Having given up on a failed OpenSuse 10.3 and installed 11.2, I am now unable to get better screen resolution then 800 X 400. Previously there was no apparent limit, so I know the Viewsonic display is capable of much more.
In Yast2 the nvidia graphics card is identifed OK, but even in Yast I can find no way of getting back to the higher resolution. In the Desktop-tweaking app all I get offered is even lower resoulutions.
I'm stuck at 800x600, and no matter what i try i seem to hit a dead end. I've got the Intel Mobile 945GM/GMS rev 03, and it seems like lots of people have had to fiddle to get it working. I installed Fedora 12 into a virtual Machine (using virtualbox). Everything was perfect but the screen resolution is only 800*600. I cannot read the text fine and work is impossible.I searched already other posts but i couldn't find anything helpful.How can i set the resolution at least at ca 1280*1024?

Note the last line marked (**) - "from config file", but I only have 1280x1024 there ! And what does that mean

The "Display" interface does not have a tab for "Hardware". The resolution does not go above 800 x 600.
There is no etcX11Xorg11.conf file.
There don't seem to be any display drivers in the software repository like in ubuntu.
monitor is a Optiquest Q19wb. I normally have is set on 1280x1024, but fedora will only go to 800x600. It has detected the monitor correctly. Not sure if being connected to KVM will cause issues. The xorg.conf does not exist. Have installed system-config-display but have not run yet.

Is there some daemon I need to restart to detect the monitor resolutions correctly, or is there a module I can reload?
There seem to several variables to reproducing the behavior. If I restart without the laptop without the monitor plugged in, log in, and then, plug the monitor in with the monitor powered on prior to plugging, all resolutions are detected properly. However, if I plug the monitor in with it powered off, then power it on, I only get the few options shown in above. Once I get the reduced number of options, it seems to stay that way till I restart regardless of how I unplug the monitor.
I have found a work-around by just forcing the modes with xrandr --newmode and xrandr --addmode, but I would much rather have the modes autodetected.
I'm a faithful user of Ubuntu Linux, especially 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope. I have a problem with my screen resolution on my LG Flatron L1718S. It's a 17 inch and its recommended resolution is 1280x1024.I was on this resolution all along until now. Now I'm limited to 800x600 resolution. Here's what happened. Before installing Ubuntu 9.04 on a friend's computer, I put in his Seagate 40 Gig hard drive into his Intel Celeron Box with a 2.93 GHz and 512MB ram. I then plugged my monitor into his system. Upon booting, I discovered that the hard drive had a very strange looking operating system called OS2 Warp...seemed like Black XP to me. On the desktop, the icons were so big and bloated,the mouse was frozen, there was so much eyecandy which demanded so much graphics resources.
His graphics card is an onboard one, framebuffer. I then rebooted the machine, this time running the Ubuntu 9.04 live CD. Resolution still ok, with 1024x768 this time. I installed Ubuntu 9.04 and finished. I shut down the machine, unplugged my monitor and plugged it back into my machine, which is a Intel Celeron with a 2.4GHz processor, 1,5GB RAM, 80GIG X 2 Seagate IDE hard Drives, 2 DVD Drives, an LG Spermulti-DVD rewriter and a BENQ DC W2000 rewriter.My graphics card is NVidia GeForce NV34 FX5200 Series, 256MB RAM Graphics Card. Suddenly everything on the desktop is so large, and the maximum resolution now is 800x600. It becomes 640x480 if i add Nvidia drivers, version 173. If I switch over to Windows XP, Service Pack 2, I have no resolution issues there. Nvidia drivers are loaded there as well. No issues with resolution there. To test the screen again, I plugged my monitor back into my friends computer that I mentioned earlier on. The resolution is stuck on 800x600. After plugging the monitor back to my computer, I tried to edit the X.conf using "sudo nano", adding the desired parameters, like undetected screen resolutions, monitor name, device,etc, but nothing worked.
I always had to resort to the backed up configuration file for XOrg. The latest Ubuntu 10,04 Lucid Lynx picks up my monitor with a maximum resolution of 1024x768.The Mandriva One 2008 Live CD also gave me the same result like Ubuntu 10.04, this time giving me more higher resolution options. Strangely enough, from my Ubuntu 9,04 and older, after several tests, the resolution is still stuck to 800x600. When I press the AUTO RESET button on my monitor, the screen says "Processing image Auto Adjustment-For Optimal display, change resolution to 1280x1024". A factory reset did not help. The resolution was perfect until I plugged my monitor into my friend's computer, the one with the 2,93GHz processor. I took another friend's monitor, a HP Cathode Tube Monitor, a 17 inch as well, and plugged it to my machine to test the resolution. The results were glorious! All resolution options were shown, from the lowest "320x240" to beyond "1280x1024". Plugged it back to mine, the same result showed: 800x600 resolution, the lowest being 320x240. I kindly ask for advice on how I can be able to get all the screen resolution options available on my Ubuntu 9.04, like before, because it shows the maximum of800x600, lowest- 320x240 on "display" in "System--Preferences".

