OpenSUSE Wireless :: Sierra Usb Modem - Attach To Ttyusb0 But Cannot Configure In Kppp?
Jun 28, 2010
i have been able to get on line running other linux os using the terminal first i type sudo modprobe -r usbserial & enter followed by sudo modprobe usbserial vendor=0x1199 product=0x120 & enter the last command is sudo dmesg|grep -i ttyusb. I have done this for years and it always has got me on line after the above i open kppp and select for modem /dev/ttyusb0 and click to verify kppp recognizes my sierra wireless usb modem and that is all i have ever had to do, plug in the usb modem type the three commands it comes back with confirmation the modem is attached to ttyusb0, ttyusb1 & ttyusb2 in kppp i click /dev/ttyusb0 and click quarry and get on line with suse11.1 it is not so the first command sudo modprobe -r usbserial comes back with a fatal error but the second and third command give me the same results saying i have attached the usbmodem to ttyusb0,1 & 2. but i cannot configure it in kppp.
i have tried researching on line but cannot find a similar thread. I believe the way i described above has worked on lindows 5.0, and it is how i do it with Mint which i can get on line with today. so i hope one of the wonderful millions of linux users will direct me as to what i am doing wrong. i am running amd 785 4 gb ram msi mainboard ms-7549 my modem is sierra wierless modem 595u (vendor=0x1199 product=0x120) connecting through Sprint pcs which requires no user name or password.

how to install the modem Sierra Wireless AC775 on Fedora Core 6. Fedora 6 detects the modem, but does not establish it as a device. And no entries in the directory /dev about modem. Startup Fedora 6 said that the initialization eth1 failed because no device serial_cs.

I migrated from 11.0 to a new install of 11.3. Under 11.0 I was using Kinternet for a dialup connection through an external USB modem.Kinternet isn't available under 11.3, so I installed KPPP but haven't been able to get it to work. The modem and provider has been configured through YaST.At first with KPPP there was an error with permissions as a user. One old thread discussed how to fix this through chmod, which was successful for me.Now there is the error message 'Unable to create modem lock file'.Under configuration, use lock file is checked.

I have a 3G modem (Sierra Compass 885). When I attached it on my openSuse 11.2, the Network Manager has deteced it. After that, using Network Manager, I configure the connection by filling the Dial number, Username, Password, and IPN. When I click OK the connection status always says "Waiting for authorization" and never connected.

A problem with kppp. It will not detect modem after a fresh install. It did last week before Ubuntu 11.04 turned up its toes, but when it worked it was weird. It found the usb modem on /dev/ACM0 as user but /dev/usb/ACM0 if logged in as root. Now it will not open modem at all. Gnome ppp has no problem and wvdial correctly identifies it.

I have a desktop computer running Debian Lenny, a 56 K modem, and a dial-up account, currently configured like this: computer -> modem -> UPS -> phone jack
When I run off a Knoppix live CD, I can use kppp to configure pppd (using PAP/CHAP authentication and hardware control flow) to dialup and surf. When I try to user kppp to configure pppd exactly the same way on my hard drive installation, I get nothing. Both my Knoppix live CD and Debian Lenny use exactly the same version of kppp, but the pppd related files in /etc/ppp look a bit different.
Under both Knoppix and Debian Lenny hard drive installation, when I try to connect, the login debug window of kppp shows:
Code:
ATZ
OK
ATM1L1
OK
ATDT [phone number]
At this point I hear the modem dialing out, and when using Knoppix, after a few seconds I see
Code:
Which I think corresponds to my route to the InterNet being established through my ISP. When using the hard drive install, I never see the CONNECT, and all indications are that my modem is not sending authentication information at all, but getting stuck right after dialing out, so that my ISP gets a phone call from a modem which... refuses to speak. I never had any problems before, so I am baffled.
So apparently my system is currently misconfigured in some way which prevents point to point protocol from getting out.
Questions:
I have a firewall on my computer which I set up using guarddog. I have enabled point to point protocol from internet zone to local zone. I know that ppp is a symmetrical protocol, but my understanding is that I do not need to enable point to point from local to internet zone. I have not enabled irc protocol because my understanding is that this is only relevant to software flow control using chat scripts. Does this sound correct? Is there some additional protocol I need to allow in order to use pppd to dial out?
When I reboot my computer (off the hard drive) I sometimes see that the system complaining about a failure to stop every process, and sometimes I see mention of an eth0.pid. I have been looking for lock files; would they all be in /var/run?
When I use kppp to configure pppd, I want to do that as my ordinary user for at least two reasons, correct? don't want to run pppd as root user for security reasons kppp is a GUI and root user can't use X (on Debian)
So I should see in home directory of my ordinary user
.kde/share/config/kppprc
.kde/share/apps/kppp
But not in /root directory, correct? What pppd related processes should I see with ps -ef if everything is working?

