Red Hat / Fedora :: Screen Resolution Limited To 600x800?

Jan 22, 2011

The "Display" interface does not have a tab for "Hardware". The resolution does not go above 800 x 600.

There is no etcX11Xorg11.conf file.

There don't seem to be any display drivers in the software repository like in ubuntu.

Fedora :: 12 Screen Resolution Limited - Xorg.conf Does Not Exist

Dec 11, 2009

monitor is a Optiquest Q19wb. I normally have is set on 1280x1024, but fedora will only go to 800x600. It has detected the monitor correctly. Not sure if being connected to KVM will cause issues. The xorg.conf does not exist. Have installed system-config-display but have not run yet.

Ubuntu :: Display Limited To 800x600 Screen Resolution On 9.04 On LG Flatron L1718S

Oct 3, 2010

I'm a faithful user of Ubuntu Linux, especially 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope. I have a problem with my screen resolution on my LG Flatron L1718S. It's a 17 inch and its recommended resolution is 1280x1024.I was on this resolution all along until now. Now I'm limited to 800x600 resolution. Here's what happened. Before installing Ubuntu 9.04 on a friend's computer, I put in his Seagate 40 Gig hard drive into his Intel Celeron Box with a 2.93 GHz and 512MB ram. I then plugged my monitor into his system. Upon booting, I discovered that the hard drive had a very strange looking operating system called OS2 Warp...seemed like Black XP to me. On the desktop, the icons were so big and bloated, the mouse was frozen, there was so much eyecandy which demanded so much graphics resources.

His graphics card is an onboard one, framebuffer. I then rebooted the machine, this time running the Ubuntu 9.04 live CD. Resolution still ok, with 1024x768 this time. I installed Ubuntu 9.04 and finished. I shut down the machine, unplugged my monitor and plugged it back into my machine, which is a Intel Celeron with a 2.4GHz processor, 1,5GB RAM, 80GIG X 2 Seagate IDE hard Drives, 2 DVD Drives, an LG Spermulti-DVD rewriter and a BENQ DC W2000 rewriter. My graphics card is NVidia GeForce NV34 FX5200 Series, 256MB RAM Graphics Card. Suddenly everything on the desktop is so large, and the maximum resolution now is 800x600. It becomes 640x480 if i add Nvidia drivers, version 173. If I switch over to Windows XP, Service Pack 2, I have no resolution issues there. Nvidia drivers are loaded there as well. No issues with resolution there. To test the screen again, I plugged my monitor back into my friends computer that I mentioned earlier on. The resolution is stuck on 800x600. After plugging the monitor back to my computer, I tried to edit the X.conf using "sudo nano", adding the desired parameters, like undetected screen resolutions, monitor name, device, etc, but nothing worked.

I always had to resort to the backed up configuration file for XOrg. The latest Ubuntu 10,04 Lucid Lynx picks up my monitor with a maximum resolution of 1024x768.The Mandriva One 2008 Live CD also gave me the same result like Ubuntu 10.04, this time giving me more higher resolution options. Strangely enough, from my Ubuntu 9,04 and older, after several tests, the resolution is still stuck to 800x600. When I press the AUTO RESET button on my monitor, the screen says "Processing image Auto Adjustment-For Optimal display, change resolution to 1280x1024". A factory reset did not help. The resolution was perfect until I plugged my monitor into my friend's computer, the one with the 2,93GHz processor. I took another friend's monitor, a HP Cathode Tube Monitor, a 17 inch as well, and plugged it to my machine to test the resolution. The results were glorious! All resolution options were shown, from the lowest "320x240" to beyond "1280x1024". Plugged it back to mine, the same result showed: 800x600 resolution, the lowest being 320x240. I kindly ask for advice on how I can be able to get all the screen resolution options available on my Ubuntu 9.04, like before, because it shows the maximum of800x600, lowest- 320x240 on "display" in "System--Preferences".

OpenSUSE :: Resolution Limited On New Install?

Jun 25, 2010

Having given up on a failed OpenSuse 10.3 and installed 11.2, I am now unable to get better screen resolution then 800 X 400. Previously there was no apparent limit, so I know the Viewsonic display is capable of much more.

In Yast2 the nvidia graphics card is identifed OK, but even in Yast I can find no way of getting back to the higher resolution. In the Desktop-tweaking app all I get offered is even lower resoulutions.

Slackware :: 13.1 : Resolution Limited To 1024x768?