View 1 Replies View RelatedI got my hands recently on openSUSE 10.2 (ppc) to put on my b&w powermac g3. i can boot from the cd and it gives me a text prompt and the choices install, rescue, and something to do with the network (which is whatever), and a not-very-helpful help option. so i type install, and my monitor says "input not supported." i figure, "ok, that's cool, i'll just plug in one of my old crt monitors 'cause it must be trying to use a resolution lower than my fancy-schmancy one supports." plug in the old one, restart, type "install," same thing. i'm not new to linux, but i don't really have any options with this prompt that any manner of googling or thread-hunting can uncover which allows me to specify the resolution at which the yast installer starts (or refresh rate, maybe that's it...) or lets me keep it in text mode through the installation. I tried typing "install textmode=1" which seems to do nothing special (same result as just "install") and just "textmode=1" (which is a fundamentally retarded approach, but what else am i supposed to do?). Once the operating system is installed and i can boot into a terminal, i figure can edit the xorg.config to use the resolution i want, but i can't very well install the system without seeing what i'm doing! It's just confusing 'cause it doesn't seem to like any display i give it.

How that can be accomplished? I cant boot into windows either on the comp I wish to install Ubuntu. I plan on making it a Ubuntu-only computer as the windows is old and password protected by users long gone. I am ready to wipe it clean with a new install of Ubuntu.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am installing 11.2 on an older machine, Athlon 2800+, GeForce 6800, 1 GB RAM. Install goes fine until try to reboot to the OS and just get massive garbage on the screen. Can't see anything just lines crossing the screen, it seems almost like the resolution is way off but don't know how to change that since I can't see anything. I tried two different install disks to make sure not the problem and got the same thing with both. I tried installing both KDE and GNOME on separate occasions and still same problem. I have used the same install disk to put this on an even older machine and that went fine. I do have windows 7 installed on another partition. I'm fairly new to linux but I'm learning.

Suffering from the expected error in detecting my video properly when installed 11.3.Have intel 915G onboard video. Up until 11.1 Opensuse struggled with loading this correctly. in 11.1 & 11.2 all was well. A couple of minor tweaks in sax2 and it worked perfectly. Now hat sax2 has gone I'm not sure how to make these minor tweaks.
My problem is I have been forced to a screen resolution of 1024X768 VGA Following the readme file adding nomodeset at boot fixes the problem but of course forces me back to an old video driver with pretty poor performance. Is there any way I can change the screen resolution and set the correct monitor - any GUI replacement for sax2? Krandrtray will only let me set a max res of 1024x768. I need to set res to 1280x1024
I use normally opensuse 11.1. This days I installed the 11.3. Since I have installed it, the resolution is higher and the fonts are very small. I have some problems with my eyes, so I prefer to use text mode for startup and console. So now I dont know how I can get back to start system in textmode 80x25. suse seem to ignore every command I enter I tried in Yast grub settings to set there Text mode. I tried to add command vga-normal vga-0xF00. Nothing changes it. There is maybe a bug. Whay is the standard resulotion in 11.3 so high ? The installation works in textmode, but after first start it goes up.

Whatever resolution I choose, 1600x1200 is preferred, it is reset to a default of 1024x768 when I log out. I use the "Configure Desktop" option to set the resolution. I can find no other method to do so. The graphics adapter is an ATI hd3200. I have installed the fglrx driver. I cannot fine the "Control Center" for the driver. How do I make the selected resolution permanent?
I just installed 11.4 x64.I have already updated and installed the nvidia 260.19.36 driver via the nvidia repository. The video card is a GEforce 6200.The problem is the highest resolution it will allow is 1024x768.With the same hardware in 11.3 it was running 1920x1200. How can I get that back?

By that I mean that I can connect and access and browse fedora.org (from firefox) and I can install software and updates but no general browsing. I can successfully ping [URL] in a terminal but I am blocked in a browser.
I tried both hardwired and wireless connections to my router, same issues with both and my desktop machine running F14 works just fine (hard line) on the same router.I also tried disabling the firewall and it does not change anything.
I've been running Suse 11.2 KDE on a 64-bit Dell Studio 1535 since last week's release, and have had no trouble using Firefox. At some point today, however, it stopped accessing webpages -- or, when managing to grab a page, it would do so without full html rendering. 95% of the time I get an error splash, while the other 5% I get some sort of truncated page that looks nothing like it should. Konquer and Opera work fine, as does KMail.
I tried deleting the profile.int file (no luck), then uninstalled/re-installed (no luck), then uninstalled and deleted every Mozilla/Firefox file I could find in order for a fresh install -- but this has not worked after several attempts. I still cannot get Internet access. How to completely wipe-out Firefox in order to allow for a totally new installation?