I have bought a new USB modem from my service provider. The model they provided is "Huawei EC1260" Huawei Terminal. As usual the official support is for windows and mac.
I tried to install this device using two methods..
1) Set knetworkmanager settings to "traditional with ifup". Then in wireless setup there is a choice of having "usb" (A tick box). I selected that, and setup completed successfully but the knetworkmanager was not up(I did ifdown wlan0 (wlan0 was the wireless config name), ifup wlan0 and the rcnetwork restart.)
2) Again knetworkmanager was set to "traditional method with ifup. This times while adding the connection I specifically selected the type "USB", then clicked to finish the configuration. The configuration finished without any errors but when I checked the Network Configuration screen no USB device was added there.
Are there any specific steps to configure a USB modem

I have a Zoom 2920 internal hardware modem that worked well with Suse 10.0. In Suse 11.3 the modem config. overview lists 2 modems for this one board; #1- AT Modem and #2- Venus Modem (v90, 56K Flex). With #1 "edit" brings up modem parameters and the modem device line is blank. With #2 the device line shows /dev/ttys4.
When the provider parameters are entered, for either #1 or #2, the modem overview continues to list them as not configured but a third line "modem 0" is configured with the provider information at /dev/ttys4. The modem will not function.

I bought a Toshiba NB305-410BN-G and it has an internal Sierra Wireless GOBI`2000 HS - USB Mobile Broadband Device 9001. This works fine providing wireless internet over Verizon's cellular service using Windoze 7 Starter os. I installed Ubuntu 9.1 (canonical) on the NB305 and I found a network device GUI that allowed me to configure "Mobile Broadband" for Verizon and allowed me to check a little box to automatically start the service. This action does not provide me with Verizon on Ubuntu. When I looked at the devices, I cannot see the gobi 2000.How do I get the gobi to work on 9.1?

I have just moved over from MS to Linux and so far I am pretty happy (couple of frustrations along the way, but nothing I could not sort out so far).
Except this little bit that has me bogged down. I am trying to get my HS2300 HSDPA wireless modem to work, but I am a little stuck here.
I found a post that I should get the HP-WMI module to load. That was a post on an older kernel and this guy mentioned that is should be included in newer versions of the kernel.
Modprobe did not deliver any results, however an "lsmod |grep wmi" delivered the following:
Obviously I need to look for hp_wmi, but so far I cannot get anything to work.

I am trying to configure a wireless connection from YAST under the Network Settings tool.It doesn't seem to do anything. My USB wifi device is detected in YAST > Hardware and I am using the module it says Hardware is using. It doesn't seem to save the module under YAST> Network Settings> Network Card Setup. Is this tool broken or useless? It seems setting up WiFi should be easier than this. YAST should work shouldn't it?

