General :: Slight Delay When Switching Modes In Vim Using Tmux Or Screen
Mar 2, 2011
Switching to and from insert mode in Vim is no longer instantaneous since I use tmux. After pressing Esc in insert mode, it takes a noticeable amount of time to actually get out of insert mode. After pressing Esc and any other key afterwards the switch is immediate, and the command for the key pressed after Esc is executed. Any idea what might cause this? The Vim configuration is not the problem as the delay does not occur when I run Vim outside tmux, so this is probably related to tmux somehow. I use gnome-terminal btw.
Also worth noting, it seems I can not define key bindings in tmux for Esc, my plan was to bind Esc to:bind Escape send-keys.Alas, it seems binding anything to Esc for tmux does not work. The same problem occurs in screen as well.

When I'm in OpenBox, I often have a termianl (lxterminal) open in the background. The terminals responds quickly when logged in as my standard user. If I, however, use su to switch to root, there's about a 2 or 3 second delay on the output for any command I type. This delay goes away if I type another character or tap the spacebar. That input is read as normal -- I've accidentally answered 'y' to prompts before.
My machine is an ASUS Eee PC 1001P (1GB of RAM, Atom 450) with an 40GB Intel SSD.

I upgraded from Slackware 64 13.1 to Slackware 64 13.37 a week or so ago. I am now having a perceptible delay of a few seconds when launching commands from the command line, say for example: screen -R.
My laptop is an X200 with 3GB of RAM.

i've noticed this is happening from time to time, no matter what i'm doing. First the computer beeps then the hard drive speeds up and everything lags.

I just installed tmux on Ubuntu 10.04 and tried to remap the prefix key to C-a by creating the file ~/.tmux.conf with these lines:
set-option -g prefix C-a
unbind-key C-b
When starting tmux, both regularly and with -f ~/.tmux.conf, the prefix is effectively the same default C-b
There are no errors or warnings whatsoever.

I'm a little confuse regarding how one launches tmux. When I launch my terminal (current gnome-terminal), I would like to have tmux up and running. I'm currently doing this by calling "tmux" in my .zshenv (kind of like .bashrc in bash). This does in fact launch tmux, but has some annoying side effects. First, hitting Ctrl-D to exit the shell, only kills tmux, and leaves the tmux-less gnome-terminal still running. An additional Ctrl-D will kill that as well. Second, when ssh into a box with this setup, I get a second, nested instance of tmux. I don't want tmux to launch again when I ssh. Is this the right approach, how should tmux be launched usually?

I just noticed that my .bashrc aliases (eg. alias www='cd ~/data/public_html') don't work from within tmux. They work fine from screen, though.
I don't think I've got anything special in ~/tmux.conf
Code:
# C-a just like in screen
unbind C-b
set -g prefix C-a

After GRUB 2 comes up (I'm running Ubuntu 10.10) and I choose the OS to boot, there is about a 5 second delay where nothing appears to happen after I make the selection -- no disk activity. It happens consistently every time I boot. Again, this is after I choose the OS to boot, so it shouldn't have anything to do with the standard delay to allow me to choose the appropriate OS.Is there a good way to troubleshoot this and determine what is causing the delay?

What should look like X Window System (X.Org) modeline to be put in xorg.conf, for high resolution (incuding recommended 1680x1050 @ 50Hz resolution) for 22" NEC LCD 22WV monitor? X.Org autodetect correctly only 800x600 and lower resolution SVGA modes,unfortunately.1,2
How can I generate proper "Modeline" line for xorg.conf? Is information included in NEC_Datasheet_LCD22WV-english.pdf enough (found on NEC LCD 22WV product info page)? What tools there are available to generate proper modeline for a LCD monitor for Linux? MS Windows (MS Windows XP Home) correctly detects and use 1680x1050 resolution; can I somehow get modeline information from MS Windows?
Footnotes:
1) It might be hardware problem with the monitor itself, as the same LiveCD Linux distribution that couldn't autodetect recommended 1680x1050 mode for NEC LCD 22WV monitor, correctly autodetects recommended 1440x900 mode for slightly smaller NEC LCD 19WV monitor from the same family, by the same producent.
2) Or it might be problem with graphics card (NVIDIA Riva TNT2 M64) not supporting such resolution, or with graphics driver not supporting such resolution.

