OpenSUSE Hardware :: Delay From Libata When Connecting ESATA?
Aug 12, 2010
I get some errors in dmesg and a delay as libata probes and tries to negotiate with my eSATA enclosure.
Some backstory to this adventure:My mainboard is an MSI K9AGM2-L with the AMD SB600 chipset providing the AHCI SATA controller for four ports, two of which (#s 3 and 4) are available.
A Rosewill RCR-AK-IM5002 internal card reader (manufacturer page missing) provides a SATA-to-eSATA adaptor port.
I wish to use a SAMSUNG Spinpoint M7E HM641JI 640GB 2.5" SATA hard disk drive externally. First, I had a Vantec NST-260SU-BK 2.5" SATA to USB 2.0 and eSATA enclosure. As explained in this forum post, all seemed well at first. But even though I got absolutely no visible errors, I could see (through hash checking and byte-by-byte comparisons) that writing (copying) to the external disk was not happening correctly. After exchanging the enclosure several times, I finally noticed that the retailer had a different (generic) brand, so I got one of those instead. (The particular unit I got was missing its screws; had a protrusion in its casing that obstructed the circuit board's seating; and caused even my mainboard's firmware to lock up when it was probed, twice, on each boot. A replacement with the same model remedied those three issues.)
Now we come to the present. The Comkia MM-G3BK-SUE MobiMe G3 2.5" SATA to USB 2.0 and eSATA enclosure (manufacturer page missing) doesn't seem to exhibit the writing issue (yet) -- hurray! However, it causes libata to struggle for fifteen seconds or so trying to connect when it is plugged in. (It also causes openSUSE to stall while booting for that reason.) Here is the output from dmesg:
Code:
[ 127.732765] ata4: exception Emask 0x10 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x40d0000 action 0xe frozen
[ 127.732770] ata4: irq_stat 0x00000040, connection status changed

Sendmail on the RHEL server is set up to forward email to company internal mail server (via SMART_HOST). This has worked fine for years.
From the server, doing a sendmail dave@company.com, the message is sent immediately. No problems - and no change here.
From the server, doing a sendmail roberto@compania.com (compania is the part of the company in Mexico) causes a 2m40s delay before sendmail does anything.
No packets are sent until after 2m40s wait. Message is always sent after the delay. It is not clear what the server is waiting for.
For *each* user in the @compania domain specified in sendmail command, an additional 2:40 is imposed before email is sent. Email is always sent after the n*2:40 sec delay.
Sending email to some_name@AnUnusedDomainNameThatDoesntExist.com is processed immediately - with a bounce email received in a couple of seconds.
Q: How do I determine where this 2m 40s delay is introduced?

I have a working installation of OpenSuse 11.2 on a 300GB eSATA drive, /dev/sdb. Note: /dev/sdb is actually an IDE drive with an eSata adapter since my mother board only has one IDE ribbon input that I use for /dev/sda and the DVDRW drive.I have a 200GB IDE drive, /dev/sda that I use as a data drive. Both drives are accessible to 11.2 and in use.I installed OpenSuse 11.3 on /dev/sda in partition sda1. The same results occur with 32 bit and 64 bit distribution. I have grub for 11.3 on the the sda1 partition and chainload to it from 11.2 grub.
The installed 11.3 system will not recognize the second drive /dev/sdb or any of its partitions. It does not show up on /var/log/messages -- it does not appear to exist.I believe this problem is with 11.3 because 11.2 recognizes both disks. Perhaps it is support of eSATA drives or the IDE to eSATA adapter that has regressed?

I believe this problem is with 11.3 because 11.2 recognizes both disks. Perhaps support of eSATA drives.

I want to "build" a new backup solution for my home LAN. I have 3 openSUSE machines at various versions and 1 File Server with openSUSE 11.4.My plan is to plug a eSATA or USB3 docking station on the file server and then take backups from the clients either via rsync or Amanda.Since the backup will not be a daily activity, I would like to have the option to run the backup during night, and automatically, BUT, without any action from my part. So, I would like to attach a large external HDD on the machine and then:Power on the docking station/HDD.Perform the backup from the Amanda Server or rsync scripts.Power off the docking station/HDD.Do you know any docking station that has a "linux" power management? If not, how do I power up/power down from console an eSATA or USB HDD?

