OpenSUSE Install :: 11.3 - Delay / Hanging Of 3 Minutes During Boot Process
Aug 4, 2010Every time I boot up OpenSUSE 11.3 it hangs at the same "position" for approximately 3 minutes and then continues to boot. Unfortunately I see no corresponding error log e.g. in dmesg output. Hence, I don't know what is the reason for that. Here is my dmesg output. The delay occurs at 20 seconds after beginning of boot process (line 1085). I also analyzed the boot process with bootchart.
My computer: Notebook Lenovo ThinkPad R400.
Ubuntu :: Delay MythTV Backend During Boot Process?
Apr 24, 2010When I reboot my computer I cannot see my Tuner card until I manually restart the MythTV backend.
the problem is that the backend is being started before the drivers to the tuner card (HVR-2250). is there a way to change this.
I figure I should ask here as more people know there way around start up commands. I figure the easiest thing to do is to edit this file:

I would think adding a sleep or wait command would do the trick?
OpenSUSE Install :: Long Delay During Boot - 11.2
Feb 21, 2010I'm trying to track down a longggg delay during OpenSUSE 11.2 boot. It's 1 to 2 minutes long.
1. I upgraded the kernel to "vmlinux-2.6.31.12-0.1-desktop.gz" a while back, and I'm "kind of" thinking this is when it began. It seems in previous versions (I came from 10.3) that the grub menu always contained the previous version. That doesn't seem to be true in 11.2. Is there any way to tell OpenSUSE YaST/zypper to keep the previous version and leave the entry in grub?
2. What does this message mean: "BIOS EDD facility v0.16 2004-Jun-25, 2 devices found"?
I haven't pinpointed the error, and there is nothing really obvious in /var/log/messages. The drives are there, and the network is up. I'm sort of leaning towards the new kernel. What processes wait 60 seconds? If I watch the console closely for the message before the delay, it can vary.

Jul 18, 2011I have installed "open-SUSE 11.4" on a "500GB Free Agent External Hard Drive". I didn't have any problem in booting since last week that I booted it from my laptop. Also I did it before several times from then when I try to boot it e.g. from an "Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz" PC the time between loading INITRD and starting boot sequence messages lasts nearly 30 minutes!(i didn't actually measure it but it take a long time in the same order). after starting boot sequence which is showed on monitor everything looks normal. e.g copy of files would be done by speeds between 2MB/s to 30 MB/s depending on the targets.I used to use the external hard derive to boot from different laptops and PC's from start but I didn't have such a problem anytime.

Jan 6, 2010I have a Dell XPS M1330 with Opensuse 11.2 and Windows Vista Business in a dual boot hard disk.
I was using Fedora 11 before Opensuse, and it was fast and performed well. However I installed Opensuse because I like KDE 4.3 and this is the best KDE distro.
After the last kernel update my system lost initrd, I restored creating an initrd with chroot, mount and mkinitrd from a rescue disk. After first boot, I reinstalled the kernel update, so the initrd was replaced by the new one created in the update.
However, my system is very slow, I don't know where to look for bad configuration or anything else. The boot process took 220 seconds.

OpenSUSE Install :: Long Delay After Desktop Appears
Mar 28, 2011After I boot up into 11.4, the desktop/icons appear but then there is a delay of about 20 - 30 seconds before the bottom-right task bar items appear. During that time, I can't start any applications. This happens on both desktop PC's, very frustrating and not present with 11.3.

May 11, 2011After GRUB 2 comes up (I'm running Ubuntu 10.10) and I choose the OS to boot, there is about a 5 second delay where nothing appears to happen after I make the selection -- no disk activity. It happens consistently every time I boot. Again, this is after I choose the OS to boot, so it shouldn't have anything to do with the standard delay to allow me to choose the appropriate OS.Is there a good way to troubleshoot this and determine what is causing the delay?

May 11, 2011Using OpenSUSE 11.4 on a backup server. At boot, it needs to connect to the main server's NFS share. Watching the text scroll up the screen, it's obvious that the system waits for anything up to several minutes showing 'mounting NFS...'. Once it (eventually) passes that point, the rest of the boot procedure is as fast as expected.
If NFS is disabled at boot, normal boot times are restored. If the NFS client is restarted via 'rcnfs restart' once the system is up and running, it's instant. If NFS is disabled at boot and started manually afterwards, it start instantly. Once running, NFS behaves normally. The backup server has two ethernet ports, connected via a switch to the main server, which also has two ethernet ports. All ports are configured via DHCP from a router, with all addresses reserved on the router so that all important devices are kept at the same locations.

May 29, 2010Earlier today, I tried to install FreeBSD. If anyone here has done this, I think I went wrong at the part where it asked if I wanted to edit the Master Boot Record. In any case, now when I turn the computer on, it boots into FreeBSD instead of into GRUB. Now I have no access to Ubuntu or Windows, and I have no internet on FreeBSD. How can I fix the MBR so that it boots into GRUB instead of FreeBSD? I want my Ubuntu back...

Mar 24, 2010I'm not sure what caused it, but it happened right after running 'yum update'. It may be because it installed a new kernel, and there are now two kernels listed in my grub.conf and at boot; 2.6.31 and 2.6.32. System boots through a list of things it's starting up and stalls out at ATL or ADL or ADM maybe. It hangs there for a minute or so then flickers. This happens every time at boot. It's a bit difficult to post more information since I can't get past that part of the boot process, and I can't seem to be able to skip it either. It may be worth mentioning that this is a mini-itx motherboard. Intel Atom 330 1.6, 2GB DDR2, onboard GeForce 9400m. It's a zotac ionitx-a-u. I've installed a fresh copy of Fedora 12 lxde.