I'd like to run a number of applications full screen (e.g., VirtualBox, Vendetta Online) but I'd also like to switch to my other Gnome Desktops easily.
Unfortunately, these applications seem to intercept my default and all other hotkeys I have tried for switching desktops ... I know there is a solution for VirtualBox via the host key, but I am looking for something more "generic".
Is there, for example, any way to catch key strokes in Gnome/Compiz before the full screen app receives them?

I just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.4. I am having the following problem:
When I attempt to switch from the user that I am currently logged into, to another user who is also logged in, I get a black screen.
To elaborate, here is the exact sequence of events:
Code:
- Boot ubuntu and login to user A
- Then Click on power menu (top right corner) and select: Switch from A
- I get the login screen
- I select user B and enter my password
[Code].....
I did try to change my session (at the login screen) to gnome-failsafe, xterm, even kde, but still I get the black screen.

all HD video lags. Slightly, but constantly. You can watch movies, but it's annoying.
My PC - intel i3, integrated 4500 vga and 4GB RAM, Ubuntu 11.04 64bit. CPU usage is around 30-70% and disk load is low.
Typical performance tweaks like "skip loops - all" and read buffer size doesn't affect current condition. In Ubuntu 10.10 everything worked flawlessly.
PS. whether 4500 gpu acceleration should work in Ubuntu 11.04 by default? I can't set it up...

I installed Jessie (8.1.0) and encountered a problem which is non-existent in Wheezy (7.8.0).
My shell is zsh and I use tmux both installed from packages, I use this zsh feature that when you type "ls /" and then hit "Tab" twice, it will present you a menu where you can select the directory you want navigating the menu with the arrow keys. It works fine out of tmux (in bare shell) but stopped working inside a tmux session. In bare shell you hit Tab twice and get into the menu, in tmux you hit Tab twice and it displays the table of suggestions but just keeps cycling suggestions (cycling directory names) and not sending me to the menu.
Here's some screenshots:
1) Working (no tmux): I hit tab twice and got in the menu.
2) Not working (in tmux): I hit tab twice and it just cycled directory names after "/"
t isn't in my config file, I tried without my .tmux.conf (with tmux set to default settings) and it still had no effect.

Using Ubuntu 10.04.My fonts looked different today. Only slightly different. So I went into the appearance preferences to try to figure it out.In, Systems->Preferences->Appearance, click the "Fonts" tab and for "Rendering" select "Subpixel smoothing (LCDs)".Then click "Details". For hinting I choose "Full". Then I close the "Font Rendering Details" dialog box. And close the "Appearance Preferences" dialog box.
My problem is that my system won't keep my "Subpixel smoothing (LCDs)" font Hinting setting on "Full". It keeps changing it back to "Slight". When I go back into the settings one thing I notice that you can see in the picture is that for "Rendering" they all have the minus sign. Then when I re-click on "Subpixel smoothing (LCDs)" it shows up as "slight".

I'm using currently ubuntu 10.10. Having a nvidia gt220 with the proprietary drivers. I used compiz for a while. It works quite well, with vsync on and so on. But one thing bothers me all the time: In any opengl program (like a game or the unigen benchmarks) or on video playback (no matter if its the default video player, xbmc or what ever) I see some kind of stutter. About every second or so it jumps one frame forward and then two back. Till the next second it plays fluid.
To be able to observe this easily you need a video (or a opengl scene) where the whole screen scrolls in a medium speed but smooth. Than you can observ how it "jumps" every second. If the scrolling is too slow you wont observe it. Now, if I turn composite off this disapears. All play fluid. Ofcourse I get tearing as long as I do not also disable the composite extension in the xorg.conf, but this is another story. Is there a possibility to fix this stuttering with compiz active? Cause I use this pc to watch movies quite often so this would render compiz unusable.

So, "unable to update .IECauthority hit me yesterday in a big way. After trying all sorts of suggested remedies in the [solved] and unsolved threads, it became quite evident that the chown and chmod would not work coz ubuntu cant find the "file or directory specified" by .IECauthority. {pardon the n00bspeak}
So i looked around for the "new user" option, i.e. creating a new user so i can log in. That worked. i got to terminal and used sudo adduser guest and now i can at least log in but, predictably i cant access the files of my home directory that was under my "owner" login.
How i can access these files as my new "guest" user alias?
I feel like im so close to beating this friggin .IECauthority error though i am well aware i brought all this misery upon myself coz i just had to have the extra skins for this particular screenlet...