I am trying to connect to wireless broadband using SuSE 11.2 and a Huawei E160E USB modem, through Internode Australia.
Networkmanager does not seem to recognise the modem so I am trying other means. I believe I have got wvdial to connect (it reports a correct IP address, the light on the stick goes solid blue and I can ping external IP addresses). However it can't find a DNS nameserver and I can't work out how to provide one to wvdial, and therefore can't do anything through the connection (I would rather not revert to ifup because this laptop travels between WLANs). I followed swerdna's comprehensive instructions on setting up a wireless broadband modem in YAST, but I got lost on the very last instruction: KMenu --> KInternet. I can't find this on my application launcher.

If I connect with a 3g modem or with wireless sometimes the resolving does not work. This happens on opensuse 11.2. nslookup and dig works but nor ping nor ssh nor any other network application does work If I modify the /etc/resolv.conf after connecting to a wireless network for example it does not work even the dns are known And more strange if the resolver works and I modify /etc/resolv.conf with known dns the resolver does not work anymore. BTW: the dns entry from the wireless is 192.168.1.1 and I do not have any idea how the wireless ap is configured... so it could be in this case that dns is not forwared only allowed to use 192.168.1.1 but the other case is a 3g modem which not even the propagated dns entries works in the bad case

I'm using a 'ice.net' D-50 (CDMA EV-DO rev A) mobile broadband USB modem, also sold as Cmotech CNU-680 in other areas. The modem is connected to a USB port on a hp8710w mobile workstation.
As the 11.2 Gnome Network Manager won't connect this modem to Internet (see my first post here), I have downloaded and installed a 'D50 Modem Manager program' from [url]
After unpacking and installing this cmotech-qtmodem-1.6-1.i586.rpm package for suse on 11.2 x86_64, the gui application 'D-50 Modem Manager' is found in the Internet Group.
However, neither this program does connect the D-50 modem really on 11.2 x86_64 (as it did on 11.1 x86_64). Tried both traditional network setup and with Network Manager.
Any idea and suggestion how to trobleshoot this further? I think I've seen that a newer version cmotech-qtmodem 1.9 has been mentioned on the web, but without being able to find and download this version.
Command output as follows:
As normal user:
On the Modem Manager gui: D-50 modem is ready
From Login script Debug window:
As root:
It seemed like the modem connected, but Firefox was not able to connect afterwards (Server not found)

I had an ATT "2Wire" modem/router that was working but connection to the Internet was often poor. An ATT technician came to my home and swapped out the modem/router for the identical model. I changed the ESSID and WEP code to match the new unit and everything was fine with the following wireless units: a wireless desktop, two cellphones, three wireless Archos tablets, and a couple of e-reader tablets. So all seemed to be fine wirelessly. However...
My laptop (SuSE 11.0, KDE3) simply won't connect no matter what I do. I changed the ESSID and WEP info in the lappy exactly as was done with the other wireless devices named above. But no good. The lappy does see the modem/router (a good, strong signal appears in KNetworkManager). But it seems as if the modem/router is rejecting the lappy's attempted handshake using the new ESSID and/or WEP information.
I thought that perhaps there was something wrong with the lappy's wireless card, so I took it to a Starbucks to see if it would connect there on an open network, and it did without problem. So the lappy's wireless card appears to be working fine. It just won't talk to the encrypted modem/router at home. Here are the settings on the lappy. Hopefully something here is easily identified as the culprit. With all the clicking I've done it certainly is possible that I ticked something that should not have been ticked and just don't realize what I've done.
Network settings screen:
Global options tab:
Network setup method: user controlled with Network Manager
Change default route via DHCP (ticked)
[code]....
Why won't the new modem/router which is exactly the same as the old one except for the ESSID and WEP work with my lappy yet it does work with a bunch of other wireless devices?

If I attach an NTFS drive to opensuse 11.3, will the OS see the drive and the files?
My goal:
I wanted to install OpenSuSE and add VMware Server 2.02 on top of it. I have a few hard drives that are NTFS. I need for my Windows virtual machines to see those hard drives. So in order for that to happen, the host OS would have to see the hard drives as well.