Jun 4, 2010

Can't make Slack 13.1 to run at more than 1024x768. No problems where with 12.0-13.0. Here are portions of my xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log:

Code:

Section "Monitor"
HorizSync 31 - 81
VertRefresh 56 - 75
Section "Device"

[code]....

Note the last line marked (**) - "from config file", but I only have 1280x1024 there ! And what does that mean

(II) NV(0): Using fuzzy aspect match for initial modes
(II) NV(0): Output VGA2 using initial mode 1024x768
(--) NV(0): Virtual size is 1024x1024 (pitch 1024)

And KDE/Display only offers up to 1024x768 too. Didn't try NVIDIA driver yet but 13.0 had no problems with the same monitor, similar Card and nv driver.

Hardware :: Limited Resolution Choices In Xrandr With External Monitor On Hotplug?

May 5, 2010

I am running Fedora 12 on a T400 Thinkpad. When connector my external monitor prior to powering on the computer or if I restart it, I get a lot of resolution choices from xrandr. See below.

Code:
$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1440 x 900, maximum 8192 x 8192
LVDS1 connected 1440x900+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 303mm x 190mm
1440x900 60.0*+ 50.0
1024x768 60.0

[Code].....

Is there some daemon I need to restart to detect the monitor resolutions correctly, or is there a module I can reload?

There seem to several variables to reproducing the behavior. If I restart without the laptop without the monitor plugged in, log in, and then, plug the monitor in with the monitor powered on prior to plugging, all resolutions are detected properly. However, if I plug the monitor in with it powered off, then power it on, I only get the few options shown in above. Once I get the reduced number of options, it seems to stay that way till I restart regardless of how I unplug the monitor.

I have found a work-around by just forcing the modes with xrandr --newmode and xrandr --addmode, but I would much rather have the modes autodetected.

Fedora :: Screen Resolution Does Not Seem Correct

Mar 10, 2011

I have some experience with Linux (mostly Ubuntu) but absolutely none with Fedora. In fact I have needed to re-install twice just to get to this stage. I now have a fully updated Fedora 14 Gnome desktop. I have (finally) got Nvidia graphics drivers up and running. I can open the Nvidia Settings screen and everything looks ok except that the desktop screen resolution doesn't seem correct. I have a Sony Vaio with default screen resolution of 1920x1200. In Nvidia settings it was set to AUTO, but I've changed that as root user to 1920x1200 with a refresh rate of 60 Hz and rebooted. My desktop looks quite good, but it's not 1920x1200 - maybe 1600x1200? Perhaps. How do I confirm the current resolution?

I have run
Code:
glx info | grep direct
and the output is
Code: direct rendering: Yes
GL_EXT_Cg_shader, GL_EXT_depth_bounds_test, GL_EXT_direct_state_access,
Which I presume is ok?

When I do presentation, I have to mirror the two monitors and both set to 1024*768, which is not perfect.

I remember that when I use RHEL 5 desktop edition, The system can automatically detect the external monitor and set it by itself ----- The laptop uses 1400*1050 and the external monitors such as projector uses 1024*768. But I haven't found such feature on FC11.

Fedora :: Resets The Screen Resolution At Reboot?

Nov 5, 2010

I just install a GT240 video card on my desktop. The monitor that I've been using is a 50PH9UK plasma TV. The TV is connected to the desktop through VGA output. It appears that Fedora sets the screen size at 1360x860 by default. However, I prefer to set the screen size at 1020x768. The problem is that everytime I reboot the desktop, Fedora automatically resizes the screen to the default resolution (1360x860). I tried to look for the xcon.fig file in /etc/X11/ but it's not there. It appears that the xcon.fig is missing. Do you know how I can correct the automatic screen reset issue? By the way, I'm using the Fedora 14 KDE version.

Fedora :: How To Set Default Screen Resolution In FC13

Oct 13, 2010

Have just upgraded from FC12 - nothing seemed to work as it should - to FC13 which is working quite a lot better - automatically updating everything etc. - and I can now install what I want. The preupgrade installation bizzo seemed to work quite well. But I can't seem to be able to set a "default" screen resolution - being slightly geriatric I like 832x624 - but rather have to do it manually every time I start the OS. Have dug into it quite a lot but can't seem to find a way of having it boot up each time at the res I want it to.

And also, in the past, when clicking onto URLs in emails in Thunderbird they automatically opened themselves in Firefox - but not now. Even clicking "Open in Browser" doesn't seem to do it. Have to copy and paste etc. Surprisingly the other way seems to work OK - "Contact:" tags in Firefox open a Tbird email pane. Do I have to get into about.config or write a user.js file or that sort of thing?