Nov 26, 2010In Ubuntu 8.04, when I wanted to reduce the boot menu delay I had to do the following:
enter in terminal: gksu gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
I then looked for the line that begins with timeout and changed the value (shortened the delay)
Now with ubuntu 10.10, when I tried this I do get into the Gedit text editor as with 8.04 but it is completely blank, no entries at all? So nothing to change! So how do I change the boot menu delay in ubuntu 10.10?

Feb 3, 2011This morning I had the courage to run an apt-get autoremove which took some 275 packages off my hard drive, and now I am experiencing a delay of about 40 seconds at boot, after grub, before the plymouth splash appears. The cursor blinks on a black screen while the hard drive churns away. Finally two error messages appear too quickly to be read, and then the bootsplash kicks in. I can find the instant in the dmesg where the delay happens, but can't locate the cause. Here's what my dmesg looks like:

The laptop is an Acer Timeline X 3820TG, with the dual GPU "switchable graphics." These dual graphics cards have given me enough trouble in the past that I wouldn't be surprised if they were the problem. But the hard drive action sounds like a 'fsck,' and seems to be contemporaneous with the dmesg notice that the root partition is mounted.
Incidentally, my boot wasn't all that fast before; I would not be surprised if this delay was preexisting, but used to happen after the plymouth boot screen was already on screen. Still, if I can get rid of this one ugly delay, I can have a fast (c. 10 secs) boot time.

Copied file to /etc/init.d/rc5.d with these permissions:

Edit: I can run shell file by invoking it with terminal. So there is no problem with the file

Feb 14, 2011I have OpenSuse 11.3 KDE installed in dual boot with Win 7. Have used Ubuntu in the past and remember that whenever I started my computer with Ubuntu, i had a black colored screen which showed various kernel options. So in short I was sure that the Ubuntu installation had updated itself. On the contrary, whenever I start Suse 11.3 KDE, it shows me just one option of Suse 2.6.34.7-0.7
I have doubts, is Suse up-to-date, and also there is mention of KDE 4.6 on kde.org website.
But my operating system information is as follows:
KDE: 4.4.4 (KDE 4.4.4) "release 3"
OS: Linux 2.6.34.7 -0.7 -default i686
System: openSUSE 11.3 (i586)
I have also seen that on 10th Mar 2011, Suse 11.4 will be realeased. Will update/ upgrade of this installation work in this direction?
Fedora :: Cronjob / Delay The Mount Until After The Boot Sequence Finishes?
Mar 14, 2010I need to do a NFS mount after my PC boot up. So I put an entry in root's cron to do it:
@reboot /bin/mount sun:/mynfs /mnt/sun/mynfs
The mount occasionally fails. But when I manually mount after booting, it always succeed. So I suspect maybe the cron sometimes got executed before the network was started?
Is there a way to delay the mount until after the boot sequence finishes? You know, other than put the command in a script and add a sleep in front of it?

The only partitions that are on the drive are the EFI, ubuntu and swap. Refit lives on the EFI dos partition.I am experiencing a very long delay on power-on before the system will load refit (probably 20-30 seconds) Once it loads everything is normal.

Jan 12, 2010I was working normally and the GUI just failed, all I could still see were any open windows. I rebooted the machine from tty1 and now I can't login anymore under my normal user accounts.
I enter my credentials, it appears to login, and immediately goes back to the login screen. Note that under tty1 I can still login with my user account and do everything.
I can still login with root in the gui.
/var/log/messages says this

Now I turn on RAID in STRIPE mode for better productivity, Windows 7 installation was successful, It creates MBR partition (100 M and C: HDD. During SUSE installation(I've chose all parameters- swap and partition) installation process stop at 1% on "operating with HDD" and my VAIO dont answer on any key pressed (alt ctr del, ctr c, esc) and I'll should to turn it power off. During surfing web, I'll find some solutions to solve it by creating root partition but It hasn't any results.

Jan 20, 2011I have a dual boot system on a 500GB HDD. Here is a printscreen of the partition table for the disk. It's a fairly standard set-up but the root partition is almost full (I know it's fairly unheard of but I have a lot of software provided by uni that takes up a lot of space). I would like to shrink my /home partition and increase the root one. I've downloaded gparted and got it onto a live CD. The only thing I really want to know before I go ahead is how will the editing of the partitions affect booting.
From what I can tell from reading is that the MBR has only got listed the place on the HDD where the bootable partitions start. These starting placed will not be affected by the alteration, so will the system quite happily boot in the same manner? One booted I'm assuming as the /home partition will have moved I'll need to alter fstab to mount /home again. Will having /home missing caused any adverse affects on the first boot into linux?

Jul 18, 2011I have a Macbook 5,2, on which I'm triple booting OS X - Linux - Windows, using bootcamp and rEFIt.I had a variation of Ubuntu 10.04 called Uber Student as the linux installation.I installed Ubuntu 11.04 AMD64 instead, by choosing the EFI boot option.Now this gave me some problems. When I shot down, the Macbook gives me a troubling long beep sound.When I start up, I'm still able to boot up into rEFIt and Grub2, but there is a big delay with the screen being black for about 30 seconds and the little white light in the left corner of the Macbook is blinking feverishly. I read something about a guy which had a similar problem and the process seemed to mess up the firmware on his Macbook, so he had to have his MB changed.
What's up with the scary beep sound and the long boot up delay?Secondly, when I want to do an update of the Ubuntu system, the update manager asks me to do a partial upgrade, which includes removing the grub-EFI, resulting in a system that won't boot...

At the unmounting file systems though I have to wait for a 20-30mins duration to finished. I have two or three network shares but even a timeout would not take more than 1 min to appear.
