Oct 11, 2010On a fresh install of the Meerkat release candidate, I've installed the latest VirtualBox (3.2.8-64453, not open source version). When I run it, I get a user-agreement notice box as expected.
But, (1) sometimes immediately thereafter, or if not, then (2) as soon as I move the mouse pointer or (3) after I use the PageDown key to get to the bottom of the agreement text and use a key combination for "I agree," my Ubuntu user session crashes and I have to log in again.
The only other weird symptom I'm having is that I cannot set visual effects to anything but "None" (if I attempt to, I get an alert "The Composite extension is not available").
Perhaps there's a video-related problem underlying both issues, i.e., the X server is failing in both cases?

Jun 20, 2011I have a Fujitsu Amilo Pi 3525 notebook with 4 GB RAM and I am trying out Fedora 15 64-bit. When I boot from the CD, it reboots at the point where plymouth should exit and X should start. There are no obvious error messages from the console; it just reboots. Here is the hardware spec. for this laptop: [URL]
This notebook has been generally reliable and runs 64-bit Ubuntu without any problems. I am planning to test the CD in another host (although the media check did not fail) and at least try the 32-bit version (even though I know it can't address of the RAM). As experiences with Linux go, it feels a little early to hit a brick wall so early in the process.
Fedora :: Gnome3 Crashes Immediately - Some Repos Disappeared / Don't Work
Jun 27, 2011Two days ago I finally upgraded from Fedora14 (x64) to Fedora15 (x64). [A bit of backstory: I first tried the preupgrade method, I always try it but for some reason it always fails (gives me errors about dependencies that it cannot solve), so as usual I downloaded the full DVD and upgraded using it. It usually works but, as usual, the first time I boot I have to boot in runlevel 3 because after the update my Nvidia drivers aren't up to date with the kernel, so using runlevel 3 I was able to yum update both Kernel and Kmod-nvidia packages; after that I could finally reboot and enjoy the new Gnome3 interface]
When I was finally able to boot in graphical mode (see above), everything worked fine: I had my Gnome3 desktop in front of me, programs worked, all my settings from Fedora14 were still there, all installed programs were still working etc etc. Of course, PackageKit listed a bunch of updates that I needed to do (more than 700 actually), so obviously I gave it the thumbs up to update; unfortunately, some dependencies could not be resolved, to be precise they are dependencies for the packages Mono, RPM and VLC (more details later).......
Ubuntu :: Firefox Crashes Immediately Before Loading Any Website / Resolve This?
Mar 18, 2010I'm Dual-booting XP with Ubuntu Karmic Koala, heres my other specs:
CPU: Intel Pentium D 3.0Ghz family(15) model(4) stepping(4)
GFX: Geforce 7800 GT (had problems with GFX when I first installed Ubuntu, I had to update my drivers)
2 GB RAM
This is a nearly fresh install of Karmic Koala, I've only installed whatever updates I needed, graphics card drivers, KPlayer, and Google Chrome. Because I prefer Chrome over Firefox I immediately went to download Chrome, and Firefox would get to the Chrome page and then crash. I then got the Chrome install file from another computer and installed it. Chrome will not even launch, so I go to search the problem in Firefox and it crashes on ANY link I click in Google Search. I also tried to directly type websites into the URL box: it loads the pages title (Ex. "Yahoo! Mail"), and crashes before displaying the page at all.
This is a very odd problem to me as I used the same disc to install dual-boot with Win7 and Ubuntu on my laptop which works perfectly, and now this happens to my desktop.
Fedora Installation :: Install Software Crashes Immediately After Select US English On First Screen
Mar 15, 2010When I attempt to install the OS on my PC, the install software crashes immediately after I select US-English on the first screen. I'm copying the entire error report below. My system is configured as follows: Gigabyte P35-DS3R motherboard with 4G RAM. (FYI, I'm using the 32-bit LiveCD just because I may need a 32-bit OS for some purposes. I know this means I may not be able to use all of my RAM.) There are 3 500G hard drives connected to the computer. /dev/sda and /dev/sdb are RAID-1 mirrors via the on-motherboard ICH9R RAID chip. The logical partitions show up as /dev/dm-1, /dev/dm-2, /dev/dm-3, /dev/dm-4, and /dev/dm-5. When I type `fdisk -l`, I can see sda, sdb, and dm-* all separately. (I can provide the full output of `fdisk` if anybody wants to see it.)
/dev/sdc is a standalone drive without RAID.
I want to install Fedora on /dev/dm-2 with swap on /dev/dm-5. Currently, /dev/dm-1 and /dev/sdc2 each contain a separate installation of WinXP. I suspect the problem is with detecting RAID, thus I have deleted most of the error report that doesn't seem to concern storage detection.

