*
note: my goal is not to share internet with my laptop, just be able to connect to it and the internet at the same time.

I tried to install Xubuntu 10.10 Maverick as dual boot on my laptop. However when xubuntu is on, I can't find a way to connect to internet. When I try the 2 arrows on the up-right corner the option for wireless is deemed. I tried offline/online, that did not work either. when I click the firefox It says you are not connected.
I've tried everything listed in these forums but every time I run sudo iwconfig wlan0 mode master Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) : SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument.
I tried the STA drivers and get the same thing except the kernel module loaded is wl instead of b43. Is it even possible to set this card to master mode? I can't find jack on the net. uname -r 2.6.31-19-generic

I'm trying to set up a wireless or wired network (wireless would be better...) to share my connection with my housemate, as well as with some devices. The only guide I found regarding this (I must admit, I didn't have much time to put into research), was dating back to 2005, and although doable, seemed somewhat confusing. I have two computers with ubuntu 10.04 installed. They both connect to the same wireless router. One computer has an external hard drive that has music, pictures and some documents. another thing, the hard drive has been formatted to ext4. I would like to be able to access that external hard drive from my other computer. I read some post on how to connect to the server through ssh but i think it's the intruction are too old. I tried nfs for server/client, but couldn't set it up, it was a little complicated.

My wireless connection work just fine but it gives me wrong connection status, like 10% even when I'm seating near the wireless router or disconnect status while I steal manege to use the internet at full speed.
i am using fedora 11 and i want to share my western digital external hard drive over my wireless network like i previousely did with my windows os. it is connected via usb to my computer. how do i do this ?