After GRUB 2 comes up (I'm running Ubuntu 10.10) and I choose the OS to boot, there is about a 5 second delay where nothing appears to happen after I make the selection -- no disk activity. It happens consistently every time I boot. Again, this is after I choose the OS to boot, so it shouldn't have anything to do with the standard delay to allow me to choose the appropriate OS.Is there a good way to troubleshoot this and determine what is causing the delay?

In another thread I shared how my system occasionally freezes. I found a solution in which I forced the drive connected to sata port 1 (ata1) to run at 1.5 Gbps and let the second drive connected to sata port 2 run at 3.0 Gbps. I have multiple systems on this machine. When I boot into Slackware 12.2 with the 2.6.27.58 kernel.
I see this in dmesg:
ata1: FORCE: PHY spd limit set to 1.5Gbps
ata1: SATA max UDMA/133 cmd 0x9f0 ctl 0xbf0 bmdma 0xe000 irq 23
ata1: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300)
Looks okay. When I boot into Slackware 13.1 I see this in dmesg:
ata1: FORCE: PHY spd limit set to 1.5Gbps
ata1: SATA max UDMA/133 cmd 0x9f0 ctl 0xbf0 bmdma 0xe000 irq 23
ata1: SATA link up 3.0 Gbps (SStatus 123 SControl 300)
Further, when I boot into 13.1 the freezing problems return. Therefore I suspect the drive is running at 3.0 Gbps.
1. Why isn't libata.force working?
2. How can I know what speed the drive is running?

I'm using a RHEL5/Centos5 variant. After struggling with various 2 TB hard drive failures, I started using the Hitachi Deskstar and Ultrastar models, and had none of the earlier green feature related or QA problems I had with all others. However, I began seeing SATA controller freezing under heavy loads, like large rsync mirror operations. My controller is an on-board ICH7R running in AHCI mode. The symptoms are that the drive goes off line and begins to log thousands of SMART errors for Spin-Up Retries. Analysis confirms that the drive is 100% OK after, except for the huge SMART log. This happens on two servers, and multiple drives. Changing the drive to 1.5 Gbps interface speed reduces the problem greatly but does not eliminate it.
I'm working with Hitachi engineering on this, and their only theory is that it has to do with "non-zero buffer offset". Apparently this is a feature of NCQ to receive data out of sequence, and Hitachi says that ICH7R is supports NCQ but not this feature. I am told that BIOS is supposed to filter offending commands but BIOS vendors sometimes err. An alternate is to filter them at the driver, which I believe is libata. Does anyone know anything about this issue? Where might be a good place to make a query about this, with regards to libata? I've contacted the motherboard vendor about the BIOS issue, but I'd like to look into libata also.

I use CentOS 5.3 with kernel 2.6.18-128.1.6.el5 for Clonezilla. It would be simpler for me if any of IDE or SATA drives detects as /dev/sdX device. Because when I cloning computers with Clonezilla it is matter which type of drive connected to cloned computer. So I must firstly clone computers with IDE drives, after that with SATA drives. If all drives would detected as /dev/sda I would can clone all computers at once! Is there simple way to enable new libata library without recompiling kernel? Is there already compiled kernels with this feature?

I've performed a new installation of openSUSE 11.3 and I see a lag while starting Opera - close to 10 - 15 seconds.... I didn't have a similar issue with 11.2.... I notice this not only in KDE but in Gnome as well.... This happens only with Opera and not any other application.... These are the details about my Opera installation:
Code:
Version 10.60 Internal
Build 6386
Platform Linux
System x86_64, 2.6.34-12-desktop Can anyone else using Opera confirm if they're facing a similar issue.... If not I can submit the logs at Opera website to see what might be the problem...

I don't like the 'hide' array on the system tray. I never hide my icons there. There is an icon-by-icon setting to hide/show but this is a little laborious. However, there currently doesn't seem to be an easy way to show all icons, but, at the same, hide pop-up notifications after a short delay. How to implement this?

I'm trying to track down a longggg delay during OpenSUSE 11.2 boot. It's 1 to 2 minutes long.
1. I upgraded the kernel to "vmlinux-2.6.31.12-0.1-desktop.gz" a while back, and I'm "kind of" thinking this is when it began. It seems in previous versions (I came from 10.3) that the grub menu always contained the previous version. That doesn't seem to be true in 11.2. Is there any way to tell OpenSUSE YaST/zypper to keep the previous version and leave the entry in grub?
2. What does this message mean: "BIOS EDD facility v0.16 2004-Jun-25, 2 devices found"?
I haven't pinpointed the error, and there is nothing really obvious in /var/log/messages. The drives are there, and the network is up. I'm sort of leaning towards the new kernel. What processes wait 60 seconds? If I watch the console closely for the message before the delay, it can vary.