Jan 18, 2010I have used a few versions of ubuntu now and each one seems to encounter the same problem loading ubuntu.
I am using a Samsung x05 laptop.
If I have a mouse, printer or even wired internet connection plugged in at any point during startup I will not be able to get past the login screen. I can login fine but the system freezes at the beige screen before the desktop appears.
I recently partitioned and installed Windows xp, which doesn't have the same problem, so I presume it is some kind of incompatibility between Ubuntu and my laptop?

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Startup Crashes Using LiveCD On Computer
Apr 13, 2010Whenever I try to start up using a liveCD on my computer, it crashes on me and dumps the call trace to me. This happens both on Ubuntu and Kubuntu 10.04 with similar results. I am using a Gateway(tm) GT5408 machine with a default Intel(R) BIOS built-in. At first, the booting screen shows up and seems to load, but then I find that it took too long. Whenever I pressed an arrow key, it showed a bunch of text. Most of it was talking about memory, and from what I've read, it seems like I have a bad BIOS, but I'll let other people decide on that issue. The call trace is as listed below:

Jul 16, 2010I am having some trouble with RhythmBoxt runs fine until I install the package (Synaptics) Rhythmbox plugins 0.12.8-0. After I install this package and then open RhythmBox, the applications opens for a few seconds and then closes (terminates). I get a segmentation fault.I tried reinstalling but this does not help. From previous posts, others were also obtaining segmentation faults, others had success with uninstalling the rhythmbox-ubuntuone-music-store package. I do not have this installed on my system. My problem is related with the plugins package.If I run rhythmbox from the command line in sudo mode it starts without crashing but with a warning:Rhythmbox-WARNING **: Unable to grab media player keys: Could not get owner of name 'org.gnome.SettingsDaemon': no such name But when I select one of the plugin sources it then terminates and closes down

Mar 17, 2010I am trying to run VNC server on a standard OpenSUSE 11.2 Gnome Desktop installation.I have done this succesfully with SLES for sometime, however, my experience with OpenSUSE 11.2 is that it doesn't work out of the box!!
I am using XP Pro VNC viewer Free Edition 4.1.2 to connect.
I have removed "localhost" from the # special IPv6 addresses in hosts. This fixes the black screen issue for me. All appears well until I disconnect and retry the connection after 5 minutes or so. Then VNC client makes the connection and then immediately disconnects. It's a no go from then on. If I reboot OpenSUSE 11.2 it works again but then reconnect fails again after the same period of time.
I am trying NX now as an alternative. However, I would much prefer to use VNC.
OpenSUSE :: K3b Decided To Give DVD Capacity Immediately?
Nov 13, 2010First of all, this isn't really a problem for me, but I'm just curious. In the past when I started a data CD project, I remember that k3b used to start me with a "blank CD" of 700MB and then expand to a "blank DVD" of 4.4GB when the amount of data exceeded the capacity of a CD. Normally I just make an ISO image for the CD and burn on another machine (for a reason not relevant here).
Today, it started me off with a "blank DVD" right away. It's not a problem because the ISO format isn't different and the data is under 700MB anyway. How come? Ah wait, I think I know what it is, there's a DVD+RW in the drive at the moment so k3b got too smart and assumed that I wanted to write to it, even though I selected Create image only.

May 1, 2010Yesterday, I upgraded my Ubuntu system from 8.04 to 10.04. The installation process went smoothly, and the first boot of 10.04 was very smooth. However, after I selected 10.04 from my boot screen, the start-up process went very slow and then froze at a black screen. I shut it down and restarted it, only to have it load normally.
This happens on and off and I don't know why it's doing this.Does anyone have any idea what this could be or has had the same problems?

Ubuntu :: Splash Startup Screen Flickers And Crashes?
Dec 27, 2010I'm running a dual boot Win7 and Ubuntu 10.04. I have them both partitioned on a 1TB drive and I also have 2 250gb internal hd's hooked up. So starting maybe yesterday, I was noticing that Win7 started crashing for absolutely no reason whatsoever where it freezes and the mouse and keyboard are unresponsive. Today I did a system restore because I was tinkering in the registry so I thought that could have been the issue. Crashed once since. But runs longer. I also checked the event log and doesn't divulge anything explaining the system crash.
And just now, I tried booting up Ubuntu and after grub, the purple splash screen flickers back and forth to the text based terminal startup. All I could make out once was "could not read partition table." that was really the only significant thing I could make out. It flickers too quickly for me to really catch what its saying.

This only happens in the new Unity UI. Switching back to Ubuntu Classic, Firefox runs just fine. Here is the message I get when starting Firefox from the terminal:

OpenSUSE :: Action Button Bugged - Immediately Logged Off
May 10, 2011I have just installed openSuse 11.4 on my Acer Aspire 5738Z. When I click on the action button included in the bottom panel, I expect to open a windows asking me if I want to shut down, restart, or log off. But unfortunately, when I click on it, I am not offered any option and I get immediately logged off. I removed the button from the panel and installed it again, but it still dysfunctions.
