So I followed this thread Amarok Not Launching I have uninstalled Amarok through Install/ Remove software. On a fresh install of the Meerkat release candidate, I've installed the latest VirtualBox (3.2.8-64453, not open source version). When I run it, I get a user-agreement notice box as expected.
But, (1) sometimes immediately thereafter, or if not, then (2) as soon as I move the mouse pointer or (3) after I use the PageDown key to get to the bottom of the agreement text and use a key combination for "I agree," my Ubuntu user session crashes and I have to log in again.
The only other weird symptom I'm having is that I cannot set visual effects to anything but "None" (if I attempt to, I get an alert "The Composite extension is not available").
Perhaps there's a video-related problem underlying both issues, i.e., the X server is failing in both cases?
I have a Fujitsu Amilo Pi 3525 notebook with 4 GB RAM and I am trying out Fedora 15 64-bit. When I boot from the CD, it reboots at the point where plymouth should exit and X should start. There are no obvious error messages from the console; it just reboots. Here is the hardware spec. for this laptop: [URL]
This notebook has been generally reliable and runs 64-bit Ubuntu without any problems. I am planning to test the CD in another host (although the media check did not fail) and at least try the 32-bit version (even though I know it can't address of the RAM). As experiences with Linux go, it feels a little early to hit a brick wall so early in the process.
Two days ago I finally upgraded from Fedora14 (x64) to Fedora15 (x64). [A bit of backstory: I first tried the preupgrade method, I always try it but for some reason it always fails (gives me errors about dependencies that it cannot solve), so as usual I downloaded the full DVD and upgraded using it. It usually works but, as usual, the first time I boot I have to boot in runlevel 3 because after the update my Nvidia drivers aren't up to date with the kernel, so using runlevel 3 I was able to yum update both Kernel and Kmod-nvidia packages; after that I could finally reboot and enjoy the new Gnome3 interface]
When I was finally able to boot in graphical mode (see above), everything worked fine: I had my Gnome3 desktop in front of me, programs worked, all my settings from Fedora14 were still there, all installed programs were still working etc etc. Of course, PackageKit listed a bunch of updates that I needed to do (more than 700 actually), so obviously I gave it the thumbs up to update; unfortunately, some dependencies could not be resolved, to be precise they are dependencies for the packages Mono, RPM and VLC (more details later).......
I'm Dual-booting XP with Ubuntu Karmic Koala, heres my other specs:
CPU: Intel Pentium D 3.0Ghz family(15) model(4) stepping(4)
GFX: Geforce 7800 GT (had problems with GFX when I first installed Ubuntu, I had to update my drivers)
2 GB RAM
This is a nearly fresh install of Karmic Koala, I've only installed whatever updates I needed, graphics card drivers, KPlayer, and Google Chrome. Because I prefer Chrome over Firefox I immediately went to download Chrome, and Firefox would get to the Chrome page and then crash. I then got the Chrome install file from another computer and installed it. Chrome will not even launch, so I go to search the problem in Firefox and it crashes on ANY link I click in Google Search. I also tried to directly type websites into the URL box: it loads the pages title (Ex. "Yahoo! Mail"), and crashes before displaying the page at all.
This is a very odd problem to me as I used the same disc to install dual-boot with Win7 and Ubuntu on my laptop which works perfectly, and now this happens to my desktop.
When I attempt to install the OS on my PC, the install software crashes immediately after I select US-English on the first screen. I'm copying the entire error report below. My system is configured as follows: Gigabyte P35-DS3R motherboard with 4G RAM. (FYI, I'm using the 32-bit LiveCD just because I may need a 32-bit OS for some purposes. I know this means I may not be able to use all of my RAM.) There are 3 500G hard drives connected to the computer. /dev/sda and /dev/sdb are RAID-1 mirrors via the on-motherboard ICH9R RAID chip. The logical partitions show up as /dev/dm-1, /dev/dm-2, /dev/dm-3, /dev/dm-4, and /dev/dm-5. When I type `fdisk -l`, I can see sda, sdb, and dm-* all separately. (I can provide the full output of `fdisk` if anybody wants to see it.)
/dev/sdc is a standalone drive without RAID.
I want to install Fedora on /dev/dm-2 with swap on /dev/dm-5. Currently, /dev/dm-1 and /dev/sdc2 each contain a separate installation of WinXP. I suspect the problem is with detecting RAID, thus I have deleted most of the error report that doesn't seem to concern storage detection.