After I boot up into 11.4, the desktop/icons appear but then there is a delay of about 20 - 30 seconds before the bottom-right task bar items appear. During that time, I can't start any applications. This happens on both desktop PC's, very frustrating and not present with 11.3.

Every time I boot up OpenSUSE 11.3 it hangs at the same "position" for approximately 3 minutes and then continues to boot. Unfortunately I see no corresponding error log e.g. in dmesg output. Hence, I don't know what is the reason for that. Here is my dmesg output. The delay occurs at 20 seconds after beginning of boot process (line 1085). I also analyzed the boot process with bootchart.
My computer: Notebook Lenovo ThinkPad R400.

Using gnome I love the desktop effects, except the 'maximize window' effect. There is an annoying delay when I maximize a window. Is there a way to turn this particular effect off, while leaving all the others on. I looked in control center>desktop effects, but the option is not there. The only way I could turn off the maximize effect was unchecking the "enable desktop effects" checkbox. But this turns all effects off. All other effects run smooth and snappy.

I installed Ubuntu 10.04, and happened to have an Silicom Images PCXpress card plugged in, and it kindly added the sil_sata module. This is fine for this chip set.I think that my earlier installation of Ubuntu 9.04 used Libata, which does support NCQ and also has good legacy support for the Intel Intel ICH7 chipset I have inside my Sony Vaio SZ notebook. Also, libata also support Silicon Image chipsets as far as I can tell from URL...I wish to remove the Silicom Images SATA modules and replace this with libata and then test the performance between the two device drivers.

I just upgraded to Mythbuntu 10.04 (no fresh installation) and I don't know why but my external eSata drive is no more automatically mounted. The XFCE4 config is set to automount hotpluggable and external drives but nothing happens. The eSata drive is neither automounted when switched on before booting nor when switched on while the system is running.I'm not sure, but it's possible that it worked once or twice after the upgrade. Now, it's dead - I have to mount it all manually. With 9.10 it worked like charm. It's our HTPC and my wife is already making jokes again about her nerd-husband always needing to upgrade a perfectly running system.

I have a laptop (hp 8530w) with Vista and disk encryption software installed on the internal hard drive. As I cannot touch the internal hard drive, I would like to install and run Ubuntu from an external hard drive (500 hitachi in an enclosure with USB and eSata port). The idea being that when the drive is connected I run Ubuntu and when it is not the internal HDD is used to boot. I already installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS on this external hard drive. I would like to run it using eSata interface and not USB as the former offers better performance. Unfortunately, as it turns out my BIOS does not allow me to boot directly from eSata disk. I can however boot from USB.
I thought it would be possible to install a boot loader on a USB stick and tell it somehow that Ubuntu is installed on the eSata disk and load the system from there.
I installed GRUB on a USB stick without grub.cfg. This allowed me to load GRUB and get to its shell. Here I discovered another issue. Using GRUB "ls" command the eSata drive is not listed - I can see the USB stick (hd0) and the internal drive (hd1) but no eSata drive. Not being an expert I don't know when in the boot process the eSata disk is detected. If I load Ubuntu completely from USB stick I can see it listed with "fdisk -l" command.
At this point, knowing that I can boot from USB, I'm wondering if there is any way to have a hybrid solution with USB stick storing only what's required to bootstrap Ubuntu, and then have everything else stored on and mounted to my external drive. Is there any other, better way (assuming I cannot do anything on the internal hard drive like repartitioning it, etc ...) to get to what I'm after? I know that I could boot and run Ubuntu using USB interface only but as I stated above I would like to use eSata as it offers better performance. I suppose I'm not the only one trying to do that. Unfortunately my web research did not reveal any solutions.

I have an external eSATA hard drive that has been working fine for months for backing up (I had been rsync'ing to it every night). For my configuration, see [URL]
I can no longer mount the drive with eSATA (doesn't even recognize it). It was mounted on /dev/sdb1. The drive also has a USB ... I tried that and it mounts fine.
So, my data is ok, but I want to resume nightly backups (via eSATA).
Here is some output:

I am now trying the new 10.10 and just can not seem to figure out what happened to my ESATA hot swap ability.when I run lspci I can see the Jmicron Tech JMB362 so I assume that means it should be working. However when I put a drive in my ESATA bay I can not access it. I have to have the drive already in the bay while booting UBUNTU in order to see the drive. This will NOT work for me.