I am trying to change the default screen resolution in Run Level 3 to 640x480. I have tried changing the menu.1st file and the vga=0x301 mode sticks until the system begins to boot and then resets to a higher resolution. This system does not have X, or Sax2 so no go on those options. This is OpenSuse 11.3 x64.
View 6 Replies View RelatedOpenSUSE 11.4 (x86) + KDE 4.6.0 starts up by default in the 1280x1024 screen resolution. Although this is very annoying it can be overcome. But when I change to 1024x768 resolution the Taskbar doesn't adapt to this and the icons bottom right in the system tray can not be seen anymore (they disappear beyond the right side of the monitor so to say).
I have installed the nvidia-gfx-kmp-default graphics driver for my old GeForce card. This problem also occurs with the default, but rubbish, Nouveau driver. In OpenSUSE 11.3 there was no problem at all with the same configuration.

The moment my PC restarts after I have installed the operating system it will boot up with a screen resolution higher than my monitor supports. My screen supports a maximum resolution of 1600 x 1200 @ 75Hz and Linux sets the default resolution way too high at boot, now all I get is a message from my screen asking me very nicely to change the signal timings, but I can't because I can't see anything to change it to a lower value (I don't want it so high anyways because then everything is too **** small). My monitor is a SONY GDM-5410 and the Graphics card is an AMD Radeon HD 4870 1GB. It nly works when I boot the system to FailSafe mode, but then I can't cahnge it permanently.

I can connect to the Internet on my WLAN just fine (using Opera) and can dload torrent files (using the same).
However, I have had trouble accessing some community repositories in the past, cannot synchronise with an NTP server (annoying since my battery is low and time and date are reset most reboots) and cannot use the lyrics function or Wikipedia function in Amarok. Nor can I connect to the net using Firefox (though conqueror works just fine...) I cannot download torrents on KTorrent either.
It seems that there is some sort of 'permission'/connectivity issue.
I have 11.1 installed on an old G3 system. The PowerPC config has worked well, but after an update I get a black screen at GDM. Problem is that after the screen comes up to chose the default version or failsafe, my monitor shows no input. If I delete the VGA 0x031 (i think that's the number) on the Options line in the screen where you chose the version, I get my command line interface.
Can I make the blank VGA options permanent?
I've recently jump from the Ubuntu/Mint ship, and figured I've give a polished KDE distribution a shot. Of course I turned to OpenSuSE, and I love it so far. I've resisted KDE quite a lot since 4.x came out but it's really come along. Much better than the (in my opinion) monstrous disaster that Gnome has become.
Anyways, on to my problem: I've installed the proprietary Nvidia drivers via the one-click-install shown in the wiki, and that worked great. But now my resolution at boot - that is the boot/loading screen, not my desktop - is shown at a very low resolution instead of my native resolution, like it was with OpenSuSE's default open-source Nvidia driver, which I'm guessing is Nouveau. On Ubuntu, this was pretty easy to correct; all you had to do was edit /etc/default/grub and put your resolution there, and tinker with some other options so that instead of Plymouth trying to set its own, it just carries over Grub's specified resolution. But I can't seem to do that with OpenSuSE. For one, I don't see /etc/default/grub, and more than that, I don't think you guys use Plymouth. I could be wrong on that second point, though. So, how can I change the boot screen's resolution to my native resolution? I'm using the latest Stable release (11.4) and latest Nvidia drivers. Other than that, the install is new.
Some month ago I installed openSUSE 11.1. It worked not bad, but I wanted to get the newes release of Firefox. So I did an upgrade to 11.2. Yast2 refused to work with an error message: unknown option -s (or similar). The regular updates didn't work also. Then I decided to do a new installation. Now I'm having a new problem: Display settings (Anzeige-Einstellungen) reports: Monitor unknown (Monitor unbekannt).
Possible resolution settings are: 800 x 600; 640 x 480; 400 x 300; 320 x 240;
Possible refresh rates are: 60 Hz or 56 Hz @ 800 x 600
I need 1024 x 768 @ 76 Hz. In the previous installation it worked well. How I can teach openSUSE to run 1024 x 768 @ 76 Hz?

The VGA controller is also correct shown in Display > 3d Blaster Savage 4