I switched from ubuntu to fedora 13 today only and the problem that I am facing is that I can't update either using software updates or using yum. yum says no repository found and when I saw software sources in Add/Remove Software, I found no repository was enabled. I tried to enable it but it says cannot contact fedora, so this won't be enabled.I am able to surf internet by the way. I am having a LAN connection with a proxy server but i checked those things in it and of course I was able to do updates in ubuntu

If I enable the option of keep-alives on a TCP socket, is there any way that my application can get the response to the keep-alive back from the kernel. Basically, I have a 'select' blocking on a socket on which I have enabled keep-alives. I need to know if select would unblock if a response to a keep-alive sent by the kernel is received on the socket.
I wanna see the wifi signal strength.But when i run the command iwconfig , it tells me 'no wireless extensions'.By googling I found that I need to enable config option CONFIG_NET_RADIO.I see that this has to be done in boot which has config files.So I typed the command grep CONFIG_NET_RADIO /boot/<config-2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686> (my fedora version is 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686).But I got the error as "bash: syntax error near unexpected token `newline' ".I dont know the reason.I also want to know if I have to install driver(ndiswrapper)for viewing wireless signal strength. I have a Belkin 54g ADSL Router/Modem connected to ADSL
I connect my laptop (Ubuntu 8.04) wirelessly to this router
I have a Netgear DGN2000 Router/Modem with NO connection to ADSL
I connect my desktop to the Netgear using a wired connection
I want to bridge the two routers and use the internet on the desktop
The Belkin 54g Router setup has options for Wireless Bridge.. I have selected "Enable Wireless Bridging"; as far as I can tell there is no corresponding option in the Netgear DGN2000's settings to act as a wireless bridge. I have changed the ESSID, Security, and Channel all to the same settings and when I turn on the Netgear router the signal strength of the network dramatically increases. I am unsure whether this is the "Bridge" connected... or if the Netgear's signal is just drowning out the Belkin's signal. In any case I cannot use the internet when connected to the network with the Netgear turned on. What do I do?

I was just playing with Fedora 13 and found that when I try to watch any AVI file it searches all required Codecs from RPM Fusion repository and install it. I was just wondering if this can be done on the openSUSE because what I know about Fedora is, it doesn't customize the products and uses as it is. If someone know how to enable such Autodetecting in Totem.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a cd drive and a dvd burner in my computer that have worked fine for years. I run an up to date wheezy box. In the last month or so, the drives both started having a problem where they would immediately close after I open them by using the button on the drives. I am not sure which update caused the problem. If I do manage to shove a disc in before it closes, Nautilus doesn't mount the disk. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can get the drives to work again?

I am using Ubuntu Lucid Lynx (10.04)I have a wireless card in my PC that I only use very occasionally so I uncheck the Enable Wireless option on the network tool icon to stop the system attempting to connect to my wireless network. That works fine for that session, but the system does not seem to remember this setting and attempts to connect the wireless each time I log in! Is this a feature or a bug? and does anyone know a way of defaulting the wireless option to off

I have to hold on to the key that I want typed for about 1 whole second for it to be entered... the mouse click is okay, it's just the keyboard.Here's a rough outline of what happened, and the significants events that took place on the desktop that this is happening on.The computer originally had Debian Lenny on it. At some point of time, I just started getting everything from backports... and after some things and hops later, the computer does in fact report having Debian 6.0.Anyway - I again did an upgrade... and now the problem occurs.

Here is a gif of the application in action: [URL] ..... As you can tell, there is an approximately two second delay before the icon changes. I was wondering if there was a way of making the icon change immediately.

I have problem with several usb devices plugged to laptop HP Envy 17 n120nd, new laptop with Skylake. Because of the Skylake I have Debian Testing installed (instead of Windows, hence no dual boot). The problem is as follows. When I plug an usb device such as memory stick, usb storage and wired mouse, none of them are detected, despite the fact that lights of these devices are on (except the mouse as I will explain later).
But when I reboot the laptop, while the usb devices stay plugged in the laptop, then they usually are detected (hence not always) and works without problem. Except the mouse: after completing the reboot the light of the mouse went off, indicating that there is no power. Replugging the mouse results in power for the mouse and it works like a charm too.
What can be the cause? And, maybe more important. I contacted HP, but they give no support for Linux.
I have a strange problem in my new debian 8.3 LXDE install. Every time I boot my laptop it goes in to sleep mode automatically after a min. It is a default install and I have not configured any power management options. How do I find out the reason for the automatic sleep and how can I rectify it?

The following result popped up: p,li{white-space:pre-wrap;}E: Error http://ppa.launchpad.net natty/main/Sources Sources 404 Not Found First I thought, it would be just some kind of server problem, but it didn't stop. The next thing was to research the thread and I even found something. However, the solution suggested didn't work at all. (Things, which might have caused this: I installed the default software center |I'm using Kubuntu, but in this case that fact doesn't matter| and used it. To sum up:
- not able to update the system referring to the launchpad main sources for 11.04
- following error: E: Error http://ppa.launchpad.net natty/main/Sources Sources 404 Not Found It would be great if this was a common issue and I've been simply too stupid to find a proper solution. So you could just post the link.
I am running Jolicloud on my netbook (which I believe is an Ubuntu derivative) and I am tried to enter the getdeb.net sources in so I can install apps from the website through APT but
1) When I entered the sources into sources.list and then the key into Terminal and then went to the site and tried to install an app it didn't work.
2) I deleted the line of code in the sources.list file and when I opened terminal and entered "sudo apt-get update" it showed the list of sources, but on the list were Getdeb.net sources.
My question is how do I delete sources that aren't in /etc/apt/sources.list ?
I am installing a hp officejet pro 8500 all in one printer to knoppix 6.0.1. install hangs saying i need to disable cd sources in etc/apt/source.list. How do i do this?
